WORLD INDOOR CHAMPIONSHIPS Took place in Portland, Oregon from 17-20 March.

Congratulations to DAN BRAMBLE who in a very competitive long jump competition finished in 6th place with a seasons best (8.14m). This was 20cm longer than his winning British Championship jump, and he is ranked UK No.2 in 2016.

SHAFTESBURY WIN THE SOUTHERN ROAD RELAYS They took place last Sunday at the Cyclopark in Gravesend, Kent. The Men’s team repeated its success in 2015, with an awesome performance. Leg 1 GLEN WATTS in a tight finish came home in 3rd place. Leg 2 ANTHONY WHITEMAN moved us up to 2nd place just 9 seconds off the lead. Leg 3 PHILLIP CROUT moved us into the lead by 28 seconds. Leg 4 BEN ROCHFORD U20 was up against Alex Yee of Kent who ran the fastest time of the day, finished in 2nd place some 28 seconds down. Leg 5 MARK PEARCE held 2nd place with Kent’s Owen Hind recording the 6th fastest time of the day, they opened up a 1 minute 23 second lead. Leg 6 RICHARD WILLIAMS pulled Kent’s lead back to 22 seconds, recording the 7th fastest time of the day. Leg 7 RICHARD GOODMAN produced a devastating run, taking us into a 39 seconds lead, with the 4th fastest time of the day. Leg 8 WILLIAM RYLE-HODGES with the fastest time on this leg, extended our lead to 1 minute 22 seconds. Leg 9 RICHARD HORTON as he was running on his own produced an awesome run, with the 2nd fastest time of the day, the team were now 2 minutes and 5 seconds ahead. Leg 10 RONAN BREEN ran a solid leg with the 9th fastest time on this leg, the lead was now 1 minute and 20 seconds. Leg 11 proved to be decisive with DAN WATTS recording the 7th fastest time on this leg, extending the lead to 1 minute and 50 seconds. The final Leg ROBBIE LIGHTOWLER with supporters all along the route, brought the team home as Southern Champions.

The Long Leg (odd numbers) is 7.2km long and the Short Leg (even numbers) is 4.8km long.

Team result 1st SBH (3:19.30), 2nd Aldershot, Farnham & District (3:19.44), 3rd Highgate Harriers (3:21.05), 34 teams finished.

SHAFTESBURY DOMINATE THE COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIPS The Hertfordshire and Middlesex Indoor Championships took place at Lee Valley last week-end, with the club coming away with 16 County Champions. Congratulations to the following Hertfordshire Champions – RONAN BAGAI (60m), JACK HUGHES (200m), SCARLETT KENT (800m), YASMIN LAKIN (Long & Triple Jump), MOLLY HOPPING (Shot), MICHAEL NICHOLLS (Shot) and Middlesex – MICA AGYEPONG (60m & 200m), MITTIO MOHAMMADIAN (300m), HAMZA KADIR (800m), KHALID-ALI AHMED (800m), FINN HARVEY (1500m), CRISTINA POTTER (60m Hurdles & Shot), NATHAN GARDNER (High Jump)  and WILLIAM LEVY (High Jump).

60m Hurdles – U15G Straight Final CRISTINA POTTER won the Gold Medal (PB 9.79) taking .20 of a second off her 13 February time

60m Hurdles – U17W Straight Final RACHEL CARTER won the Silver Medal (PB 9.48), SOPHIA OBI finished 4th (PB 9.81) taking .21 of a second off her 23 January time

High Jump – U17M Straight Final WILLIAM LEVY won the Gold Medal (1.65m)

Long Jump – U17W Straight Final SOPHIA OBI won the Bronze Medal (SB 4.04m)

Triple Jump – U17M Straight Final ABBAS ADEJONWO won the Bronze Medal (PB 13.28m) adding 20cm to his 13 February jump, and is ranked UK No.6 U17 in 2016

Shot 3kg – U15G Straight Final CRISTINA POTTER won the Gold Medal (PB 8.36m) adding 1.12m to her 2015 put

VIRGIN MONEY LONDON MARATHON – If any Humbug is running, can you please email me your race number.

DAVID STONE – Ran the Jerusalem 10k on 18 March finishing in 9th place (PB 37.53) with around 6000 plus finishers, the winning time was (34.07). He was initially running the 5k but switched at the last minute, and being a diminutive figure he still managed to get a place near the front, behind the elite runners. The course is renowned as being extremely hilly as well.

ENGLAND 10,000m CHAMPIONSHIPS Takes place on Saturday 21 May at the Parliament Hill Fields Athletic Track, Staff Yard, Highgate Road (Satnav NW5 1QR).

This is the qualifying race for the GB&NI team for the Rio Olympics (Qualification Standard 28:00.00)

29th February – Race entry open to Men who’ve run sub 32.00 minutes & Women who’ve run sub 37.30 minutes since 1st January 2015 (track or road)

14th March – Race entry open to Men who’ve run sub 33.00 minutes & Women who’ve run sub 38.30 minutes respectively since 1st January 2015 (track or road)

EASTERN YOUNG ATHLETES LEAGUE COMPOSITE TEAM WITH BARNET & DISTRICT (UNDER 13/15/17 MEN/WOMEN) The first fixture of five takes place on Sunday 17 April at the Ridlins Wood Athletic Track, Woodcock Road, Stevenage (Satnav SG2 9PA).

Travel arrangements – A coach will be leaving Allianz Park at 9.30am, with a further pick up at the Barnet Odeon cinema at 9.45am. Please advise Joyce or Brenton if you wish to use the coach.

LONDON INTER CLUB CHALLEGE INCORPORATING THE LONDON COLLEGES ATHLETIC SERIES (ALL AGE-GROUPS INCLUDING U13s) The first of four fixtures takes place on Sunday 17 April at the Lee Valley Athletics Centre, 61 Meridian Way, Edmonton (Satnav N9 0AR). Is free to all members of Shaftesbury, but why not bring a friend and introduce him to athletics (there is a charge for non-members, £3 for the first event and £2 for subsequent events). Registration opens at 10.30am, and closes 30 minutes before the published start time. All events are for both male and female age-groups unless stated.

The North London Half Marathon (Road) took place in Brent on 20 March

DAVID GREENSTEIN V50 477th (PB 1:34.30), 6797 runners finished, the winner was Joseph Kemei of Run Fast (62.41)

The Clydebank 5k (Road) took place on 19 March

ANDREW LAWLER U20 6th (1st U20 PB 14.53) taking 25 seconds off his 2015 time and is ranked UK No.4 U20 in 2016, the winner was James Bownes of Trafford (14.36)

The London Colleges Series took place at Parliament Hill on 19 March

200m – SM C JOHNOI JOSEPHS U23 1st (SB 24.43)

The Hornet Invitational took place in Sacramento, California, USA on 18-19 March

800m GEORGIA BELL (Berkeley University) 3rd (SB 2:09.21) 

The John Mitchell Alabama Relays took place in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, USA on 17-19 March

Hammer 7.26kg DEMPSEY MCGUIGAN (Ole Mississippi University) 3rd (PB 68.15m) adding 1.25m to his 2015 throw, and is ranked UK No.1 in 2016

The TCU Invitational took place in Fort Worth, Texas, USA on 17-18 March

Hammer 7.26kg FELLAN MCGUIGAN U23 (Texas Christian University) 1st (PB 61.31m) adding 7m to his 2014 throw, and is ranked UK No.2 U23 in 2016

The South East Schools Championships (Cross Country) took place in Harrow on 28 February

Junior Boys LUCA STUBBS (St Alban’s) won the Bronze Medal (13.05), NATHAN MASTERS (St Columba’s) 26th (14.24), 83 runners finished. The winner was Leo Brewer of Brighton College (12.50). Team result 1st Perse (121 points), 2nd Shrewsbury (158 points), 3rd Coopers Company (173 points), 5th St Alban’s (219 points), 6th St Columba’s (225 points)

Intermediate Boys GEORGE GROOM (St Columba’s) won the Silver Medal (20.05), HENRY FULTON (St Columba’s) 15th (21.45), JOSH EDWARDS (St Columba’s) 60th (24.20), 91 runners finished. The winner was Ricky Lutakome of John Fisher (19.30). Team result 1st Harrow (113 points), 2nd Shrewsbury (122 points), 3rd Perse (131 points), 4th St Columba’s (154 points)

Senior Boys OLIVER GREENSTEIN (St Alban’s) 62nd (29.49), 104 runners finished. The winner was Joe Bird of Sedbergh (24.19). Team result 1st St Alban’s (67 points), 2nd Sedbergh (83 points), 3rd Shrewsbury (97 points)

As a member of Shaftesbury Barnet Harriers you can apply for a form which will give you membership of Allianz Park, you can pick up the form from the reception at Allianz Park. Any official coach of Shaftesbury Barnet Harriers gains entry free of charge.
