The third fixture of four took place last Saturday in Birmingham.
What a day, after 2 disappointing rounds, this was more like the spirit and support that won SBH the title in 2012 and 2013. The good news was that every event was covered, so particular thanks to the following who stepped in at short or very short notice; ANDREW LAWLER (400m H), TOBY HARRIS (Long jump), MO MOHAMMED (5000m) and last but not least KHALID-ALI AHMED (3000m S/C). A special mention for KHALID who only took up steeplechasing 2 weeks ago and had his first race over 2000m S/C in the YDL last week where he won the race and was keen to volunteer to cover the gap due to the ongoing injury to GLEN WATTS. As we tied for first place, every point these athletes scored was vital.
The sprints saw season debuts from CONFIDENCE LAWSON and TOMMY RAHMDAN who together with the ever present GERALD MATTHEW (with a win in the “B” 200m) gave us excellent points in quality fields. GERALD and TOMMY were then joined by DANIEL LEWIS and ANDREW AMOAH to gain a good 2nd place in the sprint relay. RICHARD MORRISSEY delayed his flight to the Europeans where he’s competing for Ireland, to run in the 400m and collected 3rd place in a very competitive race. Congratulations to MATTHEW PAGAN who stormed through for 2nd place in the “B” 400m.
Our middle distance was impressive. BEN ROCHFORD in his first year as a senior shows increasing maturity in securing 2nd place in the “B” 800m whilst new member JACK CRABTREE marked his BAL debut with a confident 2nd place in the “A” 1500m. Team captain ANTHONY WHITEMAN bounced back from a disappointing run in the 800m to win the “B” 1500m. Our only “A” string victory on the track came from RICHARD HORTON in the 5000m who in a tactical race out sprinted the Liverpool runner over the last 100m.
The windy conditions did not help the jumpers and there was an element of “post trials” syndrome as one jumper put it. However consistency was the watchword, with top 3 placings from DAVID SMITH and ALLAN SMITH in the high jump, from ETHAN WALSH in the pole vault and NATHAN FOX and DANIEL LEWIS in the triple jump. However, there was disappointment in the long jump where European bound DANIEL BRAMBLE aggravated a long standing injury but still managed to collect 2nd place. He must now be considered doubtful for the Championships.
The throws were good for points. ZANE DUQUEMIN and GREG THOMPSON dominated the discus event with a double first for the second match running. The shot saw the season debut for MICHALIS STAMATOGIANNIS who gained a narrow victory over British number one SCOTT LINCOLN, while ZANE DUQUEMIN, still suffering from a wrist injury, got 2nd in the “B”. It was good to have STEVE TURNOCK back from injury in the javelin, which was the last event to finish, and yet he still managed to pull out an excellent final throw to gain 3rd place and secure the equal top position for SBH.
The Club moved up to 4th place whilst the leaders, BIRCHFIELD, cannot be caught. However, another spirited performance in the final match at Allianz Park on SATURDAY 6 AUGUST could secure the runners-up spot. All supporters are welcome as this meeting is a joint match with the UKWAL Premiership Division where our Women are in 5th place with genuine aspirations for a top 3 finish.
