NORTHERN U17, U20 & SENIOR INDOOR CHAMPIONSHIPS – Took place last Saturday and Sunday in Sheffield.

200m SM Heat 1 ANTONIO INFANTINO 1st (SB 21.62), in Semi-Final ANTONIO finished 1st (SB 21.29) taking .33 of a second off his Heat time, in the Final ANTONIO won the Gold Medal (SB 21.04) taking .25 of a second off his Semi-Final time

CROSS COUNTRY CLUB CHAMPION – Congratulations to LAUREN MALTZ who became the Under 11 Champion following her run at Trent Park

START FITNESS METROPOLITAN LEAGUE – The fourth fixture of five took place last Saturday at Trent Park

It was a bright but rainy day, although this was not the normal course I have been told it was very testing. It proved to be another excellent day with RICHARD GOODMAN winning the Senior race by 20 seconds, making it 3 wins out of 3. ELLIOT DEE won the Under 17 race by 9 seconds and SOPHIA STAAB had an impressive win in the Under 15 race, winning by 31 seconds.

In the Senior Women’s race NAOMI TASCHIMOWITZ in a sprint finish came 2nd just 1 second behind MOLLY RENFER of Highgate Harriers, with VICTORIA PRITCHARD not to far away in 3rd place. Other top 5 finishes came from AIMI WEIGHTMAN U13 finishing 3rd, SAMUEL GREENSTEIN and DYLAN MICHEL were 3rd and 4th respectively in the Under 13 race, and JOSEPHINE CHADWICK and SARAH BUTLER were 4th and 5th respectively in the Under 17 race.

The team results were encouraging, with our Under 11 Girls team of 5 packed well, and finished in 4th place keeping them in 3rd overall. The Under 13 Girls team finished 4th, and maintained their 2nd place overall, with the Under 13 Boys taking 2nd place on the day. The Under 15/17 Women finished in 2nd place some 32 points in front of Thames Valley Harriers, and we now hold a 68 point lead over TVH with the final fixture to come. Finally the Senior Women team packed well to finish in 3rd place.

Preparing for a Spring Marathon with International Marathon Athlete Mara Yamauchi 1 February 6:30-8:30pm: If you are a runner preparing for a Spring marathon in 2017 this workshop is for you! Mara will take you through the essential steps of marathon training covering nutrition, hydration, recovery, and race preparation as an athlete and coach to ensure that you are fully prepared. LCDP Workshop: Physical Preparation -Olympic Lifting with Rob Thickpenny 4 February 10am-1pm. This workshop will explore different methods of strength and power development with a focus on Olympic lifting and other strength related movement patterns such as back squat, front squat and dead lift. Movement Skills Workshop 2- With Rob Earl 19 February 10am-4pm. This workshop has been designed to support a better understanding of key fundamental movement patterns and physical preparation that are essential to help improve long term health and performance in running jumping and throwing. This will aid coaches to develop the coaching eye where to look and what to look for when an individual moves. FUNDING OPPORTUNITIES – GLL Sport Foundation funding: This is the largest independent athlete support programme in the UK. The Foundation provides athletes competing from a Regional – Olympic and Paralympic level with tangible support.  Athlete Benefits include: Training membership – access to over 250 GLL and partner operated sport and leisure venues across the UK to support your training programmes, Sport performance – access to sport science and physiotherapy programmes, Financial – access to £200-£1,250 cash awards depending on award level

SOAR WINTER WARMER – Highgate Harriers have organized an Indoor meeting at Lee Valley on Wednesday 1 February. The event will include BMC 800m and will also have the Soar Mile & Soar 3,000m races. In the mile, we are offering £250 to the fastest Man and Woman and in the 3,000m there is £100 up for grabs for the quickest Male & Female. NIGHT OF THE 10,000m PBs – Will take place on Saturday 20 May at Parliament Hill Fields, in which the Highgate Harriers 25 lap festival will include the GB trials for the IAAF World Championships. 
Last year approximately 5,000 spectators joined us, 100% free in lane 3 to watch. And again, we simply want to extend the invite for our community to come together and celebrate our sport. We will have licenced bars on the track, food, live music and I am hoping to have a very special VIP seminar speaker. AN INVITE TO THE WORLD PARA ATHLETIC CHAMPIONSHIPS LONDON 2017 In July of next year, the London Stadium at the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park will light up once again for the historic World Para Athletics Championships, following the success of the London 2012 Paralympic Games. 
To thank charities, community groups and foundations for their hard work and to mark the valuable contributions they have made to many people, especially young people, London 2017 are delighted to offer the following session specific invite to the World Para Athletics Championships, which take place between the 14th-23rd July 2017. London 2017’s ambition is to mark the occasion by giving children the opportunity to attend the Championships in the last week of the school term.
The terms of the invitation – Tickets cost £3 per child (16 and under), Tickets cost £5 per adult (over 16) Accompanying chaperones can enter for free. Please use public transport to access the London Stadium. WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS 2017 KIT CARRIERSKATIE ALCOCK who managed our very successful London 2012 team, has volunteered to run our kit carrier team at London 2017. The IAAF World Championships and World Para Athletics Championships only happen every two years and for them both to be held in London after the UK hosting both the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games is not only history-making but exciting for the sport and for those who live, study and work in London.

England Athletics will be working alongside the Local Organising Committee (London 2017 Ltd) for both Championships, to recruit teams of Kit Carriers. This offers the opportunity for approximately 180 young people to experience being part of the Championships and for some to get a taste of volunteering for the first time. Teams will have the opportunity to volunteer for either one or both Championships. The role of Kit Carrier is invaluable for ensuring that athletes can feel safe in the knowledge that their belongings will be looked after, allowing them to concentrate on the task of being competitive and trust that they will be able to access their belongings after they have competed.

Shaftesbury Barnet Harriers have been invited to apply to bring a team of 16-18yrs olds, who will carry out the role of Kit Carriers for all competing athletes. JUNIOR PARKRUN – Saracens Sport Foundation are looking for a group of adult volunteers that can help create the first ever junior parkrun in Barnet. We need dedicated people who would like to give a couple of hours of their time on a Sunday morning every week to set up and deliver the junior parkrun event. By being part of this project you will be helping to encourage the next generation to take part in regular running. We’re looking for volunteers who will be advocates for the event, who can help promote this great regular 2km running programme (participants to be aged 4-14 years) within their local communities in Barnet.
Event organiser – Joining a partnership of staff and volunteers delivering this new programme, you’ll be the event organisers on the ground on a weekly basis.
Event volunteers – Meeting youngsters and families in the morning before the event, helping marshal the course (2km) and helping people get their times at the end.
Admin volunteers – We also need 1-2 volunteers that would be happy to spend an additional hour a week uploading the results of the weekly run to the parkrun system.

SOUTHERN CROSS COUNTRY CHAMPIONSHIPS – Takes place on Saturday 28 January at Parliament Hill Fields, Hampstead Heath (Satnav NW5 1QR) nearest station is Gospel Oak.  Timetable 11.00am U15 Boys (4500m), 11.20am U13 Girls (3000m), 11.35am U13 Boys (3000m), 11.50am U15 Girls (4000m), 12.10pm U17 Men (6000m), 12.40pm U20 Women (6000m), 1.05pm U17 Women (5000m), 1.30pm U20 Men (8000m), 2.05pm Senior Women (8000m), 2.50pm Senior Men (15000m). In the Senior Men’s race times will be stopped counted 90 minutes after the race starts.

NORTH WEST LONDON LEAGUE – Information on the fourth fixture of five which takes place on Saturday 18 February at Hampstead Heath Extension.
The race courses are all within an area known as Hampstead Heath Extension, off Hampstead Way.   This area has not previously been used for cross country running although it is not far distant from the much loved and often used Parliament Hill Fields. The courses devised by London Heathside within the Extension area should work well for young athlete events being closely confined and spectator friendly. The slight drawback is that there is no car parking within the parkland area and some of the nearby roads have restricted parking. Car sharing or better still use of public transport is advised.   (Golders Green Underground Station is about half mile). To assist you in getting to the park area the postcode for SatNav users is (NW11 7DP)
The first race will start at 12 noon (Under 11 Girls) – programme will then follow the usual pattern. There are changing rooms with toilets are available.

SARACENS SPORT FOUNDATION – Little athletics programme is an athletics ‘Multi Skills’ programme for children aged 4-9 years. The programme is designed to teach children fundamental movement skills of athletics – running, jumping and throwing. The sessions are game based and as of September there will be a progression throughout the term.
LAP runs on a Tuesday and Thursday from 4.30-5.30pm – Term time only.  
1st Legacy athletics club is a pathway club for children aged 10-15 years new to athletics. Children are introduced to all the different athletics disciplines and have the opportunity to develop running, jumping and running skills that we hope they will then go onto use as a participant in the formal athletics club structure or in any other sport for activity they choose to progress to. The lead coach is Gintare Dargeviciute who brings a wealth of experience and knowledge to the club.
1st Leg AC runs on a Tuesday and Thursday from 5.00–6.00pm – Term time only.
