BETH POTTER BACK TO TRIATHLON – The following article appeared in Athletics Weekly.
After finishing as top British athlete in the women’s 10,00m final at the IAAF World Championships last weekend. BETH will be slipping back into her wetsuit and on to her bike this weekend when she attempts to qualify for the 2018 Commonwealth Games triathlon at an event in Belgium.
BETH will compete in a European Cup triathlon near Antwerp this Sunday 13 August. The event is not an official trial for the Commonwealth Games but a podium place would put her in good stead for selection to compete for Scotland on the Gold Coast next April.
The 25-year-old clocked (32:15.88) in London to finish 21st overall and third European home despite being troubled by injury in the run-up to the event. “I’m happy with that as I was picking people off towards the end and have has a rocky patch lately with some injury problems” she said, explaining that she had a stress reaction in one of the metatarsals in her foot.
Despite training for triathlon full-time, in May she won the British trial for London, beating STEPH TWELL among others, but she has not worn spikes since, although she did wear some for the World Championship final.
“I had to adjust my running to even less than I was doing before Highgate”, she said. “I was advised to prioritise the quality sessions so haven’t got the mileage”.
BETH’S grandfather passed away recently as well. “So it’s been a hard couple of weeks”, she added.

NEWSLETTER HOLIDAY – I will be taking a break to Zakynthos in Greece on the 16 August, therefore the 17 August Newsletter will be published on the website on Monday 15 August, and normal service will resume on Thursday 31 August. As the final Eastern Young Athletes League is on Sunday 13 August, I will publish the results in the 31 August Newsletter.

2 NEW CLUB RECORD’S – Congratulations to CRISTINA POTTER U17 who at last week’s Eastern Young Athletes League, broke her own existing Javelin Club Record with a throw of (38.98m) adding 3.26m to her 4 June throw.
Congratulations to KYLE LANGFORD U23 (see report below) who broke his own Senior 800m Club Record with a time of (1:45.25) in the Final of the 800m at the World Championships. This took .20 of a second off his 9 July time which was also set in the Olympic Park. Moving him up to UK No.2 in 2017.

IAAF WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS – The Championships opened on Day 1 – Friday 4 August, with NICK PERCY in the Discus qualification, he achieved (56.93m) in Pool B finishing in 15th place, a little below par, but the experience will no doubt see him progress in the coming years.
NICK career to date has included competing in the World Youth (2011), World Junior (2012) European Junior (2013 Silver Medal) and Commonwealth Games (2014). Domestically he has won the England U15 (2011), England U20 (2012, 2013) and England U23 (2014, 2015, 2016) Championships. In 2014 NICK took up a degree at Nebraska University in America, culminating in winning the NCAA D1 title in 2015. His personal best is (63.38m) in July 2016 and season’s best is (62.91m) ranking him currently UK No.1.

Day 2 – Saturday 5 August started with a bang with DARRYL NEITA U23, running in Heat 6 of the 100m she ran a well-executed race winning in a time of (11.15 w0.6). Her interview was a breath of fresh air, so positive about her race, and firmly believes her future as a winner in a global championship, is a real possibility.
DARRYL’S career to date DARRYL’S career to date has been exceptional, when last year she won the Bronze Medal in the GB&NI 4x100m relay team at the Rio Olympics. This year DARRYL won Gold in the England U23 and Silver in the England Senior Championships 2016 and 2017, In 2015 finished 4th in the European Junior and Gold in the England U20 Championships.
DARRYL’S current personal best is (11.14 w-1.4) set earlier this month in the Olympic Stadium, breaking ABI OYEPITAN’S club record, also is currently ranked UK No.2, and No.7 on the UK all-time list.

The final event of the morning session was the 800m, KYLE LANGFORD U23 was drawn in Heat 2 of 6, in which they went through the bell in (51.80) the second fastest time of the 6 Heats. Along the back straight the leaders put in a surge, and suddenly a gap of 5 metres opened up between them and KYLE, this was maintained into final straight and KYLE could not close it, eventually finishing 5th (1:46.38).
In his interview KYLE was convinced it was the end of his Championships, especially after Heat 3 he was in 4th place of the 6 losers to qualify for the Semi-Finals. But after Heats 5 and 6 KYLE had finished in 5th place qualifying for Sundays Semi-Final.
It must have been and interesting chat between KYLE and his coach, our own GEORGE HARRISON MBE.
KYLE’S career to date includes 3rd World Youth 2013, 8th World Junior 2014, Gold in European Junior and ran in the World Championships in Beijing 2015. In the British Championships KYLE won the Gold in 2015 and 3rd in 2017.
KYLE’S current personal best is (1:45.45) set earlier this month in the Olympic Stadium, breaking PAUL HERBERT’S club record, also is currently ranked UK No.3.

The evening session featured BETH POTTER in the 10000m, which turned out to be an astonishing race with AYANA of Ethiopia lapping some 90% of the field. BETH stuck to her race plan, and finished in 21st place (32:15.88) which is her 3rd fastest time to date.
BETH’S career to date includes the 10000m in the Olympic Games 2016. In the British Championships Bronze in 2017 and Gold in 2016, 3rd in 2014. European Championships and Commonwealth Games 5000m and 10000m in 2014. European U23 and Silver in England U23 Championships in 2013.
BETH’S current personal best is (32:03.45) set in Stanford, U.S.A in 2016, breaking SARAH WALDRON’S club record, her seasons best is (32:04.63) and is currently ranked UK No.1.

Day 3 – Sunday 6 August the evening session featured the 100m semi-finals, with DARRYL NEITA U23 lining up in Heat 1 and was up against the winners to be MARIE-JOSEE TA LOU Silver medal and DAFNE SCHIPPERS to Bronze medal. DARRYL has a good start to eventually finish in 4th place (11.16 w0.8) and just missing out of the final. She has come away with her head held high, and will be looking forward to 2018.

Later in the evening, the three 800m semi-finals took place, with KYLE LANGFORD U23 drawn in Heat 2. KYLE was looking refreshingly relaxed, and from the gun he settled in around 4th position, at the bell (50.85) the fastest of the 3 semi-finals, he was still 4th. Towards the end of the back straight LEWANDOWSKI went past KYLE, and stayed just behind when they entered the final straight. The LEWANDOWSKI kicked and KYLE stayed just behind, 50m to go KORIR of Kenya was treading water, KYLE was closing on LEWANDOWSKI and around 10m to go he went past him to finish in 2nd place (1:45.81) earning a well-deserved place in Tuesday’s final.

Day 4 – Monday 7 August started with the first round of the 200m with ZHARNEL HUGHES U23 drawn in Heat 6, and finished in 4th place (20.43 w0.6), ZHARNEL said his start needs to be improved, but qualified for Wednesday’s semi-finals as the fastest of the 3 fastest losers.
ZHARNEL’S career to date includes finishing 5th in the 2015 World Championships, also competed in the 2012 and 2014 World Youth Championships.
ZHARNEL’S current personal best is (20.02 w-0.1) set in the final of the 2015 World Championships, breaking TERRY WILLIAMS club record, and ranks him No.4 on the UK all-time list. His seasons best is (20.22 w1.2) and is currently ranked UK No.3.

Later in the evening NATHAN FOX started the qualifying pool A of the Triple Jump, and produced a jump of (16.49m w1.4) to finish in 10th place.
NATHAN is one of Great Britain’s most prestigious triple jump talents. After breaking the UK under 15 national record at 14, he became the first and only person of that age in British history to jump over 14meters (14.11m). He then represented Great Britain for the first time at the European Youth Olympics, placing 5th in the final. After being plagued with two serious injuries which hindered his natural progress, Nathan represented England at the 2014 Commonwealth Games where he placed 6th in the Final. His British Championship record is Gold in 2015, Silver 2014 and 2017, Bronze in 2013, also winning the British Indoor Championships in 2015, 2016 and 2017.
NATHAN’S current personal best is (16.81m w-1.4) set on the 14 May this year, ranking him UK No.1.

Day 5 – Tuesday 8 August will be a day that will live long in my memory as KYLE LANGFORD U23 produced another outstanding performance. This was the 800m final which was run almost identical as the semi-final, and went through the bell in (50.78), KYLE again entered the home straight a little of the pace but produced that devastating turn of speed, and with finish line fast approaching just failed to catch KIPYEGON BETT of Kenya by 4 hundredth’s of a second for 4th place.  His time of (1:45.25) was a new personal best, KYLE believes he can win gold at the IAAF World Championships in Doha in two years’ time and is keen to show his versatility by running for Britain in the 4x400m and 1500m.

BRENDAN FOSTER AWARDED IAAF GOLDEN ORDER OF MERIT – British distance running great recognised for his major contributions to the advancement of athletics
Brendan Foster has been awarded the IAAF Golden Order of Merit at a ceremony in London.

The British distance running great received the world governing body’s highest award in recognition of his major contributions to the advancement of athletics.
On the track, FOSTER became an Olympic and four-time Commonwealth Games medallist, winning 10,000m bronze at the 1976 Olympic Games in Montreal and Commonwealth gold in Edmonton in 1978. He also claimed the European 5000m title in Rome in 1974 and 1500m bronze in Helsinki in 1971.
Since hanging up his spikes, he has become one of the most distinctive voices within the sport as a television commentator, a role from which he will retire following the upcoming IAAF World Championships, and has led a running revolution in Britain as creator of the Great North Run and founder of The Great Run Company.
Foster received his award from IAAF president SEBASTIAN COE at London’s Tate Modern as delegates from more than 200 of the IAAF’s 214 Member Federations were welcomed for the 51st IAAF Congress.
The evening also included the presentation of the IAAF’s Plaque of Merit to six distinguished members of the global athletics family who have made career-long contributions to the success and the development of the sport – FUMIHIRO YAMASAWA (JPN), ALECK SKHOSANA (RSA), WILFREDYS LEON (VEN), CLEMENS PROKOP (GER), REYNOLD O’NEAL (IVB) and FLETCHER MCEWEN (AUS).
The day after receiving his award, FOSTER – whose Great Run events in Newcastle and Manchester also include innovative street athletics meetings – formed part of a panel at the IAAF Athletics Connect event which discussed the need for innovation within the sport

Congratulations to EDWIN who won 3 Gold and 1 Silver Individual, plus 1 relay Bronze Medals. He also won the CARL WHITTAKER Trophy for the 5th year in a row, which is presented to the athlete with the fastest 100m time in the Championships.

100m Gold Medal (11.78), 200m Gold Medal (24.64), 400m Silver Medal (SB 61.13), Long Jump Gold Medal (5.36m), 4x100m Relay Bronze Medal with the Royal Free Hospital team

ENGLISH SCHOOLS CHAMPIONSHIP PHOTOGRAPHSMany thanks to GARY MITCHELL who provided these outstanding photographs which he took at the recent 87th English Schools Championships in Birmingham. It proved to be an excellent Championships with 28 athletes flying the Shaftesbury colours, this was a record number of SBH participants and a record number of medals.

The first photograph features HAMZA KADIR U20 showing a somewhat jubilant celebration, in winning the Senior Boys 1500m title (4:00.20) from TIARNEN CRORKEN (4:00.32) and BENJAMIN DAVIES (4:00.88). In the Heats HAMZA won in a time of (3:58.97) his personal best is (3:51.29) set early this year.

In the Intermediate Boys 1500m first photograph shows THOMAS PATRICK U17 (No.37) preparing to make his challenge around the final bend. The next shows YOSUF BIZIMANA winning (4:00.60), JACQUES MAURICE second (4:01.18) and THOMAS managed to recover his stumble to take the Bronze Medal (4:01.84). I contacted THOMAS who sent me these very candid and thought provoking words.
“I thought I had done everything right, I was really disappointed not to win the race. When thinking it through, I have to put it down to a lack of experience and a misjudgement on my part, In that in I did more than I had too in the heats to qualify and with the lactic acid kicking in I simply ran out of gas in the final a few metres before I reached the finishing line.
It was a painful experience but one I will hopefully learn from when I compete in the future races to come. Given the fact that I ran only one race throughout the whole of the winter, due to injury, upon reflection I am pleased with my progress on the track this summer and looking forward to many more races when I can compete and do well in the rest of my athletics career”.

The Intermediate Boys 400m Hurdles was an outstanding race with BEN LLOYD U17 seen taking the final hurdle just in front of KARL JOHNSON (53.36), BEN’S winning time was a (53.12), retaining his title from 2016, and put him at No.1 in the UK rankings. The following week-end BEN was selected by England to compete in the Schools International in Dublin, winning the 400m Hurdles in a time of (53.35).

CAU INTER COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIPS – INCLUDING THE ENGLAND ATHLETICS SENIOR CHAMPIONSHIPS – Took place at Bedford last Saturday and Sunday.

EASTERN YOUNG ATHLETICS LEAGUE – The fourth match of the season took place at Allianz Park last Sunday.
Congratulations, after finishing second in our first three fixtures, we produced a well-deserved win by a margin of 60.5 points. The League was formed in 2014, in which we were a composite team with Barnet & District, we finished 8th in 2014 and 2015, qualifying for the Plate Final and we finished in 6th/5th place respectively. 2016 saw us finish in 5th place qualifying for the Top 6 Final, finishing in 6th place. This season the decision was made to compete as a standalone team Shaftesbury Barnet Harriers, which put additional pressure on our Team Managers and Athletes. The results have been exceptional, proving what an outstanding squad of Young Athletes we have, although we are aware there are certain events we are weak. Our Coaches are already endeavouring in filling theses events for next season.

It was a record day with 46 first places, and most of our recent new members performed exceptionally well.

Team Result1st SBH (764), 2nd Chelmsford (703.5), 3rd Thurrock (633), 4th Stevenage (587.5), 5th Peterborough (285), 6th Luton (186), 7th Hertford & Ware/Enfield & Haringey (178).

League Positions after 4 rounds – 1st Ipswich (28 league points – 3190.5 points), 2nd Havering (27 – 3307.5), 3rd Nene Valley (27 – 2873.5), 4th SBH (25 – 3009.5), 5th Bedford (25 – 2858.5), 6th Basildon (24 – 2810.5)

With the final fixture to come, which is at Allianz Park on 13 August, we are in an excellent position to finish in the top six in the League. Which would mean we would then qualify for the Final which is on Sunday 3 September, and provisionally will be at Bedford providing they finish in the top six.
The final fixture has only 6 teams competing, not 7, and they are Cambridge & Coleridge, Harlow, Herts Phoenix, Ipswich and St Albans.
