UK CHAMPIONSHIPS ROUNDUP  The following article was published on the Athletics Weekly website recently, the following was a part of that article.

DAY 1 ZHARNEL HUGHES defies Mancunian monsoon on day one of the UK Champs at Sportcity

Even for a city renowned for its damp weather, the fierce downpour that hit Manchester during the men’s 100m final on the first day of the UK Championships was something to behold. As the heavens opened shortly after 7pm on Saturday (July 8), spectators and officials reached for their umbrellas or ran for cover. As the rain fell, though, ZHARNEL HUGHES reign began as British 100m champion as he sped to victory in (10.03 w0.0). The 27-year-old broke LINFORD CHRISTIE’S 30-year-old British 100m record with (9.83) in New York last month and the former record-holder was among the crowd as the Anguilla-born Brit gave further proof that he’s in the form of his life. Behind, REECE PRESCOD was satisfied to get the second automatic selection spot in the monsoon-like conditions with (10.14), while EUGENE AMO-DADZIE showed his recent (9.93) clocking wasn’t a one-off by taking bronze with (10.18). JEREMIAH AZU was fourth in (10.28) after having earlier run a Welsh record of (10.08) narrowly behind HUGHES in the semi-finals, whereas CJ UJAH, returning from an anti-doping ban, was fifth in (10.31). “It means everything to me to be British champion,” said HUGHES, stopping only briefly to talk to the media given the conditions. “I train in these conditions sometimes in Jamaica, but I am soaked here. These conditions are the worst ever. “It has been a long journey to get the title back that I last won in 2015. I thank my team, my coach and everyone who came to support me. I’ll come back for the 200m tomorrow and hope the conditions are better.”

The other women’s sprint final of the day, the 100m hurdles, was a far more straightforward affair which took place in kinder conditions. British record-holder CINDY SEMBER was a convincing winner as she clocked (12.98 w1.6) to also seal her Budapest place, the Commonwealth bronze medallist coming home ahead of PBs from ISABEL WAKEFIELD (13.05) and MARLI JESSOP (13.30).

Moments earlier JAMES WEST also showed a fine turn of speed as he out-kicked EMILE CAIRESS, TOM MORTIMER and CHARLES HICKS to win the men’s 5000m in (13:42.03). The rain was not as heavy as the runners covered their 12.5 laps of the Sportcity track, but West’s post-race chat with AW was almost aborted as the rain and wind nearly blew caused the media tent to collapse.

After years of combining part-time building work with athletics, SCOTT LINCOLN became a full-time athlete for the first time last winter and it’s paying off as he finds himself in the form of his life. At times he admits he is twiddling his thumbs from time to time. “I’ve watched everything on YouTube and am on to Netflix now,” he jokes. But generally it gives him an invaluable opportunity to fully rest between training sessions and ahead of competitions. He threw (21.10m) at the European Team Championships a fortnight ago in Poland but was disappointed as he felt he was capable of more. In Manchester on Saturday he took his 16th British title – indoors or out – with (20.46m) in wet conditions early on Saturday afternoon ahead of YOUCEF ZATAT’S (18.78m) and PATRICK SWAN’S (17.59m). LINCOLN had mixed feelings about the rain. “I wasn’t exactly doing a rain dance to get it to shower,” he said, but added that the circle at Sportcity is usually better for shot putters when it’s a little wet.

NICK PERCY led the discus with (61.26m) in the second round but LAWRENCE OKOYE bounced back in the third to take the lead with (61.68m). “It wasn’t a great performance but it was a good result,” said OKOYE, who is now based in Loughborough and enjoying a busy summer of competitions ahead of the World Champs in Budapest as he tries to build on the brilliant form he showed in 2022 to win bronze at the European Championships.

DAY 2 In the quest to challenge for medals at the World Championships this summer, ZHARNEL HUGHES s was briefly hospitalised earlier this year after a particularly gruelling workout. HUGHES was training in Jamaica under GLEN MILLS – the man who guided USAIN BOLT – and had to be given medical help after a tough session of 300m reps. Such hard work has led to him being in the form of his life and on Sunday (July 9) in Manchester he became the first man to seal a 100m and 200m double at the UK Championships since MARLON DEVONISH in 2007. After winning the 100m on Saturday during a freak storm in (10.03), he cruised to victory in the 200m in (19.77) a time that would have broken JOHN REGIS’S British record if it hadn’t been for a 2.3m/sec tailwind. JOE FERGUSON was runner-up with (20.43) with JONA EFOLOKO third in (20.45) and ADAM GEMILI fourth in (20.53). “I am the fastest man in the world and it didn’t happen overnight,” said HUGHES. “It took a lot of hard work. If you were to see some of the clips of me training you will see why I’m so happy with the results. “I push myself tirelessly. I ended up in hospital (earlier this year after training) because I couldn’t breathe and my sugar dropped a little bit. I was forcing myself to hit the times and the recovery times. “That day was a difficult day for training. I over-exerted myself. I didn’t pass out but I couldn’t recover properly and every time I tried to get up I couldn’t stand up for long.

“I’m grateful to see the rewards happening for the hard work. We still have time to go and I can get a lot faster. I know I’m in the shape to run 19 seconds, that’s what is exciting. It can come again.”

LINFORD CHRISTIE, the former UK 100m record-holder, was among the spectators in Manchester and he had some congratulatory words for HUGHES. Coming up in a fortnight, the 27-year-old sprinter will take on FRED KERLEY, NOAH LYLES, ERRIYON KNIGHTON and others at the Diamond League in London before topping up his fitness ahead of Budapest with more hard training sessions.

BUDAPEST ON COURSE FOR UNFORGETTABLE WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS  The following article was published on the Athletics Weekly website recently.

Hungarian hosts are confident of putting on a brilliant global event and we also take a look at World Athletics’ historical museum in Budapest. With less than 50 days to go before Central Europe’s first World Athletics Championships in Hungary’s capital Budapest, British fans are on course to provide the most overseas spectators at the event next month. Hungarians will of course provide the most with around 90,000 having bought tickets at the beginning of July but Britain (17,494), Germany (14,088), USA (9,794), France (6,673), Spain (6,540), Ireland (5,572), Netherlands (5193), Czech Republic (4584), Italy (4,265) and Poland (4,211) complete the top 10. Hungary does not have a huge athletics fan base and while their athletes are on an upward curve (gaining promotion at last month’s European Team Championships), they have relatively few medal chances, The hammer provides their best hope with Bence Halász, a world and European medalist in recent years.

While the organisers are confident of eventually selling out, there are still tickets remaining with some great deals and it is possible to get a ‘Superheroes’ package for all nine days at the championships for $174 which is significantly less than a good single ticket will cost for the following year’s Olympics athletics programme. While the previous Europeans took place in a big stadium – the Nepstadium – that has now been replaced by a football stadium – the Puskas Arena. The venue for this August is therefore a brand new stadium beside the Danube in a previous wasteland area. It looks a tremendous stadium of a perfect size and not too far out of the city with most arriving by tram though the VIPs will be arriving by boat along the river. It will certainly be a better atmosphere and numbers than at the 2022 World Championships in Eugene.

The CEO of the organisers, Budapest 2023 Zrt, NEMETH BALAZS, is a former well-known television presenter but also a (1:54) 800m runner who has also run marathons. He is not only keen for it to be better than recent events, but also the best World Championships in history. He hopes this will be created by a fast Mondo track (the same as used in Tokyo 2021) together with enthusiastic capacity crowds and the post championships legacy.

The Hungarian event will be the first World Athletics Championship to embrace the World Athletics Sustainability Strategy and its LOC are driven by two main legacy goals: To create a health and well-being legacy by motivating Hungarians to be more active through the incentive programmes and to create a tangible urban regeneration legacy with the development of the new National Athletics Centre which will serve as a competition and training facility in the future as well as a new green park and recreational area for the local community to enjoy. The stadium has geothermal heating and cooling system and energy efficient lighting. While the stadium will hold 30,000 for the championships, post-games the top tier of seating will be removed and converted to a 15,000 capacity stadium with a running track for the general public and trees replacing where the top level of seating is.

As throws are particularly important to Hungarian athletes there are six different hammer and discus circles on the warm-up track, at various angles so they can always have a favourable wind whatever the direction. The organisers environmentally friendly attitude is illustrated by the constructors having an environmental officer to ensure that the local habitat such as owls, swans and beavers were not impacted too much by the building. Heroes Square where the marathon starts and finishes, the marathon course is fundamentally four laps of 10km starting and finishing in the magnificent Heroes Square with a mostly very wide and straight avenue down to the Danube, across the famous Swing Bridge and through a tunnel then a small loop of Buda beside the castle. It is a reasonably flat route – avoiding Buda’s very tough inclines with inclines (such as across the bridge or in the tunnel under the castle) rather than any hills.

I have been fortunate enough to previously attend in Budapest a World Cross-Country Championships in 1994, a European Championships in 1998 (where GB topped the medal table) and a World Masters Championships in 2014 and it’s definitely a fantastic city to visit at any time but a global championships will be particularly special magnified with a strong British team and a huge number of UK supporters.

CASTER SEMENYA WINS APPEAL AT EUROPEAN COURT OF HUMAN RIGHTS  The following article was published on the Athletics Weekly website recently. Photograph taken by MARK SHEARMAN.

South African athlete was discriminated against by rules that forced her to lower her testosterone levels, according to a judgement from the ECHR. The European Court of Human Rights has ruled in favour of CASTER SEMENYA in her appeal against World Athletics’ rules relating to testosterone levels.

SEMENYA has been unable to compete at her best distance of 800m since the introduction of limits by the global governing body on testosterone levels which would have forced her to use medication. Legal challenges in the past to the Court of Arbitration for Sport and the Swiss Federal Supreme Court were rejected, but the ECHR says her human rights have been violated. In a judgement published on Tuesday (July 11), the ECHR found the Swiss government did not protect the athlete from being discriminated against when its Supreme Court refused to overturn a decision by the Court of Arbitration for Sport which upheld World Athletics’ rules governing the participation of athletes with DSD. The statement read: “The Court found in particular that the applicant had not been afforded sufficient institutional and procedural safeguards in Switzerland to allow her to have her complaints examined effectively, especially since her complaints concerned substantiated and credible claims of discrimination as a result of her increased testosterone level caused by differences of sex development.”

SEMENYA, who was born with differences of sexual development, argued that taking medication could put her health in danger and that the ruling, which prevented her defending her Olympic 800m title in 2021, denied athletes with DSD the right to rely on their natural abilities. In a statement, the global governing body said: “World Athletics notes the judgement of the deeply divided Chamber of the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR). We remain of the view that the DSD regulations are a necessary, reasonable and proportionate means of protecting fair competition in the female category as the Court of Arbitration for Sport and Swiss Federal Tribunal both found, after a detailed and expert assessment of the evidence. “The case was filed against the state of Switzerland, rather than World Athletics. We will liaise with the Swiss Government on the next steps and, given the strong dissenting views in the decision, we will be encouraging them to seek referral of the case to the ECHR Grand Chamber for a final and definitive decision. In the meantime, the current DSD regulations, approved by the World Athletics Council in March 2023, will remain in place.”
