Shaftesbury Barnet Harriers Weekly Newsletter Wednesday 8 July 2026

I hope you are having a great week so far. For sports fans, it certainly feels like we are being spoilt at the moment, with a number of major tournaments taking place simultaneously. There is plenty to enjoy, follow, and get immersed in across the sporting world.

News

European Athletics U18 Championships
Congratulations to both Holly Ryan and Chu Ononogbu, who have been selected to represent Great Britain at the European Athletics U18 Championships in Italy. Holly will compete in the 200m following an outstanding personal best of 23.72, achieved in challenging windy conditions at the Cardiff meeting in June. Chu will represent GB in the Discus after setting a new PB of 57.49m, also recorded in Cardiff earlier this summer.

We wish them both the very best as they take on the best young athletes in Europe.

Prefontaine Classic, Eugene
Further afield, alongside the excitement of the World Cup, we saw some impressive performances across the Atlantic at the Prefontaine Classic in Eugene.

GB British performances
Keely Hodgkinson produced another encouraging performance in the women’s 800m, finishing second in a time of 1:56.73 after being narrowly edged out by Kenya’s Lilian Odira in the closing stages. This was another positive step in Hodgkinson’s return to top form, particularly after suffering a heavy fall in training just days before the race.
Amy Hunt also gained valuable experience competing in a world-class women’s 100m field. Although she narrowly missed out on a podium finish, her performance against some of the fastest sprinters in the world highlighted her continued progress. The women’s mile saw strong British performances from Georgia Hunter-Bell and Laura Muir, with both athletes delivering impressive runs. Hunter-Bell recorded a personal best of 4:18.52, while Muir clocked 4:22.31 for a season’s best.
In the men’s events, Zharnel Hughes finished sixth in the 200m, recording a time of 20.26, while Bizimana Yusuf placed 10th in a highly competitive 800m field with a time of 1:46.37. Away from the track, Lawrence Okoye secured seventh place in the Discus with a throw of 65.25m.

Standout performances
Melissa Jefferson-Wooden claimed victory in the women’s 100m in a time of 10.78, edging out ShaCarri Richardson by just 0.01 seconds. Tate Taylor delivered one of the biggest surprises of the meeting, defeating Olympic champion Letsile Tebogo to win the men’s 200m in 19.75. Nikki Hiltz took victory in the women’s mile with a world-leading 4:17.49, while Kayinsola Ajayi won a stacked men’s 100m field in 9.84. Tara Davis-Woodhall secured the women’s long jump title with a leap of 7.13m, winning by just one centimetre.
