RESULTS
Just to clarify, that the results I publish can be different to those that are shown on the Power of 10. The differences relate to seasons and personal best performances. For example in the recent EYAL results, an athlete in the 200m ran (24.1), and on his profile his season’s best was shown as (23.88) indoors. As the 200m indoors and outdoors are totally different type of events, I had shown the (24.1) as a season’s best.
The Power of 10 publishes separate UK rankings for indoor and outdoor performances.

ELIUD KIPCOGE SELECTED FOR FIFTH OLYMPICS  The following article was published on the Athletics Weekly website recently.

The double Olympic marathon champion will have the chance to make history in Paris. ELIUD KIPCHOGE has the opportunity to become the first marathon runner in history to win three Olympic gold medals, after being picked for the team by Athletics Kenya and the National Olympics Committee of Kenya. The 39-year-old Kenyan, who became Olympic marathon champion at both Rio 2016 and Tokyo 2020, is currently tied on two golds with ABEBE BIKILA (1960 and 1964) and WALDEMAR CIERPINSKI (1976 and 1980). No athlete has ever claimed three Olympic titles over 26.2 miles and KIPCHOGE now has the chance to stand alone at Paris 2024. “I always say the Olympic dream is a special dream,” KIPCHOGE said on his Instagram. “The Olympic Games is what we all dream of as little kids starting out with our sport and is what motivates us the most today. “I am beyond proud to be selected for the Kenyan team for the fifth time in my life. After winning the marathon gold medal in Rio de Janeiro and Tokyo, my focus will now be on Paris!”

As well as two Olympic golds in the marathon, KIPCHOGE also boasts a couple of track medals. At his first Games – Athens 2004 – a 20-year-old KIPCHOGE finished behind HICHAM EL GUERROUJI and KENENISA BEKELE over 5000m. Then, at Beijing 2008, the Kenyan finished behind BEKELE again in the 5000m, this time claiming a silver medal. A seventh-place finish in the Kenyan 5000m trial meant that KIPCHOGE failed to qualify for London 2012. He then of course switched to the marathon and the rest was history. KIPCHOGE held the world marathon record on two different occasions, over a five year period. At the 2018 Berlin Marathon, he broke DENNIS KIMETTO’S best mark of (2:02:57) with a stunning (2:01:39). Four years later in the German capital, KIPCHOGE lowered his own time by 30 seconds to (2:01:09).

It took a masterful run from the late KELVIN KIPTUM – a (2:00:35) at the Chicago Marathon – to dethrone KIPCHOGE at the top of the all-time list. Between 2014 and 2019, KIPCHOGE won all 10 marathons he entered but the Kenyan has recently struggled to replicate that perfect form. The double Olympic champion won in Berlin last September but finished sixth at last year’s Boston Marathon and then placed tenth at this season’s Tokyo Marathon, the latter being his worst result over 26.2 miles. Two domestic challengers KIPCHOGE will face in Paris will be BENSON KIPRUTO and ALEX MUTISO. KIPRUTO is a triple major marathon winner, having claimed victory in Boston in 2021, Chicago in 2022 and in Tokyo this year. His win in Boston, a similar kind of gradient to the Paris Olympic course, could prove significant.

MUTISO meanwhile won the recent London Marathon, pulling away from the now 41-year-old BEKELE in the final stages in the British capital. Like KIPCHOGE, PERES JEPCHIRCHIR will be aiming to retain her Olympic crown. If the 30-year-old was to claim Olympic gold in Paris, she’d become the first female marathon runner in history to become Olympic marathon champion twice. JEPCHIRCHIR beat three out of the four fastest women in history – TIGIST ASSEFA, RUTH CHEPNG’ETICH and BRIGID KOSGEI – to win the recent London Marathon, backing up her sucesses in New York in 2021 and Boston in 2022.

KOSGEI has herself been picked for the Kenyan Olympic team and as well as being the former world record-holder with (2:14:04), is also a five-time major marathon champion. The favourite for gold however could end up being HELLEN OBIRI, who is a New York and double Boston Marathon winner. OBIRI is also a double Olympic 5000m silver medallist and world champion. The reserves on the Kenyan team are TIMOTHY KIPLAGAT and KARAN LOKEDI. The men’s Olympic marathon will take place on August 10 and the women’s event will be a day later, closing the athletics action at the Games.

COACHING CONVERSATIONS WITH FRANK DICK  The following article was published on the Athletics Weekly website recently. Photograph of FRANK DICK with DALEY THOMPSON taken by MARK SHEARMAN.

The former UK Athletics Director of Coaching talks about his philosophy, the role of the coach and why people skills are becoming a key tool. There are few people who could match FRANK DICK’S depth of involvement in coaching. The former national coach in Scotland, from 1979 to 1994 he was the British Athletics Federation’s Director of Coaching, as well as personal coach to two-time Olympic decathlon champion DALEY THOMPSON. A motivational sport, business and performance speaker, DICK has also worked across a range of sports and organisations, and currently serves as Chair of the Global Athletics Coaches Academy, created on behalf of World Athletics.

How did your coaching journey start   I went to Royal High School in Edinburgh and ran the under-16s half-mile at one school championships, finishing third. I really thought I could do something in athletics. I got selected for the school team for a competition that was coming up against George Watson’s school. I think I finished first in that race and that sold me. I persuaded my mum and dad to pay to let me go to the Scottish Schoolboys course and I can still remember this giant of a guy called TONY CHAPMAN, who was the Scottish national coach. I worshipped him because he was coming out with so much wisdom that no other person in the world had ever spoken like this before. And at the back of my mind, probably then, I wanted to be a coach. I had a passion for athletics but I developed an even deeper passion for understanding more about it and for passing that on.

How do you view the role of the coach   I think a coach’s function is to create a learning environment. But for what reason? It’s to create a process for the athlete to take ownership of their development and of their performance. If we broaden it further, taking the holistic side, that doesn’t apply to just helping you to perform better in the arena, but to perform better in life. I really embraced [American basketball coach] JOHN WOODEN’S concept of what a coach’s job is when he said it’s to take people from who they are to who they’re capable of becoming.

How would you sum up your coaching philosophy   We are brought up with a fantastic basic philosophy in athletics, and it’s around a concept called personal bests. This sums it up – be better today than you were yesterday, every day. And that applies not just to a junior athlete just starting out but it applies to USAIN BOLT. Otherwise, why did he go from Beijing one year to Berlin the next year and destroy his world records again? You could say: “Well, there’s money in it,” but it’s more than that. It’s like [American football coach] BILL WALSH said in his book: “Take care of performance and the score takes care of itself”. To me, that’s absolutely the case. It doesn’t matter who you are when you go into that arena. If you don’t deliver the performance,  you’re not going to get the result. So stop looking at the result. Don’t look at the scoreboard, look at your performance and stay in the moment. Whether that’s in training or whether it’s in the arena, it’s both the same thing. I was also absolutely obsessive that I didn’t know enough. There was always something more to learn. I worked quite often with ALEX FERGUSON and he said the two most important things you have to do as a leader or as a coach are to help your people to deal with failure or success. My mum used to say success breeds success but ALEX said success can derail progress – you must never be complacent. In my mind, you never arrive and you never arrive in your learning. I believe that any winning culture must be founded on a learning culture.

What advice would you have for someone just starting out on their coaching journey? Would it be to keep that open mind and to keep learning   I think that’s the energy that must be behind everything but what I would also say is there are only three things you have to know in life. First, you’ve got to know what you know – really know it. Secondly, you’ve got to know what you don’t know, or at least admit it. Thirdly, you’ve got to know somebody who does, and bring them to the party. We’ve each got our limitations but you must never make your athletes the victim of those limitations. Make sure you’ve got either a network or at least one person that you respect and who’s been there before to bounce your ideas off and to share your experience with, so that you actually do learn the lessons of experience, or you’ll miss them.

And what about a coach, perhaps at the grassroots level, who has been doing this for a while and is feeling stale, in need of new inspiration   Be curious and keep an open mind. You’ve got to be willing to ask the questions. I’ve got two daughters and when they were tiny, I used to say to both of them: “You know, asking a question is not the sign of stupidity, it’s a sign of intelligence.” Keep asking the questions until you get answers. Life changes around us all the time so don’t have a mindset that goes into a conversation that’s saying, what’s the solution? What’s the answer? Always go in with a mindset that is, how many solutions are there? How many answers are there?

Are there any mistakes you see being made when it comes to coach development   I think one of the things that maybe has been missing in a lot of coach education programmes in the past has been, not the technical stuff, it’s the people stuff that we’ve got to look at far more. Do we really take time to know our people? Do we really make time to know their stress signatures? Do we take time to work out: ‘Am I getting my language right?’ Because not everybody hears the same thing from the same word and I think all of that conflict resolution, how to deal with leadership, how to deal with being a member of a team, these things we don’t often talk about when it comes to coach education. But I think that’s paramount. We’ve also got to be careful that being focused is not the same thing as being blinkered. You can be focused, but you’ve got to be able to scan all the time. What are the things out there that could influence what I’m trying to do and what I’m trying to achieve in coaching personally and for the person I’m coaching? I think we’ve got to get smarter at that and, again, that’s a people skill.

Are there lessons we can learn from the past   After Britain had a very bad Olympics in 1976, winning only one bronze medal through BRENDAN FOSTER, there was a serious examination of where we were at that point. I was Scottish national coach at the time and I was asked to design a coach education programme so I did and I tried it out in Scotland. When I became the director of the British federation, I asked CARL JOHNSON if he could take that on. A lot of people looked at Britain as having the best coach education programme for track and field. The record shows what happened when I was the head coach and an extraordinarily gifted generation of athletes were coming through. But, more importantly, there were also an extraordinarily gifted generation of coaches. Before we went into the Moscow Olympics, we had a difficult selection situation because we had five of the top 10 in the men’s 1500m in the world – and each one of them was coached by a different coach. How good is that? One of the things that I didn’t like about the notion of a centralised institute or place where everybody who was good came to is that it not only disenfranchised local coaches, but also it kills competition and competition is the essence of progress. In the more recent world, if there’s a good coach, athletes will gravitate towards that coach and I get that. But there has to be a bigger mind that steps back from all of that and says: “Is this good for our future? Will this give us sustainable achievement?” Because that’s what you want – not just a one-off flash in the pan.

How did you bring people with you   Go for the coaches, not for the athletes. Work with the coaches and try to discuss with them, understand their philosophies, add to that if possible, and try to enrich that process. In terms of the egos out there, some of them were easily managed, some of them weren’t. But one thing that did occur to me then, and I believe is also true in the current world is that we do not intuitively think like team players in athletics. The fact is, if we don’t work together, we die. We simply must learn how to work together. I stole a word from a book – coopetition. I use this at World Athletics level when we’re trying to create a new mood for coaching worldwide. We’re in it to compete but unless you co-operate and work together, coaching will never grow. There’s the development of coaches and the development of coaching that we must think about. We’ll only achieve that if we work together, if we think together, if we co-operate.

Is there enough value placed on coaching   When the Global Athletics Coaches Academy was formed, it was done so at the request of SEB COE. He wanted a body to be formed from the coaching community to deal with athletics coaching related matters and to facilitate necessary change. We’ve done good things but the issue remains that the public perception is not particularly strong about the position of coaches and coaching. We are working very closely with World Athletics to create a different perception of the culture that will correct this going forward. At the end of the day, we all love the same sport and we love what it stands for. Nobody’s got the right to say that they understand it more than anybody else. We all have our own understandings of it. What are we in this for? If it’s not working, find a way to make it work. And for the most part, it will not be a technical thing, it will be a people thing. It’ll be about behaviours and it’ll be about relationships.

THE EUROPEAN CHAMPIONSHIPS COUNTDOWN IS ON  The following article was published on the Athletics Weekly website recently.

Roma 2024 eagerly prepares to greet fans from June 7 for an exhilarating prelude to the Olympics. From June 7 to 12, Rome will play host to the finest athletes from across the continent as they compete at the Olympic Stadium and in some of the captivating streets of the city. The monumental event marks 50 years since Rome last hosted the European Athletics Championships in 1974, and the third time in history that Italy has been chosen as the venue, with the first edition in Turin in 1934.

The upcoming championships will serve as a build-up to the Olympic Games in Paris, which will kick off just six weeks later. It will be a vital opportunity for athletes to test their competition and make preparations ahead of the Games.

Venue  This year, with six consecutive days of competition and 11 sessions in total, spectators will watch the athletes in action from the stands and curves of the Stadio Olimpico in the Foro Italico Park. Nestled near Rome’s historic centre and the picturesque Monte Mario hill, the Foro Italico Park is a remarkable architectural heritage site. Known as the most important sports centre in Rome, it embodies the pinnacle of Italian sporting excellence. At the heart of the Park lies the Stadio Olimpico, which hosts all the home fixtures for football clubs AS Roma and SS Lazio, not to mention national and international competitions, as well as being the home ground for the Italian national football team. Beyond football, the stadium is also a haven for rugby, hosting Six Nations fixtures and various Test matches. The Foro Italico also attracts global attention for many other events, such as BNL Italia (IBI) tennis internationals and the celebrated Golden Gala athletics meet. Recent highlights include the European Swimming Championships and the Beach Volleyball World Championships. There will also be a Fan Village within the park ready to host all the spectators during the championships.

Schedule  The championships, which take place every two years, kicks off with the women’s heptathlon starting on the Friday morning. Friday evening will see the first finals. The women’s 20km race walk will mark the beginning of the action, followed by the men’s shot put and discus finals in the field. Meanwhile, on the track will be the 4x400m mixed relay final, while the women’s 5000m will end the evening. Saturday night promises an exciting line-up of events. The action starts with the men’s 20km race walk, followed by the finals of the men’s long jump and women’s discus throw. The women’s heptathlon will conclude with the 800m whilst spectators can expect multiple showdowns in the women’s 100m hurdles, the men’s 110m hurdles, and the men’s 5000m, ending with the exciting 100m men’s final. As we move on to Sunday, athletes will run around the streets of Rome for the men’s and women’s half marathon. Later on in the day will see the women competing head-to-head in the high jump final, the men’s hammer throw and the women’s triple jump. On the track, the night will begin with the women’s 3000m steeplechase final followed by the men’s 800m, women’s 1500m and finally the women’s 100m.

The decathlon will begin on Monday as the finals for the women’s pole vault, hammer throw and 400m will also take place. The men’s events will include the 400m, 3000m steeplechase and the 200m final. On the penultimate day we will see the men’s high jump and triple jump final take place alongside the men’s and women’s 400m hurdles. The decathlon will finish with the 1500m, as the women will race in the 10,000m final and the 200m final, whilst the women’s javelin takes place in the field. The last day of the championships will see an exciting last few events. In the field, the men’s pole vault,  javelin and the women’s long jump will take place. Meanwhile, on the track we will see the women’s 800m final, the men’s 10,000m and 1500m finals, as well as the 4x400m and 4x100m relays.

Around 3760 participants in the UK took part in the event virtually or by joining one of the in-person app run events held across the country, including Battersea Park, David Ross Sport Village in Nottingham and Phillips Park in Manchester. Speaking on her win at Wings for Life World Run in Battersea Park, MORRIS, 20, said: “This was such an amazing experience! The atmosphere was brilliant and the temperature was exactly how it needed to be. I came to run with my friends from University hoping to cover a half marathon distance, but ended up running my first ever marathon distance and more!”

MILNE, 34, added: “I’ve been meaning to do Wings for Life World Run for a long time, so I’m pleased to have taken part this year and competed against runners from across the world. It was a unique but tough experience.” The global winners were DOMINSKA STELMACH and TOMOYA WATANABE, covering a total of 55km in Poland and 70.09km in Japan respectively. There were 265,827 people who took part around the world this year, raising a record €8.1m in aid of spinal cord research. Spanning 192 nationalities and 158 countries, participants ran, walked or rolled to keep ahead of the Catcher Car. Since the Wings for Life World Run started a decade ago, a total of €51.93 million has been raised, courtesy of the fact that an amazing 1,559,543 people have taken part.

Entry to the 12th edition of Wings for Life World Run 2025 is now open here.

On seeking technical advice “MailChimp” was recommended as the best way for SBH to go forward. There is one thing you should be aware off is that when you receive an email from me, the footer at the bottom has 4 options, of which one is “Unsubscribe Me From List”. Could I ask you not to select this as if you do you will be automatically removed from my distribution list.

EASTERN YOUNG ATHLETES LEAGUE – The second of four fixtures took place at Watford on 5 May.
The following results are provisional, although I have added any season or personal best performance from your profile.

Due to an abnormal amount of unavailable athletes, the team rallied to an exceptional win. Our athletes covered numerous events where possible, and as you will see we had many great individual performances.

Our next fixture is on Sunday 2 June at Sandy, in which our next opponents are Bedfordshire Lions, Harlow, City of Norwich, Peterborough & Nene Valley and Stevenage & HAWCS.

Match Result – 1st SBH (638 points), 2nd St Albans (480), 3rd Bedford & County (444), 4th Watford (366), 5th Brentwood (363), 6th Peterborough (0)

Based on the provional results published, we are currently in 3rd place to Chelmsford & Havering. At our next fixture on Sunday 2 June, our best placed opponets are City of Norwich in 6th place and Stevenage & HAWCS are in 10th place.

BANNISTER MILES LIVES UP TO EXPECTATIONS WITH SUB-FOURS GALORE  The following article was published on the Athletics Weekly website recently.

A jubilant OSSAMA MESLEK leads a quartet of milers inside four minutes in Oxford exactly 70 years after ROGER BANNISTER’S famous feat. On an afternoon that saw Iffley Road track in Oxford drenched with relentless rain, the showers finally stopped just in time for the final race of the day at 6pm. The flag on top of the nearby church stopped fluttering in the wind and went limp, just as it had 70 years earlier when ROGER BANNISTER became the first man to break four minutes for the mile. On that occasion – May 6, 1954 – BANNISTER created history with 3:59.4. This Monday, though, four men smashed through the barrier on a day of joyous anniversary celebrations. OSSAMA MESLEK led the charge in glorious style with (3:56.15) followed by JAMES YOUNG with (3:57.71), TIARNAN CRORKEN in (3:58.85) and MAX WHARTON with (3:59.19). The Italian international, who runs for Leeds City, even had the luxury of celebrating during his final strides as a crowd of around 2000 roared its approval. Moments earlier – and 70 years after DIANE LEATHER had become the world’s first female sub-five-minute miler – KHAI MHLANGA ran (4:36.09) to hold off BETHAN MORLEY and LAUREN CHURCH in the women’s mile.

“Going sub-four here is pretty special,” said MESLEK k. “As I’m racing at the Diamond League in Doha in a few days’ time, it felt perfect to come here. The conditions didn’t seem great but it was perfectly still in the end. I tried to wind it up toward the end and everything went to plan.” Among the crowd was current world mile record-holder HICHAM EL GUERROUJ of Morocco, British record-holder STEVE CRAM and former mile record-holders FILBERT BAYI of Tanzania and NOUREDDINE MORCELI of Algeria, plus Irish miling legend EAMONN COGHLAN. After being swamped by autograph hunters and selfie seekers all day, the supermilers turned their attentions to watch the main race of the day – and it didn’t disappoint.

The BANNISTER family were also in attendance with their father, who died in 2018, no doubt casting a nod of approval from the heavens. “I think he would have been very proud of what happened today,” said one of his sons, THURSTAN BANNISTER. EL GUERROUJ, whose mile record of (3:43.13) has stood since 1999, was determined to visit Oxford for the anniversary celebrations despite visa problems and he said: “I wanted to be here to celebrate the whole legacy that our spiritual father left behind. “I had the privilege to meet ROGER BANNISTER at Crystal Palace and I was excited because he was such a great inspiration to me and many athletes who know the history of the sport.”

MORCELI an Olympic and three-time world 1500m champion in addition to being a (3:44.39) miler, added: “ROGER was a wonderful person. His spirit will live on as long as we live and will be an inspiration for many generations. I was inspired by him because nobody thought someone would break four minutes but he opened the door for us. He made us believe in ourselves and that there is no limit to our performance.” COGHLAN, the first man to run a sub-3:50 mile indoors and, later, a sub-four-minute mile as an M40, said: “I was only a year old when Sir ROGER ran a world record for the mile. I remember watching it at the cinema as a child. When I took up athletics I dreamed of running for Ireland, going to the Olympics and running a sub-four-minute mile, so to achieve all this after watching him as a child and then being here as part of that whole tradition is unbelievable.”

The day was as much of an “occasion” as a track meeting. It began with community mile runs in the centre of Oxford at 9am with CRAM and EL GUERROUJ rolling back the years and rubbing shoulders with fun runners and youngsters. The track races during the afternoon were superbly staged in difficult conditions by Oxford University students and the British Milers Club with spectators able to browse around a magnificent Museum of World Athletics display as they took refuge from the rain. Later, a number of guests enjoyed an evening of fine dining and nostalgia at Exeter College as the BANNISTER family paid an emotional and heartfelt tribute to their father’s exploits, not just in athletics but in neurology and sports administration.

There were even world bests recorded in the new steeplechase mile with WILL BATTERSHILL running (4:25.81) in the men’s race despite being frustratingly held in the rain at the start with his fellow runners for several minutes as officials made sure the barriers were fixed in the right positions. “The mile is hard enough anyway so if you add barriers then it’s a tough event,” said BATTERSHILL on this new event. “It felt like a sprint and you haven’t got time to lose focus as the last lap comes around quickly. It hurt a lot too!” Despite the damp conditions, athletes of all ages excelled. The masterful CLARE ELMS smashed the British W60 mile record by eight seconds with (5:30.88) in the women’s C race, which means she now owns 10 national age group records in the mile from the W45 through to W60 categories on the road and track.

Only 14, JORJIA MARCH of Barnet & District AC was a convincing winner of the under-15 girls’ mile in (4:57.00), while MADISON KINDLER of Brentwood Beagles ran (5:03.85) for a big win in the under-13 girls’ race. The men’s B race also saw some fine running with BEN REYNOLDS taking a narrow win in (4:06.32) from under-20 runner WILLIAM RABJOHNS as EVAN GRIME, only 15, clocked (4:11.59) in ninth. In comparison, BANNISTER clocked just (4:24.6) aged 18, albeit on a cinder track with heavy leather spikes, before eventually breaking the four-minute barrier seven years later. Monday was also an opportunity for plenty of Oxford students, past and present, to put on their racing spikes. These included former Oxford student SIMON MUGGLESTONE, the 1987 European junior 5000m champion and 3:58 miler, who didn’t run a step for 30 years following Achilles surgery but made a comeback a couple of years ago and now, as an M55 runner, clocked (5:09.99) just 24 hours after racing 10km at the Great Birmingham Run. BRITISH RELAY RUNNERS QUALIFY FOR PARIS EN MASSE IN THE BAHAMAS  The following article was published on the Athletics Weekly website recently.

Four of the five GB teams at the World Athletics Relays on Saturday secured their places at this summer’s Olympics with all the teams having a further chance on Sunday. British relay teams enjoyed an almost perfect night when it came to qualifying for the Olympics as four out of their five teams secured places at the Paris Games thanks to good results at the World Relays in The Bahamas.

The men’s and women’s 4x100m and 4x400m teams all earned qualification for Paris with only the mixed relay team missing out, although they will have a further chance during the second day of the action on Sunday (May 5) in Nassau.

Olympic hosts France and the United States also qualified four teams for Paris at the end of the first day. On Sunday the leading teams will compete for prize money and Olympic lane seeding positions at this summer’s Games, whereas all other teams will race in the additional round where the top two teams in each of the heats will also qualify for Olympics. The mixed relay on Saturday saw the event record broken multiple times with the United States emerging as quickest with (3:11.52). Led by FEMKE BOL, the Netherlands were the second quickest on the night with (3:12.16) whereas Ireland clocked a national record of (3:12.50) with CILLIN GREENE, RHASIDAT ADEKELE, THOMAS BARR and SHARLENE MAWDSLEY excelling. In the same heat as Ireland, the GB team of BRODIE YOUNG, AMA PIPI, CHARLIE DOBSON and LAVIA NIELSEN were third in (3:13.52) with DOBSON running a reported (43.63) split. NIELSEN said: “This is a lot of our season openers. It’s really hard to judge your pace and your race plan. We’ll watch it back and have a good debrief with MARTYN ROONEY our coach and try to do much better than that.”

The women’s 4x100m saw the United States lead the way with (42.21) but the GB team of ASHA PHILIP, IMANI LANSIQUOT, BIANCA WILLIAMS and AMY HUNT won their heat with the second fastest time overall of (42.33). “That was incredible it was my first time with these three girls,” said HUNT, “and they’ve been so absolutely amazing in trusting me and mentoring me and making sure I am on it!”

Anchored by world 100m, 200m and 4x100m champion NOAH LYLES, the United States were quickest in the men’s 4x100m too with (37.49) as they comfortably beat Olympic champions Italy in their heat. Britain – with EUGENE AMO-DADZIE, ZHARNEL HUGHES, RICHARD KILTY and NETHANE MITCHELL-BLAKE – were seventh quickest overall but crucially runner-up in their heat to France in (38.36). “For years I was sat on my sofa watching GB teams smash it in the relay,” said AMO-DADZIE, “it was always one of those things I would think ‘oh wow how amazing that would be’ and now I am in the situation where I have helped GB get to that stage.”

Ireland led the way in the women’s 4x400m as they continued their great (and busy) night. Their quartet of PHIL HEALY, MAWDSLEY, SOPHIE BECKER and ADELEKE (with 49.48) clocked (3:24.38) as the United States had the second best time overall with (3:24.76) and Great Britain next best with (3:24.89) as they finished runners up to Ireland in their heat with HANNAH KELLY, VICTORIA OHURUGU, NICOLE YEARGIN and LINA NIELSEN on duty.

There was a shock in the men’s 4x400m as the United States were disqualified for moving out of the assigned order at one of the changeovers, although they will have a second attempt at qualification for Paris on Sunday. It meant a Botswana quartet that included LETSILE TEBOGO (with a 43.49 split) and ISAAC MAKWALA were fastest overall with (2:59.73) followed by a South African team with world record-holder WAYDE VAN NIEKERK clocking (2:59.76). The British team of MATT HUDSON-SMITH, TOBY HARRIES, LEE THOMPSON and LEWIS DAVEY were second in their heat behind Italy with (3:02.10).

Teams qualified for Paris on Saturday (May 5)
Women’s 4x100m Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Great Britain & NI, Netherlands, Poland, United States – Men’s 4x100m Canada, China, France, Great Britain & NI, Italy, Jamaica, Japan, United States – Women’s 4x400m Canada, France, Great Britain & NI, Ireland, Italy, Norway, Poland, United States – Men’s 4x400m Belgium, Botswana, Germany, Great Britain & NI, Italy, Japan, Nigeria, South Africa – Mixed 4x400m Belgium, Dominican Republic, France, Ireland, Netherlands, Nigeria, Poland, United States

ATHLETES SET FOR THE INAUGURAL PICKERING MEMORIAL THROWS INTERNATIONAL  The following article was published on the Athletics Weekly website recently.

Hammer thrower CHARLOTTE PAYNE is among the entries for an event that is being staged one year after SHAUN PICKERING died and which aims to raise funds for the RON PICKERING Memorial Fund. Looking for bank holiday plans for the end of this month? Look no further. The inaugural PICKERING Memorial Throws International is coming to Loughborough University on Monday May 27, writes NICK RIDGEON. Partnering with some fantastic charities and brands, this exclusive throws-only event will be the most inclusive pathway competition, incorporating able-bodied and para-events across the different disciplines. Celebrating the lives and contributions of the PICKERING family, we can’t wait to give throwers the perfect opportunity to throw far, nurture new talent and showcase British throwing at its best.

Featuring teams from England and all across Europe, the standard of this competition will be nothing short of impressive, with athletes vying for those all-important qualification distances to secure their spots on the European, world under-20 and Olympic teams this summer. England team captain CHARLOTTE PAYNE shared her excitement for the event not only in terms of competition, but also as it is supporting a cause close to her heart as a recipient of a RON PICKERING Memorial Fund grant: “The PICKERING Memorial Throws International is the perfect way to honour the legacy of SHAUN PICKERING who was an incredible champion of athletics. He contributed so much to the athletes and coaches in our sport, and we are so grateful for the time and effort he invested in us. “We have such a talented crop of young throwers in the UK, and I can’t wait to witness some future champions in action not only from the UK but from all across Europe, all celebrating the amazing work of the PICKERING family.” Joining PAYNE on the line-up so far will be Swiss javelin and shot specialist SABRINA BOSS and Italian discus and shot specialist PIETRO DAL SOGLIO, to name just two.

Throws coach GARRY POWER will be heading up the England team and says: “The PICKERING Memorial Throws International is going to be a fantastic celebration of throws. We are throwers, throwing a party! Come and see our excellent young throwers striving for personal bests and qualification distances in high quality competition from athletes across Europe.” As well as claiming top spot on the podium, athletes will be battling for prizes that range from free accommodation on a warm weather training camp to £500 from the RON PICKERING Memorial Fund and free Shokz headphones.

Tickets are £6 with all of the ticket sales split between the RPMF and the Personal Best Foundation.

MY GREATEST RACE: BRENDAN FOSTER  The following article was published on the Athletics Weekly website recently. Photograph taken by MARK SHEARMAN.

On home turf, the European champion vowed to christen the revamped Gateshead Stadium with a world record bid.Gateshead Meeting, Gateshead,  August 3, 1974 – 3000m, first place,(7:35.2) world record.

In 1972, I ran the 1500m in the Olympics and was fifth. I thought: “That’s as good as I’m going to get,” so I stepped up to the 5000m. I ran two miles at Crystal Palace in 1973 and broke the world record but then, in the autumn of that year, Gateshead Council decided that, with money in the budget following local government reorganisation, they would build a proper track at the stadium instead of the ash track which we’d had for years. They held a reception for my two miles record and I’d had a couple of drinks. I did a reply saying thanks very much indeed and I then said: “I promise you, if you put the track in, I’ll come back and organise an event and break a world record.” Of course, it was reported in the press and everything locally. Eventually, summer came around and I thought: “I’m going to have to do it.” People started referring to it and it became a big deal.

The Commonwealth Games was in January 1974 and I finished second in the 5000m, breaking the British record for that distance and also in the 1500m. I was obviously running really well and the world record was a logical step. I thought: “Let’s go for the 3000m,” which was EMIEL PUTTEMANS’ record. It was a bloody good record of (7:37.6). It’d been (7:39) before that. When I started studying it, I realised I needed to run 61 seconds for seven-and-a-half laps, which is quite a tall order. Luckily, I was in good shape. The track was laid about 10 days beforehand. Before they put the lines on it, I ran on it and thought: “This is really good.” It probably felt like these new running shoes. It was nice and bouncy, it looked good and it felt good. For the meeting that we organised, we’d sold all the tickets. It was absolutely packed with 10,000-12,000 people so it was all turning into a big event. ITV decided they wanted to televise it.

Maybe nowadays, making a promise that you were going to get a world record would feel a bit risky and a bit stupid, unnecessarily aggressive or loud. This was different. It was just matter of fact. It didn’t feel as though, if it didn’t happen, it would be a big deal. Now, if I’d said I was going to do it, and I didn’t manage it, I would be battered on social media. I’d trained in Leeds with MIKE BAXTER, an international who’d run at the Commonwealth Games and the European Championships for Great Britain in the 5000m. When I told him I was going to go for this record, he said he’d run the first mile for me. He took me around in about (3:47) for 1500m and then I had to do the rest myself, because we didn’t have pacemakers in those days. They weren’t really allowed, so he had to keep going with it and run the whole race. The crowd was mental. The minute I stepped on the track, they were cheering and, as the race went on, you could feel it. Coming into the finishing straight, there were so many people on the trackside and they were almost invading the track at the finish. It was the first major event at Gateshead but it wasn’t a new stadium. It was an old wooden stadium, everyone was stomping on the floor and you could hear it. It was a raucous occasion and a great one. The leader of Gateshead Council often tells me he was there when that happened. He was only 15 years of age but still remembers it to this day. Lots of people came. In fact, I’ve probably met 100,000 people who said they were there to see it! And that was a springboard for the halcyon days of athletics in Gateshead.

A few weeks later I won the European title as well. When I lined up in Rome, I was running against the greatest distance runner of all time in LASSE VIREN. But, after Gateshead, I knew I was in great shape. I knew I could beat him. I just had to perform in Rome but I had the confidence that came from running faster than he’d ever run before. It was his two miles world record I’d broken the year before so I knew he couldn’t run any faster than me.

In the final in Rome, I broke away and he came with me. There was a short period when he was literally on my shoulder and I was thinking: “Right, just go faster, just go faster, just go faster,” which I did and eventually broke him, and he dropped back. The confidence came from breaking that 3000m record because at the time it was considered one of the top marks. In fact, it was only in recent years that the stadium record was broken at Gateshead, so it was a good record. It was a good performance.

UK ATHLETICS YOUTH DEVELOPMENT LEAGUE, SOUTHERN PREMIER UPPER – The first of three fixtures took place at Eton on 28 April.

TIPTON HARRIERS ALLAN RUSHMER DIES AGED 80  The following article was published on the Athletics Weekly website recently.

Popular distance runner won Commonwealth bronze over three miles in 1966 and later excelled as a veteran runner. One of the most iconic athletes during the 1960s and early 1970s, ALLAN RUSHMER won bronze in the Commonwealth Games three miles in 1966, placed fifth in the European 10,000m in the same year and represented Britain at the 1968 Olympics. A Tipton Harriers stalwart from the Black Country of the West Midlands, he died on April 23 in York aged 80.

RUSHMER was a relatively late starter as he began running at 16 when he joined Oldbury AC and soon began to make an impact in national competitions. In 1965 he joined Tipton Harriers and began to break through to international level while holding down a full-time job as an upholsterer. His GB debut came alongside BRUCE TULLOH against the Soviet Union at the White City in June 1966, but later that summer, just days after England had won the World Cup at Wembley, he finished third in the British Empire and Commonwealth Games in Kingston, Jamaica, behind KIP KEINO of Kenya and RON CLARKE of Australia in the three miles, clocking (13:08.6). Returning home, he then finished fifth – and first Brit – in the 10,000m at the European Championships, running (28:37.8) to equal MIKE FREARY’S British record.

“RUSHIE”, as he was affectionately known, enjoyed many clashes with fellow iconic athletes from the period such as RON HILL, GERRY NORTH and DICK TAYLOR. He went on to run a sub-four-minute mile with (3:58.7) in 1967 and (13:29.8) for 5000m in 1970, whereas he also ran a (2:20) marathon despite only dabbling with the distance. In 1968 he earned selection for the Olympics in Mexico but was knocked out in the heats, describing it as a “disaster”. He was also unlucky in 1970 to finish fourth in the stirring Commonwealth 5000m in Edinburgh behind IAN STEWART, IAN MCCAFFERTY and KEINO, but ahead of multiple world record-holder CLARKE, who he passed on the last lap. STEWART went on to be his best man at his wedding in 1972 and RUSHMER went on to have two children, EMILY and LAURA, with his wife KATH.

His Olympic dreams were ruined that same year, though, when bronchial asthma put paid to his attempts to make the team for Munich. He had been in fine form, too, placing third in the infamous 1972 English National where a sudden sleet storm with plummeting temperatures at Sutton Park left the athletes shivering with, in some cases, hypothermia. The illness ended RUSHMER’S career prematurely but he would return a few years later as a masters athlete, winning the European veterans’ 10,000m title in 1984. Yet more than anything, RUSHMER was renowned for being a club stalwart and few races excited him more than national road relays or battling for team medals at the National Cross Country Championships. “Small in stature but massive in heart and soul,” Tipton Harriers said in a statement. “ALLAN was truly one of the greats that have graced this club and had one of the longest competitive associations with us.”

PARKRUN ORGANISERS REFUSE TO BRING BACK THE STATS  The following article was published on the Athletics Weekly website recently.

When it comes to bringing back the statistics on the parkrun website, organisers are digging the heels of their running shoes firmly into the turf. Not only do parkrun organisers have no intention of bringing back the age and course records but they may go further in future by removing the ability for parkrunners to see the results of fellow participants. Campaigners who are calling for parkrun to “bring back the stats” – WILL HARTLEY, MARY TAYLOR and ALEXANDER SMOTROV – met with parkrun founder PAUL SINTON-HEWITT and chief executive RUSS JEFFERYS after the Higginson parkrun in Marlow on Saturday (April 27) and say they had good-natured discussion that lasted 90 minutes.

The campaigners were met with disappointment, though, when SINTON-HEWITT and JEFFERYS ferys insisted they had no intention of buckling to a petition that has so far gained 25,000 signatures. What’s more, they talked about possibly going further in future. “They have visions for the future of removing the ability to see any other runners data and results,” writes TAYLOR in a post-meeting summary posted here, “and in only being able to see your own individual results as well as event results.” However, she added: “They envisage parkrun to have a social aspect where you can “befriend” or “follow” other runners, as you might on Facebook or Strava, and mutual friends could view the statistics of their friends.”

TAYLOR and fellow campaigners at the meeting say the idea of removing a participant’s gender from parkrun’s online pages was also discussed. Another strong theme was parkrun’s insistence that their events are neither a sport nor a race. “If you want to be competitive,” is their message, “then join a club.” TAYLOR said: “It was really disappointing that parkrun show no intention of seeking a way to continue providing the course stats that meant so much to so many. It is clear that they wish to present their reason as it being in keeping with their ethos and aims as a charity, but it’s also clear that, to an undefined degree, they have felt it necessary to make this change to avoid being classified as a sport or race.” She added: “It is hard to agree that they are truly ‘listening’ when they open a discussion meeting with ‘the stats are never coming back’. “Our aims have never been to damage parkrun, but to return the course stats for those who benefited from them, since for us the justification for their removal has always fallen short of adequately supporting the change.”

PHOTOGRAPH’S – From time to time we have photographs of our members taken at meetings or presentations which we would like to use both on the website or incorporated within our report to our local newspaper. Can you please let me know if you do NOT want your photograph to be published. Also, I would appreciate if you could send me any photographs, which I can then publish on the website and newsletter.

FACEBOOK – Photographs can be found on the SBH page.

CAN YOU HELP PLEASE I would welcome any contributions From Yourselves, any impending marriages, or additions to the family, any running or competing incidents, also past warm weather training/holidays (No Club 24 please). Currently the response has been excellent, but if you have anything that could make it into next week’s Newsletter – please email me.

CURRENT DISTRIBUTION OF SHAFTESBURY INFORMATION Currently I notify members (by email) using “MailChimp”. The reason I changed, was in November 2017 “Gmail” put a limit of 100 addresses that users could send to in a 24-hour period, and currently I send to approximately 850 members each issue.
