AUGUSTCongratulations to JENNY POLL and NICK, who married her boyfriend of 15 years last week, it was a beautiful day, filled with love and laughter. Her fox red Labrador BAXTER was the ring bearer and stole the show. Photographs are of JENNY and NICK pus BAXTER in his finest suit (which JENNY made) on the big day.

SEPTEMBER – A sad occasion for the Club, when ETHAN WALSH passed away. ETHAN was involved in a car accident on 11 September, and tragically, passed away, aged 27, from his injuries the following Friday.

ETHAN joined Shaftesbury in January 2014 aged 16. In his early years as a junior, he was a regular in the UK YDL, and BAL teams. He finished 2nd in the European Clubs Junior Championships in Turkey, and again in Spain. His personal best was 4.90m achieved in the 2016 UK YDL match at Eton. His 3 years as an Under 23 saw him progress to being a 5m vaulter, with a personal best of 5.30m. In 2019, he won a bronze medal in the England Championships. 2020 saw him vault his current personal best of 5.36m. He also won a silver medal in the England Indoor Championships, and a bronze medal in the England Outdoor Championships. From 2021, ETHAN was a regular in the National Athletics League team, and in 2023 he won a silver medal in the England Outdoor Championships.

Photograph of ETHAN taken at the 2016 European Junior Club Championships in Castellon, Spain. ETHAN who had competed in 2015 at Istanbul, Turkey, was a member of a young and relatively inexperienced SBH team with only 4 top year juniors arrived in Castellon via Barcelona with no real expectations other than achieving a 3rd place finish on a good day to match the 2015 result. The Turkish and Spanish teams were in buoyant mood boasting strong squads based on having finished in the top 2 in 2014 and 2015. ETHAN produced a vault of (4.80m) to finish in second place, enabling the SBH team to secure an outstanding win with 123 points, second was Fernbahce, Turkey with 116 points and third Castellon, Spain with 93 points.

THE SECOND RE-UNION AT THE SHAFTESBURY TAVERN – Phil Cunningham sent me the following;
Last year a group of us meet at the Wrestler’s Pub where the first known picture of Shaftesbury Harriers was taken. This year we thought we would have another get together in the Shaftesbury Tavern in Hornsey. We will be meeting at 7pm on Wednesday 4 December 2024. The Shaftesbury Tavern is located on the corner of Shaftesbury Road and Hornsey Road. It would be great to see some of you there!

The Shaftesbury Barnet Harriers Centenary Year Book states: And so it came about that in 1890 a few lads, most of whom would have been about 16 years of age, assembled at Jubilee Hall and decided to form a running club and called it Shaftesbury Harriers. Jubilee Hall was then newly built and used for dances, concerts and such-like social events, and was over what was then called a coffee tavern. It stood at the corner of Hornsey Road and Fairbridge Road, not far from Hornsey Road railway station, and about a mile from Hampstead Heath.
It seems probable that, like others of the many clubs being formed about that time, the title came from a road in the district. Possibly some lads lived in Shaftesbury Road close by: with its tall Victorian houses the road has not changed so much with the passing years. The Shaftesbury Tavern is still on the corner.

Photograph is of our get together last year from left to right, RAY POWELL (49 years with the club), MARTIN GREY (56 years), TONY SUNDERLAND (69 years), PHIL CUNNINGHAM (50 years), JOHN DRYDEN (52 years), DAVE BEDFORD (59 years), PHIL RICHARDSON (63 years), JOHN KELLY (a mere 44 years) and JULIAN GOATER (57 years). GERALD ALTERMAN (43 years) and JO NEWELL also attended but unfortunately needed to leave before the photo. Well over 500 years of club membership between them!
