128TH SBH ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING Took place on Tuesday 27 November in the Fez Bar, East Stand, Allianz Park.
On an atrocious evening of persistent rain, the meeting commenced with some 120 members present, made up of our Coaches, Athletes, Officials and Parents.

The opening address was by Club Chairman TONY SUNDERLAND with apologies for absence, followed by the proposal and seconding of the 2017 AGM minutes. It was noted that there were no matters arising.

General Secretary PHILIP CUNNINGHAM then gave a summary of the Annual Report for the year ended 30 September 2018. He emphasised what a tremendous year it had been for the club with a record number of Club Records, also our successes especially from our Young Athletes was awesome with many of them being ranked in the UK top ten. The Annual Report makes an excellent read

Treasurer GEOFF MORPHITIS gave a detailed report of the Club Accounts which overall disclosed a healthy profit, but emphasized that we cannot rely on London Marathon for future revenue. This being the case GEOFF had carried a review of club subscriptions of other large T&F clubs and found that our annual subscription was substantially cheaper than all the other comparable clubs. It was then proposed that from 1 December 2018 that subscriptions should increase by £10 to £45, this was proposed and seconded with no objections.
The list of Club Officers was proposed and seconded en-bloc. GEOFF pointed out that there are 3 vacancies on the Club Council, which meets 3-4 times a year. If any athlete or parent is interested please contact GEOFF, all you will be required to do is to attend the meetings, normally on a Monday evening and give your opinion.

TONY SUNDERLAND then covered the remaining items on the agenda, firstly Election of Vice Presidents the list was proposed and seconded. Next was the existing rule 7 of the constitution to be removed with immediate effect, as the England Athletics process for complying with the new UKA Rule for changing clubs had effectively made the existing Rule 7 redundant, this was proposed and seconded.
The Club has been operating with an “Executive” with delegated powers for the “Officers” which are the Chairman, General Secretary and Treasurer with Bryan Smith co-opted.  Bryan wishes to stand down and it was proposed that Dave Bedford would be co-opted in his place.  It was noted that Dave is a non-exec. member of the UKA board.  This was agreed, and it was agreed that the “Executive” be formally added to the Club Constitution at the AGM.
Proposal – The new Rule 9 shall read as follows.
‘The Council shall have the power to co-opt members at their discretion.  The Council shall also have the power to appoint an Executive Committee to address any urgent issues arising between Council meetings and to make decisions on behalf of the Council.  The Executive Committee shall comprise of the Chairman, the General Secretary and the Treasurer together with such co-opted members as nominated by the Council.  The Chairman will report back at the next Council meeting.’  Proposed and seconded.

Following the conclusion of the AGM, the presentation of the 2017-2018 cross country and the 2018 T&F season awards took place. It was indeed a pleasure to present the awards to all winners, after writing about them week in, week out. GEOFF MORPHITIS gave an introduction to all winner’s achievements throughout the past year.

There were 2 special awards presented. PHILIP CUNNINGHAM gave a heart-warming introduction on them. Firstly, to TONY SMITH whose dedication to the club is second to none. TONY joined the club in 1973, and then in 1981 took on the role of Young Athletes Manager cross country and road relays, which with success after success handed over the reins in 2016. Although he still an ever present at all fixtures. On a personal note, TONY has been such a great help to me since I took on the role of the Newsletter editor, although on numerous occasions when I rang him, his wife JEAN answered, would tell me what the true TONY was really like (I think that is for another day, although I will not mention those pyjamas).

Last but not least Mr & Mrs Shaftesbury, JOYCE and BRYAN SMITH who have both been members of Shaftesbury since 1954. JOYCE MBE is one of the clubs most accomplished athletes winning the first two London Marathons, also she competed in the 1972 Munich and 1984 Los Angeles Olympic Games where she finished 11th in the Marathon at the age of nearly 47. Bryan is one of the most respected coaches in England, and many of our athletes have progressed no end under his guidance. His organisation skills are exceptional and were recognised by his Directorships at both London Marathon and UK Athletics. In recent years, they have both been the driving force as Team Managers behind our successful Girls’ team in the EYAL.

To conclude the evening a video was played on the big screen of the Club Connect relays which took place in the London Stadium. The Under 15 Boys team of CHIMA ONUORA, REMI JOKOSENUMI, NICHOLAS SAVVA and KOFI OWUSU produced a time of (44.06) which was a British Club record and UK No.1 all-time club team.

A big thank you to FIONA GROOM who managed the collection and ordering of the SBH trophies, and her help at the AGM. Also KENNY GROOM for an excellent set of photographs, which I will publish next week, probably on the SBH website

Thanks to JOHNSON OGUNNIYI who sent me a collection of photographs he took at the AGM, please view them – https://photos.google.com/share/AF1QipMc3F_am1DcSNTdKe8No7n9P1ihWv-3Minabn3GSMLVEECUu4Xo8K-U0u2pwCfagA?key=cWk2RzFkanBKdmlPMUZjZG1PNVh3Mmh3YWpic2N3

WELCOME TO VALHALLA In March the Danish city of Aarhus is poised to stage the toughest and most imaginative IAAF World Cross Country Championships in history
For cross-country traditionalists who enjoy mud and hills, the next World Championships in Aarhus will not disappoint. Such is the gruelling and picturesque nature of the terrain, athletes and fans will think they have arrived in heaven. Or, as the Vikings would say, Valhalla.

The March 30 event is being held in Viking territory, with the centrepiece of the venue being the Moesgaard Museum – which is full of historical artefacts from Denmark’s rich and rugged past.
Elite runners in the championship races – plus young athletes in schools and club events and recreational runners in a special mass race – will charge up and down the steep, grassy roof of the museum.
Elsewhere, they will face challenges such as a mud pit, sand pit and water splash, while also running through tented spectator zones where cheers and music might, if they’re lucky, take their minds briefly off the pain on a course that is relentlessly unforgiving and does not involve a single stretch of flat ground.

ATHLETICS WEEKLY READERS CHOICE AWARDS 2018 – Have your say and cast your votes for the stand-out athletes of the year, voting close 12 December.

CURRENT DISTRIBUTION OF SHAFTESBURY INFORMATION Currently I notify members (by email) using “MailChimp”. The reason I changed, was in November last year “Gmail” put a limit of 100 addresses that users could send to in a 24-hour period, and currently I send to approximately 850 members each issue.

On seeking technical advice “MailChimp” was recommended as the best way for SBH to go forward. There is one thing you should be aware off is that when you receive an email from me, the footer at the bottom has 4 options, of which one is “Unsubscribe Me From List”. Could I ask you not to select this as if you do you will be automatically removed from my distribution list.

HOME OF ENGLISH CROSS COUNTRY RELAYS UNDER THREAT – A petition against the closure of Mansfield’s Berry Hill Park has gained thousands of signatures as people seek to save what has become the home of the Saucony English Cross Country Relays.

The popular early winter meeting was staged this year at Berry Hill Park for the 30th consecutive year, but the Nottinghamshire market town park’s gates could be shut for good following an announcement from its trustees that they can no longer afford its upkeep.
A petition to stop the closure, which was started by GRAEME BAGULEY three days ago, has been signed more than 6000 times and comes after hundreds of people took part in a demonstration over the weekend.
IAN BYETT, secretary of the English Cross Country Association (ECCA), says he remains confident that a solution can be found, however.
“We are aware of the situation at Berry Hill Park and we are pleased that the trustees of the park waited until after this year’s Saucony English Cross Country Relays to announce that the park would be closed,” he told Athletics Weekly.
“The Relays have been staged at Berry Hill for 30 years and if the decision to close the park was confirmed then the ECCA would have to find a new home for the event next year, which is scheduled to be on November 2.
“However, we are optimistic that with the local MP BEN BRADLEY now involved and everybody wanting to find a way of keeping the park open, that a meeting on November 22 between representatives of the park’s trustees and Mansfield District Council will start the process to find the funds to maintain the park and get it reopened.
“Obviously, the park cannot be left to go wild and planning permission for any building on it is very unlikely so I am confident a solution can be found.”
The grass and woodland park includes an athletics track, football pitch, cafe and playground.

LONG JUMP’S GOLDEN ERA – Tokyo’s old Olympic stadium; the scene of long jump’s finest moment.

If ever there was a moment that epitomised the phrase ‘hold my beer’, this was probably it.
In 1991, at the World Championships in Tokyo, the world was bearing witness to one of the greatest clashes ever to take place in athletics. The long jump world record was broken twice in one evening as two all-time greats of the sport, MIKE POWELL and CARL LEWIS kept on pushing each other to the limit.
It all culminated in what was undoubtedly POWELL’S greatest moment, when he jumped a world record of 8.95m and characterised both his and the event’s greatest moment in history.
At the time, an unbeaten CARL LEWIS was aiming to add to his already bulging medal haul. Six gold medals in both the Olympics and World Championships made him the main man across the long jump and the sprints.

But that evening at the Olympic Stadium, Lewis faced the hardest ever fight in his career when he came up against his American compatriot MIKE POWELL.

The rivalry between them is often considered one of the greatest in the sport’s history. But prior to the World Championships in Tokyo it had only been about LEWIS. 15 times the two had met and 15 times Lewis had won.
But of course, POWELL arrived with sheer hunger to finally come out on top against the man who was considered to be the ultimate all-round athlete. That evening POWELL was, in his own words, “a man possessed”. His obsession with beating LEWIS simply knew no bounds and was what kept on pushing him.
For LEWIS, the world record had become his obsession. His ten-year unbeaten record and Olympic golds left him with just one task before he completed the puzzle. It had been 23 years since BOB BEAMON’S furthest ever 8.90m jump. However, when LEWIS and POWELL met in Japan, there was a feeling that the long held record was about to reach its end.
But to this day, it is not the record that remains the proudest factor for Mike Powell. For him, the record was merely just a bonus that came on the side of toppling CARL LEWIS for a major international gold.
POWELL always insists that, no matter what LEWIS had done that evening, he was destined to come out on top. “Had CARL jumped 9 metres, I would have done 9.01. “says POWELL,  “I knew in my heart CARL wasn’t invincible and I had to prove it to the world…call it vanity, call it ego, it had to happen.”
With the competition reaching the fourth round, LEWIS was leading the way and first to jump before Powell.
Then with his fourth effort he stormed to a staggering 8.91m jump that, despite being too windy to be the world record, still stood on the evening and left POWELL needing to reach a distance he never had before.
It looked like it may have been a jump to far for POWELL, with his fourth-round effort ending in a foul.
But with his very next go, everything seemed to fall into place. After all the years of trying, POWELL got every small factor right in just that one jump, which propelled him out of the runway and into an all-new dimension.
Then, when he finally came back down and waited for the result to be read, the shackles that had gripped him tighter and tighter each year were suddenly shattered into a million pieces. The board now read 8.95m, a new world record and one that, despite all of LEWIS’ sheer athletic prowess, was simply too good for him to beat.
POWELL had broken all sorts of barriers. He had won his first major gold medal, jumped further than ever before and broken the world record.
However, as he begins to celebrate his 55th birthday this week and looks back at what was undoubtedly his finest moment in the sport, all these factors will probably take a back seat.
His main aim all along was purely to beat the man who, for a decade, had seemed unbeatable.
This moment was not only POWELL’S greatest, but the greatest for the discipline itself. Never before had two men battled it out at such a level and it is hugely unlikely that the event, or perhaps even the sport, will witness a rivalry that has pushed both competitors to such levels.

Having started off her athletics career as a high jumper with a personal best (1.88m current club record) she soon switched to the 400mm where she made rapid progression. In 2002, LEE won individual medals at the Commonwealth Games and European Championships over 400m, and was fourth in the World Cup, setting a lifetime best of (50.82 current club record). The following season LEE enhanced her reputation as being a championship performer by reaching the final at the World Championships in Paris, placing seventh.

After reaching the semi-finals at the 2004 Olympic Games, LEE decided to switch to the 400m hurdles but despite having the potential to be a world-class exponent at that discipline, the switch did not fully materialise but she did win a Commonwealth bronze medal, setting a lifetime best of (55.25). LEE remained an invaluable member of the British 4x400m, greatly contributing to successive bronze medal winning performances at the World Championships but was not fit for the Olympic Games 4x400m relay in Beijing, having to withdraw through injury.

2009 started off well for her, but injury curtailed her performances and although a member of the 4x400m relay squad at the World Championships it was not until her last race of the season in the Shanghai Grand Prix that LEE managed to run somewhere near her potential with a season’s best of (51.45). 2010 started brightly with a convincing win in the European Championships Trials at Birmingham, but a below-par run in the championships in Barcelona where she finished in fourth place in her heat and was also just outside of the medals at the Commonwealth Games in Delhi.

IAAF REVISES DOHA 2019 QUALIFICATION SYSTEM – The new IAAF world rankings system will not be used to qualify athletes for next year’s World Championships in Doha, the global governing body has announced.

Instead, the existing process of entry standards will be used while the period of consultation for the new points-based system is extended.
“The IAAF’s primary concern, as always, is for the athletes. So while uncertainty remains in the points-based process the IAAF will extend the period of consultation.
“To do this without impacting the training regimes and preparations in advance of the IAAF World Championships next year, the IAAF Council agreed to stick with the existing qualification system.”
The new world rankings system will still be introduced as planned for the 2019 season to give athletes and federations the opportunity to follow the system in real time and become more familiar with the process before it becomes the primary qualifying route for major championships.
IAAF president SEB COE said: “We believe strongly that the World Rankings is the best way for athletes to qualify for our major championships in future. Implementing change takes time as it is important our athletes and federations fully understand what is a complex system. We want to give the sport the opportunity to see the World Rankings in action and understand how they will work before we introduce the new system in full.
“We think sticking with the existing qualification system is the best solution for Doha because it gives our athletes, coaches and member federations the certainty they need at this point to prepare for the world championships. We trust that once everyone understands the World Rankings system they will be confident about its introduction as the qualification system for future championships.”

START FITNESS METROPOLITAN LEAGUE – The second fixture of five takes place this Saturday 10 November at Stanborough Park, Welwyn Garden City, Hertfordshire (SatNav AL8 6DF). I am confident we can better our excellent turnout/success at Claybury last month, this is also the 2nd race in the Winter Cross Country Points series.
See Upcoming Fixtures below for full details, there is a minor change of start times for the U11/U13 Girls and U15/U17 Womens races. NATIONAL CROSS COUNTRY RELAY CHAMPIONSHIPS – Took place on Saturday 3 November at Mansfield.
The course and weather was excellent, as were our results. Congratulations on a splendid turnout throughout the age-groups with the Under 17 Women fielding 3 teams.

Our Under 17 Men carried on their successes of the past 6 weeks, where they finished 6th and 3rd respectively in the Southern/National road relays, and 2 weeks ago won the Southern/ cross country relays. At Mansfield, the team of FINN HARVEY, DAVID STONE and KRISTIAN IMROTH finished strongly to secure the bronze medals, after a solid start from FINN, DAVID ran the 4th fastest time of the day (It is actually 2nd as Leg 1 is shorter than the remaining Legs, around 8 seconds) moving the team up to 4th place leaving KRISTIAN to catch and pass Leeds City for National bronze medals.

The Under 17 Men’s race video link is https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AmJIistUmuM

IAAF DIAMOND LEAGUE REVEALS ROAD TO THE 2019 FINALS – The following article was published on the Athletics Weekly website recently.

The IAAF has announced the distribution of Diamond League disciplines for the 2019 season, confirming where and when athletes will contest each event in the 14-meet series.
The 10th season of the series will again commence in Doha, Qatar, on May 3, with the 32 Diamond League event disciplines spread across the 14 meetings.
Athletes earn points in the first 12 meetings to qualify for the finals where, as in a championship, the performance of athletes in the final alone will determine who the champion will be.
At the two final meetings, held in Zurich on August 29 and Brussels on September 6, $100,000 will be at stake in each of the 32 disciplines, including $50,000 for each winner plus a Diamond Trophy.
The first meeting in Doha will include both the men’s and women’s 200m and 800m events, plus the men’s 1500m and women’s 3000m. The women’s 100m hurdles, 400m hurdles, high jump and long jump will also feature, along with the men’s 3000m steeplechase, pole vault, shot put and discus.
In total, some Diamond League event disciplines will feature at six meetings before the final, while others will feature at four.
For example, the men’s 100m will be held in Shanghai, Oslo, Eugene, Monaco, London and Birmingham before the final in Zurich. In the women’s 1500m, athletes will be able to pick up points in Shanghai, Rome, Rabat, Monaco, London and Birmingham as they also compete for a place in the Zurich final.
The men’s long jump is included in the event programmes for meetings in Shanghai, Stockholm, Rabat and Lausanne, while the women’s javelin will feature at Shanghai, Rome, Lausanne and
London

DINA ASHER-SMITH LAUNCHES COACHING CAMPAIGN – Featured on the Athletics Weekly website. British 100m and 200m record-holder DINA ASHER-SMITH has launched a new England Athletics #gocoach campaign which aims to bring 10,000 new people into the world of athletics and running coaching by 2020.

Link to video of DINA talking about coaching – https://youtu.be/4MPVINwe-SI

Having trained with the same coach, JOHN BLACKIE, since she was a nine-year-old at Blackheath & Bromley Harriers AC, DINA is someone who understands the importance of great coaches in the sport.
“The relationship between any coach and athlete, whether at elite or beginner level, is pivotal in enabling you to be the best version of yourself both on and off the track,” she says.
“The launch of #gocoach is a great reminder of all the hard work and support that coaches and run leaders provide – often voluntarily – to help others.
“I hope the campaign will inspire people of all ages and backgrounds to think about becoming a coach or run leader. Our fantastic sport wouldn’t survive without them.”

England Athletics believes that there can be a misconception that individuals must have a sporting background to become a coach, and while for many people it is a way of widening their enthusiasm for sport, people of all ages, backgrounds and aspirations can get involved.
Blackie adds: “Being a coach is incredibly rewarding. Not only are you able to share achievements, but you’re also there to support and motivate during any low moments.
“I’ve been lucky enough to work with DINA for 14 years now, and share her journey to being the fastest British woman in history. The joys of coaching don’t just apply to working with elite athletes though; being a volunteer coach or leader is an extremely worthwhile role.
“I would encourage everyone to get involved.”
RUTH WORTHINGTON, a volunteer coach at Bury Athletics Club, says: “My daughter showed an interest in athletics when she was eight and I would take her to our local track and sit in the car reading a book whilst she trained.
“In the run-up to the London Olympics, the club was becoming busier and the under-11 coach asked for some help from parents. I wasn’t sure what I could do but I stepped forward.
“It’s been really empowering as a woman to get involved in athletics and coaching. There’s loads of help and support out there to get you started and it really does make you feel good about yourself.”

GLASGOW 2019 MASCOT – Scottee the Scottie dog has been unveiled as the new face of next year’s European Athletics Indoor Championships. British middle-distance star and newly-qualified vet LAURA MUIR helped to unveil ‘Scottee’ the Scottie dog as the new face of next year’s European Athletics Indoor Championships in Glasgow.

The pair surprised his creator – Crookston Castle Primary School pupil RACHAEL JOSS – with a visit as she was named winner of a mascot design competition for local schools.
LAURA helped a panel to select the winning design and felt the Scottie dog was best suited to fulfil the role.
“It was an absolute pleasure to be involved in the selection process and help chose the winning mascot design,” said the double European indoor champion.
SCOTTEE was a favourite from the very start and RACHAEL’S design was amazing. To see him today is fantastic, and is very proud to have played a big part!”
Next year’s event takes place from March 1-3 and after a summer which included winning European 1500m gold and the Diamond League title, MUIR now has her sights set on defending either her 1500m or 3000m crown on home soil.
