50TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE FAMOUS FOSBURY FLOP On the 50th anniversary of the famous Fosbury flop Olympic high jump clearance at Mexico 1968, STUART WEIR shares great insight from an interview with the technique’s pioneer which was published on the Athletics Weekly website.

DICK FOSBURY won gold at the Olympics in 1968, exactly 50 years ago, and changed the high jump forever.
The anniversary made me recall meeting him at a reception during the 2011 World Championships and hearing how he had pioneered the technique which was to be called ‘the Fosbury flop’.
Initially high jumpers ran straight at the bar. Then the scissors technique became the normal method of clearance, with the jumper throwing one leg and then the other over the bar in a kind of scissors movement. By the 1930s the Western roll technique had become popular, with the inner leg used for the take-off, while the outer leg was thrust up to lead the body sideways over the bar. The straddle technique saw jumpers take off as in the Western roll, but rotating their torso around the bar belly-down.

FOSBURY recalls his introduction to athletics at school: “In track and field our teacher had us try every event so I ran, I threw and I jumped. And he taught me to high jump using the Western roll where the jumper ran at the bar with a straight approach and aimed their arm and leg at the bar to go over belly first and land in the pit – which was the standard technique at the time.
“The other technique that he taught us was the scissors, where you run at the bar and clear the bar with your seat while your legs did a scissor kick over it. For me this was a simple technique. And of course in those days you were landing in sawdust or wood chip, which was a technological advance on sand. So the landing was as important as clearing the bar so that you survived the jump!
“As things improved, wood chip was a good environment for us to land in. All the schools had sawdust pits then the new environment was with foam and that is what really opened it up, because we were jumping into a safer environment.”
“They raised the bar and I knew I had to try something different to get over it”
Now for anyone living in the modern era, it may be hard to grasp and believe that before FOSBURY, no Olympic high jumper went over the bar backwards. But that was how it was.
Then FOSBURY, a frustrated schoolboy obsessed with the high jump, realised that he was never going to improve using traditional methods.
The best high jumper in the world at the time was the Russian VALERY BRUMEL. In the years 1960-63, he took an Olympic silver and broke the world record six times before becoming Olympic champion in Tokyo in 1964. The young FOSBURY studied him.
“I read everything I could about his technique and his training,” he says. “That was where I learned about his speed – his greatest asset.”
FOSBURY was using the scissors technique and felt comfortable with it but his coach explained that the technique was too limiting, so he would have to change in order to progress. Of course, the coach wanted him to change to the classical style.
“I tried the straddle technique and the belly roll technique but had very poor results, so I asked my coach if I could go back to the scissors. He said, ‘don’t quit yet but it is your decision’. So I decided to go back to scissors and at age 16 (in 1963) I jumped a personal best height of 1.65m. Then they raised the bar and I knew I had to try something different to get over it.
“I knew I had to lift my hips up and to do that I needed to get my shoulders back out of the way. And I cleared the bar at the next height, eventually jumping 1.77m so I improved by 15cm that day.
“In that competition I changed my position from sitting on the bar to lying flat and going over on my back – upside down from everyone else. The change made me competitive and I finished fourth in the meet.
“For the next two years I would lead with my shoulders and was going over the bar at a slight angle. All the time I was doing it by feel as there was no model to follow. I was creating it as I went. In my second year (senior year in high school) I had turned my back to the bar and arched over the bar to fall into the pit. And by then by 1965 the flop had arrived.”

It wasn’t until 1968 that the Olympics came into his thoughts. “I had no ambitions because the Olympics seemed so far away and such a high level of competition that I never imagined reaching it,” he says. “I did not have that Olympic dream until 1968 when my training began to produce better results.”
He went to regional trials and USA nationals and was selected for the Mexico City 1968 Olympics. He jumped 2.24m to win the gold medal from team-mate ED CARUTHERS, with Russians third and fourth. Sadly his hero, BRUMEL, had retired following a motorcycle accident.
Having won the gold and broken the American record, FOSBURY asked for the bar to be raised to 2.29m, hoping to break BRUMEL’S five-year-old world record of 2.28m. However, none of his attempts at 2.29m came close.
Contemporary reports say that while coaches were appalled at his unorthodox approach, the crowd was captivated. FOSBURY’S analysis of the 1968 Olympics is that there were better jumpers in the competition but that his technique gave him a definite advantage. With hindsight, he adds: “No one realised what the advantage would be. But, as history has proved, this was a better technique.”
FOSBURY never set out to change the sport. He just found a technique that worked for him.
“I have had the blessing and good fortune to have made a contribution to the sport but I did not set out to do this,” he says. “I was not trying to change the event. I knew that my technique was my path to success. And I had this technique which was mine – mine alone – and I thought that someday someone would use it. But who knew whether it would be two or three high jumpers or 200.
“The criticism of other coaches did not really matter as long as I was meeting the rules and reaching the standards.”
That in the 1972 Olympics, four years later, 28 of the 40 competitors used FOSBURY’S technique vindicated him totally.
FOSBURY is quick to point out that he was not the first to jump backwards as DEBBIE BRILL, and another jumper in Montana, also came up with the approach of jumping backwards. He adds with a twinkle: “I was just blessed to be the first one to discover it and have success with it at this high level. So I got naming rights, something I am very proud of.”
Another unique contribution that FOSBURY made to the high jump was the development of special shoes with ADI DASSLER (of Adidas).

“At that time high jump shoes were leather and on the sole, some kind of grippy surface,” he says. “High jump shoes are very special shoes for our event because they have a build-up on the forefront. After my success in the Olympics I talked with ADI. We had four spikes at the front and also heel spikes for traction and to keep us from slipping on take-off. After the meeting, ADI sent me shoes with a single spike.”
DASSLER was a designer and an inventor of athletics equipment and FOSBURY an engineer. Together they worked through several prototypes to reach a shoe that worked well in high jump.
FOSBURY failed to make the US team for the 1972 Olympics and his career was effectively over. Having proved to the world that his technique worked, he had arguably achieved his goal.
Of course, FOSBURY competed in the amateur era. He said that the flop “brought me gifts – not necessarily monetarily … but I have met presidents and kings, seen the world, shared my life with wonderful people. It opened doors and allowed people to perceive me in a positive light.”

On seeking technical advice “MailChimp” was recommended as the best way for SBH to go forward. There is one thing you should be aware off is that when you receive an email from me, the footer at the bottom has 4 options, of which one is “Unsubscribe Me From List”. JOYCE SMITH MBE RECEIVED SPIRIT OF LONDON AWARD The Spirit of London campaign was launched at City Hall, London to celebrate the unique spirit of the 26.2-mile event and the many extraordinary stories of those who have been involved since its first edition in 1981.

The inaugural winners 37 years ago – joint men’s race champions DICK BEARDSLEY and INGE SIMONSEN and women’s race winner JOYCE SMITH – were among the award recipients, along with marathon world record-holder PAULA RADCLIFFE and wheelchair racing greats DAVID WEIR and TANNI GREY-THOMPSON.

The British Olympian and former 3000m world record-holder won the inaugural London Marathon in 1981 in 2:29:57 at the age of 43.

The Virgin Money London Marathon this year celebrates its 35th anniversary and while one running great – PAULA RADCLIFFE prepares to enjoy what could potentially be a final hurrah over 26.2 miles at the age of 45 next year.

JOYCE SMITH was ahead of her time and was two years older than the now world record-holder and only in her second year of competitive marathon running when she claimed victory in London.
When JOYCE began competitive athletics in the 1950s the longest track race in international competition available to women was 880 yards, so she moved up in distance as the events became available. From being introduced to running at a summer camp when she was 15 to finishing 11th in the 1984 Olympic marathon at the age of 46, the progression of her career is a fascinating tale.
“Obviously right through my athletics career, the events weren’t there,” the 80-year-old told Athletics Weekly at the London Marathon’s recent annual lunch event. “I moved up events as they came in so that’s why my career obviously prolonged.”
“Obviously right through my athletics career, the events weren’t there … I moved up events as they came in”
After success on the country including a full set of world medals and world record-breaking performances on the track, JOYCE smashed the British record when running her first marathon in 1979. She improved that mark three more times before running 2:29:57 to win the inaugural London Marathon in 1981. That was the first time a British woman and any female over the age of 40 had gone sub-2:30.
She returned to London a year later and retained her title, clocking another British record of 2:29:43 and becoming, at the age of 44 years and 195 days, the oldest woman to win the race. It’s a record that still stands today.
“Before I did the marathon I had found that running the 3000m at 41, I was having problems,” said Smith, who had earlier captained the GB women’s team at the 1972 Olympics in Munich where she ran the 1500m. “I tried to make the Europeans in 1978 and was having injuries and goodness knows what, so I knew I couldn’t track train any more. I just wanted to do a marathon like lots of people to say you’ve done one.
“The first one (in Cheshire) went well and within three months I did another two – the Avon International, I won that, and then the Tokyo International, and I won that.
“I just wanted to do a marathon like lots of people to say you’ve done one”
“So it created this new big world. In the first year of my marathons I did six marathons, as I didn’t know how long it was going to last because of my age.”
JOYCE would enjoy another six years of competitive running during which time she finished ninth at the first IAAF World Championships in Helsinki and 11th in the first women’s Olympic marathon in Los Angeles. She helped to take the event to new levels – her 2:29:43 lifetime best set in London in 1982 would have seen her top the UK rankings in both 2014 and 2013 and she believes she could have gone quicker“Looking back I wish I’d been able to do it (the marathon) in my 30s,” she said. “Because, you know, obviously I was reasonable at it and what would I have achieved?”

CURRENT DISTRIBUTION OF SHAFTESBURY INFORMATION Currently I notify members (by email) using “MailChimp”. The reason I changed, was in November last year “Gmail” put a limit of 100 addresses that users could send to in a 24-hour period, and currently I send to approximately 850 members each issue.

On seeking technical advice “MailChimp” was recommended as the best way for SBH to go forward. There is one thing you should be aware off is that when you receive an email from me, the footer at the bottom has 4 options, of which one is “Unsubscribe Me From List”. Could I ask you not to select this as if you do you will be automatically removed from my distribution list.

NEW CLUB RECORD – Congratulations to THOMAS CADWALLADER who at the Biggleswade Open Meeting at Sandy on 29 September, broke the Under 11 Boys 600m club record with a time of (1:50.61), the previous record was (1:55.8) set by SAMUEL GREENSTEIN at Watford on 7 June 2015.

START FITNESS METROPOLITAN LEAGUE – The first fixture of five takes place on Saturday 13 October at Claybury, Essex. The  club and team managers would like to see a very big turnout of athletes for this fixtureFor all details see upcoming fixtures below.

Last season was one of the club’s best years overall, individually GIANLEO STUBBS won the Under 11 Boys title winning 5 out of 5 races, 2nd was new member ZICO JONES (Barnet & District last season) and THOMAS CADWALLADER finished 3rd place. Under 11 Girls EVIE REDPATH finished in 8th place. Under 13 Boys SAMUEL GREENSTEIN finished in 4th place and THEO BODEN finished in 4th place. Under 13 Girls LOUISA STAAB finished just outside the top 10 in 14th place. Under 15 Boys JOE HEATHER finished just outside the top 10 in 12th place. Under 15 Girls winner was another new member to Shaftesbury FREYA STAPLETON (Herts Phoenix last season) with GRACE INGLES finishing in 2nd place and ELENA RONCARATI finishing in 3rd place. Under 17 Men DYLAN HEPWORTH finished in 6th place and BEN KELLY finished in 10th place. Under 17 Women featured 4 in the top 10 SOPHIA STAAB finished in 2nd place, JOSEPHINE CHADWICK finished in 4th place, SARAH BUTLER finished in 6th place and finally LIDIA KYRIACOU finished in 10th place. Senior Men with 4 out of the 5 races to count RICHARD GOODMAN won 3 and 2nd in the other, with PHILLIP CROUT finishing in 8th place. In the Under 20 Men THOMAS BUTLER had a comfortable win with JEREMY DEMPSEY finishing in 9th place. V50 Women JO KENT (2nd Claim) won 5 out of 5 races.

Our individual success as you will see was reflected in the final team positions, also we had an amazing turnout at most fixtures. Whereas teams maybe had 2 or 3 finishers only, this is reflected in the team result, but generally we had 5 or 6 runners which enabled us finish above a lot of teams.

These are the minimum finishers to record the best team result – In the Under 11 to Under 17 Men & Women and Veteran Men & Women it is 4 to score, Senior Women 5 to score and Senior Men 12 to score.

Final team positions – Under 11 Boys finished 2nd to Victoria Park & Tower Hamlets by 1 point. Under 11 Girls finished in 6th place. Under 13 Boys finished in 3rd place. Under 13 Girls finished in 6th place. Under 17/20 Men finished in 3rd place. Under 17/20 Women won by an astonishing record points total, winning by 150 points and the “B” team finished 4th. Senior Men finished in 5th place, to improve we need a minimum of 18-20 runners, with a good proportion in the top 50 to give us a chance of improving. Veteran Men we have a good squad of oldun’s therefore we could challenge for promotion out of Division 3. Senior Women unfortunately due to the lack of numbers the team was relegated, so the challenge is there to regain our place in Division 1. Veteran Women overall we are lacking in numbers.

The first fixture at Claybury is the first fixture to count in the SBH Winter Cross Country Points league.

ONE HUNDRED AND COUNTING – Congratulations to HUGH RICHARDS who at the Blandford Parkrun completed his 100th race

NORTH LONDON AQUATICS – Here’s a request from our Club Treasurer, GEOFF MORPHITIS, asking you to support a local charity.
Please read the following urgent message from our friends at North London Aquatics. I’ve pledged an amount in support of their fund-raising which will only be taken up if the target is met. The vast majority of our members live within a couple of miles of the facility and you all have friends who live locally. So please support this initiative for the benefit of all members of the local community. As they say, it’s not just the size of the pledge but more importantly the number of you who support this once in a lifetime initiative. Thanks.

Dear All – Can you help us build a deep water inclusive pool with over FIFTY aquatic activities at the new Barnet Copthall Sports Centre in Mill Hill.
Please, please watch our video below by Middlesex University students and narrated by Joanna Lumley!    https://youtu.be/7l1Ujd8Ijow
Please pledge £2, £5 or whatever you wish towards our crowdfunding campaign. We pitch to the Mayor of London in October and need as many pledges as possible prior to that.
When you’ve pledged please forward onto your contacts and leave us a message on the Spacehive page:  www.spacehive.com/north-London-Aquatics

Thanks everyone! We really, really appreciate it!

BRITISH CROSS COUNTRY GREATS Athletics Weekly are conducting a vote for the greatest cross country runners in history. Shaftesbury has 2 of our greatest athletes DAVE BEFORD OBE and JOYCE SMITH MBE in the British Male and Female categories.

British MaleDAVE BEFORD winner of the English National in 1971 and runner-up behind the guesting ROD DIXON in 1973, he also won the International – the forerunner to the World Championships in San Sebastian winning by almost half a minute.Prior to the above DAVE won the Southern double in 1970 that has entered folklore, winning the senior title over nine miles of Parliament Hill and then minutes later starting the six-mile junior race and winning that to.

British Female – JOYCE SMITH sensationally winning the 1972 International title, she was then runner-up to Italy’s PAOLA CACCHI in the first ever IAAF World Championships in 1973. Even more notable was the length of her career. JOYCE won the English title as JOYCE BYATT of the now defunct Hampstead Harriers in 1959 and 1960 and returned to win it in 1973, also winning the first London Marathon in 1981, then retaing the title in 1982.

GENDER EQUALITY FOR INTER-COUNTIES RACE DISTANCE The following article was published in the 28 September issue of Athletics Weekly.

Senior men and women will run the same distance of 10km at the UK Inter-Counties Championships in Prestwold Hall, Loughborough, on 9 March.

The event doubles as the British Athletics Cross Challenge final and trial for the IAAF World Cross Country Championships in Aarhus and, the organisers are adjusting the races from the usual distances of 12km for men and 8km for women.

The Saucony English National Cross Country Championships has come under pressure in the last 12 months to also reduce its distances, however a poll of athletes at this year’s event showed most runners wished to continue racing the traditional distances, with fears that the size of the women’s field might be hit if the distance was increased.

DOHA 2019 ONE YEAR TO GO The following article was published on the Athletics Weekly website recently, 27 September 2018.
Organisers unveil the upgraded Khalifa International Stadium with revolutionary cooling system and ticketing programme to mark 365 days to go until the IAAF World Championships

The organising committee for next year’s IAAF World Championships in Doha, Qatar, opened the doors to the upgraded Khalifa International Stadium in Aspire Zone on Thursday to celebrate the one year to go milestone.
The stadium, with its state-of-the-art sustainable cooling system, was showcased, while the ticketing programme was also unveiled for the event which will take place from September 27 to October 6 2019.

“Today is a very important day in our readiness preparations,” said vice president and director general of the IAAF World Championships local organising committee and vice president of the IAAF, DAHLAN AL HAMAD.
“Everything is in place including a growing excitement and energy amongst the local community. In hosting the first ever IAAF World Athletics Championships in the Middle East, we have a shared vision and commitment in partnering with the IAAF, to grow participation of this wonderful sport across Qatar, the region and the world.

“To have such an ambition requires innovative, creative and bold thinking,” he added. “That is why an exciting new schedule exists with new formats. That’s why this stadium has cooling technology and why we want our young athletes and our local community to experience it live for themselves. That’s why we will introduce a midnight marathon. All these developments take imagination but stem from a single goal of enhancing athletics worldwide.”
The competition schedule, featuring the midnight marathon and 4x400m mixed relay, was revealed earlier this year.

While the temperature outside the stadium was 37°C, inside the conditions were set to 24-26°C. “The Global Sustainability Assessment System (GSAS) certified stadium, which will also host 2022 FIFA World Cup matches, is ready to play host to the 2019 Asian Athletics Championships in April 2019, the official test event for the IAAF World Athletics Championships later in the year,” organisers added.

Fans were encouraged to register their interest in tickets at iaafworldathleticschamps.com/doha2019/tickets to ensure they receive information, alerts and reminders for when tickets go on sale in November. Ticket options include “traditional Arab cushioned Majlis seating”, finish line seats, “taster options” priced at 14 EURO / 60 QAR and family and group discounts.

Commenting on one year to go, IAAF president SEBASTIAN COE said: “Qatar has been hosting official IAAF events for over 21 years and in the organising committee we have a trusted partner who is committed to delivering a World Athletics Championship which makes a real difference to the world of athletics.
