UNDER 20, SENIOR AND VETERAN WOMEN – The North London Cross Country Association are considering a proposal to equalise the distance run by both Men and Women. Which means from 2019-2020 season the Women’s race would be 5 Miles of 8000m, increasing it from the current distance of 6000m. The Club has been requested to write to the Association by 31 May of the decision of Shaftesbury Barnet Harriers members. UK WOMENS ATHLETIC LEAGUE 2019 – We have had to make a number of management changes for our UKWAL team in 2019. NICOLE CARA has had to take temporary retirement due to a change in her personal circumstances (new job + new academic commitment). Her role in the interim period will be taken up by CLYDE GORDON who will look after the team on the day and the transport arrangements, with assistance from former team manager STEPHANIE PAPARIZOS.
COLETTE HURLEY formerly YDL team manager, will be taking on the responsibility for communication with the UKWAL squad.

COPTHALL AND MILL HILL OPEN SPACES MASTERPLAN CONSULTATION –The London Borough of Barnet (LBB) have for some time been working on the Copthall and Mill Hill Open Spaces Masterplan which includes plans for the Copthall site to extend into a sports hub as well as maintaining recreation use. A draft plan was circulated in 2018 and a period of consultation took place and the plan was broadly supported.
During this consultation period above, Premiership Rugby (PRL), The Rugby Football Union (RFU), and World Rugby announced that it was extending the professional rugby season to June each year with effect from 2021. This prescribed change would significantly reduce the time when the Allianz Park Track would be in summer mode and available for club and school’s competitions. This change would mean that the track would not be in Athletics mode before the middle of July. Both Athletics and Saracens agreed that these changes would be detrimental to Athletics and Saracens proposed that they would, in consultation with Athletics and LBB, deliver a new Track on the Copthall site for Athletics. Athletics has been led in this matter by Dave Bedford, Bryan Smith and Steve Harris (Barnet & District AC).
LBB have now agreed a draft revised plan firstly to accommodate a new athletics stadium and secondly the inclusion of a proposal submitted by the ECB and Middlesex County Cricket Club. The revision to the design maintains the long-term vision for the site, which seeks to provide traditional and non-traditional opportunities with the ability to deliver a range of benefits for residents.
The Council are now consulting on this draft revised masterplan for Barnet Copthall specifically and welcome feedback on the proposal. The consultation will be live until 17 May 2019.

Please take a few minutes to follow the link above and to look at the proposals and submit your feedback.

CURRENT DISTRIBUTION OF SHAFTESBURY INFORMATION Currently I notify members (by email) using “MailChimp”. The reason I changed, was in November last year “Gmail” put a limit of 100 addresses that users could send to in a 24-hour period, and currently I send to approximately 850 members each issue.

On seeking technical advice “MailChimp” was recommended as the best way for SBH to go forward. There is one thing you should be aware off is that when you receive an email from me, the footer at the bottom has 4 options, of which one is “Unsubscribe Me From List”. Could I ask you not to select this as if you do you will be automatically removed from my distribution list.

Could I ask you to email me at alanweller111@gmail.com stating whether you wish it to remain at 6000m or change to 8000m.

JAKE SHELLEY’S ASPIRATIONS FOR THE FUTURE – Many thanks to JAKE for his frankness on his and the Club’s future.
JAKE has been a member of Shaftesbury since joining as a Under 15 in October 2003, and it was not long before his talent became clear for all to see, becoming a regular in the UK Young Athletes and British Athletics League teams. From 2009 to 2013 JAKE went to Somerville College, Oxford and was on the 4-year Biochemistry course, following this he completed a master’s degree in Exercise Science at the University of New Mexico finishing in early 2016. His personal bests are 800m (1:53.78), 1500m (3:43.73), 3000m (7:59.57), 5000m (13:46.17) and 10000m (29:26.52) also on the road 5K (14.09) and 5K (29.23).

As I have gotten older, I have come to feel that winning team titles can be one of the most rewarding aspects of being a runner. When I was younger, I barely gave club races a second thought as I was so focused on my individual goals. But looking back now, I realise that winning a conference title with the University of New Mexico is one of my fondest memories so far. Having the team aspect lifted our own individual performances because we ran as hard as we could knowing that we all depended on each other for success. And sharing the experience of winning made it more lasting, and is something we all still talk about.
I would like to create that kind of team achievement with Shaftesbury Barnet, but that requires buy in from the rest of you. We need to plan ahead as a group. We need to build these events into our schedules for the season, and we need to want to become the dominant distance running club in the UK.

I propose that we focus on four key winter races:

  •         National 6 Stage Road Relays
  •         National Cross Country Relays
  •         National Cross Country Championships
  •         National 12-Stage Road Relays

These fixtures have perhaps lost some of the prestige that they once held, but I think they are on the upswing once again. For example, the standard at the road relays last weekend was fantastic. The winning time for Leeds was over 5 minutes faster than the winning time last year and there were 6 teams under 4:18 as opposed to just one last year. Winning it now would really mean something, because there are lots of clubs giving it their all. ALEX YEE, DEWI GRIFFITHS and ANDY VERNON all put in great legs, so it is also good to measure yourself against those top guys individually.
They fall during the winter months, when we are all putting in the miles for the summer season, and I think they can be very good annual benchmarks of how your winter training is progressing. For instance, in the past 3 years, I have run 26:40, 26:10, and then 26:01 on the long leg at the National 12-stage relays, so it is great to see that annual progression.
Having helped to get the teams together for the relays over the past couple of years, I think we need to reflect on our approach to these team events. In the past 6 months, we have finished 7th, 18th, 16th and 9th in the above 4 events. We can do much better, and it has been frustrating to see us fall short.

We are one of only a very small number of clubs in the country who have enough top level distance runners to make winning these events a possibility. I think we should do everything we can to make that possibility into a reality. I know we all have our own individual goals, but I think it would be immensely satisfying to come together to win team national titles, and would be something we would all look back on fondly in years to come.
To move forward and fulfil our potential, I would like all of our distance runners to fill in a spreadsheet at the end of the summer season, saying yes or no to each of these four events. Saying yes would mean that you will aim to be at the race if you are fit and healthy, and will plan other races/training trips around that. 4 days out of 365 is not much to ask, and I think the potential rewards are there to make the sacrifice worthwhile, if we all buy in. This small amount of forward planning would help us to get the most out of ourselves as a group.
We have to finish in the top 25 of the Southern 6 stage and 12 stage relays to qualify for the national relays. If you can only do one, I would rather that you ran the national relays, because I think we have enough strength in depth that we should never have a big problem finishing in the top 25 at the Southern events, but getting our best team out at Nationals is essential if we are going to win there.
This is probably my last shot at trying to change the culture within the club, from what it a currently is – a collection of fantastic individual distance runners, to what it could be – the best distance running team in the UK. If it has no effect, I will step down from any team captain role and forget about trying to win these. That would be sad for me, given that I have grown up with Shaftesbury and have always wanted our generation to add to the club’s illustrious history.

CROSS COUNTRY MERIT RANKINGS – Athletics Weekly have published their final merit ranking for Under 20 and Senior athletes. They are not their guess of what happens in a race but an assessment of the winter season’s form, primarily based on the two domestic races of the winter – the Inter-Counties and English National and the two overseas championships.

Senior WomenNAOMI TASCHIMOWITZ 16th, 7th National (29.17), 14th CAU (39.32), 3rd South (28.08), 8th Mil K (19.16), 17th Liv (27.14), 7th Rots (23.38) – Under 20 MenJEREMY DEMPSEY 9th, 3rd National (28.42), 16th BUCS (1st U20 32.55), 16th RAF v East v Camb U (38.11)

ECO-FRIENDLY LONDON EVENTSReported in Athletics Weekly recently, London Marathon Events have committed to becoming a world leader in delivering sustainable mass participation sports events. New measures at this month’s marathon include a new closed-loop recycling project for plastic bottles in Tower Hamlets, Greenwich, Southwark and Canary Wharf.
They will reduce the number of drinks stations from 26 to 19, removing 215,000 plastic bottles on the course, while the event will also see 700 runners trial new bottle belts made from 90% recycled materials.

A WARNING REGARDING OPEN MEETINGS 2019 – I spoke to 2 of the organisers of open meetings, regarding whether there was a closing date for their meeting, especially as now entries are online only. Their response was when a meeting opens on the online system, there could be a 100m event that takes place between 19.00pm to 19.45pm, they would have ascertained that between these times there will be 8 races. Once the 64 entries for those 8 races have been filled, the event is therefore closed. Therefore, there could be a chance that an event could be closed 1 Week or 2 weeks before the meeting date. Therefore, please beware of this.

NEW ATHLETICS STADIUM FOR BARNET COPTHALL – VERY URGENT – Due to a planned extension to the professional rugby season, which would come into full effect by 2021, athletics would not be able to start at Allianz Park until mid-July. Both Saracens and Barnet Council agree that this is untenable for both Barnet schools and SBH.  At a recent meeting of the Copthall Community Sports Group, CASSIE BRIDGER (Barnet Council) presented the Copthall and Mill Hill Open Spaces masterplan update.
A period of consultation was originally undertaken by the Council between May to July 2018 on an initial draft, which broadly demonstrated the support for the proposals (for both Copthall and Mill Hill Open Spaces). However, the extension of the rugby season has required the Council to engage with National Governing Bodies of Sport and stakeholders to reflect feedback responses. This resulted in an amended design to the draft Copthall Masterplan specifically to include 2 major changes. Firstly, to accommodate a new athletics stadium and secondly, a venue and coaching centre for Middlesex County Cricket.
The revision to the design maintains the long-term vision for the site, which seeks to provide traditional and non-traditional opportunities with the ability to deliver a range of benefits for residents.
The Council are now consulting on this final draft masterplan for Barnet Copthall specifically and welcome feedback on the proposal. The consultation will be live from now until 17 May 2019. https://engage.barnet.gov.uk/Cophall-Masterplan-phase2-2019 Please take a few minutes to follow the link and to look at the proposals and submit your feedback.
Thanks, DAVID BEDFORD and BRYAN SMITH (SBH nominated representatives)

SHAFTESBURY QUARTERLY MAGAZINE ARTICLE, SEPTEMBER AND DECEMBER 1969 In December last year I wrote about the history of the SBH Magazine, in which I have copies back to September 1969. Today’s article commences with extracts from the September and December 1969 issues. The December issue was the first one that HAROLD ASHTON had volunteered to be the magazine editor.

The opening page covered comments from our Club President CHARLES HARRISON, firstly congratulating DAVE BEDFORD on his recent performances and receiving his colours for Great Britain. Last season we were placed in al Middlesex Championships – let’s go better this season, the team were the first winners of the North of the Thames Youths Championships.
The AGM scheduled for Friday 24 October took place at the Henry Burden Hall, Hendon close to the Town Hall, also on 4 April is the Club Dinner and Dance at the Hendon Way Hotel.

ANNUAL REPORT FOR THE YEAR FOR THE YEAR 1968-1969 Produced by our Secretary DONALD LEE.

CROSS COUNTRY  We fielded teams in all age-groups throughout the season, our team and individual performances were all overshadowed by the string of successes by DAVE BEDFORD. In the Middlesex Championships with our three teams winning medals, the Juniors and Seniors finishing 2nd and the Youths 3rd. Featuring in the Youths team were STEVE BOND, DICK BOBER and JULIAN GOATER.

TRACK AND FIELD The season started well winning both trophies at the Watford meeting. It was pleasing to see Shaftesbury in all age-groups at the Middlesex Championships, with wins for HUGH RICHARDS and STEVE BOND. There were new Southern Championship records set by DAVE BEDFORD U23 in the 5000m (13:42.8) and 10,000m (28:24.4) both club records, he also set club records at the Mile (4.02.9), 1500m (3:44.9) and 2 Miles (8:42.6).

ROAD RUNNING GERRY ELMORE and TED NOLAN headed our road race section throughout the season. Race of the season was the Shaftesbury 10 which must be rated the best ever, with 170 runners on ward, humid but dry afternoon, and the testing 3 lap course. The winner was International BILL ADCOCKS (48.18) taking 79 seconds off the 1967 record, second was a tiring DAVE BEDFORD (48.54), other Shaftesbury runners were GERRY ELMORE 6th (51.42), MARTIN GREY 11th (52.21), HUGH STARKEY 15th (53.05), TED NOLAN 52nd (56.52) and TONY SUNDERLAND 65th (58.01). Shaftesbury secured the team title with (11 points), 2nd Cambridge Harriers (26) and 3rd Belgrave Harriers (36).

ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING Which was presided by Club President CHARLES HARRISON who was in his third year, a large number of active athletes expressed their views on many track and social matters. Club Subscriptions were reviewed and it was agreed to increase them to, Seniors £2.50, Juniors £1.25, Youths 75p, Under 15 50p. A proposal came from athletes that a fee of 5p would be payable at all club fixtures, and was carried by all. HAROLD ASHTON pointed out that this is not so different from the “bath Money” or “Dressing Room” fee that used to be collected in the 1930s.

COACHING NEWS – BRYAN SMITH reported that there was an excellent response to Shaftesbury’s first Coaching/Training day on Sunday 2 November at Copthall Stadium. Also, some members showed interest in becoming coaches, and were given details of the Southern Counties winter coaching lectures at Crystal Palace.
As a part of increasing membership, BRYAN will be organising coaching days for Youths and Boys next spring, which will be open to schools and friends of members.

CLUB BEST PERFORMANCES After producing nineteen editions of the CBP book, HAROLD ASHTON has handed this task over to GEOFF MORPHITIS and this is his report.
Pride of place must, of course, go to DAVE BEDFORD, who now holds 12 club records, as a Youth, Junior and Senior.
I would like to take the opportunity of congratulating NEIL JOSEPH, HUGH RICHARDS, TONY GAUGHAN, DICK BOBER, MICHAEL CALDWELL, SID TURNHAM, JULIAN GOATER and BOB MEATON, who all put up some very creditable performances throughout the season.
The main problem I encountered is compiling the lists was the introduction of the metric system. Although the majority of tracks had been converted, some important meetings were still held using yards. As an aid to converting times, particularly for the mile to 1500m, I used the International Scoring Tables.

The next in the series 1970 will be published in the May newsletter.

STUART BENSON UPGRADED TO OLYMPIC BRONZE MEDAL  STUART was a member of Shaftesbury from 2010 to 2017, and was predominately a sprinter with personal bests of (10.49) in the 100m and (21.40) in the 200m. He now competes for the Royal Air Force and is ranked UK No.4 V35 in the Triple Jump. He was a member of GB Sochi 2014 Winter Olympic four-man bobsleigh team who were JOHN JACKSON, BRUCE TASKER, JOEL FEARON and STUART who finished fifth in Sochi behind two Russian crews.

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) banned three Russian bobsledders following the 2016 McLaren report “Finally we have the result we have waited so long for,” JACKSON said.
“Disappointingly, it is a medal we should have received on an Olympic podium in 2014.
“Cheats have cost us that moment, along with other nations too. Recognition from the IOC of the Sochi 2014 Winter Olympic four-man bobsleigh result is a big step forward to us receiving our Olympic bronze medal.”
JACKSON piloted the four-man bobsleigh team made up of Welshman TASKER, England’s FEARON and BENSON of Scotland.
“Everyone involved in British Olympic Sport, and most particularly the athletes, will be delighted by the overdue award of the four-man bob bronze medal from Sochi,” Chairman of the BOA SIR HUGH ROBERTSON said. “However, it is yet another example of British athletes denied their moment of podium glory by state sponsored cheating.”
Athletes from both Russia 1 (gold medallists) and Russia 2 (fourth) were found to have committed doping violations following thorough re-analysis of samples taken at the Games.
The IOC subsequently banned bobsledders ALEXANDER KASYANOV, ALEKSEI PUSHKAREV and ILVIR KHUZIN.
The bronze brings Team GB’s medal tally from Sochi 2014 to five after LIZZY YARNOLD’S skeleton gold, JENNY JONES winning snowboard slopestyle bronze, and silver and bronze medals for the men’s and women’s curling rinks respectively.

GB bobsleigh performance director GARY ANDERSON, who left the setup in August 2017, told BBC Sport: “I’m delighted for the athletes, because I know what they went through to achieve this result.
“In 2010 we set the target to medal in Sochi, we meticulously planned for it, we can now say we achieved that. I just want the athletes now to be acknowledged.”
Analysis – The GB four-man squad have long known they were likely to be upgraded but they have endured an agonising three years of waiting since retesting of samples from the 2014 Olympics began.
During that time, there have also been numerous appeals by the Russian athletes and their federation as they tried desperately to reverse the decision to strip them of this and other medals from their home Games.
This confirmation is a much-needed boost for British bobsledders who last claimed an Olympic medal through a third-place finish at the 1998 Nagano Games.
The GB four-man team finished a disappointing 17th and 18th at the 2018 Winter Games and last year UK Sport decided to withdraw all of their funding for the next Olympics – Beijing 2022.
The Russian team who won on the day in Sochi are refusing to return the gold medals they were awarded at the time meaning new medals will be issued to the ‘new’ winners Latvia.
The athletes will be allowed to decide where they would like to be awarded the medals, with a presentation at the next Winter Olympics in 2022 a possibility. However, with around three years to go until those Games it’s possible that a presentation could be made elsewhere at an earlier date.
