ROBBIE LIGHTOWLER WINS 2 WORLD CHAMPION TITLES – Shaftesbury’s ROBBIE LIGHTOWLER and former St Albans Boys school pupil and Leeds University cross country captain, added 2 more Championship to his ever-growing CV, stormed to victory in the ITU Multisport World Championships held in Penticton, British Columbia, Canada during August.
In his first event – the Sprint Duathlon – 5km run followed by 20km bike and then a further 2.5km he recorded a time of 58mins 32 – placing him first (and World Champion) in his age category 20-24. This was also the 3rd fastest time of the day with over 600 international athletes competing. His training partner – ADAM THORPE – and the strategist behind the win finished just behind ROBBIE taking the 2nd podium position – the pair of them reaching speeds of over 75kmph on some parts of a highly technical and challenging cycle!
In his second event- The Aquathlon – 1000m swim followed by a 5km run he took the lead after 700m of the swim – and none of the 400 competitors were able to catch him on the run. He was crowned World Champion in his age category (and all age category’s) with a total time of 30min 31 secs – including a very impressive 12mins 36 for the open water swim in Okanagan Lake

MEMORABLE MOMENT FROM LONDON 2017

Even if you’re not a fan of mascots, it was hard not to warm to Hero the Hedgehog, who became a symbol of London 2017 with his antics and athleticism. Hero enjoyed many memorable moments but the one that sticks in the mind most is the steeplechase stumble (accidentally on purpose, surely) that led to the most painful landing in track and field history.

PHOTOGRAPHS FROM LONDON 2017 – Many thanks to KENNY GROOM who sent me these photographs taken at the Olympic Park, featuring our own kit carrying team.

Firstly, the scene is set, awaiting the next athletes to enter the stadium

Backstage left to right GEORGE GROOM, RUFUS KENT, BEN WINFIELD, PHOENIX LYON, EMMA TAYLOR, MIA GROOM, LOUISA PITSIALIS, JESSICA HURLEY and EMILIA ECONOMU on standby, ready to enter the stadium

GEORGE GROOM carrying the kit of CONSESLUS KIPRUTO of Kenya who won the gold medal in the 3000m Steeplechase and RUFUS KENT with the kit of STANLEY KEBENEI of the United States who finished in 5th place.
