YOUNG ATHLETES IN THE SPOTLIGHT AT NIGHT OF THE 10000m PBs  The following article was published on the Athletics Weekly website recently. Photograph taken by MARK SHEARMAN.

Popular event at Parliament Hill in London will feature 800m races for under-17 and under-20 runners this year. Teenage middle-distance runners will get the chance to shine at the Night of the 10,000m PBs in 2023 with the event adding some junior 800m races into its programme on 20 May in London. “The goal is to use the Night of the 10,000m PBs platform to help youngsters run faster and get experience of racing at bigger events with crowds,” says event director BEN POCHEE. “This year we will host four 800m races for under-20 and under-17 men and women and these races will take place just before our championship events when the crowds and atmosphere really start to bubble up to the boil.” It is not simply the chance to race in big crowds in amid a super atmosphere, though. The athletes will be targeting qualifying times for the European Under-20 Championships in Jerusalem from August 7-10 and the Commonwealth Youth Games in Trinidad & Tobago on August 4-11.

To help them hit the times, they will benefit from WaveLight pacing lights too. More generally the 2023 meeting is partnering with On Track Nights and has World Athletics Silver status. Young athletes’ races aside, it features the British Championships and World Championships trials for 10,000m with a total of £30,000 in prize money up for grabs.

POCHEE adds: “My aim is to up the ante further with fun, entertainment and wild revelry that our event has become renowned. Our event atmosphere has clearly aided performances in the past and I want our next generation to tangibly benefit too.” The event is an invitational, so no entry fees are needed but qualifying standards apply and expressions of interest are to be received by April 23 by emailing nightofthe10000mpbs@gmail.com.  Standards for the 800m races are: under-17 men (sub-1:56) and women (sub-2:12) and under-20 men (sub-1:52) and women (sub-2:10). Qualifying times for the European Under-20 Championships are (1:49.0) and (2:06.0) and for the Commonwealth Youth Games they are (for English athletes) (1:51.0) and (2:08.0). The Emsley Carr and Millicent Fawcett Mile races, however, are moving north. Last year they were held at the Night of the 10,000m PBs event but on 27 May they will be staged at the British Milers’ Club Grand Prix in Manchester.

WORLD ATHLETICS TO EXCLUDE TRANSGENDER WOMEN FROM FEMALE EVENTS  The following article was published on the Athletics Weekly website recently.

Global governing body’s president SEB COE says his council is “guided by over-arching principle to protect the female category”. World Athletics has decided to exclude transgender women who have gone through male puberty from female events. In a strong move which will be applauded by female athletes around the planet, the governing body’s president SEB COE said that following a review earlier this year “there is insufficient evidence that trans women do not retain advantages over biological women”. The ban will begin on 31 March and COE said: “The council agreed it must be guided by our over-arching principle which is to protect the female category.”

COE added a working group will be established to do further research in transgender eligibility guidelines with a remit to “consult specifically with transgender athletes to seek views on competing in athletics”. For DSD (Differences of Sexual Development) athletes, new regulations will require any relevant athletes to reduce their testosterone levels below a limit of 2.5nmol/L for a minimum of 24 months (or six months for currently competing DSD athletes) to compete internationally in the female category in any event, not just the events that were restricted (400m to one mile) under the previous regulations. This means the principle of restricted events has been removed from the regulations and the likelihood is that we will see fewer – if any – DSD athletes winning medals at major championships in future. Certainly, they will not be able to compete at this summer’s World Championships in Budapest for starters. “We have been prepared to take these issues head on,” said COE. “In the past they would have been allowed to drift or be kicked into the long grass. That is not the nature of my leadership and it is certainly not the instincts of my council.”

A World Athletics statement added: “In terms of DSD regulations, World Athletics has more than 10 years of research and evidence of the physical advantages that these athletes bring to the female category. “However, there are currently no transgender athletes competing internationally in athletics and consequently no athletics-specific evidence of the impact these athletes would have on the fairness of female competition in athletics. “In these circumstances, the Council decided to prioritise fairness and the integrity of the female competition before inclusion.” The ban is specifically for “female World Rankings competition”, which raises the question of whether the ruling will be enforced in grassroots competitions such as club-level events like road relays or fell races.

COE added: “Decisions are always difficult when they involve conflicting needs and rights between different groups, but we continue to take the view that we must maintain fairness for female athletes above all other considerations. “We will be guided in this by the science around physical performance and male advantage which will inevitably develop over the coming years. As more evidence becomes available, we will review our position, but we believe the integrity of the female category in athletics is paramount.” Reacting to the news, UK Athletics said they are “fully considering the details of the World Athletics statement on transgender and DSD participation in athletics and its implications for competition in the UK, but in principle we support and welcome the direction they have taken in protecting the female category”. UKA added: “This direction reflects the submission made by UKA to World Athletics earlier this year. At the same time, we remain committed to continuing to work alongside the Home Country Athletics Federations and our Transgender Project Group to maintain the inclusivity of our sport and ensure that transgender women are able to continue to compete whilst respecting these rules.”

Russian ban lifted but nation remains suspended due to war  The seven-year suspension of the Russian athletics federation (RusAF) due to its breaking of anti-doping rules has been lifted. But the nation’s athletes, coaches and officials, plus those in Belarus, remain barred from international athletics due to the invasion and ongoing war in Ukraine. COE said the ban would be for “the foreseeable future” and that the nation must comply with 35 special conditions that aim to maintain the anti-doping reforms. COE praised the “Herculean work” of RUNE ANDERSEN and the Taskforce members “for staying the course and helping us to resolve a major integrity issue in our sport”. He added: “It has been a mammoth undertaking over seven years but their commitment and diligence has given the Council confidence that the Russian Federation has reformed its structure and culture and is now on the right path in terms of addressing doping issues. It is important that RusAF continues on this path, but we are confident the Athletics Integrity Unit has the expertise to monitor and assess the situation going forwards.”

CURRENT DISTRIBUTION OF SHAFTESBURY INFORMATION Currently I notify members (by email) using “MailChimp”. The reason I changed, was in November 2017 “Gmail” put a limit of 100 addresses that users could send to in a 24-hour period, and currently I send to approximately 850 members each issue.

On seeking technical advice “MailChimp” was recommended as the best way for SBH to go forward. There is one thing you should be aware off is that when you receive an email from me, the footer at the bottom has 4 options, of which one is “Unsubscribe Me From List”. Could I ask you not to select this as if you do you will be automatically removed from my distribution list.

HARSH NEW RULES FOR TRACK AND TRAINING VENUES  The following article was published on the Athletics Weekly website recently.

Coaches are facing the pinch due to soaring prices relating to the use of facilities. For years coaches and athletes have taken it for granted that there will be tracks to train on, pits to jump into and designated, safe throwing areas to throw in. Now, however, that idea is very much under threat. It seems that athletics tracks up and down the country are changing their usage policies. Our facilities may not be “facilitating” our sport any more. In fact, some of the changes could completely change the way coaches coach – and may even drive some away entirely. The track I coach at has recently decided to turn its athletics usage model on its head. In the kind of set-up which is echoed throughout this country, it used to be the case that I could simply turn up with my athletes and coach. The members of my training group would just pay at the door and we would get on with our session. The new system, however, has changed all of that. It is now impossible for a shot putter, hurdler or triple jumper – in fact any event apart from sprinting, middle and long distances – to use this particular track without a coach being present and an advance booking being made. Even then, the “runners” may turn up at the track to find it booked out for other events. My local facility is far from alone in doing this, either.

The changes afoot Let me explain what’s happening in a little more detail. At the facility I use, coaches will now only be allowed to use it if they pre-book all of their training slots. At first glance, this may not appear to be that onerous a problem – after all, we had to do this in response to Covid when space was being controlled. However, the difference now is that coaches will be invoiced monthly for their sessions. There’s a sizeable fee for using a lane, the long jump pit, the pole vault and so on.  We are also supposed to know the exact times and precisely which facilities we wish to use months in advance. On top of that, the centre has informed us they need 28 days’ notice for a change of times and dates, something which represents an extraordinarily difficult challenge in a sport where things change all the time.  The centre I coach from has also required coaches to re-submit their coaching documents, download and supply the British Athletics insurance policy, child protection policy and complete risk assessments. We have also had to identify which events we can coach. Was an explanation given as to exactly why this information was required again? No. There is an insistence that the centre is not doing this for financial reasons, but rather it seems these changes may actually be for insurance purposes. I guess ensuring the coach is more liable for the session would reduce the premium and the claim would be against British Athletics’ insurance in the first place.  I have not been given a direct explanation for the changes, however, which does leave room for speculation. If it is about making money, that’s not unreasonable in these difficult times, but should coaches – who are amateur more often than not – be made to fork out?  Some quick calculations indicate that, under this strategy, many coaches will face monthly bills ranging from £500 to over £1000. Where will they find that additional money? This, potentially, has huge ramifications for the sport.

Opening the door to non-athletics use With a pressing need to increase revenue, many centres up and down the country use their athletics facilities for non-athletic activities. Indoor arenas can play host to children’s birthday parties, gymnastics, trampolining, cheerleading, meetings, gatherings and so on. For outdoor tracks, football and other field sports can cause complications. It’s therefore not surprising that many coaches and athletes feel their sport is being squeezed out. On another level some tracks charge additional fees to use facilities such as the long jump pit, as staff are required to move the covers. It certainly makes you think that “things ain’t easy any more”…

JOAQUIM CRUZ AT 60  The following article was published on the Athletics Weekly website recently. Photograph taken by MARK SHEARMAN.

Olympic 800m champion in 1984 turns 60 this weekend and we look back on the career of one of the all-time greats. JOAQUIM CRUZ is best known for beating SEB COE to the 1984 Olympic 800m title in Los Angeles. For many in South America there was also a decent argument to describe him as the world record-holder too. COE ran (1:41.73) in Florence in 1981 at an event where the photo-finish equipment malfunctioned. The Briton’s time was calculated from three photo-cells positioned at three different heights at the finish and officials hand-timed his run at (1:41.6), (1:41.6) and (1:41.7). The world record stood until 1997, when WILSON KIPKETER broke the mark. But in Cologne in 1984 – just 20 days after his Olympic victory – CRUZ ran (1:41.77) to miss COE’S mildly controversial mark by a mere four hundredths of a second. That statistical story is one of many embedded into the folklore of middle-distance running in the 1980s. It was a golden period, largely dominated by COE and fellow Englishmen STEVE OVETT, STEVE CRAM and PETER ELLIOTT, but there were a number of athletes from around the world who were just as good on their day. Most notably, for example, SAID AOUITA of Morocco and, of course, CRUZ.

Humble beginnings CRUZ turns 60 this week (March 12) but the athlete (whose first name is pronounced JOE-AKEEM not WAH-KEEM incidentally) was born in 1963 in a favela in Taguatinga near Brasilia. To begin with he was a talented basketball player and his athletics talent was spotted when playing that game by a coach called LUIZ DE OLIVIERA.

Initially CRUZ was a reluctant runner who preferred basketball, but he had stacks of natural running ability. He clocked a world junior 800m record of (1:44.3) in Rio in 1981 and moved to Eugene, Oregon, to train. Injuries held him up a little and it was discovered his right leg was slightly shorter than the left, which needed an orthotic to fix. But in 1983, aged just 21, he made his mark at the World Championships in Helsinki by finishing third behind winner WILLI WULBECK of West Germany. With an aggressive front running style that would become his trademark, he battled for the lead with ELLIOTT at a furious pace before running out of steam as the more experienced WULBECK charged through for gold.

Glory in Los Angeles One year later CRUZ was virtually invincible over two laps. He began the summer by winning the NCAA 800m and 1500m titles, plus a (3:53.00) mile in his debut at the distance at the Pepsi Invitational. Then at the Olympics in LA itself he ran a remarkable series of races with (1:45.66) in his heat, (1:44.84) in the second round, (1:43.84) in his semi and (1:43.00) in the final – all in successive days. Three years earlier an 18-year-old CRUZ had finished well behind COE as the Briton destroyed the field to win the IAAF World Cup 800m in Rome. But now, in LA and aged 21, he was always in control and surged clear of COE and runner-up EARL JONES and the rest of the field in the home straight to win with ease.“We’re too old to be playing with fire,” the runner-up COE famously told OVETT. However while COE went on to successfully defend his 1500m title, CRUZ withdrew from the metric mile with a cold. Back in Europe a few days later, though, CRUZ scorched to some great end-of-season victories with (2:14.09) for 1000m in Nice, (1:42.34) for 800m in Zurich, (1:42.41) in Brussels and then (1:44.77) in Cologne. Such was his status back home now, in Sao Paulo an abandoned baby was left on someone’s doorstep and it was named JOAQUIM CRUZ.

Post-Los Angeles CRUZ was never quite the same after his impeccable 1984 season. In early 1985 he was humbled in an early season 1500m showdown in Nice where CRAM narrowly held off AOUITA in a world record of (3:29.67) as CRUZ lost contact approaching the bell and faded to seventh in (3:37.10). At his specialist distance, though, he still ran brilliantly by beating TOM MCKEAN at Crystal Palace, whereas he also enjoyed victories in (1:42.49) in Koblenz, (1:42.54) in Cologne and (1:42.98) in Berlin, plus a narrow defeat to an in-form CRAM in (1:43.23) in Zurich. The 1986 season was lost through injury and with his career seemingly on the slide the Brazilian whipped himself into great shape again for a defence of his Olympic title in Seoul in 1988 and managed to put up a gallant fight that nearly resulted in gold. On the eve of the Games in August he ran a 1500m PB of (3:34.63) to win in Hengelo and finished a close runner-up to AOUITA in Cologne over 800m in (1:44.27). Ultimately the title in Seoul went to surprise package PAUL ERENG as the Kenyan burst past CRUZ in the closing metres to claim victory as the Brazilian ran (1:43.90) ahead of AOUITA, ELLIOTT, JOHNNY GRAY and fellow Brazilian JOSE-LUIS BARBOSA.

CRUZ carried on racing until 1997 but was only eighth in his 1500m heat at the 1996 Olympics and, in recent years, he has been based in San Diego as a coach primarily for the United States Paralympics programme where he has continued to inspire modern-day athletes in addition to older ex-athletes and fans who remember him as one of the most graceful and powerful 800m runners of all time.

IT’S NOT ALL ABOUT MEDALS  The following article was published on the Athletics Weekly website recently. Photograph of CHRIS THOMPSON taken by MARK SHEARMAN

UK Athletics want to select smaller teams for global championships but their policy flies in the face of popular opinion. About 20 years ago I knew an ambitious British runner whose main goal was to run in the World Cross Country Championships. He realised the ceiling of his talent was to squeeze into the squad and after years of gruelling training he eventually managed it in his early 30s by qualifying for a couple of global events. Ultimately he finished outside the top 60 and several minutes behind the winner, but he achieved his dream and is now able to tell his grandchildren that he ran for Great Britain at the World Cross. As my friend and many other proud international athletes over the years will agree, these championships are not all about winning medals.

The problem is, the medals mentality is dominating UK Athletics’ selection strategy right now. JACK BUCKNER, the governing body’s new chief executive, said recently: “There will be a bit of a shift in our selection philosophy which is going to be quite hard in some ways. We will be moving towards a philosophy more about performance. It will have a slightly sharper edge. You need to really focus on the big hitters. We could have a list of six to 10 names and we need to be all over them. We need to identify where the medals are coming from and have the right resources in place.” BUCKNER has made a positive start to his role at UKA but in this case he appears to have misjudged the mood of the people. An AW poll this week asked if UKA should send smaller elite teams of probable finalists and potential medallists to global championships? Or should they field as big a squad as possible to maximise development opportunities? At last count 72% want squads that are “as big as possible” with only 3% preferring “small select squads” and 25% choosing “somewhere in between”. Athletes and fans have gone further than a mere click of the keyboard to vote too. Some have taken to social media to voice their concern. Established GB internationals claim the policy is driven by UKA’s cash-strapped position – although the governing body denies this – whereas others have made jibes about the number of support staff soon out-numbering the actual competitors.

KATHERINE MERRY went to the 1993 World Championships as a teenager before going on to win Olympic 400m bronze in Sydney seven years later. She says she would not qualify for that World Champs with the current selection policy and adds: “Not every athlete can be a medallist or top eight at a Champs, but all deserve to showcase their best on the biggest stage they can. This is why athletes train. To be the best they can be and reach the highest possible level with their talent.” What would MO FARAH have achieved during his 2011-2017 heyday if he hadn’t endured the stinging experience of being knocked out of the 5000m heats at the 2008 Olympics? KATARINA JOHNSON-THOMPSON finished 14th in the Olympic heptathlon – a long way behind winner JESS ENNIS – in London in 2012 but the experience put her in good stead to win a world title seven years later in Doha. At the same home Games, meanwhile, a young runner called EILISH MCCOLGAN finished a distant ninth in her 3000m steeplechase heat but look what she’s gone on to achieve. There are plenty more examples like this too.

What is exasperating about UKA’s selection stance is that it see-saws from one extreme to another. Less than two years ago, for example, BUCKNER’S predecessor JO COATES unleashed a plan entitled ‘age of the athlete’ where one of the targets was to have athletes representing Great Britain and Northern Ireland in every single track and field event at major championships by 2032. This ambitious but very worthy goal was not original either as UKA proposed the same idea at the turn of the millennium. It is also only six years since UKA launched a campaign with the hashtag “#represent” which was devised by a creative agency – probably at considerable cost – and primarily promoted the beauty and honour of competing for your country. In the run-up to London 2012, however, the GB team adopted a tougher selection strategy similar to the one BUCKNER is now suggesting will happen on the road to the Paris 2024 Olympics. CHARLES VAN COMMENEE, the GB head coach at the time, famously said that “nobody is going to jump higher by lowering the bar”.  VAN COMMENEE added: “When you raise the standards, you will have a more successful team and success breeds success. When you are in a championship and in the first two days you’ve got a dozen going out in the first round then that doesn’t set the right tone for the rest of the team and for the people watching us.”

With reference to under-performing “championship tourists”, he continued: “I think at major championships you shouldn’t fail, so I don’t want to send people with a high probability of failure.” There is definitely some logic in that approach and it is important to add that UKA’s strict selection strategies only apply to global championships. Events like the Commonwealth Games, age-group championships and of course this month’s European Indoor Championships are always regarded as development opportunities for up-and-coming athletes. Since the days of VAN COMMENEE, the selection strategy now appears to be coming around in full circle and looks set to be repeated. Is it what athletes and fans want, though? Clearly not.

Surely UKA is underestimating the sheer achievement of making a national team for a major championship. If ever you need to be reminded of this, just remember the scenes of joy and emotion two years ago when CHRIS THOMPSON won the Olympic marathon trials in Kew Gardens. THOMMO probably realised he would not win Olympic medal in Japan. Making the top 10 would be a long shot – and he ultimately finished first Brit home in 39th. But, really, who cares? What mattered is that he earned the right to stand on the same start line as ELIUD KIPCHOGE at the greatest show on earth and is part of an exclusive club of super-athletes who go by the name of “Olympian”.

Mexico 1968 gold medallist who revolutionised his event by inventing the ‘FOSBURY flop’ passed away from cancer just days after turning 76. One of the most iconic figures in track and field athletics, DICK FOSBURY, died on Sunday aged 76 from cancer. The American popularised a backwards ‘flop’ technique and won Olympic gold at the Mexico Games in 1968. His innovative method and achievements went beyond his sport and captured the imagination of the general public. Before FOSBURY, athletes used the Western roll or straddle techniques with the torso going over the bar sideways or belly-down. But Fosbury leapt over the bar backwards – a technique that gave his body a lower centre of mass than other techniques.  FOSBURY was always quick to point out that he was not the first to jump backwards as DEBBIE BRILL, a Canadian who won Commonwealth Games titles in 1970 and 1982, was also using the technique, which was dubbed the ‘BRILL bend’, at an early stage. But FOSBURY said: “I was just blessed to be the first one to discover it and have success with it at this high level. So I got naming rights, something I am very proud of.” Jumping in an age where athletes competed more for love than money, he once said that the flop technique “brought me gifts – not necessarily monetarily … but I have met presidents and kings, seen the world, shared my life with wonderful people. It opened doors and allowed people to perceive me in a positive light.”

Born on March 6, 1947, in Portland, Oregon, FOSBURY showed talent from an early age. In an interview with STUART WEIR for AW a few years ago, FOSBURY recalled his introduction to athletics at school: “In track and field our teacher had us try every event so I ran, I threw and I jumped. And he taught me to high jump using the Western roll where the jumper ran at the bar with a straight approach and aimed their arm and leg at the bar to go over belly first and land in the pit – which was the standard technique at the time. “The other technique that he taught us was the scissors, where you run at the bar and clear the bar with your seat while your legs did a scissor kick over it. For me this was a simple technique. And of course in those days you were landing in sawdust or wood chip, which was a technological advance on sand. So the landing was as important as clearing the bar so that you survived the jump! “As things improved, wood chip was a good environment for us to land in. All the schools had sawdust pits then the new environment was with foam and that is what really opened it up, because we were jumping into a safer environment.” Fosbury was using the scissors technique and felt comfortable with it but his coach explained that the technique was too limiting, so he would have to change in order to progress. Fortunately his change of technique coincided with the introduction of softer landing mats. “I tried the straddle technique and the belly roll technique but had very poor results,” said Fosbury. “So I asked my coach if I could go back to the scissors. He said, ‘don’t quit yet but it is your decision’. So I decided to go back to scissors and at age 16 (in 1963) I jumped a personal best height of (1.65m). Then they raised the bar and I knew I had to try something different to get over it. “I knew I had to lift my hips up and to do that I needed to get my shoulders back out of the way. And I cleared the bar at the next height, eventually jumping (1.77m) so I improved by 15cm that day. “In that competition I changed my position from sitting on the bar to lying flat and going over on my back – upside down from everyone else. The change made me competitive and I finished fourth in the meet. “For the next two years I would lead with my shoulders and was going over the bar at a slight angle. All the time I was doing it by feel as there was no model to follow. I was creating it as I went. In my second year (senior year in high school) I had turned my back to the bar and arched over the bar to fall into the pit. And by then by 1965 the flop had arrived.”

FOSBURY was studying for a civil engineering degree at Oregon State University and the 1968 Olympics initially weren’t really in his thoughts. “I had no ambitions because the Olympics seemed so far away and such a high level of competition that I never imagined reaching it,” he said. “I did not have that Olympic dream until 1968 when my training began to produce better results.” He went to regional trials and USA nationals and was selected for the Mexico Olympics. Once there he jumped (2.24m) to win gold from team-mate ED CARUTHERS, with Russians third and fourth. Having won the gold and broken the American record, FOSBURY asked for the bar to be raised to (2.29m), hoping to break VALERIY BRUMEL’S five-year-old world record of (2.28m). However, none of his attempts at (2.29m) came close.

Reports at the time suggest that while coaches were appalled at his unorthodox approach, the crowd was captivated. FOSBURY’S analysis of the 1968 Olympics is that there were better jumpers in the competition but that his technique gave him a definite advantage. With hindsight, he added: “No one realised what the advantage would be. But, as history has proved, this was a better technique.” Fosbury never set out to change the sport. He just found a technique that worked for him. “I have had the blessing and good fortune to have made a contribution to the sport but I did not set out to do this,” he said. “I was not trying to change the event. I knew that my technique was my path to success. And I had this technique which was mine – mine alone – and I thought that someday someone would use it. But who knew whether it would be two or three high jumpers or 200. The criticism of other coaches did not really matter as long as I was meeting the rules and reaching the standards.”

In the 1972 Olympics, four years later, 28 of the 40 competitors used FOSBURY’S technique, although gold medallist Jüri Tarmak used the straddle. FOSBURY failed to make the US team for the 1972 Olympics and his career was effectively over. But having proved to the world that his technique worked, he had arguably achieved his goal. In later life he served on the board of the World Olympians Association and was involved in local politics in the United States too. In 2008 FOSBURY was diagnosed with stage one lymphoma and he had surgery the following month to remove a cancerous tumour on his lower vertebra. He survived for a further 15 years but on Monday (March 13) his former agent RAY SCHULTE announced FOSBURY’S death the previous day after a short bout with a recurrence of lymphoma. SCHULTE said: “It is with a very heavy heart I have to release the news that longtime friend and client DICK FOSBURY passed away peacefully in his sleep early Sunday morning after a short bout with a recurrence of lymphoma. “DICK will be greatly missed by friends and fans from around the world. A true legend, and friend of all!”

1500m – SW H3 ELLIE BAKER 2nd (4:10.65), in the Final ELLIE finished 11th (4:10.96)

This is the report from the Athletics Weekly website – BAKER’S hopes going into the Euro Indoors were high after she made history at the UKA Indoor Championships (February 19) by breaking ZOLA BUDD’S 1500m championship record from 1986. “The word I would use is confused,” BAKER added. “As I felt in really good shape and the last few weeks has gone well in training, I felt strong but today I had no legs and from the start I was struggling so it was confusing when you think you’re in a good place but you’re not feeling like that in a race. “We’ll go back to the drawing board and go again. I was a bit gutted when I could feel them going away from me as I came here wanting to medal and get that for the team, but when I felt it coming away from me I knew my legs were gone and lost my stride a bit towards the end. It’s one of those things… I will come back stronger and it adds more fuel to the fire! “I’ve taken a lot of things from this season and I feel like I’m in a good place. I have run a PB and I am in a good place but I just want to be more competitive in these championships.”

BETH POTTER WINS OPENING RACE OF THE WORLD TRIATHLON CHAMPIONSHIP SERIES  The first race of the series took place on the 3-4 March at Abu Dhabi.
BETH POTTER won the sprint race in a time of (57:56) ahead of fellow Brit SOPHIE CALDWELL (58.14) and TAYLOR SPIVEY of the USA third (58.27).

The SwimGiven the 24.2C water temperature, there were no wetsuits in sight as the athletes lined up on the pontoon and it was COLDWELL that got off to the best start and was quickly leading the swim pack. Despite the short swim distance, the front pack managed to create a small gap, with Brazil’s VITTORIA LOPES hot on COLDWELL’S feet, RAPPAPORT was well placed in third and was joined by LENA MEILSNER of Germany, SPIVEY and POTTERCOLDWELL emerged from the swim first but was hit with a 10sec time penalty for entering the water too early at the start. She was followed out the water by RAPPAPORT, MEILSNER, SPIVEY, LOPES and POTTER.

What happened on the bikeThat time penalty wasn’t too damaging for COLDWELL, however, and she was quickly out on the bike working together with that lead pack. One thing that did change, however, is that those two chase packs had come together, leaving a group of several dozen women bunched up together. What’s more, they had lost a few more seconds on the leaders come the end of the lap. And that gap continued to grow over the next two laps, with the gap to that huge group up to 47secs. The six leaders all came through transition together and emerged as a group, too. As they headed out on the run the chase pack came into view, arriving into transition some 44secs back.

What happened on the runOut on the run, LOPES quickly dropped off that lead pack, but the remaining five women stuck together, with RAPPAPORT and then POTTER leading from the front. As the first aid station came into view POTTER went on the attack, ignoring any hydration and picking up the pace. The result? For the first time today that lead pack started to stretch out, with fellow Brit staying within touching distance and the other three women dropping back. By the end of the first run lap, POTTER and COLDWELL crossed the line together, with SPIVEY and RAPPAPORT following 10secs behind. Further back there were no significant gains from the chasing group of athletes, with TAYLOR-BROWN finishing the first lap roughly a minute behind the leaders. As the race entered its final stages POTTER made another move and this time COLDWELL wasn’t able to respond. POTTER ended up crossing the line some 18secs ahead of her fellow Brit, with SPIVEY finishing an extra 13secs back.

Quotes from the women’s 2023 WTCS Abu Dhabi raceSpeaking just after crossing the finish line, POTTER said: “It’s always a bit of an unknown, the first race of the season, but I feel like I’ve been doing well in training and JONNY BROWNLEE text me this morning and said ‘you’re going to win’. I didn’t quite believe it. I was like, yeah, yeah, I’ll just do my best! “I’ve been working really hard, not only on the physical side, but also mental. I feel much more positive, calm and relaxed going into racing, and just more aggressive.”

MODERN OLYMPICS EVOLVED FROM ANCIENT GREEK GAMES  The following article was published on the Athletics Weekly website recently.
The modern Olympics, which is a major international sporting event held every four years since it was first established in 1896, has its roots in the ancient Olympic Games that were held in Olympia, Greece.

The role of technology in shaping Olympic events across history  From the introduction of timing devices to track athletes’ performance, over the use of advanced materials for equipment and apparel, to Olympic-inspired games that you can find at casinos at Casinowings.com, technology has been instrumental in pushing boundaries and enhancing the popularity of the sports. In recent years, technological advancements have allowed for more accurate measurements and data collection during competitions. This has enabled coaches and trainers to better understand their athletes’ performance and make adjustments accordingly. Technology has also helped improve safety standards. For example, helmets are now designed with shock-absorbing materials that can reduce the risk of head trauma during contact sports such as football or rugby.

From ZEUS to PIERRE DE COUBERTIN  The ancient games were dedicated to the Greek god ZEUS and featured various athletic competitions and religious ceremonies. They began around 776 BC and lasted for more than 1000 years until 393 AD when they were abolished by Emperor THEODOSIUS I of Rome as part of his effort to suppress pagan cults. Although the original games had no set schedule or events, some of them included running races, boxing matches and chariot racing – all of which can still be seen today at the modern Olympics. Over time, other sports such as wrestling, pentathlon (a five-event competition), horseback riding and javelin throwing were added to the list of events. Eventually the modern Olympic Games were created by PIERRE DE COUBERTIN in order to revive these ancient traditions with an emphasis on peace and international goodwill between athletes from different nations.

Gender in Olympic history: Women’s participation over time  The first female athlete to compete in the modern Olympics was CHARLOTTE COOPER, who won gold in tennis at the 1900 Paris Games. However, it wasn’t until 1928 that women were allowed to participate in track and field events. Since then, women have made great strides in Olympic history. In 2012, for example, every participating nation sent female athletes to compete for the first time ever. This marked a major milestone for gender equality in sports. Today, women make up nearly half of all Olympic participants and are represented across all disciplines from swimming to weightlifting.

The most iconic moments in Olympic history  From JESSE OWEN’S four gold medals at the 1936 Berlin Olympics to NADIA COMANECI’S perfect 10 at the 1976 Montreal Olympics, these moments are forever etched into people’s memories. At the 1972 Munich Olympics, American swimmer MARL SPITZ won seven gold medals in a single Games – a feat that has yet to be matched by any other athlete. In 1980, ERIC HEIDEN became the first person to win five individual gold medals in one Winter Olympics when he dominated speed skating events at Lake Placid. And who can forget about MICHAEL PHELPS’ record-breaking eight gold medals at Beijing 2008?

RICH HISTORY OF THE ISLE OF MAN FESTIVAL OF RUNNING  The following article was published on the Athletics Weekly website recently.

Runners will descend on the island later this month to challenge course records held by athletes such as JONNY MELLOR, ROSIE SMITH and JAMES WALSH. The 59th Isle of Man Easter Festival of Running will fire into life in just a few weeks’ time and the anticipation is already building. This famous annual event, currently supported by IQEQ, has grown from lowly beginnings into one of the best and most anticipated events on the running calendar. This year’s Festival follows the same format that has proved to be such a great success since 2006, and as usual offers a generous prize fund in the region of £5000, with special bonuses for athletes breaking any of the course records. What has set the Easter Festival apart from other athletics events on the Isle of Man since the early 1970s is the invasion of visiting runners which continues to this day. For 50 years and more the Festival has proved to be a magnet for university running teams from all corners of the British Isles, and the traditions of the annual trip to the Isle of Man have been passed down through generations of student athletes. Many have continued to visit each year as alumni members of student teams. Plenty of visiting club teams have contested the Festival over the years too, and some truly great names of the sport have graced the event over the decades – including several Olympians. The opening Quine & Cubbon 10km road race takes place on the evening of Good Friday April 7, starting and finishing on Port Erin Promenade. The race begins at 6.45pm, with men and women running together. It follows a scenic route which includes part of the spectacular coastal footpath from Gansey to Port St Mary.

On Easter Saturday afternoon the Full Factory Winnerswear Peel Hill races take place, with the men going first over a distance of approximately 3.7 miles at 2.15pm. They are followed an hour later at 3.15pm by the women over a course of around 2.7 miles. The atmosphere on the hill is always fantastic and the views spectacular, with the visiting student teams providing masses of colour, noise and fun. The racing concludes on Easter Sunday morning with the Outback 5km road races on Douglas Promenade walkway, with the women leading the way at 10.30am and the men’s race following at 11.15am. The prize presentation and party takes place in the Outback Sports Bar on Sunday evening with doors opening at 7pm, and is strictly ticket-only.

Both the 10km and 5km races have course measurement certificates in place, and so are valid for ranking and record purposes. The current course records are (30:16) JONNY MELLOR, 2007 and (34:18) ROSIE SMITH, 2012 for the 10km, (20:10) JAMES WALSH, 2007 and (16:38) RACHAEL FRANKLIN, 2019 for the Peel Hill Race and (14:36) JONNY MELLOR, 2007 and (17:13) ROSIE SMITH, 2012 for the 5km. The Festival was born with a single event in 1963, attracting just one visiting team and some local runners. By the 1970s it had evolved into a three-day event, attracting many big visiting groups from universities and athletics clubs from around the British Isles and sometimes further afield. The Peel Hill race had become a staple, with two other road races taking several formats over the years. Many regarded the 1970s and 1980s as being the heyday of the Festival, with numerous world-class athletes taking part in fields of several hundreds of runners, including the cream of Manx running talent.

After a few years of decline, a new organising committee took charge of the planning for the 2006 event, with the emphasis on attracting visiting groups back to the Island and also encouraging more local runners to take part. The 2006 Festival, with a new format in place that remains to this day, was a resounding success with entries more than doubling and many visiting groups returning. Support for the Festival continued to grow and the landmark 50th running in 2012 attracted an entry of nearly 400, including legendary marathon runner Ron Hill who attended as guest of honour. Not only did he attend but he ran in all three races, part of a streak of running every day which lasted for over 50 years. The momentum of the Festival seemed to be unstoppable, with a record 551 competitors taking part in 2017. But in 2020, the first-ever cancellation was forced on the event less than a month before Easter due to the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic and the 2021 event also had to be cancelled. It was feared that it would be difficult to win back the support of the hundreds of visiting athletes, with the traditional passing-on of experience of organising the annual pilgrimage to the Isle of Man being lost – but those fears were ill-founded. A fantastic response to the 2022 Festival ensured that this great event was re-established in style, and hopes are high that the 2023 Festival will be even better. The Festival welcomes runners of all abilities from Olympians and internationals (and there have been many over the years) to fun runners – the only proviso being a generous cut-off of 38 minutes at the 5km point of the 10km race. There is a team element to all the races and the Festival as a whole, with cash prizes up for grabs for the successful men’s and women’s teams as well as for the best individual runners in several categories. The social side of the Festival has become as legendary as the running over the years, and every year old friendships are renewed and new ones made.

There is one thing you should be aware off is that when you receive an email from me, the footer at the bottom has 4 options, of which one is “Unsubscribe Me From List”. GEORGE HARRISON RUNNING CAREER I recently received an email from GEORGE’S daughter KAREN, which she sent the following.
Hi Alan – Thank you for publishing a tribute to GEORGE in the Shaftesbury Barnet Harriers newsletter. SHEILA, KAREN and COLIN would like to thank everyone for the kind messages, cards and flowers we have received. If you would like to make a donation to British Heart Foundation in GEORGE’S memory, link https://www.bhf.org.uk/how-you-can-help/donate/your-donation/get-started?appealid=21PS03

KAREN also sent me a selection photographs of GEORGE running – beginning at Crown and Manor boys club and then with Highgate Harriers (Photograph’s further down). GEORGE loved cross country and road races. His favourites were 15 and 20 miles, he always said the marathon was just too far and he narrowly missed selection for the marathon at the Rome Olympics in 1960.

REQUEST FROM BRIAN FOWLER I am appealing for officiating assistance for the fixture at Harrow this Sunday. Volunteers required to act as funnel Number judges and recorders.
Five of our member clubs have contributed hugely to the continued success of the NWL YA League and to each of them we owe great thanks for their commitment.  The final fixture is always especially important as we need to fill all officiating positions to ensure accuracy of result sheets from which the results team then compile the list to enable the awards to be made to leading individuals and League Team Winners. If you can help, please contact TY HOLDEN at tyholden@icloud.com

RESULTS
NATIONAL CROSS COUNTRY CHAMPIONSHIPS – Took place at Bolesworth Castle, Chester on 25 February.

The conditions were good, no rain or mud but quite cold and overcast with a little sunshine now and again.
An excellent day for Shaftesbury, with the run of the day coming from HENRY DOVER winning the Under 17 title. It was good to see DAVID STONE on the podium again, taking the Bronze Medal in the Senior Men’s race.
The Athletics Weekly website published an excellent report on HENRY’S victory. With the headline taken from that famous football phrase “They think it’s all Dover” – The under-17 men’s race saw Shaftesbury’s HENRY DOVER – the English Schools 1500m champion, using his considerable speed to come from behind and deny Aldershot’s JAMES DARGAN who had built a good lead at halfway
DOVER won it in (20:39) from DARGAN’S (20:46) with former under-13 champion WILL RABJOHNS showing a resurgence of form to take bronze in (20:56) as the South took both the first four individual and team placings. DOVER said: “I always say I am not a cross country runner even if today proved me wrong but I used my track speed. I was chasing JAMES most of the race and must have done a 10 minute surge to catch him. He had a good lead after about 3km and I kept chasing him and when I did catch him I kept my head down and went right past. Everything was burning at the finish.” He had been fourth in his previous best National in 2019.

The Athletics Weekly website also reported, third place went to another first time senior in DAVID STONE. Last year he was second under-20 but he came through strongly recovering from a interrupted start. He realised early on he was missing his chip so had to get someone to pass it to him mid race! At the finish, he bent down to make sure the chip worked on the finishing mat just a second clear of RICHARD ALLEN (36:32) to (36:33) with Northern champion JOE STEWARD fifth.
DAVID joined Shaftesbury as a 10-year-old in September 2012, and was undefeated in 2013 competing on the track, cross country and road relays. I was at the National YAs road relays in October that year, and the weather was atrocious, rain all day. We were confident we had a decent U13 team, so on Leg 1 NATHAN FERNANDES finished in 9th place 32 seconds behind 1st place, DAVID STONE was next on Leg 2 and ran a blinder moving us up to 1stt position with a 29 second lead, on the final leg was JAMIE HARPER who extended the lead to 41 seconds winning the Gold Medals. The teams winning time was (42.18) with Team Bath 2nd (42.59).

WHY DO ATHLETICS EVENTS ATTRACT THE INTEREST OF FANS  The following article was published on the Athletics Weekly website recently.

It’s no news that football, basketball and volleyball are some of the big games in the sporting industry. However, athletics events are also at the top of the list for sports that attract the most fans. These games may not be as popular as their field counterparts, but a sizeable populace follows them. Various events are tagged “athletics,” each involving some piece of walking, running, jumping, or throwing. These competitions are further broken down into the sub-sports of cross-country running, race walking, and track and field. The most popular athletics competitions owe much of their current format to the Summer Olympics. When it comes to world championship competitions, the most important one is the World Athletics Championships because it features so many activities at the highest level. Such big competitions are one reason athletics is a significant draw for many individuals. There are a few other reasons why these events are well-liked; we shall explore them in this write-up.

Athletics: The epitome of individual work ethic Sprinters, throwers, jumpers and runners go through hurdles to stay on the highest level of their game and achieve their goals. In a project by ASHLEY SAMSON, she discovered that runners employ different mental strategies and breathing techniques to cope with the pain. Besides coping mechanisms, athletes cling to their motivation from family, friends, and fans. Since 1896, countless athletes have made their mark and won the hearts of fans all over the globe. Here are some of them:

PAAVO NURMI   NURMI went undefeated in the 10,000 metres he ran throughout his entire running career and set 22 world records spanning distances from 1500 metres to the marathon. During his prime, NURMI won 121 consecutive races for 800 metres and longer. The number of world records this American holds is more than double that of Ethiopian legend HAILE GEBRSELASSIE.

EDWIN MOSES   Only a few athletes have maintained a winning streak as long as EDWIN MOSES has. MOSES won 122 straight races between 1977 and 1987. MOSES was unbeatable in a 400m hurdles competition for 9 years, 9 months and 9 days. MOSES also broke his world record four times during this time, with his best time being (47.02) seconds.

SERGEY BUBKA   BUBKA set 35 world records in the pole vault during his career. Also, BUBKA amassed eleven titles in the Olympics and the World Championships, and he was the first pole vaulter to clear (6.10) metres. Since then, BUBKA has only lost that record twice.

Athletics’ rareness prompts people to watch   When it comes to football, there are matches slated for each day; hence, there are markets for these fixtures around the clock at online bookies. Athletic events are less commonly held. As a result, you might only sometimes find betting options for athletics events, even on the recommended bookies where you don’t have to worry about self-exclusion at NonGamstopBetSites. However, it is for this same reason that athletics events are liked by many. Since the most significant competitions are held biennially, and every four years, punters and fans tune in to watch these events. The thrill builds as these fans look out for who will set a new record, walk home with a gold medal, fall below expectations, and the like. So, athletics events not only present more betting options but also give people a break from football matches and other popular sports.

What are the most special athletics events?   There are different athletics events to look forward to, including the Summer Olympics. Since the 1896 Summer Olympics, which marked the beginning of the modern Olympic movement, athletics has competed at every Summer Olympic Games. The current schedule includes road walking, road running, and track and field competitions. Prior editions of the Olympics included cross-country running, but it was removed following the 1924 Summer Olympics. Other big-time athletics competitions that hold include:

World Athletics Championships The World Athletics Championships are a sporting event held every two years. Along with the Olympic Games, they are the pinnacle of senior international outdoor sports competitions for track and field athletics worldwide. It was first held in Helsinki in 1983 where winners included sprinter CARL LEWIS, decathlete DALEY THOMPSON and marathon runner GRETE WAITZ. With over 1800 top athletes competing over nine days, this event expands athletics’ reach, exposure, and impact. There are 49 athletics competitions in the championship, 24 for men, 24 for women, and one mixed relay. Following the event’s debut, the tournament was held every four years until 1991, when they changed to a two-year schedule.

World Athletics Indoor Championships   As the most prestigious indoor track and field sporting event, the World Athletics Indoor Championships attracts athletes from around the globe every year. The World Athletics governing body coordinates the event, just like the outdoor World Athletics Championships. The first World Indoor Games were held in Paris, France, in 1985. Since its debut, the Indoor Championships have been held every two years, except in 2003 and 2004, when they were held concurrently. It provides fans with three days of action-packed events in a smaller arena where that watching can see these athletes up close. The event has produced star athletes like Armand Duplantis, who hold multiple titles.

World Athletics Half Marathon Championships   First launched in 1992, the World Athletics Half Marathon Championships were held annually until 2010 when they were changed to a biennial event. Recently it has evolved into the World Athletics Road Running Championships, which features races over one mile, 5km and half-marathon, with the first edition of these new championships taking place in Riga, Latvia in September and October this year.
