YOUTH TALENT PROGRAMME 2019-2021  Congratulations to EMILY HATHAWAY and FREYA STAPLETON have been selected for the Youth Talent Programme for the next 2 years.
It’s the first stage of the Performance Pathway for young athletes in England aged 16. The programme (formerly AASE) a collaboration between England Athletics and British Athletics gives athletes the opportunity to learn, train and develop the necessary skills to progress on to becoming a senior international and is there to compliment your club training with your personal coach. This is a fantastic achievement as only a focused number of athletes across England have been shortlisted and identified to be part of the programme, which is there to confirm and support long term GB and Commonwealth Games potential.

ROSS SAMBROOK IN FOR A SHOCK – The following article was published in the “Metro” on 23 October.
The grandson of ex-Kazakhstan president NURSULTAN NAZARBAYEV broke into a pensioner’s flat to do his washing and bit a policeman.
AISULTAN NAZARBAYEV, 30, was chased by SGT ROSS SAMBROOK after the elderly woman came home to find he had smashed her pots and put his clothes in the machine on 5 June. The cocaine addict bit the officer after being tasered in Covent Garden, London.
NAZARBAYEV admitted assault and criminal damage. He received an 18-month suspended jail term at Southward crown court.

STUART SINGER’S VIEWS ON THE NHS – The following article was published in the “Economia” which is the monthly magazine of the Institute of Chartered Accountants.

STUART has run marathon’s around the globe with his PB (3:18.48) in the London Marathon in 2012, also mainly at the Oak Hill Parkrun has now completed 272 races. STUART is a partner at RBP, a firm of specialist medical accountants.
There’s a good reason why the topic of privatisation of the NHS is so controversial. Privatisation sounds the death knell for BEVAN’S vision of free healthcare or all at the point of delivery, based on need, not on wealth.
The increasing demands of an ageing population and the financial restraints responsible for squeezing the health service of the necessary investments resulted in an institution that has begun to buckle. But this is no excuse for betraying the founding principles of a free NHS.
To my mind it’s impossible to apply business methods and the profit motives to the provision of healthcare. Put yourself in the shoes of any doctor tasked with explaining to their patient that they’re unable to operate because it’s not cost-effective!
To hamper devoted professionals with the economic restraints of targets and quotas flies in the face of their Hippocratic Oath to do no harm.

START FITNESS METROPOLITAN LEAGUE – The second fixture of five takes place on Saturday 9 November at Stanborough Park, Welwyn Garden City, Hertfordshire (SatNav AL8 6DF).
Race Headquarters – Adjacent to the building by the playground at the north end of the north car park, close to the Start/Finish, refreshments will be available in this area. Registration will be adjacent to the Start/Finish.
Changing Facilities – There are changing rooms on the south side of the park, by the Sailing Centre.
Toilets are available in the building by the playground. Extra toilets will be provided nearby.
There are also toilets located at the Sailing Centre on the south side of the Park.
Course Location – North Side Stanborough Park – The Fixture Information and the course maps have been issued on the basis that we are able to use the field adjacent to the playground for an assembly area and for the finishing funnel. There is however the possibility that works will be starting in this field prior to 9 November. I have therefore drawn up some maps with an alternative position for the finishing funnel and appropriate adjustments to the course. These arrangements are less satisfactory than the ones I have issued so, as there is still no sign of the works starting, I am gambling on the hope that the field will still be clear on 9 November.
Course Description – Start and Finish in grassed field, remainder undulating parkland course suitable for spikes.
Public Transport – Welwyn Garden City Station (Main Line) 1.25 miles.
Directions From Major Roads – Leave the A1(M) at Junction 4, (after the Hatfield Tunnel). At the roundabout take the second exit to A414/A6129. At the next roundabout take the first exit A6129. At the bottom of the dual carriageway take the second exit out of the roundabout. The entrance to the car park on the north side is on your left after around 100m. The entrance to the car park on the south side is more or less opposite but you cannot gain access from the left side of the carriageway.
As early arrivers will undoubtedly fill the car park on the north side, you may be advised to go straight to the one on the south side.
Parking – There is a fairly large car park on the north side of the Park, adjacent to the course.
There is a very large car park on the south side of the Park, 5 minutes walk to the course.
These car parks operate by automatic number plate recognition. You must pay or you may incur a fine. Unfortunately we have not been able to negotiate a reduced rate this year, a list of the charges are published adjacent to this. It is a good idea to share cars and share costs. If you choose to park on the local roads, please park considerately and avoid causing any annoyance to residents.
YOU ARE ADVISED TO ALLOW SUFFICIENT TIME TO PARK AND PAY
There is a footpath under the road bridge, providing traffic-free access between the south side and the north side of the Park.
Access to both of these car parks is only permitted from the adjacent side of the carriageway. If you cannot find a space on the north side, to get to the south side you must drive to the roundabout at the top of the hill and return on the other side of the carriageway
YOU MUST OBEY THE TRAFFIC SIGNS

On seeking technical advice “MailChimp” was recommended as the best way for SBH to go forward. There is one thing you should be aware off is that when you receive an email from me, the footer at the bottom has 4 options, of which one is “Unsubscribe Me From List”. CURRENT DISTRIBUTION OF SHAFTESBURY INFORMATION Currently I notify members (by email) using “MailChimp”. The reason I changed, was in November 2017 “Gmail” put a limit of 100 addresses that users could send to in a 24-hour period, and currently I send to approximately 850 members each issue.

On seeking technical advice “MailChimp” was recommended as the best way for SBH to go forward. There is one thing you should be aware off is that when you receive an email from me, the footer at the bottom has 4 options, of which one is “Unsubscribe Me From List”. Could I ask you not to select this as if you do you will be automatically removed from my distribution list.

START FITNESS METROPOLITAN LEAGUE – The first fixture of five took place last Saturday 12 October at Claybury, Essex.
Congratulations on an outstanding day at Claybury, with probably the best Individual and Team results that I can remember. Of the 12 races we had no less than 5 Individual wins from POSIE SHAW U11G, GIANLEO STUBBS U13B, SAMUEL GREENSTEIN U15B, FREYA STAPLETON U17W and NAOMI TASCHIMOWITZ SW. Our teams were equally successful with wins from the UNDER 13 BOYS and UNDER 15 GIRLS/UNDER 17 WOMEN, the UNDER 15 BOYS/UNDER 17 MEN were a close 2nd to the home team Woodford Green & Essex Ladies and the SENIOR WOMEN finished in 4th place.

The next fixture is a little closer to home at Welwyn on Saturday 9 November, so please make a big effort to try to exceed our excellent days reaults at Claybury.

As a 13 year old, CLYDE arrived from Wembley with his mates wanting to do athletics and 38 years on he is still an active member of SBH.  His enthusiasm and encouragement ensured that SBH became established as a major force in Athletics nationally and drove colleagues to reach their own potential.  CLYDE is a consummate team player and leads by example.
CLYDE is a qualified coach and looks after our young throws squad (which includes significant BAME and women).  He’s a qualified field official and timekeeper and has been working with our photofinish team where his IT knowledge has been invaluable.
CLYDE has team managed our very successful YAL boys team, then the NJAL team and latterly into YDL team, winning a number of regional and national titles over the years.  He was also a key member of the management team which took the successful SBH men’s team into Europe at both Junior and Senior level.  This year, he also volunteered to manage the club team in the UKWAL team.

GEOFF joined SBH in 1964. He took up coaching in 1972 and became team manager (Div 5 Southern League) and has continued to the present time winning the BAL Premiership title in 2012 & 2013. He was a member of the BAL Finance committee and awarded life membership of the BAL.
He became Club Treasurer in 1990 and remain so (nearly 30 years!). He was Club Chairman (1982-89) and Club President (1987-1990).
In 2004 he led the team of Club officers in the successful bid for the 5 year management contract of Copthall Stadium. He was heavily involved with the redevelopment of Allianz Park as the first joint use facility for both athletics and Premiership Rugby.
GEOFF was a founding member of the National Junior Athletic League and managed the SBH team to numerous victories with the Club representing GB&NI in Europe.
He has organised of the LICC series since inception in 2004.
He was elected a member of the London Council of EA in 2007.

START FITNESS METROPOLITAN LEAGUE – The first fixture of five takes place this Saturday 12 October at Claybury, Essex. (Please see all information in upcoming fixtures below).

The League was founded in 1966 in which Shaftesbury Harriers (Became Shaftesbury Barnet Harriers in 1986 after amalgamating with Barnet Ladies) were one of the founding members. Currently we are the most successful club with the most combined Individual and Team wins covering all age-groups.
This season the league is made up of 23 athletic and running clubs from Berkshire, Essex, Hertfordshire and Middlesex.

It was an outstanding 2018-2019 season for the club, although some of the age-groups were poorly supported. The final team positions were as follows – U11 Boys 2nd, U11 Girls 3rd, U13 Boys 9th, U13 Girls 10th, U15 Boys/U17 Men 2nd, U15 Girls/U17 Women 1st and B team 2nd, Senior Men 8th, Senior Women 7th, Masters Men 4th.
It is important to remember that there is a minimum number of finishers which will formulate a team score, if we do have the sufficient numbers then the team score is drastically reduced.
These are the minimum numbers to record a completed team Under 11, 13, 15 & 17 Boys & Girls 4 to score, Senior Men 12 to score, Senior Women 5 to score, Masters Men 5 to score, Masters Women 4 to score.

All the 5 Metropolitan League races count towards the Club XC Points Championships, also the Clubs XC Individual Championships include the 7 December fixture for the Under 20 Men, 5 Miles Senior Men and Masters Men 40+ and 11 January fixture is the Under 11 Boys title.
So please make an effort to support the Club and your fellow athletes at Claybury this Saturday.

IAAF WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPSTakes place from Friday 27 September to Sunday 6 October at Doha, Qatar.

Day 1 27 September Started with the Heats of the 100m OJIE EDOBURUN was drawn in Heat 1 and as he said after the race he ran an OK race, and finished in 5th place, he then had to wait for the remaining 5 heats to be concluded, to his delight he made the semi-finals as the last of 6 qualifiers. ZHARNEL HUGHES ran in Heat 3 and after a reasonable start, he then after a smooth transition moved away to a comfortable win, qualifying for the semi-finals.
100m – Heat 1 OJIE EDOBURUN 5th (10.23 w-0.3), Heat 3 ZHARNEL HUGHES 1st (10.08 w-0.8)

Later in the day LIZZIE BIRD proudly lined up in Heat 2 of the 3000m Steeplechase, and from the gun I believe her approach and technique, especially over the water jump was exceptional. She finished 6th in a personal best (9:30.13) taking 6.71 seconds off her current Club Record (9:36.84). Her time puts her UK No1 in 2019 and UK all-time No.3 behind BARBARA PARKER (9:24.24) and HELEN CLITHEROE (9:29.14).
3000m Steeplechase – Heat 2 LIZZIE BIRD 6th (9:30.13)

Day 2 28 September Started with the Heats of the 800m KYLE LANGFORD was drawn in Heat 5, the pace of the race was quick, reaching the bell in (51.38), in the home straight KYLE produced his customary late burst and was unable to catch the runners in front, finishing 5th qualifying for tomorrow’s semi-finals.
800m – Heat 5 KYLE LANGFORD 5th (1:46.14)

Later in the day was the semi-finals of the 100m OJIE EDOBURUN was drawn in semi-final 1 and finished in 6th place, after the race he admitted he had a poor race. But following an outstanding 2019, his mindset was very positive, and is looking forward to next year’s Olympics. In semi-final 3 ZHARNEL HUGHES after a slow start, ran a controlled race to finish in 2nd place qualifying for tomorrow’s final.
100m – Semi-Final 2 OJIE EDOBURUN 6th (10.22 w-0.1), Semi-Final 3 ZHARNEL HUGHES 2nd (10.05 w0.8)

The final event of the day was the final of the 100m ZHARNEL HUGHES who after the race admitted that he did not execute his race to well, and yes you get one of those days. With the Olympics some 10 months away you will see a different athlete.
100m – Final ZHARNEL HUGHES 6th (10.03 w0.6)

Day 3 29 September The first event of the day was the Heats of the 200m –ZHARNEL HUGHES who after last nights 100m Final, ran a controlled race to finish in 2nd place with a seasons best (20.24) taking .01 of a second off his 25 August time, ranking him UK N0.2 in 2019.
200m –
Heat 2 ZHARNEL HUGHES 2nd (SB 20.24 w0.5), Heat 3 ANTONIO INFANTINO 7th (20.89 w0.8)

Later in the day was the semi-finals of the 800m KYLE LANGFORD was drawn in Heat 3, the pace of the race was reasonable but ended up being the slowest of the 3 semi-finals. With the runners approaching the final 30 metres, the Moroccan OUSSAMA NABIL (who was subsequently disqualified) tried for a gap that was not there and threw KYLE out of his stride, and finished in 5th place.
800m – Semi-Final 3 KYLE LANGFORD 5th (1:46.41)

Day 4 30 September The semi-finals of the 200m took place today –ZHARNEL HUGHES running his 5th race of the championshipshts ran a slowish bend, and finiished in 3rd place.
200m –
Semi-Final 3 ZHARNEL HUGHES 3rd (20.30 w-0.1)

NORTH WEST LONDON LEAGUEThe first fixture of five took place on Saturday 28 September at Horsenden Hill.

SCOTT LINCOLN’S VIEWS ON BRITISH THROWERSThe following article was posted on the Athletics Weekly website.

SCOTT LINCOLN, the UK Shot Put No.1, believes British throwers are more likely to improve if they work together and share ideas.
The British champions has spent an eye-opening time training with world champions RYAN WHITING and TOM WALSH in the United States and he says they have a different mentality to the one he has experienced in the UK.
“In America everyone wants you to do well whereas I think in the UK there’s a bit of bitterness between each other although hopefully that can change,” he says.
“People also don’t like sharing experiences in the UK and aren’t very open to training together but it is improving and hopefully now I’ve broken 20 metres it will boost the shot put generally in this country.”
SCOTT who threw a PB of (20.39m) to almost qualify for the IAAF World Championships this year, adds “SOPHIE MCKINNA is also doing great stuff with the female side of things in the shot put and I speak to her most days.”
SCOTT says training with WHITING the for world indoor champion from the United States, and WALSH the reigning world champion from New Zealand, taught him the power of collaboration.
“It was a massive learning curve,” he says. “They told me I was lacking a few basics, my technique was a bit all over the place and my energy was going in the wrong directions. They said “Once you get this and that sorted out, there’s no reason you can’t break 21-metre-plus.”
“And I though wow, hearing that from such idols of the sport was incredible to hear. They’ve both thrown over (22.60m) so they know what they’re talking about.”
SCOTT continues; “So they’ve helped me technically but also given lots of general encouragement. RYAN checks up on me about once a month and it’s good to have him as a bit of a mentor alongside my coach PAUL WILSON.”
