UK ATHLETICS WELCOME INPUT FROM CLUB ATHLETES ON THE SPORT’S RULES – The following article was published on the Athletic Weekly website recently.

Did you know that a track and field meeting cannot last longer than eight hours? Or that you’re allowed to wear a T-shirt in competition but only if it matches your club colours? Or that headphones are banned in races unless they conduct sound through bones and do not sit in the ears?
These are some of the many weird and wonderful regulations in the current UKA Rule Book and the national governing body is now encouraging ideas and submissions ahead of the 2018 edition being published in February next year.
The athletics fraternity has until July 31 to submit possible changes to the rules and the main requirement is that you need the support of your club before emailing your suggestion to rules@uka.org.uk
“We’d really encourage people to contribute and discuss it with their clubmates,” says Nigel Holl, UKA’s director of strategy and partnerships.
The governing body received around 60 submissions prior to the publication of the current UKA 2016 Rule Book but it involved UKA’s competition rules merging with the IAAF’s rules and saw debate surrounding age group divisions.
“We have home countries, for example, which gives us extra eligibility issues,” says Holl, explaining why the UK needs some rules of its own in addition to the IAAF’s rules.
When asked what likely ‘hot potatoes’ there might be this time, Holl said: “There are no flashing lights to be honest, probably because the process was so effective in 2016.”
But he adds that the issues of composite clubs and the size of logos on athletes’ kit are more of an issue now than in the past.
“There is also nothing stopping people from bringing up the age groups issue again,” he says.
To find out more about the rules revisions process also PDFs of current rules, see britishathletics.org.uk/competitions/rules

SEB COE TO BECOME THE NEW LOUGHBOROUGH CHANCELLOR – The IAAF president graduated from Loughborough in 1979 before going on to achieve his Olympic success

Lord Sebastian Coe has been announced as Loughborough University’s new Chancellor.
The two-time Olympic gold medallist and IAAF president graduated from Loughborough in 1979 before going on to achieve his Olympic success in 1980 and 1984.
Coe, who graduated with a BSc in Economics and Social History, was made an Honorary Doctor of Technology (Hon DTech) by the university in 1985 and was appointed as a Pro Chancellor in 2012.
He will now become Loughborough’s sixth Chancellor, replacing Sir Nigel Rudd, and be officially installed at the university’s summer graduation ceremonies in July.

SCHEDULE ANNOUNCED FOR GOLD COAST 2018 COMMONWEALTH GAMES – Was published on the Athletics Weekly website on 4 April

Organisers mark one year to go until the Gold Coast Games by releasing the programme for the event in Australia. The schedule for the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games has been announced, marking the one year to go milestone ahead of the event in Australia.
The Games, taking place in the Australian coastal city in Queensland from April 4-15, will see athletics action get underway on April 8.
The first athletics event of the Games will be the men’s and women’s 20km race walk events on Currumbin Beachfront before the first session of stadium action that afternoon in Carrara Stadium.
Both the men’s and women’s 100m finals will be the following day, on Monday April 9.
The marathon events at Southport Broadwater Parklands will bring athletics action to a close on April 15.
The competition events schedule unveiled by organisers on Tuesday is the largest in Commonwealth Games history.
An official Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games ticketing guide, available online at www.gc2018.com/tickets, has also been released to help fans begin planning ahead of ticket requests opening on April 24.
“As we celebrate our one year to go milestone, it is exciting to announce the largest competition events schedule in Commonwealth Games history,” said GOLDOC chairman, Peter Beattie AC.
“GC2018 will mark the first time para triathlon has featured on the programme and para sport athletes will be able to compete in the marathon for the first time also.”
GOLDOC CEO Mark Peters added: “With 18 sports and a record seven para-sports, GC2018 comprises the largest competition event schedule in Commonwealth Games history which will be broadcast to a cumulative global audience of 1.5 billion.
“Athletics will be the largest sport at GC2018 with a total of 58 medal events and estimated participation of around 1000 athletes from over 60 nations and territories.”
The full schedule can be found here.
