LONDON WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP 10,000m TRIALS – Took place last Saturday at Parliament Hill, which included many Shaftesbury runners. Congratulations to BETH POTTER who ran away from the field to win the Women’s trial race in a time of (32:04.63) which was just under a second off last year’s personal best time, ranking her as UK No.1 in 2017, and BETH will now look forward the 10,000m heats in London on Saturday 5 August. In the B Race VICTORIA WALKER finished 26th in a personal best (38:51.71).

BETH commented afterwards: “Last year, I felt like I was getting chased down but tonight I was getting stronger and stronger. I wasn’t surprised, I’m running well – my sessions were going great but I hadn’t raced (on the track) since Rio so I didn’t know.
“I’m just going to carry on with what I’m doing (the triathlon training) – it’s working, I’m improving in the tri and in the running, so there’s no point in changing anything at the moment. I run about 30-miles a week less now, I’m only in the mid-50’s but I’m getting my aerobic work from the biking and the pool as well, so my legs are fresh – win-win!
“I came here with no pressure and it was good to have a battle with STEPH – it’s nice to come away with number one this time after finishing twice before. I was smiling and grinning, looking at my coach and thinking ‘this is good!’.”

In the Men’s A race RICHARD HORTON finished 19th in a personal best (29:38.55) his only previous race was back in 2012 (31:10.06), next was PHILLIP CROUT U23 in his first 10,000m race also breaking the 30-minute barrier finishing 25th (29:55.01) and is ranked UK No.4 U23 in 2017, finally JAKE SHELLEY finished 34th in a season’s best (31:18.48). In the B Race KOJO KYEREME V40 finished 6th in a season’s best (30:23.08) ranking his UK No.1 V40 in 2017, D Race MARK PEARCE U23 finished 28th in a season’s best (34:36.41)

LOUGHBOROUGH INTERNATIONAL MEETING – Took place last Sunday in Loughborough. ANTHONY WHITEMAN is now the new World 800m V45 Record holder with his (1:50.52), as his recent run in Solihull had a malfunction with the electronic timing equipment so only hand-times were given. Therefore, ANTHONY held back from filling out the relevant paperwork.

SEB COE’S DOUBLE DOSE OF MUD – The following was published on the Athletics Weekly website recently.

The IAAF president reflects on the racing he used to do as a young athlete, which sometimes included two cross country competitions in one day
SEB says he sometimes did two cross country races in the same day as a teenager. He raced once for his school and then for his club and he believes it gave him a huge physical advantage over rivals although, he adds, “it would not be allowed today”.
The two-time Olympic gold medallist does not particularly endorse the idea, but it did not seem to do him any harm and he remembers: “I used to run 30-40 cross country races a year – very often one on Wednesday and another at the weekend.
“Sometimes I did one on Saturday morning for the school and then Saturday afternoon for the club and you’d never been allowed to do that nowadays.
“I had a massive physical advantage over other athletes who didn’t do cross country.”
The IAAF president adds: “It’s a mental thing too. “If you run 3-5 miles across that kind of terrain in Yorkshire on the side of escarpments in places like Halifax and Batley and Huddersfield and the edges of Sheffield it gave you a massive physical advantage over kids who were not doing cross country.
“If you run cross country as a 16-17-year-old, there’s nothing much that will spook you physically on the track.”
He continues: “I believe with the problems we’ve had in European distance running that it’s not remotely coincidental that we’ve lost a generation of coaches who do not believe cross country is important.

TWO DAYS FOR BRITISH TRIALS – The traditional Friday night at the National championships will not happen this year after a decision to turn the British Athletics Team Trials into a two-day event on Saturday & Sunday 1-2 July.
The old AAA Championships once saw a world 10,000m record by DAVID BEDFORD on the Friday evening at Crystal Palace, but nowadays the 25-lap event has been moved to Parliament Hill in May and the usual wave of heats for events like 100m, 400m and 800m will be incorporated into the two-day programme.

NEW GB TEAM KIT UNVEILED – The Great Britain kit for the “Summer of World Athletics” has been unveiled by British Athletics.

To be worn for the first time by athletes competing at the World Para Athletics Championships and IAAF World Championships in July and August respectively, the new Nike Vapor kits “are designed to enhance overall human potential for speed and at the same time address the specificities of each athlete and event”.
The vests and t-shirts feature the words ‘Great Britain’ in red writing and are mostly white with blue design on the body and shoulders.
The British Athletics logo also appears on the tops, while the blue shorts and leggings feature the British flag.

ALLIANZ PARK TO HOST BEER MILE AGAIN – British miler is training to take down Canadian COREY BELLEMORE’S world record

One of the biggest clashes of the summer is set to take place on August 12 in London. Not at the IAAF World Championships, though, but on the other side of the British capital at ALLIANZ PARK – the venue of the 2017 Beer Mile World Classic.
The crazy combination of athletics and alcohol produces an entertaining cocktail of a competition. It has caught the imagination of the running world in recent years and some of the world’s finest gastric gladiators will be at ALLIANZ PARK on the final weekend of the IAAF World Championships to run, drink and occasionally vomit as they compete for bragging rights in one of the most bizarre – and increasingly popular – off-shoots of track and field.
Yet all eyes will be on two men – COREY BELLEMORE of Canada and DALE CLUTTERBUCK of Britain.
Last year Bellemore coasted to victory in a world record 4:34.35 with Clutterbuck runner-up in a European record of 4:47.39. But Clutterbuck went into the race unprepared at the end of a poor track season. He only found out he was doing the 2016 race a couple of days earlier and he even knocked back a few drinks before the race ‘to warm up’.
This year, however, he is training for the event with fellow international runner BEN COLDRAY. The pair are doing a weekly interval session where their recovery period includes downing a bottle of beer and they have been recording their progress on YouTube.
“People might think this is nuts and I’ve gone mad, but there’s a bigger picture,” says CLUTTERBUCK. “I’d love to qualify for the Commonwealth Games next year and if this helps me get a bit of sponsorship so I can train harder, then it will have been worth it.”
BELLEMORE was signed by Adidas after his beer mile triumph 12 months ago while the previous world record-holder, LEWIS KENT of Canada, earned a similar deal with Brooks.
“Ultimately it’s just a few beers and a bit of fun with a friend, BEN, once a week,” CLUTTERBUCK continues. “It won’t do me any harm and I still plan to be competitive at events like the British Champs this summer.”
While Canada and the United States has dominated the beer mile record books recently, Britain has a good tradition. CHRIS PARR of Gateshead Harriers, for example, was considered almost invincible in the ‘Chunder Mile’ – a more difficult variation of beer miling where proper pints are consumed.
CLUTTERBUCK believes a beer mile in four-and-a-half minutes is roughly equivalent to a sub-four-minute mile in ‘normal athletics’ and he adds: “The sport needs to be livened up. I go to some meetings and they’re pretty boring. The gun goes, you race and that’s it, you go home.

WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP TRIALS – Eight Olympians are set to compete at the event at Parliament Hill, which incorporates the GB IAAF World Championships trials.

BETH POTTER (SBH), JO PAVEY and ANDY VERNON are among the eight Olympians to have been announced for the Highgate Harriers Night of the 10,000m PBs on Saturday May 20.
The event, which is free to spectate and combines top-quality racing with a unique crowd experience, will again incorporate the British 10,000m Championships, with the Parliament Hill track also playing host to those looking to make the GB team for the IAAF World Championships in London this summer.
Five-time Olympian PAVEY features along with reigning British champion JESSICA MARTINSONIA SAMUELS and Portugal’s JESSICA AUGUSTO are in the women’s entry list. In the men’s entries, Rio 2016 Olympian VERNON is joined by ROSS MILLINGTON, who won the GB Olympic trial race at Parliament Hill last year, plus Irish marathoner PAUL POLLOCK.
Others in action are set to be KATE AVERY, the double European cross-country runner-up who was fourth in the 2014 Commonwealth Games and has 31:45.44 PB. She ran 32:11.84 last year but has only raced once since last June. KATRINA WOOTTON has been the leading Briton in her last two 10km races at Brighton and Birmingham and can boast a 31:46 road PB, while ELINOR KIRK, who was ninth in the 2014 Commonwealth Games, has one of the fastest PBs in the field with 32:17.05.
Louise Small, who was first Brit at the World Cross in 39th place, has a 33:50.63 PB and ran 34:01.90 last year, while JENNIFER NESBITT ran 33:45.19 last year and a 74:26 clocking in the Reading Half Marathon suggests she is in good form.
DEWI GRIFFITTHS, who was fifth in the 2016 Europeans, ran a time of 28:16.07 last week, while Luke Caldwell, who has a 28:29.61 PB, was 14th in the 2014 Commonwealth Games. BEN CONNOR ran 29:21.47 for fifth last year but the National cross country champion has greatly improved this winter.
The full current men’s entry list can be found here, while the women’s list is here.
The top two eligible athletes in each World Championships trial race will automatically be selected for the GB team for the event in London this summer, provided they also achieve the qualifying standard of 27:45 for men or 32:15 for women by midnight on July 9.
The volunteer-powered “annual 10,000m festival” at Parliament Hill invites spectators to embrace “#Lane3BeerNCheer”, with refreshments available on the track and fans able to watch the action up close from lane three.
This year’s event will also feature an endurance seminar in among the series of 10,000m races, with IAAF president SEB COE and world marathon record-holder PAULA RADCLIFFE among the speakers, and snooker legend RONNIE O’SULLIVAN, who is a keen runner, acting as host.
The event gets under way with an inter-schools relay at 13:30 before race one at 15:15 through to the men’s GB trial race at 20:15 and the women’s at 21:00. The endurance seminar is scheduled for 18:30.

BE AWARE WHEN BUYING HAYFEVER REMEDIES AND OTHER MEDICATION – The summer sees a number of athletes being affected by hayfever. As with all medication please remember off-the-shelf and over-the-counter remedies may contain PROHIBITED substances.  Make sure you and any athletes you coach know how to check before they buy.
To find out more please see www.britishathletics.org.uk/cleanathletics/check-your-medication.

100%ME CLEAN SPORT APP – Another very useful way to ensure you and athletes you support are fully aware of the latest anti-doping information is to use the 100%me Clean Sport App. This App is available to download via iTunes, Googleplay or the Windows Store and provides athletes, coaches and athlete support personnel with essential information on-the-go to help them participate in doping-free sport.
The App, which can be customised for your sport, provides clear and concise anti-doping advice, guidance and updates to ensure you can be clean and stay clean wherever you are training or competing.

If you need to check your medication, learn more about the risks with supplements, or simply understand more about the testing procedures and your rights as an athlete, the App is the place to start.
UK Anti-Doping (UKAD) ensures the App is always up-to-date and will send out alerts to inform you if anything important has changed. That means if a new substance is added to the WADA Prohibited List or a deadline is approaching for Whereabouts submissions, you will be the first to know.
Other features include the ability to record and store information about your medications for doping control, plus directly access the Report Doping in Sport online form.
More information on this handy App can be found here www.britishathletics.org.uk/cleanathletics/clean-sport-app/

BRITISH ATHLETICS LEAGUE – The first match of the season took place in Sheffield last Saturday.
A cold and blustery day greeted all 8 teams for Round One of the BAL Premiership in Sheffield. SBH were in good spirits even though the team had been weakened by injury, illness, warm weather training and conflicting meetings. The match started well with top class performances in the 400m Hurdles from SEB RODGER and a welcome return from injury by LLOYD HANLEY-BYRON.
The Hammer was always going to be tough with our top 4 throwers either in the US or unavailable, so it was left to JAMES HAMBLIN, making his Premiership debut to fly the flag with a throw just a metre short of his PB. SBH once more dominated the Discus with double wins for ZANE DUQUEMIN and ANGUS MCINROY. While the Javelin saw STEVE TURNOCK maintain his good recent form.
JAMES MCLACHLAN showed a welcome return to form with convincing wins in both the long and triple jumps, ably supported by NONSO OKOLO in the TJ. Another new member, MONTEZ BLAIR, the BUCS champion, was making his debut in the HJ in the trickiest of conditions. This was another event where 4 of our top jumpers were not available, but DAN BRAMBLE stepped in at the last moment and cleared a PB of 1.90m and promised to have a HJ training session as he wants to clear 2m. The PV was equally difficult, where we welcomed new U20 member ROSS HADJIPANAYI who was a late addition to the team.
Endurance was badly hit but nevertheless there were a number of highlights. ANTHONY WHITEMAN running a SB in the 800m which was a British and World V45 age group record. After the race, an excited Anthony was confident that he would get the time down to sub 1.50 in better conditions. MO MOHAMED was another late addition to the team and proved he was back from injury with a PB after 4 years of disappointment. Another welcome return was from GLEN WATTS after the disruptions of becoming a new father with the minimum of training still managed to complete both the 3k chase and the 3k flat where JACK CRABTREE had a fine race for 2nd place.
Unfortunately, it was now that bad luck struck the team. ANDREW LAWLER was running well in the 3k chase when he slipped coming out of the water jump and not only appeared to have broken his ankle but then had his hand spiked by the following runner when he fell. Thanks to the prompt attention of club physio, KYLE ANDREW and his wife LAUREN, who took ANDREW to the A&E Department at the Northern General Hospital, he was eventually diagnosed with badly torn ligaments and had a number of stitches in his hand wound. MO MOHAMED was the next casualty, twisting his ankle whilst warming up for the 1500m and missing the race. Finally, GERALD MATTHEW, after winning the “A” string 200m was running 3rd leg in the 4 x 100m with the team well ahead when he pulled up with a hamstring injury but still managed to hobble the last 10m to hand the baton on to DAN BRAMBLE who brought the team home in 8th place. The team dropped from 3rd to 5th equal but confident that so much bad luck could not strike again and that there will be a much better performance in Round 2 on Saturday 3 June at Lee Valley.

EASTERN YOUNG ATHLETICS LEAGUE – The first match of the season took place in Watford last Sunday.

What an astonishing start to the season with our Young Athletes finishing only 15 points behind last year’s Champions. I believe it would be unfair to single out any Individual, as the turnout and performance was exceptional, which included so many of this Year’s new members.

The next fixture is on 4 June at Luton, where we are up against Basildon, Biggleswade, Havering, Luton, Norwich and Peterborough.

Team Result – 1st Bedford & County (781 points), 2nd SBH (766), 3rd Woodford Green with Essex Ladies (626.5), 4th Watford (622), 5th Braintree (311), 6th Hertford & Ware/Enfield & Haringey (170.5), 7th Biggleswade (167).

WORLD RECORD FOR 2018 VIRGIN MONEY LONDON MARATHON – A record total number of 386,050 applicants from the UK and overseas registered for a ballot place in the 2018 Virgin Money London Marathon when the application system closed on Friday 5 May. This is the highest number of applicants for any marathon in the world.
327,516 of those applicants were from the UK. This is 73,586 up from the previous UK applicant record of 253,930 for the 2017 event – an increase of nearly 29%. A total of 58,534 people applied in the overseas ballot.
Just over 58% of the UK applications for 2018 were from people who have never run a marathon and more than 45% of the total UK applicants were women (also a new record).
“These record-breaking numbers reflect the huge success of the 37th London Marathon on 23 April,” said Hugh Brasher, Event Director for London Marathon Events. “One of our goals is to inspire people to take up sport and it’s fantastic that more than 191,000 people from the UK have been inspired to apply to run a marathon for the first time in 2018.

ATTEMPT AT SUB-2 HOUR MARATHON  At 05:45 local time (04:45 BST) last Saturday, LEILISA DESISA, ZERSENAY TADESE and ELIUD KIPCHOGE stepped on to a famous motor racing track in Italy and attempt to do something that many believe could forever be beyond the scope of human capability.

Their goal has nothing to do with fast cars, however – this will all be about fast feet and the small matter of attempting to run a marathon in under two hours.
It’s undeniable that the odds are currently stacked against success when it comes to this marathon ambition. The hard facts behind what is required to cover 26.2 miles in less than 120 minutes take a while to comprehend.
The current marathon world record stands at 2 hours, 2 minutes and 57 seconds – set by Kenya’s DENNIS KIMETTO at the Berlin Marathon in 2014, his average pace for that run was 4:41 per mile. To run 1:59:59 involves an average pace of approximately 4:35. That would mean an improvement of roughly 2.5 per cent.
Yet Nike were determined to find out if it can be done or, at the very least, how close it is possible to get to the landmark time. They are not the only company to have such an ambition – Adidas have their own designs on being first past this post while there is also the sub2hr project headed by Professor YANNIS PITSILADIS of the University of Brighton and involving KENENISA BEKELE – but the American sportwear giants will be the first to officially have a go. They have used the considerable resources at their disposal to examine every single aspect of what it might take to get the sub-two-hour job done. “The hard facts behind what is required to cover 26.2 miles in less than 120 minutes take a while to comprehend”
There was the recruitment of the athletes they thought best equipped to handle the task at hand. Kenya’s KIPCHOGE, who has a PB of 2:03:05, is also the Olympic champion and arguably the finest marathon runner there has ever been. Ethiopian DESISA is a two-time Boston Marathon winner while Eritrean TADESE is the current world half-marathon record-holder with a time of 58:23.
Their training, nutrition and recovery patterns have been pored over forensically with the aim of squeezing every drop of a performance out of them. The involvement of pacemakers, drafting and energy conservation will play a hugely significant part, too. And then there are the shoes. Many would argue this is the whole reason why Nike got involved in the first place – as a publicity stunt designed to shift more products.
The marathon course at Monza, not far from Milan, is very much out of the ordinary, too. The runners will cover just over 17.5 laps of a 2.4km circuit which has also been designed to maximise speed – the appliance of science is everywhere. And it’s that contrived nature of such an experiment which concerns the more sceptical observers.
“It’s got positive elements and negative elements,” says Athletics Weekly columnist Tim Hutchings, former Olympian and a man immersed in world distance running through his job as an athletics commentator. “I think all top athletes train hard to achieve a permanence in competition and win titles, win medals and break records. “Competition is the unifying element I think of all sport, particularly in athletics and distance racing. When that unifying, element gets compromised by commercial ambition or a third party’s infatuation with an alternative goal, like the sub-2, then it’s quite regrettable.”
Hutchings adds: “The whole thing in Monza is very contrived. This is not a legitimate record attempt for a number of reasons – it’s just a scientific experiment. It’s too plastic, it’s not real.” There is no doubt that going under two hours splits opinion massively. For every sceptic, there is someone absolutely fascinated by this particular pursuit and wondering just where it might lead.

SUB-2 HOUR MARATHON OUTCOME  Showing remarkable strength both in body and mind, ELIUD KIPCHOGE proved on Saturday morning that a sub-two-hour marathon might be a lot closer than some may have originally thought.

Clocking 2:00:25 for 26.2 miles in a controversial ‘Breaking2’ event organised by sportswear giant Nike in an attempt to breach the barrier, the Olympic champion further reinforced his position as arguably the finest marathon runner of all time.
While Kipchoge’s time, set on a Formula One track in Monza in Italy, won’t count as an official world record, it does go some way to further proving what the human body is capable of.

Starting out toward the back of an arrow formation of pacers, KIPCHOGE was joined by world half-marathon record-holder TADESE and two-time Boston Marathon winner DESISA.
Their first 5km split was timed at 14:14 as they aimed for 14:10, but the group picked up the pace soon afterwards and there was a projected finish time of 1:59:56 at that point.
They went through 10km in 28:21, 15km in 42:34 and 20km in 56:49, before the halfway point was reached in 59:57. Not long after this, the attempt relied on KIPCHOGE alone, with DESISA having dropped off the pace just after 15km and TADESE losing touch after 21km.
KIPCHOGE and the pacers remained on track for a sub-two-hour time through 25km in 71:03, and with 85:20 on the clock at 30km the projected finish time was exactly 2:00:00. The 35km mark was passed in 1:39:37 and 40km in 1:54:04.
KIPCHOGE averaged around 4:36 per mile, with around 4:34.5 needed to dip under two hours.
Both TADESE and DESISA battled on to finish, clocking 2:06:51 and 2:14:10 respectively.
