ZHARNEL HUGHES 100M RACE IN THE UK CHAMPIONSHIPS  Even for a city renowned for its damp weather, the fierce downpour that hit Manchester during the men’s 100m final on the first day of the UK Championships was something to behold. As the heavens opened shortly after 7pm on Saturday 8 July, spectators and officials reached for their umbrellas or ran for cover. As the rain fell, though, ZHARNEL HUGHES reign began as British 100m champion as he sped to victory in (10.03 w0.0). The following photographs were sent to us from ENGLAND ATHLETICS, and were taken by GETTY IMAGES.

The sequence of photographs start at the midway point, through to the finish, and finally ZHARNEL embracing the rain after his outstanding win.

WHAT DOES THE FUTURE OF ATHLETICS LOOK LIKE?  The following article was published on the Athletics Weekly website recently.

This athletics summer might be at the half-way point, but a look back through the output of the AW social media channels and website, shows a huge level of interest and engagement in the sport – that there is a feeling of momentum gathering. It all served as a welcome reminder that all is not entirely unwell with athletics and that the potential for growth is very real. There’s just one, key problem. For that growth to happen, the audience is going to have to widen. As athletics fans we are able to gorge on this feast but how many people outside of the sport’s bubble are aware of events unfolding? Changing that is no easy task, with every single sport on the planet vying for the attention of not just the next generation but also potential new recruits.

How do you start doing it? One person trying to come up with an answer is LAURA HILLYARD. An athlete turned events director and producer, since beginning to hone her craft at the Loughborough. International 10 years ago she has worked across some of athletics’ very biggest showcases – from the Commonwealth Games to the Olympics. However, she also decided to step outside of her favourite sport to see what others were doing. This led to her working within the British Basketball League (BBL) and, in particular, revamping the London Lions team Game Nights at the Copper Box Arena and Wembley Arena. The lessons she has learned through doing so, she believes, could help athletics to re- establish the foothold it once had on the sporting landscape. HILLYARD was at both Night of the 10,000m PBs and Loughborough International back in May. She agrees both provided reasons to be cheerful but she also couldn’t escape the feeling that they were already preaching to the choir. There should be more focus, she believes, on those new disciples. “What Highgate has done brilliantly is to tap into a community within the sport and it has reignited a fire within people to get involved,” says HILLYARD, who can still be found most days at London’s Mile End track, training under the guidance of coach CHRIS ZAH, as well as regularly competing at National Athletics League meetings.

“But the community being tapped into – ie the running community – was one that already existed. It attracts distance running people, distance running brands, but does distance running actually attract kids? I didn’t see many running around. And how many people in the crowd at Loughborough weren’t already connected to athletics in some way? “I think the events that are going to attract new people to the sport will be the sprints, the explosive stuff – the stuff that today’s kids have that short attention span for and that they’re doing in school. No kid is running for 10,000m at school. If we want to inspire the next generation, we need to activate events that kids are familiar with.” A key part of that process will be education, which applies to prospective spectators and fans of all ages. While there will always be those in the crowd who know everything from the hurdles to the high jump, in the current climate how well are the ins and outs of an athletics meeting really explained to the watching public? “Not everyone automatically knows what’s going on,” says HILLYARD of an area in which she has seen basketball excel. “When there’s a three-pointer, for example [a basket scored from beyond the three-point line], we’ll play a specific sting to the crowd, which is a cue for them to shout and show three fingers. We’ll do the same for various other aspects of the game but it’s explained to the crowd before play begins and it makes them better understand what’s going on. “In athletics, we could be replicating that with things like the start of the 100m, too, where we encourage the crowd to shush themselves rather than the stadium announcer doing it. It makes the spectators feel like an active part of it, in the same way as clapping for the long jump does.” This is all part of what’s called “the show” in basketball. The game is the performance and Hillyard feels athletics would do well to think of a meeting in the same way.

Last year’s Commonwealth Games was a success story, with crowds flocking to and lapping up all of the athletics sessions – even the ones which only featured low-key qualifying heats. There were activation areas on the way to the stands, clever use of music and then presenters in specific areas of the stadium whose job it was to showcase different aspects of the action and to activate the crowd. The fans need to be welcomed into the fold, to be given a reason to care about what they are watching – the equivalent of being the 12th player on the football pitch – which brings us to another crucial aspect of an event. The storytelling. Rather than waiting until the athletes have arrived on the start line to highlight who they are and what they have achieved, could there be snippets about them broadcast to the crowd in advance? What about a drip feed and hyping up of the current crop of stars across social media in the days leading up to the event?

As HILLYARD points out, there are content creators in the community chomping at the bit to be involved. She feels more could be done to make their skills feel valued by the sport before they are lost to another sport or industry. “Tell the crowd what the athletes have done, where they’re from, build that anticipation up and up and up, perhaps encourage the crowd to choose a side” she says. “A big challenge is the duration that you’ve got to keep that level of entertainment up for but you could do that easily if the audio is good across the arena, and you could have someone conducting that whole thing. “It just takes someone stepping back from the competition schedule, and going: ‘Where are the downtimes? And what are we going to do in the downtimes?’ Because that’s where sport presentation is paramount – it’s what’s happening when the sport isn’t happening, because that’s when you lose people. We’re just using what’s been tried and tested before.” There is a major opportunity to come with the London Diamond League returning this weekend (July 23). To upscale events doesn’t necessarily have to take vast sums of money, which UK Athletics currently doesn’t have in any case. However, HILLYARD feels more financial support could be out there for events and in turn the athletes – again, if organisers start to think a little differently.

“In a similar way to cycling, there are people in the running community who have a lot of money and are engaged with our sport, whether that be personally or via friends. But are we engaging them about legacies in the right way?” she says. “It occurred to me on my Sunday run before the Loughborough International, look at the number of lower league football clubs which will have advertising from smaller local businesses around the pitch. What’s to stop that happening with an athletics track?” HILLYARD also cites what cricket has done with The Hundred – a new format of the game introduced two years ago which has successfully brought in a new audience without detracting from the “core” product. “What The Hundred have done well is to engage brands that may have not necessarily previously aligned with cricket and I imagine that’s because they’ve educated them on its sports principals. I fear we are quick to assume everyone understands our sport. We also don’t open ourselves up to aligning with current cultural trends that brands would be attracted to.” The first step towards success is to persuade people to come through the door at all, which involves shouting about the event and constantly underlining why it’s worth buying a ticket.

“My role with the Lions was, first of all, to get the product up to a level where people want to return,” says HILLYARD. “Then we spent money on marketing and elevated the level again. That way you retain more people. You evaluate what works, doesn’t work, you put concepts that contribute to the elevation in front of potential sponsors and you keep doing that. “With athletics we focus a lot on quantity, not quality, and that’s across all of the sport.” Even the most traditional of athletics fans will acknowledge that the time for change is very much upon us. The sport simply can’t afford to keep doing the same thing. Highgate has been a success because event director BEN POCHEE set about doing something different. Look at the current demographic of your average athletics crowd and it’s clear the younger part of the population are not being incentivised. There are many individuals who want to be involved in helping make that transformation but there are fragments of change scattered here and there. Athletics’ great strength – and weakness – is how vast it is and how many events it encompasses. Some joined up thinking could go a long way. “I think the problem in athletics is every single event seems to be trying to reinvent themselves,” says HILLYARD, who points to the fact that the BBL is appointing a Team Services Director, whose sole role is to ensure that the game day delivery has a level of consistency across all the clubs, both in terms of the sport and the show.

“No-one’s working collaboratively. Everyone’s got little pockets of ideas but there is nothing to pool these ideas, to start creating a template or a best practice. Whether that’s done through federations or not, I’m not sure, but it would definitely help to gather it all. “I was listening to a podcast the other day featuring the Scottish couple who have just bought the Caledonia Gladiators basketball and they said: ‘Wouldn’t you rather be part of a team delivering something bigger rather than just being an individual delivering something much smaller? And I think that’s where athletics mindset needs to go. “It’s an individual sport and everyone’s individually competitive, perhaps this personality trait is a contributing problem, but it can’t be a competition between each other if we want this sport to grow. “We are a performance sport, which can come down to millimetres and fractions of a second. To survive in this day and age, it has to have personality, and it has to have a platform. Athletics has lost its personality and its platform.”

MEGAN KEITH AND CHARLES HICKS WIN 5000M GOLD IN ESPOO  The following article was published on the Athletics Weekly website recently.

The future of British distance running is in good hands if results from the European Under-23 Championships in Espoo, Finland, are anything to go by. Firstly MEGAN KEITH struck gold in the women’s 5000m on Thursday evening (July 13) and then, less than 24 hours later, CHARLES HICKS won the men’s 5000m title on Friday morning. Both athletes won in emphatic style after running away from their rivals in the closing stages. KEITH clocked (15:34.33) to beat MARIA FORERO of Spain by nine seconds, while HICKS eased away from host nation hope EEMIL HELANDER to win by five seconds in (13:35.07). Behind, WILL BARNICOAT took bronze in the men’s race but there was heartache for ELOISE WALKER in the women’s race as she broke clear with GB team-mate KEITH in the latter stages and was still in second place with 150m to go but struggled in the home straight, falling due to exhaustion with 20 metres to go before getting up to finish fifth.

The European Cross-Country Championships in Turin last December proved a good form guide to the action in Espoo. At that event seven months ago, KEITH took under-23 silver behind NADIA BATTOCLETTI, HICKS won the under-23 men’s title and FORERO captured the under-20 women’s crown.

KEITH said: “I told myself when I make a move (with just over 2km to go), I needed to make it decisive and I’m really proud that’s what I did. I’m really happy to come away with the win, as we knew the race was going to be unpredictable. “I looked at the screen around 300m to go, and hoped to have enough to keep going, as I saw I had made a gap. I ran at this track last year, and was disappointed how I ran, but I’ve been working hard since then and gained a lot of experience and I’m really happy with how it has gone.” For KEITH, victory was sweeter still after she missed bronze by just two hundredths of a second at the European Under-20 Championships two years ago.

HICKS’ victory came just five days after finishing fourth in the 5000m at the UK Championships. The Stanford student has also recently agreed to join the Nike Bowerman Track Club in the United States and here in Espoo he breezed away impressively from the competition to take gold with gun-to-tape front-running tactics.

DAVE BEDFORD’S 10000m 50TH ANNIVERSARY – The oldest British Championships record in the book has stood the test of time for an amazing half century. Fifty years ago on 13 July 1973 .at Crystal Palace, the British Championships (officially then the AAA) staged the Olympic Trials
At the time, EDWARD HEATH was Prime Minister and Puppy Love by DONNY OSMOND was the No.1 record in the music charts.

As he had not publicised any record attempt or shown any form that suggested anything special was likely, only 3500 fans were present on the Friday night for a programme of predominantly heats but clearly he had a target as he powered through 1600m in (4:17.4). Surprisingly as he was operating at (26:45) pace, he still had four takers. Even at 3000m (8:08.4) – the second fastest ever split after his Olympic opening, TONY SIMMONS, SEPPO TUOMINEN and BERNIE PLAIN remained. The latter two soon dropped off but at 4000m, SIMMONS surprised BEDFORD by going by and leading before BEDFORD went ahead again and pushed on through the fastest ever halfway time of (13:39.4) with SIMMONS (13:41.0) also running a time previously unsurpassed even by CLARKE and BEDFORD. At 6000m he lapped fellow International cross-country winner MIKE TAGG, who tried to briefly help BEDFORD. From 6400m to 8400m and needing 67 second laps, BEDFORD astonishingly reeled off five successive exact 67.0 laps. At 8000m, he had been 15 seconds up on VIREN’S equivalent but clearly was not going to finish like VIREN did but he had a 19 second buffer at 9km and perhaps more importantly was 10 seconds quicker at that point than CLARKE had ever run. While he had slowed to a 67.8 four out, knowing the record was almost certainly his, his last three got faster and a 60.8 final circuit was wildly received by a stadium of 10,000m aficionados as he took over seven seconds off VIREN’S world mark and 16 seconds off his own British (and former European) record (27:30.80). It was the first world record set in London by a Briton since CHRIS CHATAWAY beat VLADIMIR KUTS in an epic 5000m in 1954.

SIMMONS (28:19.4) and PLAIN (28:30.2) survived their suicidal starts to set PBs despite slowing 40 seconds on their second half’s BEDFORD’S lap times were: 63.0, 64.4, 64.9, 65.1, 65.8, 66.4, 66.2, 66.2, 66.6, 66.0, 65.4, 66.0, 66.8, 66.2, 67.2, 67.8, 67.0, 67.0, 67.0, 67.0, 67.0, 67.8, 66.0, 65.2 and 60.8. In the press conference he said: “I planned this from about a week ago. When I left home I was nervous. I’ve been confident in the past and it has not come off.  I had four weeks of really good training and it began to click and last week I knew it was on. Recently I did a session of 2 x 6 laps and I did 6:24 and 6:25 with a jog in between and I wanted to go through in 6:30 tonight (he did 6:29.6). I was conscious of the lap times and got worried with 8 or 9 laps to go as it was feeling quite hard but it should be at that pace! I knew if I kept to 67s I should get the record and kept pushing them as hard as I could.”

This is recording of DAVE’S historic run https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6TFV0jjRrug

DAVE’S coach was BOB PARKER, who was a very good athletics coach but it’s clear that, to those who worked with him, he was so much more than that. PARKER, inducted into the England Athletics Hall of Fame in 2010 at the age of 80 for his services to coaching, led ALISON WYETH to two Olympics, three World Championships and a 3000m Commonwealth bronze medal, while two-time Olympian MARA YAMAUCHI credits him for laying the foundations of the international marathon success of her later career.

A few years earlier, in 1973, he enjoyed what was perhaps his finest hour when he guided DAVID BEDFORD to the world record over 10,000m. “I joined Shaftesbury Harriers in 1964 and he started coaching me in 1965,” says BEDFORD. “BOB became a second father and his wife SYLVIA a second mother. In truth, they had more influence on my development and life than my parents. “BOB had previously coached some of the older Shaftesbury lads and he was still racing himself. I do remember him running the Poly Marathon in the late 60s with me supporting him on a push bike. Up until the 1970s he was still warming up and down with me at training sessions and overseeing fartlek sessions on Hampstead Heath. “He was always there for all of his athletes. Where he got the energy from no-one knows.” He adds: “I have never heard anyone say a bad word about BOB. I had my first beer with him and I will certainly have my last still thinking of him, ever grateful for his love, care and friendship. “When I started being coached by him I was the 73rd best junior in the English Schools Cross Country Championships and, nine years later, I broke the world record for 10,000m.”

PARKER worked full-time as a builder but always made sure he was on hand to help his athletes and, come Tuesday and Thursday evenings, his house in Harrow was a hive of athletic activity, representing as it did the meeting point from where training sessions would start and finish.

A fond recollection from WYETH demonstrates the lengths to which he was willing to go for his charges. “We used to meet at his house, warmed up by running to the track, did our session and then warmed down by running back to his house,” she says. “On a Thursday, we’d run road reps from his house so basically we used to take over the place. “We were all in and out of the loo all the time so he even had a downstairs toilet built so that he could accommodate us, with everyone queuing up in his house! “He did it himself and it was all because he was fed up of waiting for us lot at the training sessions!” She adds: “He was a really kind-hearted person who also gave us plenty of hard training which helped us progress.
“The Parkside AC women he coached won the national cross country team title eight years in a row (1989-1996). He brought us together as a great team that wanted to run for him and his wife SYLVIA.”
YAMAUCHI also has vivid memories of the Parker residence. “His home was a real base for a lot of athletes,” she says. “His living room was covered in photos of athletes he’d coached. “He had, on his wall, the shield for the national team title and it was there for such a long time that he had a kind of shield-shaped faded patch on his wallpaper, because it was there for 364 days a year for several years.

“He had the stars like DAVE BEDFORD and ALISON WYETH but his group had a lot of depth and he was always welcoming to newcomers.” She adds: “He just loved helping young people develop. When you’re a young person you face a lot of decisions about your life – not just about running – but he was very supportive to all the young athletes he was coaching in those sorts of things. “He didn’t have any children of his own but it was almost like we were all his family. And, of course, it was all completely voluntary. He gave so much of his life, wisdom and energy to helping young athletes.”

BOBS passed away on 20 January 2018, and his funeral was on the 7 February at Hendon Cemetery and Crematorium, and the chapel was absolutely full, with over 50 people paying their respects outside.

BETH POTTER NOW SITS TOP OF THE WORLD TRIATHLON CHAMPIONSHIP RANKINGS BETH POTTER won silver at the World Triathlon Championship Super Sprint in Hamburg last Sunday. POTTER, 31, was 10 seconds behind France’s CASSANDRE BEAUGRAND, who won in 21 minutes and 35 seconds. The Super Sprint format is a 300m swim, 7.5km bike ride and a 1.75km run.

POTTER finished sixth in the previous race in Cagliari, having won the opening event of the series in Abu Dhabi. “I woke up feeling a bit ill today actually and I’m proud of how I stuck it out and got through the rounds,” said POTTER. “Today I was back where I belong.”

A bronze medallist at the 2022 Commonwealth Games, POTTER won gold in the 2019 European Championships and lifted the 2022 Arena Games Triathlon Series title.

CURRENT DISTRIBUTION OF SHAFTESBURY INFORMATION Currently I notify members (by email) using “MailChimp”. The reason I changed, was in November 2017 “Gmail” put a limit of 100 addresses that users could send to in a 24-hour period, and currently I send to approximately 850 members each issue.

On seeking technical advice “MailChimp” was recommended as the best way for SBH to go forward. There is one thing you should be aware off is that when you receive an email from me, the footer at the bottom has 4 options, of which one is “Unsubscribe Me From List”. Could I ask you not to select this as if you do you will be automatically removed from my distribution list.

UK CHAMPIONSHIPS ROUNDUP  The following article was published on the Athletics Weekly website recently, the following was a part of that article.

DAY 1 ZHARNEL HUGHES defies Mancunian monsoon on day one of the UK Champs at Sportcity

Even for a city renowned for its damp weather, the fierce downpour that hit Manchester during the men’s 100m final on the first day of the UK Championships was something to behold. As the heavens opened shortly after 7pm on Saturday (July 8), spectators and officials reached for their umbrellas or ran for cover. As the rain fell, though, ZHARNEL HUGHES reign began as British 100m champion as he sped to victory in (10.03 w0.0). The 27-year-old broke LINFORD CHRISTIE’S 30-year-old British 100m record with (9.83) in New York last month and the former record-holder was among the crowd as the Anguilla-born Brit gave further proof that he’s in the form of his life. Behind, REECE PRESCOD was satisfied to get the second automatic selection spot in the monsoon-like conditions with (10.14), while EUGENE AMO-DADZIE showed his recent (9.93) clocking wasn’t a one-off by taking bronze with (10.18). JEREMIAH AZU was fourth in (10.28) after having earlier run a Welsh record of (10.08) narrowly behind HUGHES in the semi-finals, whereas CJ UJAH, returning from an anti-doping ban, was fifth in (10.31). “It means everything to me to be British champion,” said HUGHES, stopping only briefly to talk to the media given the conditions. “I train in these conditions sometimes in Jamaica, but I am soaked here. These conditions are the worst ever. “It has been a long journey to get the title back that I last won in 2015. I thank my team, my coach and everyone who came to support me. I’ll come back for the 200m tomorrow and hope the conditions are better.”

The other women’s sprint final of the day, the 100m hurdles, was a far more straightforward affair which took place in kinder conditions. British record-holder CINDY SEMBER was a convincing winner as she clocked (12.98 w1.6) to also seal her Budapest place, the Commonwealth bronze medallist coming home ahead of PBs from ISABEL WAKEFIELD (13.05) and MARLI JESSOP (13.30).

Moments earlier JAMES WEST also showed a fine turn of speed as he out-kicked EMILE CAIRESS, TOM MORTIMER and CHARLES HICKS to win the men’s 5000m in (13:42.03). The rain was not as heavy as the runners covered their 12.5 laps of the Sportcity track, but West’s post-race chat with AW was almost aborted as the rain and wind nearly blew caused the media tent to collapse.

After years of combining part-time building work with athletics, SCOTT LINCOLN became a full-time athlete for the first time last winter and it’s paying off as he finds himself in the form of his life. At times he admits he is twiddling his thumbs from time to time. “I’ve watched everything on YouTube and am on to Netflix now,” he jokes. But generally it gives him an invaluable opportunity to fully rest between training sessions and ahead of competitions. He threw (21.10m) at the European Team Championships a fortnight ago in Poland but was disappointed as he felt he was capable of more. In Manchester on Saturday he took his 16th British title – indoors or out – with (20.46m) in wet conditions early on Saturday afternoon ahead of YOUCEF ZATAT’S (18.78m) and PATRICK SWAN’S (17.59m). LINCOLN had mixed feelings about the rain. “I wasn’t exactly doing a rain dance to get it to shower,” he said, but added that the circle at Sportcity is usually better for shot putters when it’s a little wet.

NICK PERCY led the discus with (61.26m) in the second round but LAWRENCE OKOYE bounced back in the third to take the lead with (61.68m). “It wasn’t a great performance but it was a good result,” said OKOYE, who is now based in Loughborough and enjoying a busy summer of competitions ahead of the World Champs in Budapest as he tries to build on the brilliant form he showed in 2022 to win bronze at the European Championships.

DAY 2 In the quest to challenge for medals at the World Championships this summer, ZHARNEL HUGHES s was briefly hospitalised earlier this year after a particularly gruelling workout. HUGHES was training in Jamaica under GLEN MILLS – the man who guided USAIN BOLT – and had to be given medical help after a tough session of 300m reps. Such hard work has led to him being in the form of his life and on Sunday (July 9) in Manchester he became the first man to seal a 100m and 200m double at the UK Championships since MARLON DEVONISH in 2007. After winning the 100m on Saturday during a freak storm in (10.03), he cruised to victory in the 200m in (19.77) a time that would have broken JOHN REGIS’S British record if it hadn’t been for a 2.3m/sec tailwind. JOE FERGUSON was runner-up with (20.43) with JONA EFOLOKO third in (20.45) and ADAM GEMILI fourth in (20.53). “I am the fastest man in the world and it didn’t happen overnight,” said HUGHES. “It took a lot of hard work. If you were to see some of the clips of me training you will see why I’m so happy with the results. “I push myself tirelessly. I ended up in hospital (earlier this year after training) because I couldn’t breathe and my sugar dropped a little bit. I was forcing myself to hit the times and the recovery times. “That day was a difficult day for training. I over-exerted myself. I didn’t pass out but I couldn’t recover properly and every time I tried to get up I couldn’t stand up for long.

“I’m grateful to see the rewards happening for the hard work. We still have time to go and I can get a lot faster. I know I’m in the shape to run 19 seconds, that’s what is exciting. It can come again.”

LINFORD CHRISTIE, the former UK 100m record-holder, was among the spectators in Manchester and he had some congratulatory words for HUGHES. Coming up in a fortnight, the 27-year-old sprinter will take on FRED KERLEY, NOAH LYLES, ERRIYON KNIGHTON and others at the Diamond League in London before topping up his fitness ahead of Budapest with more hard training sessions.

BUDAPEST ON COURSE FOR UNFORGETTABLE WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS  The following article was published on the Athletics Weekly website recently.

Hungarian hosts are confident of putting on a brilliant global event and we also take a look at World Athletics’ historical museum in Budapest. With less than 50 days to go before Central Europe’s first World Athletics Championships in Hungary’s capital Budapest, British fans are on course to provide the most overseas spectators at the event next month. Hungarians will of course provide the most with around 90,000 having bought tickets at the beginning of July but Britain (17,494), Germany (14,088), USA (9,794), France (6,673), Spain (6,540), Ireland (5,572), Netherlands (5193), Czech Republic (4584), Italy (4,265) and Poland (4,211) complete the top 10. Hungary does not have a huge athletics fan base and while their athletes are on an upward curve (gaining promotion at last month’s European Team Championships), they have relatively few medal chances, The hammer provides their best hope with Bence Halász, a world and European medalist in recent years.

While the organisers are confident of eventually selling out, there are still tickets remaining with some great deals and it is possible to get a ‘Superheroes’ package for all nine days at the championships for $174 which is significantly less than a good single ticket will cost for the following year’s Olympics athletics programme. While the previous Europeans took place in a big stadium – the Nepstadium – that has now been replaced by a football stadium – the Puskas Arena. The venue for this August is therefore a brand new stadium beside the Danube in a previous wasteland area. It looks a tremendous stadium of a perfect size and not too far out of the city with most arriving by tram though the VIPs will be arriving by boat along the river. It will certainly be a better atmosphere and numbers than at the 2022 World Championships in Eugene.

The CEO of the organisers, Budapest 2023 Zrt, NEMETH BALAZS, is a former well-known television presenter but also a (1:54) 800m runner who has also run marathons. He is not only keen for it to be better than recent events, but also the best World Championships in history. He hopes this will be created by a fast Mondo track (the same as used in Tokyo 2021) together with enthusiastic capacity crowds and the post championships legacy.

The Hungarian event will be the first World Athletics Championship to embrace the World Athletics Sustainability Strategy and its LOC are driven by two main legacy goals: To create a health and well-being legacy by motivating Hungarians to be more active through the incentive programmes and to create a tangible urban regeneration legacy with the development of the new National Athletics Centre which will serve as a competition and training facility in the future as well as a new green park and recreational area for the local community to enjoy. The stadium has geothermal heating and cooling system and energy efficient lighting. While the stadium will hold 30,000 for the championships, post-games the top tier of seating will be removed and converted to a 15,000 capacity stadium with a running track for the general public and trees replacing where the top level of seating is.

As throws are particularly important to Hungarian athletes there are six different hammer and discus circles on the warm-up track, at various angles so they can always have a favourable wind whatever the direction. The organisers environmentally friendly attitude is illustrated by the constructors having an environmental officer to ensure that the local habitat such as owls, swans and beavers were not impacted too much by the building. Heroes Square where the marathon starts and finishes, the marathon course is fundamentally four laps of 10km starting and finishing in the magnificent Heroes Square with a mostly very wide and straight avenue down to the Danube, across the famous Swing Bridge and through a tunnel then a small loop of Buda beside the castle. It is a reasonably flat route – avoiding Buda’s very tough inclines with inclines (such as across the bridge or in the tunnel under the castle) rather than any hills.

I have been fortunate enough to previously attend in Budapest a World Cross-Country Championships in 1994, a European Championships in 1998 (where GB topped the medal table) and a World Masters Championships in 2014 and it’s definitely a fantastic city to visit at any time but a global championships will be particularly special magnified with a strong British team and a huge number of UK supporters.

CASTER SEMENYA WINS APPEAL AT EUROPEAN COURT OF HUMAN RIGHTS  The following article was published on the Athletics Weekly website recently. Photograph taken by MARK SHEARMAN.

South African athlete was discriminated against by rules that forced her to lower her testosterone levels, according to a judgement from the ECHR. The European Court of Human Rights has ruled in favour of CASTER SEMENYA in her appeal against World Athletics’ rules relating to testosterone levels.

SEMENYA has been unable to compete at her best distance of 800m since the introduction of limits by the global governing body on testosterone levels which would have forced her to use medication. Legal challenges in the past to the Court of Arbitration for Sport and the Swiss Federal Supreme Court were rejected, but the ECHR says her human rights have been violated. In a judgement published on Tuesday (July 11), the ECHR found the Swiss government did not protect the athlete from being discriminated against when its Supreme Court refused to overturn a decision by the Court of Arbitration for Sport which upheld World Athletics’ rules governing the participation of athletes with DSD. The statement read: “The Court found in particular that the applicant had not been afforded sufficient institutional and procedural safeguards in Switzerland to allow her to have her complaints examined effectively, especially since her complaints concerned substantiated and credible claims of discrimination as a result of her increased testosterone level caused by differences of sex development.”

SEMENYA, who was born with differences of sexual development, argued that taking medication could put her health in danger and that the ruling, which prevented her defending her Olympic 800m title in 2021, denied athletes with DSD the right to rely on their natural abilities. In a statement, the global governing body said: “World Athletics notes the judgement of the deeply divided Chamber of the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR). We remain of the view that the DSD regulations are a necessary, reasonable and proportionate means of protecting fair competition in the female category as the Court of Arbitration for Sport and Swiss Federal Tribunal both found, after a detailed and expert assessment of the evidence. “The case was filed against the state of Switzerland, rather than World Athletics. We will liaise with the Swiss Government on the next steps and, given the strong dissenting views in the decision, we will be encouraging them to seek referral of the case to the ECHR Grand Chamber for a final and definitive decision. In the meantime, the current DSD regulations, approved by the World Athletics Council in March 2023, will remain in place.”

CHRISTOPHER KIRWIN – Congratulations to CHRISTOPHER who has volunteered as one of the timekeepers on 227 occasions out of the 271 at the Tamar Trails Parkrun since its inception. Due to a long standing knee injury he is unable to take part in the run or to volunteer with other roles. He has concentrated on timekeeping, also training newcomers and establishing good working relationships with run directors. especially training new RDs, as well as with the volunteer giving out the finish tokens – essential that the TKs are in agreement with the token donor.
He has missed a few Saturdays due recovery from fracturing five vertebrae and have occasional Saturdays when he has had schools athletics championships, in which he has been invited to present certificates/medals. He has being Devon Schools AA Chainman for over 20 years before he retired from teaching – also with his wife, has had one or two trips to Spain each year to visit our son who is resident out there. HIGH-FLYING HUGHES KEEPS FEET ON THE GROUND  The following article was published on the Athletics Weekly website recently.

British sprinter exudes quiet confidence going into rest of the season after breaking LINFORD CHRISTIE’S British 100m record. ZHARNEL HUGHES is known for his love of flying, but after breaking the British 100m record last weekend in New York he still has his feet firmly on the ground. The 27-year-old, a budding pilot in his spare time, clocked (9.83) to break LINFORD CHRISTIE’S 30-year-old national mark. Yet he kept his post-race celebrations low-key – with some Jamaican food and a stroll around Times Square – and is determined to take the rest of the season step by step as he tackles the UK Championships in Manchester next weekend, the Diamond League in London on July 23 and World Championships in Budapest in August.

He also says he will be content if his (9.83) remains his best time at the end of the summer, too. This doesn’t mean he isn’t ambitious, though. He has his sights set on winning medals. “You don’t always see the fastest times coming out in the finals,” says HUGHES, who is clearly not one for brash predictions. “You just need to be a part of the rumble and if you can be patient and be the most relaxed person in the field then anything is possible.”

The Anguillan-born Brit is coached by GLEN MILLS, the same man who guided USAIN BOLT. HUGHES sometimes bumps into BOLT as they use the same gym, but he hasn’t seen him since the UK record-breaking run. Neither has he had the chance to speak to the man whose record he beat. “When Linford did it (9.87) in 1993) I wasn’t even in existence yet,” he says. “But it’s something that was always on my mind. I always wanted to break the British record eventually and I’m just happy to have done it. “When I ran it in New York, I didn’t know what time I ran until I turned around and saw the clock. I just knew I had executed a good race. There’s a lot still to fix. It felt fast but I didn’t know I broke the record. Looking back at old clips of LINFORD back in his days is something I look at.”

Despite winning the European 200m title in 2022, HUGHES says he has attacked this season with renewed hunger after a slightly disappointing year. “Last season it made me a bit more hungry,” he explains. “I got back and I didn’t want to do any vacation. I just wanted to get back into work. I only took two weeks off from the season just to spend a little time with the family. And it was back to work. “Coach MILLS can be hard at times. But he’s honestly one of the most genuine, down to earth people you’ll ever come across and he wants the best for all of his athletes and I think I’m just happy to be coming to my full potential now with his guidance.” HUGHES believes there is room for improvement too. “We haven’t really started much speed work as yet but this is just speed endurance I’m running off and I’m pretty sure come late July and early August Coach MILLS will start to sharpen up all the bits that need to be sharpened.”

STACEY GONZALES BETANCOURT  Congratulations to STACEY whose has had an outstanding 2023. The highlight was winning a Silver Medal in the Womens 45-49 Pole Vault (3.00m), at the World Indoor Championships in Poland last April. STACEY just missed out on the Gold Medal on count-back, and following the Championships she was ranked No.4 in Europe and No.6 in the World.

The outdoor season started at the LICC at the StoneX Stadium, vaulting (2.90m), which ranked her No.1 in Europe and No.3 in the World. The remainder of this year looks very promising, with the possibility of improving her personal best of (3.00m), and then in 2024 moving up to the 50-54 age-group.

60 YEARS OF THE BRITISH MILERS CLUB  The following article was published on the Athletics Weekly website recently. Photograph taken by MARK SHEARMAN of SEB COE in 1983 at Cosford.

The British Milers’ Club was created in 1963 and its origins can be traced back to the pages of AW. Exasperated with the poor performances of middle-distance runners at the time, the endurance coach FRANK HORWILL wrote to this magazine and his mission statement appeared in the June 29 issue that year. “A number of Senior AAA Honorary Coaches,” he said, “wish to start a specialist club for milers (male and female), to be known as the British Milers’ Club. The emblem for this Club will be a Union Jack mounted above a runner.” The letter ignited debate and led to the creation of the ‘BMC’, a specialist organisation which has given training and racing opportunities to generations of leading domestic runners for the past 60 years. HORWILL passed away in 2012, but the legacy of that letter is still very much alive and well.

SEB COE, president of World Athletics, says: “In 1963, when FRANK HORWILL decided he should do something about the slight decline in British distance running, little did he know then just what an impact his actions would have. Thirteen years later, it was at a BMC meeting in 1976 that I made one of my first big breakthroughs over 800m. I went to Stretford as a teenager with a PB of (1:51.8), but came away from there with a lifetime best of (1:47.7), breaking the BMC record in the process. But I am just one of literally thousands of athletes to have benefitted from the BMC.” COE, who won Olympic 1500m titles in 1980 and 1984 and broke world records at 800m, 1000m, 1500m and one mile, added: “The opportunities to set PBs, to achieve qualification marks, or simply gaining quality racing experience at BMC meetings have been invaluable to generations of athletes. Indeed, the British Milers’ Club has transformed the face of middle-distance running in the UK over the past 60 years. No doubt FRANK’S legacy will live on for many more decades through the good work of the BMC.” JACK BUCKNER, chief executive of UK Athletics and 1986 European 5000m gold medallist, said: “The BMC’s impact on the development of endurance athletes over the decades cannot be over-estimated. Their races have given so many opportunities for athletes to compete against great competition exactly when they have needed it over the years. “On a personal level they played a massive part in my career as my 800m PB (1:49.8) was in a BMC race (Crystal Palace, 1981) and I regularly competed in their races from 1977-84, with my coach GEORGE GANDY also a big supporter of their events. “I’ve no doubt of its importance to endurance athletes, particularly middle-distance athletes and I am sure we will be celebrating further milestones in future decades of this fantastic format.”

As an example of the BMC’s impact, look no further than the reigning world men’s 1500m champion JAKE WIGHTMAN. “JAKE went from second place [and PB] in his debut BMC Grand Prix ‘F’ race in 2012 to first place [and PB] at the World Championships over the same distance 10 years later,” says his father and coach, GEOFF. “The BMC founder FRANK HORWILL would be proud of the widespread impact that his invention continues to have.” Aged 17, JAKE finished runner-up to WILL PAULSEN and just ahead of NEIL GOURLEY in (3:51.74) in Manchester that day before racing to global glory a decade later to beat JAKOB INGEBRIGTSEN in Eugene in (3:29.23). GEOFF WIGHTMAN adds: “The BMC is the envy of other nations around the world in the way that it conditions whole generations of athletes to the demands of fast middle and long-distance track racing. Other event disciplines in the UK have modelled themselves on the format but only longer running events can have that crucial element of pace-making.”

Spurred on by HORWILL’S battle cry and ethos, the BMC went from strength to strength through the 1960s and 1970s. To join the club, HORWILL listed 10 membership benefits, which included: “To encourage the attitude of mind that the stopwatch is the ‘enemy’ and not necessarily other Club milers.” A key moment came in June 1969 when Dutch runner MARIA GOMMERS ran (4:36.8) for the women’s mile at Saffron Lane in Leicester – the first world record at a BMC event. The following month, five men broke the four-minute barrier for the mile on the same day at BMC meetings in Motspur Park and Stretford. It was merely a taste of what was to come, as a golden era of middle-distance running saw COE, STEVE CRAM, STEVE OVETT, PETER ELLIOTT, DAVE MOORCROFT and many others making their mark.

The BMC’s growth was not entirely smooth, however. HORWILL’S creation of a BMC South Committee in the early 1980s and the critical tone of his articles in BMC News led to unrest and the resignation of chair HARRY WILSON and other committee members in 1981. TIM HUTCHINGS, one of Britain’s strongest runners during that era, recalls: “I became emergency treasurer of the BMC in the early 80s when there was an attempt to fold the club, with only my old coach FRANK banging the drum for its survival and so it could keep offering race opportunities to good athletes who wanted to make that jump upwards from club athletics.” The BMC survived, though. “I owe an immeasurable debt to the BMC,” HUTCHINGS continues, “having run in dozens of its races from the age of 15 and on through the 1970s and 1980s, run umpteen PBs, and learning how to push hard and be stretched in paced races, how to be positioned and race well, and so much more. “I ran a (3:56) mile in a low-key BMC race at Aldershot of all places, in 1982, again with great pacing. It’s very satisfying to quietly see the club go from strength to strength, helping hundreds of athletes each year and knowing you’ve played a very small part.”

The BMC got back on track in the 1990s with the creation of its nationwide grand prix series. New stars like KELLY HOLMES emerged and the BMC was involved in a memorable meeting in Oxford in 2004 where CRAIG MOTTRAM beat MO FARAH in a mile race on the 50th anniversary of ROGER BANNISTER’S famous sub-four feat. Much has changed since 1963. Led by WIGHTMAN,  KEELY HODGKINSON and LAURA MUIR, plus emerging talents like MAX BURGIN and longer distance stars like EILISH MCCOLGAN, standards have never been higher.
