YOUR HELP IS REQUIRED The Vitality Westminster Mile and 10k are fast approaching on Saturday 29 May and Sunday 30 May. As our commitment to London Marathon Shaftesbury supply 20 volunteers for each event. We have enough people for the 10k on the Monday, but are a few short for the Westminster Mile which is on Sunday 29 May.

The meeting time is 8am in the Mall, and you will be supplied with Kit & Lunch. It’s a very enjoyable & rewarding morning and we look forward in seeing you.

Many thanks RAY and CLARE – Please contact them us on 01462 811165 or 07947 680507

BRITISH ATHLETIC LEAGUE PREMIERSHIP The first fixture of four took place on Saturday 7 May at Eton.

The BAL season began in good conditions at Eton with the team welcoming several new members to the squad. STEVE TURNOCK (Javelin – fresh from his win at the BUCS where he threw 68.52m), ANDREW LAWLER (3k S/C), JAMAL-MARCUS RHODEN-STEVENS (400m – with a PB of 48.0), BRADLEY GOATER (3k), MATTHEW PAGAN (400m) and JAMES MCLACHLAN (LJ)

The overall 4th place was disappointing however on the “every point counts” principle, the 8 points scored by last minute substitute CLYDE GORDON kept us ahead of both SHEFFIELD and LIVERPOOL. The team started well with a double first in both the Long Jump with DANIEL BRAMBLE and JAMES MCLACHLAN and in the Discus from ZANE DUQUEMIN and ANGUS MCINROY. In the 800m, BEN ROCHFORD returned to form after his disappointing performance at the BUCS the previous weekend with his 3rd fastest time ever, whilst the “B” string saw the ever-young ANTHONY WHITEMAN run an excellent tactical race to secure victory. He then returned just over an hour later in the “A” string 1500m to finish less than a second down on the winner. RICHARD HORTON, fresh from a mini Ironman event, secured a 3rd place in the 3000m with a new PB.

Even though a number of our sprinters were competing elsewhere, our depth of talent was on show with not only a PB 100m from DANIEL BRAMBLE, but a top class double first in the 200m with first time wins from ANTONIO INFANTINO and GERALD MATTHEW in high quality fields. ANTONIO and GERALD were then joined by RICHARD MORRISSEY and ANDREW AMOAH to secure a clear victory in the 4 x 100m relay in 41.60. The 4 x 400m team were involved in a high class race finishing a solid 4th place, JAMAL-MARCUS RHODEN-STEVENS (49.8), SAM HAZEL (48.6), ANTONIO INFANTINO (48.1) and RICHARD MORRISSEY (49.2) in 3.15.66.

DAVID SMITH opened his outdoor season with an excellent 2.20m performance which equalled the winning height but was placed 3rd on countback. Our triple jumpers, NATHAN FOX (the current UK top ranked) and DANIEL LEWIS had a nightmare with injuries on the day which restricted their performances to just one valid jump each.

The next round is on Saturday 4 June at Sportcity in Manchester where we hope to improve with the return of many of our athletes from warm weather training and other commitments and secure a top 2 finish.

ADDITIONAL MARSHALS REQUIRED My name is Rob Wilson, I’m from Highgate Harriers and I head up our army of track-side volunteer marshals for the upcoming Night of the 10k PBs on Saturday May 21.

I’m sure you know all about the night  itself (this year featuring the Rio Olympic trials for Team GB!), and one thing we think makes it so special is just how close spectators can get to the athletes – support in lane 3 really is unique and a huge help to our runners! What this does however mean is we have to be extra vigilant and employ a large number of trackside marshals to stand on the track. We’re still a few marshals short of our full necessary quota and I was hoping some SBH members would be able to join our volunteer ranks? I’d emphasise that marshalling will not hinder ability to watch races one bit.

Last year’s video highlights: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zOrngMe0wRU

The UK/Europe’s only night of high quality 10,000m track races, from good regional athletes to Olympic/International calibre – 6 races in total, starting at 5pm – Free to attend for everyone

Lastly, here’s a little snapshot of your role

Track side marshals, the best seat in town where you get to volunteer but also spectate and cheer on athletes

Manage crowds from lane 3 itself, ensuring people, children, dogs and stray footballs DO NOT get into the way of the athletes

Encourage all spectators to spread out around the track safely and cheer on the athletes with vigour

Advise spectators where facilities such as bar/toilets are (v easy)

Attendance at the Marshal’s Meeting for instructions at 4:15pm on Saturday 21 May at Parliament Hill Athletics Track, NW5

LONDON 2017 IAAF WORLD AND PARATHLETICS CHAMPIONSHIPS London 2017 has announced that there are to be athlete-themed ‘world record’ ticket prices available for next year’s event to reflect world records set by athletes at previous IAAF World Championships.

Tickets for one session at one price point will be available for £12.91 (Colin Jackson’s 110m hurdles record), £18.29 (Jonathan Edwards’ triple jump record) and £52.74 (Sally Gunnell’s 400m hurdles record). All children’s tickets will be priced at £9.58 (Usain Bolt’s 100m record).

A total of 1.5 million tickets will go on sale on August 1 for the ‘Summer of World Athletics’ – 800,000 for the World ParaAthletics Championships, taking place from July 14-23, 2017, and 700,000 for the IAAF World Championships from August 4-13, 2017. Public sales will be held via ballot, with applications opening at 10.00am on August 1 and closing at 20.17pm on August 22, 2016. Prior to this there will be a priority sale window for pre-registered members of the athletics family in May and June 2016.

“I always say that the children are the future and I commend the organisers of London 2017 on this initiative to give young people the chance to buy affordable tickets,” said 11-time world gold medallist Bolt. “I hope it will inspire many of them to get into athletics and look forward to seeing many young people filling seats next summer.”

“I always say that the children are the future and I commend the organisers of London 2017 on this initiative to give young people the chance to buy affordable tickets” – Usain Bolt

The IAAF World Championships and World ParaAthletics Championships, to be held in the same city in the same year for the first time ever, will bring together world-class athletes from over 200 countries who will compete in 30 sessions across 20 jam-packed and action-fuelled days. Full details of the London 2017 competition schedules can be found here.

“Next summer’s World ParaAthletics Championships are going to be incredible,” said T37 400m world champion and world record-holder Georgie Hermitage. “I was one of many that started competing again as a result of the London 2012 Paralympic Games, so having the opportunity to continue my journey from where it started will be incredible.

“I was one of 80,000 in the crowd at the Olympic Stadium cheering on the British team, and it will be a feeling like no other to have that support once again but this time as an athlete. It’s great to see tickets as such competitive prices and I would encourage everyone to come and see the biggest stars in the sport.

For the IAAF World Championships there is a wide range of accessible prices for tickets, starting at just £20 for adults with child prices under £10 for every session. Over one third of tickets (250,000) cost £35 or less, with 50% of tickets costing £50 or less.

Tickets for the World ParaAthletics Championships start at just £10 for adults with children’s tickets priced at £5 for every session. Over half of tickets (500,000) cost £20 or less and a family of four can enjoy watching a ParaAthletics gold-medal session for just £30.

Details on ticket prices and timetable for the 2017 Championships can be found at this link http://www.london2017athletics.com/news/45519
