ARE ANY OF YOU OUT THERE ASPRIRING ARTISTS Do you want to sell your works of art to raise some money? The selected artworks will be for sale at Zari Gallery. Profits will be split with 50% going directly to the Artist, 30% divided equally between the LLOYD COWAN Bursary and the RON PICKERING Memorial Fund and 20% of sales going to the gallery.

The RON PICKERING Memorial Fund and the LLOYD COWAN Bursary are delighted to announce their first fundraising collaboration to showcase the artistic talents of track and field athletes. “The Art of the Athlete” exhibition will be held at the Zari Gallery in London from 2nd to 27th May 2022. It will promote art by current and former track and field athletes and raise money for the two organisations to support athletes and coaches.
The gallery is inviting interested athlete artists from across the globe to submit their work for a chance to take part in the exhibition. They will join ROALD BRADSTOCK, aka The “Olympic Picasso”, and Tokyo 800m silver medallist KEELY HODGKINSON, who are both contributing. KEELY was supported by the RON PICKERING Memorial Fund (RPMF) from the age of 15 and is a keen painter in her spare time.
Olympic 400m Champion CHRISTINE OHURUOGU set up the LLOYD COWAN Bursary (LCB) following the death of her legendary coach from Covid-19 in 2021. She said: “It is fantastic to be launching this exhibition with RPMF. LLOYD and RON were giants of our sport. This is a unique opportunity for athletes and former athletes to showcase their hidden talents and sell their artwork whilst helping us to support the next generation of talent.”

CYCLE RIDE IN DORSET Last week, JOHN DRYDEN and JULIAN GOATER had arranged to meet up with HUGH RICHARDS at his home in Poole, Dorset. On the Tuesday, they had arranged to go out for a long bike ride, and after some 40km JOHN inadvertently touched HUGH’S rear wheel, and crashed to the ground. They were on an isolated country road, but were fortunate that not too long after the accident a car approached them and stopped, they managed to get JOHN into the car and took him to the A&E department at Poole Hospital. It turned out that JOHN had broken the top of his femur on his right leg, and they proceeded to reset the bone with a metal plate and screws. After a week in hospital, JOHN finally left the hospital on Tuesday this week, they managed to get JOHN in the back seat of the car, and ANN got him home to Guildford safely. We wish JOHN a very speedy recovery.

50 YEARS PRESENTATION IN 2016  Last week I published the list of 22 members who have completed 50 years or more with SBH.
HUGH STARKEY reminded me that on Saturday 6 August 2016, at the British Athletic League and UK Women’s Athletic League joint fixture at Allianz Park, JOHN DRYDEN, HUGH RICHARDS, HUGH STARKEY and KEN TOLLADY were invited to a special presentation of an engraved wine glass goblet, engraved with the SBH logo and their name, to celebrate 50 years with SBH.

The photographs were sent by JOHN DRYDEN, and the 1st photograph of left to right, HUGH RICHARDS, KEN TOLLADY, JOHN DRYDEN and DAVE BEFORD who presented the mementos, then HUGH STARKEY.

Outside the SBH clubhouse, with DAVE BEDFORD possibly giving one of his memorable stories to both HUGH’S, with JOYCE and BRYAN SMITH in the background.

This a photograph HUGH RICHARDS sent me, which is the trophy he won in 1967, for winning the SBH points title.

CURRENT DISTRIBUTION OF SHAFTESBURY INFORMATION Currently I notify members (by email) using “MailChimp”. The reason I changed, was in November 2017 “Gmail” put a limit of 100 addresses that users could send to in a 24-hour period, and currently I send to approximately 850 members each issue.

On seeking technical advice “MailChimp” was recommended as the best way for SBH to go forward. There is one thing you should be aware off is that when you receive an email from me, the footer at the bottom has 4 options, of which one is “Unsubscribe Me From List”. Could I ask you not to select this as if you do you will be automatically removed from my distribution list.

WORLD INDOOR CHAMPIONSHIPS Took place in Belgrade, Serbia from 18-20 March.
SCOTT LINCOLN, who started the year off with an indoor Shot personal best of (20.73m) at the BoXX United Manchester World Indoor Tour, only managed (19.65m) and finished 16th out of a possible 17 places, in what was a difficult evening for the six-time British indoor champion.
RYAN CROUSER suffered his first defeat (22.44m) in the shot put in three years as Brazil’s DARLAN ROMANI, who claimed the first major medal of his career, took home a surprise World Indoor gold in a championship record of (22.53m). The last time CROUSER, the reigning Olympic shot put champion and world record-holder both indoors and out, lost an event was way back at the 2019 World Championships in Doha. Such a surprise loss speaks volumes of his recent dominance. The American holds four out of the top five indoor throws in history and was unbeaten in 32 outings heading into Belgrade. The bronze medal was won by TOM WALSH of New Zealand with (22.31m).

REQUEST FROM REBECCA JEGGO REBECCA joined Shaftesbury in 2017, and is an outstanding sprinter, having represented the club in the UK Youth Development League, UK Women’s League and the National Athletics League. Individually she won the British Indoor and Outdoor 200m bronze medals in 2020, and was also a finalist that year in the Indoor 60m and Outdoor 100m British Finals. In 2021 she won the 4x100m relay gold medal at the Manchester International representing England. This year in the 200m she won the Southern bronze medal, was a finalist in the British Championships, and a silver medallist in the BUCS Championships. REBECCA is currently ranked 200m UK No.7 U23 in 2022.

I am involved with the University of Essex project for UK track and field athletes (18+ years old) who are competing in the 2022 track season to complete a short online questionnaire which should take approximately 5 minutes before the start of the outdoor season. In addition to this, any athlete that completes the questionnaire will be contacted directly to fill out another 5-minute questionnaire at the mid-point (end of June) and then at the endpoint of the 2022 athletics season (early September) via email provided within the first questionnaire.
The project itself looks into how athlete burnout changes and influences performance across an athletics season. It is anticipated that the findings will provide the first evidence into understanding the extent that the mental health and wellbeing of an athlete may be tied to their performance. Once the study is completed, the findings will be distributed to all the athletes that participated. The results are likely to have direct implications for athlete performance, wellbeing, and career longevity. We anticipate this information will be useful to practitioners, coaches, and athletes when trying to raise awareness of athlete burnout in terms of how it develops and its consequences.

UPDATE FROM JAKE SHELLEY I just wanted to let you know that I’m sadly going to have to sit out the road relay season this Spring, from a running and team managing side of things. I’m just too busy, because my PhD is due at the end of April and my new job is quite full on as well. I’ve also had a sore knee since October, so I’m in no state to race. On top of all that, I’m also in the process of moving to Switzerland next month! I will miss being there this year, but hope to get back involved next time.

SHAFTESBURY FEATURE IN THE ELITE TOP TEN TEAMS The following was sent to me by GEOFF MORPHITIS, which was in the March edition of Athletics Weekly. Mind you (tongue in cheek), Arsenal ahead of us! Link for article – SBH – AW much loved athletics clubs

This is the link to the questionnaire study – https://bit.ly/33lZA1q

THE QUEEN’S BATON RELAY CELEBRATES COMMONWEALTH DAY IN NEW ZEALAND – The following article was published on the Athletics Weekly website recently.

The Birmingham 2022 Queen’s Baton Relay arrived in New Zealand on 12 March and spent four days travelling the nation, coinciding with Commonwealth Day on Monday 14 March. This year, Commonwealth Day was a celebration of “Delivering a Common Future” for all nations and territories in the Commonwealth by innovating, connecting, and transforming.

The Relay began on 7 October 2021 during a ceremony at Buckingham Palace, where The Queen placed Her Message to the Commonwealth into the Baton. In total, the Queen’s Baton will spend 294 days travelling to all 72 Commonwealth nations and territories, bringing together communities from across the globe in the run up to Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games. During the visit from the Queen’s Baton Relay, each Commonwealth Games Association organises an itinerary of activities, designed to showcase their local heroes and celebrate untold stories. Kicking off on Saturday 12 March, the activities in New Zealand included a sunrise pōwhiri to welcome the Baton at the peak of Kaiti Hill in Gisborne. A pōwhiri is a welcome ceremony that involves speeches, singing, and cultural performances. Continuing the Relay through Gisborne, Batonbearers paddled in a waka, a traditional Kiwi canoe, from Marina Park along the Tūranganui River to the mouth of the river, as members of the local community watched from the banks. Then the Baton was taken to Lawson Field Theatre Riverbank, where athletes MICHELLE RENNIE and MELLISSA LOUISE JONES were eagerly awaiting its arrival. The Baton then travelled south to Hawke’s Bay and visited Napier Basketball Court, where children of the community played basketball with athletes, including weightlifting champion and Commonwealth Games gold medallist, NIGEL AVERY and the most capped international netball player of all time, IRENE VAN DYK. The Baton was also taken to Pūkaha National Wildlife Centre, where the Baton was held in the sky, whilst the birds soared around it.

Exploring more of the country on Sunday 13 March, the Baton travelled to Wellington, the capital city of New Zealand. It visited the Basin Reserve Cricket Ground to witness the Australia vs New Zealand game, an ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup event, to celebrate the upcoming debut of Women’s T20 Cricket into the Commonwealth Games programme. KYLE PONTIFEX, member of the bronze medal winning hockey team at Delhi 2010 Commonwealth Games, carried the Baton around the grounds. That same day,The Right Honourable Prime Minister JACINDA ARDERN and The Honourable GRANT ROBERTSON interacted with the Queen’s Baton, learning about the intricate methods that were used to create the Baton in the West Midlands.

The following day, Monday 14 March, the Baton was present for Commonwealth Day celebrations at Wellington College, where athletes, including LEWIS CLAREBURTSALLY JOHNSTON, and KYLE PONTIFEX took part in a Q&A session for the students. Later that day, the Governor General, Rt Hon DAME CINDY KIRO, hosted a reception to celebrate Commonwealth Day and the Queen’s Baton Relay, guests included, NIGEL AVERY, President of the New Zealand Olympic Committee and former Olympic rower, MIKE STANLEY, as well as former President of the New Zealand Olympic Committee, KEREYN SMITH. The Baton’s final day in New Zealand started in former Commonwealth Games host city, Auckland, with a visit to MURRAY HALBERG Retirement Village, where athletes RICHIE PATTERSONALEXIS PRITCHARDEVE WILLIAMSON, and ETHAN MITCHELL carried the Baton with pride. With anticipation for Birmingham 2022 building, Team New Zealand announced their team selections for para-bowling and weightlifting. The day and Kiwi leg of the journey ended with a visit to Kolmar Recreation Centre, where athletes from around the Pacific Islands had the chance to carry the Baton.

LEWIS CLAREBURT, Batonbearer and swimming champion, said:“I feel honoured and delighted to have been given the opportunity to represent my home city, Wellington, in the Queen’s Baton Relay, and to inspire the students of Wellington College. I’m looking forward to watching the rest of the Relay in the run up to Birmingham 2022.”
MIKE STANLEY, President of New Zealand Olympic Committee, said: “It’s great to have the Queen’s Baton Relay in New Zealand as we build up to the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games. It’s very appropriate that the Relay is here for Commonwealth Day, and we’ve been using this moment to celebrate what the Commonwealth stands for, and the many communities and cultures that connect us. “Hosting the Relay has created a real buzz ahead of the Games, especially amongst our athletes. Excitement is building and the New Zealand Team can’t wait to get to Birmingham and show what we can do.”
LISA HAMPTON, Head of the Queen’s Baton Relay, said: “It has been incredible to experience New Zealand’s culture through the lens of the Queen’s Baton Relay and be able to share special moments, such as the ceremony of the pōwhiri, with communities in every corner of the Commonwealth. It allows so many to be educated on the powerful symbolism of these performances. “The Baton’s visit to New Zealand was made even more unique with Commonwealth Day festivities, to celebrate the communities and cultures within the Commonwealth.”
DAME LOUISE MARTIN, President of the Commonwealth Games Federation, said “Commonwealth Day is such a special moment for our 72 nations and territories. It is a chance for us to reflect on our shared objectives and special bond. A wonderful sunrise ceremony at the peak of Kaiti Hill in Gisborne is a fitting moment for the Queen’s Baton Relay, with New Zealand being one of the first time zones to welcome in Commonwealth Day. New Zealand will provide an amazing start to celebrations across the Commonwealth.”

The next destination along the Queen’s Baton Relay is Australia, host of Gold Coast 2018The Baton will spend four days there before beginning its journey through the Americas with visits to Belize and Guyana.

ATHLETES GET A TASTE OF “REVOLUTIONARY” ALEXANDER STADIUM – The following article was published on the Athletics Weekly website recently.

Stars of the past, present and future come together for Commonwealth Day celebrations at the Birmingham 2022 venue which is nearing completion. As proud members of Birchfield Harriers, SARAH MCDONALD and RHIANA BURRELL both know the club’s Alexander Stadium home better than most. They’ve never known it like this, however. To celebrate Commonwealth Day on Monday 14 March, a number of Birchfield’s stars of the past, present and future – as well as a number of local schoolchildren – got their first look inside a venue which has been completely transformed and is nearing completion as it prepares to host the athletics action at the Commonwealth Games in August. The stadium will house up to 30,000 spectators at each Games session, before reverting to a permanent capacity of around 18,000.

For 18-year-old multi-eventer BURRELL, the 2022 Games will come a little too soon. But, having watched the stadium transform before her eyes thanks to regular visits to the British Athletics High Performance Centre which forms part of the complex, she admitted that being able to step back on to the track – her “second home” – was inspirational as she instead sets her sights on selection for 2026.Alexander Stadium is almost complete (Birmingham 2022). “I’ve trained on the track since I was 12 so this means a lot,” said the teenager who was born and brought up in Birmingham and recently finished fifth in the high jump at the UK Indoor Championships. “I basically live on the track – it’s like a second home – so the change in the facilities is going to be revolutionary. “I saw when the [old] Nelson and Knowles Stands got knocked down and I was quite sad about that and, because I’ve been training quite a lot at the High Performance Centre, I’ve seen it only from the outside. But, to get a look inside now… it doesn’t disappoint. “It’s accelerated my drive, I’d say. It makes me want to be better and train harder.”

For MCDONALD, 1500m finalist at the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games, it was her first visit back to the Alexander Stadium since the British Championships of 2019. “It’s unrecognisable,” said the 28-year-old. “I haven’t seen it in progress at all so it was good to see the before and after. [The Games] still feel a long way away right now but it’s really good to be here and to visualise it.”to R) Sarah McDonald, Rhiana Burrell and former world indoor champion Ashia Being selected for England at Birmingham 2022, as well as securing a place on the British team bound for the World Championships in Eugene, is at the top of MCDONALD’S priority list for the year ahead. Having recently made the move to join the Boston-based New Balance training group under coach MARK COOGAN, and back to full health after injury problems, inspiration is not in short supply for her, either. “There are a lot of really great girls in that group to help me push on and I’m really glad that I made the change,” she said of her new set-up. “I think the Commonwealth Games and the World Championships are huge so they’ll be my priority to try to qualify for and make the team.”

MONDO DUPLANTIS BREAKS OWN POLE VAULT RECORD – The following article was published on the Athletics Weekly website recently.

MONDO DUPLANTIS finally broke his own pole vault world record after clearing (6.19m) at the Belgrade Indoor Meeting –  a World Indoor Tour silver event – in the same city which hosts the World Indoor Championships in just under a fortnight. The 22-year-old Olympic and European champion set the previous record of (6.18m) at the Müller Indoor Grand Prix in Glasgow two years ago and it wasn’t a surprise to see him better that height in the Serbian capital. “I think I’ve tried (6.19m) 50 times,” Duplantis told World Athletics. “It’s been a long time coming. I’ve never had a height that has given me that much trouble and I’ve been jumping for a very long time. It’s a very good feeling because it’s been really hard fought over these past two years to try and get over that next barrier. “I don’t think this is the highest that I’m ever going to jump. There’s going to be a lot more to come. This [Belgrade] is a really good place to jump for championships and I’m going to try and put something else higher up there. “A height like (6.19m) demands perfection and all the numbers have to be perfect. I just figured it out on that last attempt! I’m buzzing to finally get over it.” For weeks he has threatened to clear (6.19m) but every time the bar agonisingly fell. At ISTAF Indoor Berlin on 4 February, the organisers actually set the pyro off because they thought that DUPLANTIS had broken the world record. Unfortunately, he knocked the bar on the way down and he would have to wait.

DUPLANTIS, who has already become world indoor tour champion for 2022, has had an incredible start to the year and has so far cleared (6.02m, 6.03m, 6.04m, 6.05m and now 6.19m). Only 14 men have cleared (6.00m) indoors and the Swede has now recorded heights of (6.17m, 6.18m and 6.19m). Breaking his own world record was quite frankly more when than if. DUPLANTIS now sets his eyes on becoming world indoor champion in Belgrade later this month and he’ll go into the event as the overwhelming favourite. It’s safe to say the Swede has more chance of breaking his own world record and clearing (6.20m) than failing to strike gold and that just emphasises the impact he has made in pole vault. So make athletics more presentable and fun.”

£100k OF FUNDING NEEDED TO SAVE ENGLISH SCHOOLS TRACK AND FIELD CHAMPIONSHIPS – The following article was published on the Athletics Weekly website recently.

DALEY THOMPSON is one of the most decorated British athletes in history. He has become Olympic decathlon champion twice, was world champion at Helsinki 1983 and is also a two-time European and three-time Commonwealth champion.
Like so many others before and after him, THOMPSON started out at the English Schools Championships and in 1974 came fourth in the inter boys 200m before going on to win the 200m a year later. This was before he decided to do the decathlon, which is rather remarkable given the then 17-year-old finished 18th in the event at the Montreal Olympics in 1976.
Two weeks ago THOMPSON came out in support of English Schools Athletic Association (ESAA) – given the organisation may not make its centenary year in 2025 due to financial struggles after New Balance chose not to renew their sponsorship agreement – after they set up a crowdfunding page to raise £100k to fund this year’s Track and Field Championships.
He tweeted: “Save the ESAA Track & Field Championships. This is the greatest athletics championship in the world.
“Sorry Olympics but you are a close second. They [ESAA] are only three years off being 100! They are also the first port of call for aspiring Olympians. Your tenner will help.”
Now, in an exclusive interview with AW, the double Olympic decathlon champion reiterates his support for the organisation.

“When I was young and growing up everyone wanted to go to the English Schools and win it,” THOMPSON said. “It was absolutely and utterly the biggest competition in the whole world for us. I think it holds a very special place in people’s hearts.
“I think it would be a huge loss to athletics and to the foundations of sport. It really is, or at least it used to be, the place to go. Anybody in our sport has either gone there or attempted to go there.
“I was looking at the previous winners of English Schools that have gone on to the Olympics and the list was endless so that was really good to note that they’d started their journey at English Schools. It’s the beginning for everybody.”

In total, 135 English Schools athletes have won European Championship medals, 35 of them gold while 278 have collected medals at British Empire or Commonwealth Games, of which 81 have claimed gold.
The ESAA has produced 14 Olympic champions and 77 medallists, with Sir Mo Farah the most recent, as well as 71 World Championship medals, of which 13 were gold, the most recent including DINA ASHER-SMITH and KATARINA JOHNSON-THOMPSON in 2019.
One athlete who helped inspire DALEY THOMPSON in his younger days was European 100m bronze medallist and 60m champion ANDREA LYNCH, who herself won the English Schools 100m title in 1970 and 200m title in 1971.

On seeking technical advice “MailChimp” was recommended as the best way for SBH to go forward. There is one thing you should be aware off is that when you receive an email from me, the footer at the bottom has 4 options, of which one is “Unsubscribe Me From List”.
