CURRENT DISTRIBUTION OF SHAFTESBURY INFORMATION Currently I notify members (by email) using “MailChimp”. The reason I changed, was in November last year “Gmail” put a limit of 100 addresses that users could send to in a 24-hour period, and currently I send to approximately 850 members each issue.

On seeking technical advice “MailChimp” was recommended as the best way for SBH to go forward. There is one thing you should be aware off is that when you receive an email from me, the footer at the bottom has 4 options, of which one is “Unsubscribe Me From List”. Could I ask you not to select this as if you do you will be automatically removed from my distribution list.

JON BIGG outlines his reasons for loving what can be a very difficult job
Who’d be a coach? As UK Coaching Week has highlighted, there are plenty of great coaches out there doing amazing work – but it’s undoubtedly a tough gig.
Picture this scenario, for example, and consider how you would deal with it. Two athletes from your training group are involved in a big race, both looking to make their mark in a crucial part of the season. One crosses the line absolutely delighted, having smashed their target and realised their ambition while the other finds themselves in a pit of despair after falling short.
Who do you speak to first? Do you console the dejected figure or share in the celebrations of the other? It’s a very tricky and fine line for a coach to tread and just one facet of the multi-tasking which the job entails.
Just such a scenario may well in fact confront JON BIGG (pictured, inset) at the upcoming British Championships, where there will be national titles and European Championships places at stake.

“This game is very, very hard and there’s nowhere to hide, is there? When it goes wrong, it’s just there, right in your face” Yet dealing with that emotional investment and the pursuit of an athlete’s continuing personal development, is one of the reasons which keeps him coming back for more.

“You’ve got two people walking towards you – one that’s just smashed it and made the team and another where the world has just ended in their own head,” says BIGG, who coaches a wide range of athletes which includes the likes of KYLE LANGFORD, ELLIOT GILES and SHELAYNA OSKAN-CLARKE. “Inside you are exhilarated and happy for the ones who have just done well but your focus and attention probably has to go to the ones who have struggled and they are standing in the warm-up area going ‘what went wrong?’, wanting answers and reasons for what they’ve just experienced.

“Although it’s only running, it’s only one foot in front of the other and all of those things you can say, it means a huge amount to these guys and they put in a huge amount of work. “This game is very, very hard and there’s nowhere to hide, is there? When it goes wrong, it’s just there, right in your face. “It’s difficult to manage and difficult to handle for them and that’s the bit that makes the job difficult but, at the same time, when they get it right it’s just beautiful to watch someone deliver what you’ve seen they’d be capable of and then see how excited they are about that.” As a former international 800m athlete, and the husband of hurdling great SALLY GUNNELL, BIGG knows all too well the heightened emotions which are at play when the pressure is on. Some of that, of course, is also felt by the coach.

“We probably all would say ‘this is hard work and we’re all a bit on edge’ but it’s that bit… that’s why I do it,” he adds. “I quite like that feeling. “You can feel the adrenalin going round the system and it’s because you just so badly want them to achieve what you know they can do, to see them happy and to see them move on as people to that next level” “I remember that feeling of adrenalin when I used to race and I think this is probably as close as I can get to it. “I know it’s not everybody’s cup of tea but I do quite like that feeling of having put somebody in the call room and you’re wandering out to the track thinking ‘this is it!’. “The heart starts to elevate a little bit, the adrenalin starts to pump around the system – and it’s all just because you want your athlete to achieve what you think they can. “Having seen Sally go through everything she did – it’s never going to be as nerve-wracking as seeing your partner compete at an Olympics – but you can feel the adrenalin going round the system and it’s because you just so badly want them to achieve what you know they can do, to see them happy and to see them move on as people to that next level. That’s what you are looking for and hoping for.

UK WOMEN’S LEAGUE DIVISION 1 AND BRITISH ATHLETICS LEAGUE PREMIERSHIP – This was a double header in which our Men and Women competed in Cardiff on 2 June.

I had the pleasure of being at Cardiff and witnessing a tremendous team performance from both our Men and Women, and GEOFF MORPHITIS comment following the first BAL match “where only a top 2 finish will be good enough”, proved to be spot on. With the Women’s team finishing runners-up to the home club Cardiff, and the Men finishing runners-up to a very strong Birchfield Harriers.

Women’s Team Result – 1st Cardiff (207 points), 2nd SBH (187), 3rd Woodford Green with Essex Ladies (174), 4th Notts (150), 5th Harrow (145), 6th Crawley (138), 7th Sale Harriers (137), 8th Enfield & Haringey (126).

Men’s Team Result – 1st Birchfield Harriers (337 points), 2nd SBH (308), 3rd Woodford Green with Essex Ladies (299), 4th City of Sheffield & Dearne (273.5), 5th Newham & Essex Beagles (272.5), 6th Cardiff (264.5), 7th Thames Valley Harriers (226.5), 8th Swansea (213).

Men’s Standing After 2 Fixtures – 1st Birchfield Harriers (682 event points – 16 league points), 2nd City of Sheffield & Dearne (591.5 – 12), 3rd SBH (567 – 12), 4th Woodford Green with Essex Ladies (545 – 9), 5th Cardiff (544.5 – 9), 6th Newham & Essex Beagles (514.5 – 6), 7th Thames Valley Harriers (476.5 – 6), 8th Swansea (449 – 2).

The Women’s match was very close for most of the day, the sprinters did very well with PAGE FAIRCLOUGH a close 4th in the 100m “A” and new member JESSICA HUNTER 2nd in the “B” string with a PB. In the 200m LILY BECKFORD finished 3rd in the “A” race with a personal best and was ably supported by new member SELINA HENDERSON in the “B” string. The 400m featured SABRINA BAKARE in the “A” race who looked very solid with a season best for 3rd place, PHILLIPA LOWE had an emphatic win in the “B” string, and is returning to her best form following last year’s injury.

NAOMI TASCHIMOWITZ doubled up in the 1500m/3000m, firstly winning the 3000m by some 13 seconds, and was very ably supported by VICTORIA WALKER finishing 2nd in the “B” string. In the 1500m NAOMI fought all the way and almost caught the Cardiff winner on the line, new member RHIANNON DUNLOP had an impressive debut finishing 3rd in the “B” race.

The highlight of the hurdles was the performance of JESSICA HUNTER in winning the 100m H and ably supported by debutant SOPHIA OBI U20 in the “B” string. The 400m hurdles featured another new member HAYLEY MCLEAN finishing 3rd, while in the “B” string PHILLIPA AUKETT volunteered to collect the point and attacked the hurdles with gusto.

In the high jump, we had new Scots members CLAIRE MCGARVEY U20 and AMY GULLEN. In the “A” string CLAIRE finished 4th just failing a personal best 1.70m, and AMY was 2nd in the “B” string. There were excellent points from EMMA ANDERSSON and ALEXA EICHELMANN U20 in the pole vault.

The jumps saw KAYANNA REID double up, winning the triple jump and achieving a personal best in the long jump, with CLAIRE MCGARVEY also doubling took valuable points in the “B” string.

In the throws KAYOMIE THOMPSON in her first competition for some time yet finished 2nd in the discus “B” string as well stepping in to cover the hammer and javelin. SHADINE DUQUEMIN also doubled up, firstly finishing 2nd in the discus “A” string and then 2nd in the shot “B” string. The revelation in the shot was the massive PB by GEMMA BENNETT our injured international high hurdler. LOUISA PITSIALIS U20 achieved a 2nd place in the “B” string hammer.

The final event of the day was the 4x400m relay, and squad of PHILLIPA LOWE, TARA KAFKE, SABRINA BAKARE and LILY BECKFORD ran (3:39.62) which is a new UKWAL Division 1 record taking 1.03 seconds off the previous record.

For most of the day the Men’s team had their noses in front, until the final few events when Birchfield came through. The sprinters did very well with CONFIDENCE LAWSON with 2nd in the 100m and 200m “A”, with ZANSON PLUMMER finishing 3rd in the 100m “B”. In the 400m SAM HAZEL and MATTHEW PAGAN were 3rd and 5th respectively.

The jumps were the highlight of the day for us, in the high jump ALLAN SMITH won with 2.13m and in the “B” AKIN COWARD achieved a good 2nd place. Whilst our 2 pole vaulters, ETHAN WALSH and ROSS HAJIPANAYI finished 4th and 2nd in the “A” and “B” competitions.

SBH PRIVACY STATEMENT – In becoming a member, SBH will collect certain information about you. Can you please read the attached ‘Privacy Statement’ which contains Information on General Data Protection Regulations  SBH Privacy Statement Final April 2018
