Shaftesbury Barnet Harriers Weekly Newsletter Wednesday 29 July 2026

I hope you have had a great week so far. As July comes to a close, we’re looking back on another fantastic month for the club. From international championships and Diamond League success to outstanding performances at English Schools, it’s been a busy month with plenty of achievements to celebrate.

News

Commonwealth Games Underway
Monday marked the start of this year’s Commonwealth Games, and while several high-profile athletes have unfortunately had to withdraw through injury or illness, it’s been fantastic to see such a strong Shaftesbury Barnet Harriers presence representing their nations.
Representing England are Zharnel Hughes (200m & 4x100m Relay), Emily Newnham and Lina Nielsen (400m Hurdles), Kristian Imroth (3000m Steeplechase), Kimani Jack (High Jump), Renee Regis and Ebuka Nwokeji (4x100m Relay), and Alicia Regis (Mixed 4x400m Relay). Representing Montserrat is Sydney Mendes, competing in the Long Jump and 4x400m Relay.
With the championships still underway, here are some of the standout performances so far:

  • Sydney Mendes – Long Jump Qualification: 10th, 6.42m (Personal Best)
  • Kimani Jack – High Jump Final: Bronze Medal, 2.20m
  • Kristian Imroth – 3000m Steeplechase Final: 7th, 8:38.12

England Athletics Age Group Championships
Posie Shaw produced two outstanding performances in the Under-18 Girls’ 800m. She first set a new personal best of 2:09.45 in her heat to comfortably qualify for the final before returning to produce a fearless front-running race. Making her move with around 450 metres remaining, Posie opened up a decisive gap on the field and held on strongly to claim victory in 2:10.39.

Club Connect Relay Success at the London Diamond League
Shaftesbury had a strong presence at the London Diamond League on 18 July, with two teams competing in the Club Connect 4x100m Relays (Mixed U20 and Mixed U18).
Our U18 team produced an excellent performance, finishing 4th in a highly competitive field in a time of 44.57. The U20 team stole the show, taking victory in a commanding 43.07 to continue their impressive season.

European U18 Athletics Championships
Congratulations to Holly Ryan on an outstanding championships, reaching the finals of both the 200m and the Sprint Medley Relay. After finishing second in both her 200m heat and semi-final—setting a new personal best along the way—Holly went on to place an impressive 5th in the final. She also ran the second leg for Great Britain in the Sprint Medley Relay, helping the team secure second place in Round 1 before finishing 4th in the final.
Shaftesbury also celebrated success in the field with Chu Ononogbu in the discus. After throwing an excellent 52.48m in qualification to secure his place in the final, Chu unfortunately recorded no mark in the final but still finished an outstanding 12th in Europe.

News

Josh Kerr Smashes Mile World Record
British middle-distance star Josh Kerr produced a historic performance at the London Diamond League, breaking the men’s mile world record with a stunning time of 3:42.66. In front of a packed home crowd, Kerr took almost half a second off Hicham El Guerrouj’s record, which had stood for 27 years.
Kerr had made no secret of his ambition to rewrite the record books, and he delivered in spectacular fashion with a perfectly paced run. His achievement is one of the greatest moments in British athletics in recent years and further cements his place among the world’s best middle-distance runners.

Other Highlights from the London Diamond League
Josh Kerr’s world-record mile stole the headlines, but there were plenty of other outstanding performances in London. Keely Hodgkinson delighted the home crowd with victory in the women’s 800m, clocking 1:56.21 to claim her first Diamond League win of the season. The men’s 800m was one of the races of the day, with American Brandon Miller producing a lifetime best of 1:42.19 to edge Ireland’s Mark English, while Britain’s Max Burgin finished a close third in 1:43.30. In the women’s 200m, Olympic champion Julien Alfred continued her superb form with a meeting record of 21.66, ahead of Gabrielle Thomas. Britain’s Dina Asher-Smith finished fourth, with Amy Hunt close behind in fifth, both recording season’s best performances.
The packed London Stadium once again provided a fantastic atmosphere, with world-class performances giving fans plenty to look forward to ahead of the major championships later this summer.

Shaftesbury Barnet Harriers Athletes focus
Zharnel Hughes lined up in the men’s 200m and produced another impressive performance, running 20.04 seconds to finish amongst a world-class field. The British record holder showed his trademark strength on the home straight, continuing his excellent form ahead of the major championships.
Emily Newnham also represented the club in the women’s 400m hurdles, clocking 54.53 seconds against a high-quality international field. The talented young athlete continues to gain valuable experience at the highest level and is establishing herself as one of Britain’s most exciting quarter-mile hurdlers.

Dealing with Injury
It’s every athlete’s nightmare. Training is going well, consistency is building, and then injury strikes. Sometimes it starts as a quiet niggle that you dismiss as fatigue. Other times it arrives completely out of the blue. Either way, the emotional impact is often the same. Suddenly, you can’t do the thing you love, your plans for the season feel as though they’ve disappeared overnight, and the inevitable question creeps in: What did I do wrong?
Having dealt with several significant injuries throughout my running journey, I’ve learnt that the answer is rarely straightforward. Injury is a psychological challenge as much as a physical one, and everyone experiences it differently. Personally, I know I’m not the easiest person to be around when I’m injured. Running is such a big part of my routine that when it’s taken away, I can quickly find myself overthinking every symptom and searching for the fastest route back to training. With that in mind, here are a few things that have helped me.
Don’t panic. Most injuries improve with the right amount of rest. If, like me, you struggle to slow down, try reframing it as an opportunity to do the things you usually don’t have time for. Spend time with friends and family, read a book, or finally tackle those jobs you’ve been putting off. For me, that usually means cleaning or organising my flat. If I’m spending more time at home, I’d rather enjoy the space I’m in.
Don’t rush your return. It’s tempting to chase fitness because you have a race planned, but there will almost always be another opportunity. I’ve missed two London Marathons, yet the race was still there when I was healthy enough to return. Coming back too soon often leads to a longer recovery or more frustration than waiting a little longer. Trust that your body will tell you when it’s ready.
Seek professional advice. Over the years, I’ve built a trusted network of professionals and friends whose advice I value. If something doesn’t feel right, getting it assessed can provide reassurance and help guide your recovery. Where possible, I find scans particularly useful for understanding what’s going on and creating an appropriate rehabilitation plan, even though they can be expensive. One thing I’ve also learnt is that seeking too many opinions can sometimes become counterproductive. Every professional is likely to have a slightly different approach, so once you’ve found someone you trust, it’s often best to follow their guidance and commit to the rehabilitation plan.
Find another outlet. If your injury allows it, explore alternative forms of exercise. Not only can they help maintain fitness, but you might discover something you genuinely enjoy. After a stress fracture last year, I took up cycling and eventually bought a road bike—something I never would have done without being forced to step away from running.
Don’t neglect your nutrition. This is something I still have to remind myself of. My instinct when I’m injured is often to eat less because I’m training less. In reality, a healing body still needs plenty of energy and nutrients to recover. Good nutrition is just as important during recovery as it is during training.
Keep perspective. This is often the hardest part, but it’s also the most important. I try to see injury as an opportunity to rebuild, recover and address the things I might otherwise overlook. Rest allows your whole body—not just the injured area—to recover. I’ve also learnt that fitness comes back quicker than you think, and every setback teaches you something new about your body, your training and what works best for you.
Do what feels right for you. This is probably the most personal piece of advice I can give. If you feel like being around people, embrace it. If you need some time to yourself, that’s okay too. There isn’t a right or wrong way to navigate injury. Sometimes staying connected to the running community and celebrating other people’s successes can be motivating. Other times, it’s healthier to switch off completely. Whether that means taking a break from Strava or checking it every day, do whatever genuinely helps you. I’ve done both over the years, and I’ve learnt there isn’t a one-size-fits-all approach.
Injuries still suck, but they don’t define your season or your progress. Recovery takes patience, but you’ll come back stronger—not just physically, but mentally too. Hopefully my above experiences and coping mechanisms can help some of you now or in the future.

If you have any insights, experiences or anecdotes you’d like to share in a future newsletter, I’d love to hear from you. Please get in touch!

Shaftesbury Barnet Harriers Weekly Newsletter Wednesday 8 July 2026

I hope you are having a great week so far. For sports fans, it certainly feels like we are being spoilt at the moment, with a number of major tournaments taking place simultaneously. There is plenty to enjoy, follow, and get immersed in across the sporting world.

News

European Athletics U18 Championships
Congratulations to both Holly Ryan and Chu Ononogbu, who have been selected to represent Great Britain at the European Athletics U18 Championships in Italy. Holly will compete in the 200m following an outstanding personal best of 23.72, achieved in challenging windy conditions at the Cardiff meeting in June. Chu will represent GB in the Discus after setting a new PB of 57.49m, also recorded in Cardiff earlier this summer.

We wish them both the very best as they take on the best young athletes in Europe.

Prefontaine Classic, Eugene
Further afield, alongside the excitement of the World Cup, we saw some impressive performances across the Atlantic at the Prefontaine Classic in Eugene.

GB British performances
Keely Hodgkinson produced another encouraging performance in the women’s 800m, finishing second in a time of 1:56.73 after being narrowly edged out by Kenya’s Lilian Odira in the closing stages. This was another positive step in Hodgkinson’s return to top form, particularly after suffering a heavy fall in training just days before the race.
Amy Hunt also gained valuable experience competing in a world-class women’s 100m field. Although she narrowly missed out on a podium finish, her performance against some of the fastest sprinters in the world highlighted her continued progress. The women’s mile saw strong British performances from Georgia Hunter-Bell and Laura Muir, with both athletes delivering impressive runs. Hunter-Bell recorded a personal best of 4:18.52, while Muir clocked 4:22.31 for a season’s best.
In the men’s events, Zharnel Hughes finished sixth in the 200m, recording a time of 20.26, while Bizimana Yusuf placed 10th in a highly competitive 800m field with a time of 1:46.37. Away from the track, Lawrence Okoye secured seventh place in the Discus with a throw of 65.25m.

Standout performances
Melissa Jefferson-Wooden claimed victory in the women’s 100m in a time of 10.78, edging out ShaCarri Richardson by just 0.01 seconds. Tate Taylor delivered one of the biggest surprises of the meeting, defeating Olympic champion Letsile Tebogo to win the men’s 200m in 19.75. Nikki Hiltz took victory in the women’s mile with a world-leading 4:17.49, while Kayinsola Ajayi won a stacked men’s 100m field in 9.84. Tara Davis-Woodhall secured the women’s long jump title with a leap of 7.13m, winning by just one centimetre.

Volunteersappeal
Finally, we are once again appealing for more licensed officials and volunteers to support our StoneX fixtures.
If you are interested in getting involved and would like to find out more, please speak to James or Helen, or contact us at info@shaftesburybarnet.co.uk. Your support makes a huge difference in helping us continue to deliver successful events.

Happy July! I hope you’ve all had a great week so far and have been enjoying the welcome drop in temperatures.

News

Wanda Diamond League – Paris
The Paris Diamond League produced another outstanding evening of athletics despite sweltering conditions, with Diamond League records, world-leading performances and a host of national records and personal bests.
Among the standout performances, Busang Collen Kebinatshipi broke the Diamond League record in the men’s 400m with a world-leading 43.98, while Marileidy Paulino also set a Diamond League record and world lead of 48.48 in the women’s 400m.
The women’s 800m was one of the races of the night as Audrey Werro stormed to victory in 1:53.80, setting a Diamond League record, world lead, Swiss record and moving to third on the all-time list. Behind her, Anaïs Bourgoin set a French record, Sarah Billings broke the Australian record, while Femke Bol, Prudence Sekgodiso, Rénelle Lamote and Clara Liberman all recorded personal bests.
The women’s 1500m saw Georgia Hunter Bell claim victory in a world-leading performance, leading home a high-quality field in one of the fastest races of the season. Jessica Hull finished third, with several athletes recording season’s bests and personal bests.
In the men’s 5000m, Yomif Kejelcha ran a season’s best 12:47.84 to defeat Birhanu Balew and Graham Blanks, with four athletes finishing inside 12:52.
Elsewhere, Trayvon Bromell upset Olympic champion Noah Lyles to win the men’s 100m in 9.91, Marco Aropimpressed with 1:41.84 in the men’s 800m, Cameron Myers claimed the men’s 1500m in 3:28.00, and Armand Duplantis cleared 6.13m to win the pole vault before making three attempts at a new world record of 6.32m.
