UK ATHLETICS SENIOR INDOOR CHAMPIONSHIPS – Took place at Birmingham on 18-19 February, the following article on ELLIE BAKER was taken from the Athletics Weekly website, and the photograph taken by MARK SHEARMAN.

ELLIE BAKER usually has more of a focus on the 800m, but last year’s European 1500m finalist is looking to learn more about the longer distance. She knew from training that progress was being made but winning the British Indoor title and breaking a championships record which had stood since 1986 in the process was beyond her expectations. The 24-year-old narrowly won a thrilling duel with KATIE SNOWDEN by clocking (4:06.73), a time which eclipsed the (4:06.87) run by ZOLA BUDD back when these championships were staged at RAF Cosford. Snowden was fractionally behind in (4:06.98), while ERIN WALLACE – who had led for much of the race – was outside the European Indoor standard with a season’s best (4:09.22). “I honestly cannot believe it,” said BAKER.  “I knew I was in great shape coming into the indoor season, but it hasn’t been showing in my races which for me has been super frustrating. But to come away with the championship record and my first British Championships gold, in my very first British Championships competing in the 1500m… it’s all a lot of firsts and I’m delighted with everything. “Going into this race, I didn’t have the qualification time, so I was unsure if I would be going, so I’m ecstatic to be on the plane. I haven’t done many 1500m races and my coach wanted me to use this as a learning experience to help with my 800m performances. I think, after today, my coach will want me in the 1500m field more frequently.

There were 2 other championship winners, firstly JADE IVE won the Pole Vault title with a seasons best of (4.35m) following on from her 2nd place in the 2022 championships. Finally SCOTT LINCOLN won the Shot Put title with a seasons best of (20.36m) which is his 5th UK indoor title.

RYAN CROUSER BREAKS WORLD SHOT PUT RECORD  The following article was published on the Athletics Weekly website recently.

American thrower sets outright world record at the Simplot Games in Idaho on Saturday. RYAN CROUSER says he has been tweaking his technique this winter in the never-ending quest for improvement. The shot put legend simply used his tried-and-trusted method, though, as he beat his indoor world record of (22.82m) and outdoor world record of (23.37m) with a mighty (23.38m) in Idaho on Saturday (Feb 18). Competing indoors at the Simplot Games in Pocatello, the 30-year-old improved his outright world record – which was set in Eugene in June last year – by one centimetre. He has a good history at the Simplot Games, too, as he set a US indoor high school record there back in 2011. The two-time Olympic and reigning world champion has now surpassed the 23-metre barrier in seven competitions during his career so far.

CURRENT DISTRIBUTION OF SHAFTESBURY INFORMATION Currently I notify members (by email) using “MailChimp”. The reason I changed, was in November 2017 “Gmail” put a limit of 100 addresses that users could send to in a 24-hour period, and currently I send to approximately 850 members each issue.

On seeking technical advice “MailChimp” was recommended as the best way for SBH to go forward. There is one thing you should be aware off is that when you receive an email from me, the footer at the bottom has 4 options, of which one is “Unsubscribe Me From List”. Could I ask you not to select this as if you do you will be automatically removed from my distribution list.

PARKRUN 150 CLUB – Congratulations to JOHN DRYDEN who competed his 150th race at Guildford last Saturday.

RESULTS – APOLOGIES BUT OVER THE LAST FEW MONTHS, RESULTS HAVE TAKEN SOMETIMES 2 WEEKS TO SHOW ON THE POWER OF 10. IT HAS BECOME A NIGHTMARE TO TRACK MISSING RESULTS. IF THESE GET MISSED ON THE NEWSLETTER, PLEASE LET ME KNOW.

START FITNESS METROPOLITAN LEAGUE – The fifth fixture of five took place last Saturday at Trent Park. The weather was overcast and mild and running conditions near perfect.

It has been another outstanding season for Shaftesbury, with the young athletes in dominating form, and our senior men after some early season hiccups, ended up in 2nd place overall. Hopefully, with the amount of talented senior women we have, we can make an improved showing next season.

Thank you to all our athletes who turned out in all weather condition, and the many recent new members who have made their presence felt. Also a thank you to the many parents, supporters and team managers. Before the results, instead of naming our team, I will give an assessment of how team went for each age-group.

Under 11 Boys – Has been an outstanding season for the team, winning all 5 fixtures, and became league champions by some 134 points (last season they finished 3rd). Individually JOSIAH ALDHAM and PRINCE-MOSES JOHN competed in all 5 fixtures, with TAHA COCKERELL, BEN KASPAR, JAMES MOUDART and DENNYS PASCAL competed in 4.

Under 11 Girls – This season has been a vast improvement (last season they finished 7th). In the 5 fixtures have been close with Woodford Green & Essex Ladies, and they won the 2nd fixture at Welwyn. The team ended up the season in 2nd place behind WG&EL, by only 29 points. Individually SIENNA DARCY and ELFIE SHAW competed in all 5 fixtures, with GRACE ROONEY competed in 4.

Under 13 Boys – Has been an outstanding season for the team, after finishing joint 1st with WG&EL at Claybury, they went on to win 3 of the 4 remaining fixtures. And became league champions by 14 points over WG&EL (last season they became champions by 13 points over WG&EL). Individually SAM DARCY and LADDIE SHAW competed in all 5 fixtures, with JESSIE ABRAHAMS, CALEB HILTON, EDDIE PASCAL and AARON YACOBI competed in 4.

Under 13 Girls – The team has had a good season, but with a couple of indifferent results, they eventually finished in 6th place (last season they finished 4th). Individually MEI HAYAKAWA and AMDER JACKSON competed in 4 fixtures, with VERA DOUDKO and JAI HAYAKAWA competed in 3 and 2 respectively.

Under 15 Boys/Under 17 Men – Has been an outstanding season for the team, defending the title they won last season, winning 3 of the 5 fixtures, winning by 24 points over WG&EL. Individually ARTHUR PHILLIPS competed in all 5 fixtures, with DANIEL BANYARD, JAI DARYANANI, JARED MORRIS and EUAN PHILLIPS competed in 4.

Under 15 Girls/Under 17 Women – Unfortunately this is the 2nd season we have struggled with numbers on the line, which meant we finished this season in 8th place (last season we finished 11th). Individually ELIZABETH DA TERESA competed in all 5 fixtures, with ERIN GIBLIN and POSIE SHAW competed in 4.

Senior Men – After what you call a dodgy start at Claybury, the team then responded by winning 2 of the next 4 fixtures, which meant we finished in a comfortable 2nd place, and promotion to Division 1. The Veteran Men were very outstanding, and finished the season in 5th place, we have the potential to push for promotion next season (last season they finished 5th). Individually ARTHUR PHILLIPS competed in all 5 fixtures, with THOMAS BUTLER, MARK COTTLE, PHILIP CUNNINGHAM, PAUL MACCARTHY and TIM UNDERHILL competed in 4.

Senior Women – We are capable of doing much better, and finished the season in 10th place, just avoiding relegation (last season they finished 6th). Individually JO KENT competed in all 5 fixtures, with ABI GREEN and NICOLA PAYNE competed in 3 and 2 respectively..

SPRINTS COACH RON RODDAN DIES  The following article was published on the Athletics Weekly website recently. Photograph of RON and LINFORD in Sheffield in 1992 taken by MARK SHEARMAN.

Tributes pour in for coaching legend who was best known for guiding LINFORD CHRISTIE to Olympic gold. It is hard to think of an athletics coach more committed to the cause of helping athletes reach their potential than RON RODDAN. The 91-year-old, who died in the early hours of Friday (Feb 10), dedicated himself to the sport for several decades guiding, most notably, LINFORD CHRISTIE to world and Olympic 100m titles. RODDAN was born in Crewe but moved to London with his family as a child and joined Thames Valley Harriers shortly after World War II in 1947. He was a good club-level sprinter, winning medals at the Middlesex Championships and running the quarter-mile in (50.2), but later found his true calling as a sprints coach and from 1964 onwards guided several dozen athletes to international level. Like many coaches, he fell into the role by accident too. When his own coach retired, RODDAN was encouraged by his clubmates to take over. “Initially, I carried on with what my coach had taught us, but then I went on courses, met other coaches and began to put my own ideas to work,” he later recalled. RODDAN also combined coaching with a job as an engineer. He had a spell in of national service in the Army, too, before becoming a Geological Society laboratory technician until he was made redundant in 1990. His coaching initially took place in Alperton and then at West London Stadium – an arena that would later be named after CHRISTIE – and he coached athletes of all standards. “My athletes getting PBs or just running better than they thought they were capable of… those moments make me feel that it is all worthwhile,” he said.

RODDAN’S first major successes were MICK HAUCK, who developed into a (46.75) 400m runner, plus DICK STEANE, who set a British 200m record of (20.66) at the Mexico City Olympics. Many more followed before that day in 1979 when the 19-year-old CHRISTIE approached RODDAN. He had placed second in the English Schools 200m and his best times were just (10.7) and (21.8). CHRISTIE clearly had talent but in those early days lacked self-discipline. “He just wouldn’t come training and only did when he felt like it,” RODDAN recalled. Following the 1984 season, by which time CHRISTIE’S PBs were down to (10.44) and (21.38), RODDAN gave him an ultimatum on the lines of “either work seriously or don’t waste my time.” It worked and in 1985 he clocked a wind-assisted (10.20) and early in 1986 he won his first international title, the European indoor 200m gold. Later that year he succeeded ALLAN WELLS as UK record-holder for 100m before going on to win Olympic 100m gold in Barcelona in 1992 and the world title in Stuttgart in 1993. Inspired by his mentor, CHRISTIE later went into coaching himself.

The Independent once wrote of RODDAN: “He is always there (for CHRISTIE). He has been since a teenage CHRISTIE first ambled into the Thames Valley Harriers club and took a half-hearted interest in being a sprinter. “RODDAN diverted him from a life of freewheeling to one of extraordinary dedication that turned him into a millionaire Olympic champion and his coach into . . . well in to being slightly better known, perhaps a bit better off, a lot better travelled, but at the end of the day still the guy who turns up in the middle of December at the grandly named, badly under-funded Linford Christie stadium. There he gives as much attention to kids with not a hope in the world of emulating CHRISTIE as he does to Olympians.” In addition to guiding CHRISTIE to his major triumphs, RODDAN also coached 2000 Olympic medallists DARREN CAMPBELL and KATHARINE MERRY. He has also had input with athletes such as FRANKIE FREDERICKS, BRUNY SURIN, JOICE MADUAKA and JAMIE BAULCH, plus many more.  RODDAN had a quiet, modest personality but was forthright with his views. He was a regular letter writer to AW and would often call the magazine to voice his concerns over the sport. “I’m not pushy,” he once said. “I’m the opposite to what most sprinters are. They’re brash, loud and extroverted. I don’t know what it is but I just seem to be approachable.”

As recently as 2017, for example, he wrote to the magazine to argue that the medal tally by British athletes at the World Championships in London that year was poor given the amount of funding. “Over the last decade,” he said, “coaching has gone downhill. Go back to the system of the 1980s and ’90s where 6-8 national coaches work with club coaches and their athletes. This way everyone helps each other to improve.” In his later years, not surprisingly, he earned a number of accolades such as the RON PICKERING Memorial Award for Services to Athletics and in 2016 he was inducted into the England Athletics hall of fame. Announcing his death, CHRISTIE’S management agency Nuff Respect said: “It is with deep sadness that we heard the news that the amazing and irreplaceable RON RODDAN passed away. RON was a valued coach at Thames Valley Harriers which came to be his second home, but his relationships reached far beyond West London. “His coaching achievements are too many to mention but the most obvious is the Olympic, world, Commonwealth and European medals that LINFORD won with RON by his side and the Olympic medals won by KATHARINE MERRY and DARREN CAMPBELL at the Sydney Olympics. “RON was devoted to his athletes, brutally honest, pushing them to their absolute best. This most modest of men was at his happiest with a stopwatch in his hand, standing trackside.” CHRISTIE himself once said that money and medals aside, the thing he prized most at the end of a race was “seeing a smile on RON’S face”.

UPCOMING CROSS COUNTRY AND ROAD RELAY FIXTURES FOR THE NEXT 4 WEEKS, WHICH COVERS THE PERIOD THURSDAY 9 FEBRUARY UNTIL WEDNESDAY 8 MARCH – The updated 2022-2023 Winter Fixture Card and Information Sheet, are available further down the Newsletter.

START FITNESS METROPOLITAN LEAGUE – The fifth fixture of five takes place on Saturday 11 February at Trent Park, Cockfosters Road, Middlesex (SatNav EN4 0JZ). Please note; because of its size, Trent Park has several different post codes. The one given is the most appropriate and closest to the Cockfosters Road entrance to the Park.
Race Headquarters – Located just beyond “Go Ape”, on the left hand side (south) of Lime Avenue.
Refreshments – Are available for purchase in the Trent Park café which is near to the Start/Finish area. In addition, the Wildlife Rescue & Ambulance Service (Enfield), located at the eastern end of the access road known as Lime Avenue (approx. 600 metres from the Start/Finish area), has a tea shop which is open until 4 pm.
Course Location – The main start / finish area is adjacent to the race HQ. HQ to course walk time, less than a minute.
Course Description – Very undulating course on open, rough, lumpy park land. Liable to be soft underfoot throughout. Some exposed tree roots in places, and two small wooden bridges that could be slippery. The course is likely to be very muddy and slippery in places so is not suitable for ordinary trainers. Spikes are strongly recommended for this event
Public Transport – London Underground – Cockfosters station is the northern end of the Piccadilly Line. The station is 300 metres to the south of the Cockfosters Road entrance to Trent Park (approximately 5 minute walk). Turn right out of the station, walk north along Cockfosters Road, past the BP Garage (with M&S). Use of public transport is strongly recommended due to the proximity of the underground station and limited car parking at Trent Park.
Directions From Major Roads – Cockfosters Road (A111) entrance; approximately two miles to the south of Junction 24 of the M25, on the left hand side, or just over half a mile to the north of the junction of the A111 and A110 (Bramley Road), on the right hand side (SatNav EN4 0JZ).
Parking – Parking is available within Trent Park but is likely to be very limited. Given the proximity of Trent Park to Cockfosters underground station, use of public transport is therefore strongly recommended. If you intend to drive, please car-share as much as possible.
The main car parking facility is at the Cockfosters Road entrance to Trent Park. PLEASE NOTE: The private car park close to the Southgate Hockey Centre at the top of Snakes Lane is NOT available. Please do not attempt to park there – you WILL be turned back. Cars must not be parked on any of the roads within Trent Park.
Trent Park closes at sunset, which will be at approximately 17:00. The gate at the Cockfosters Road entrance is usually closed at this time, but drivers must take care to check the closing time which will be shown on the sign inside the main entrance.
Start Times – 12.00pm U11 (Over 9) Boys & Girls (up to 1800m), 12.15pm U13 Boys (3000m), 12.30pm U13 Girls (3000m), 12.45pm U17 Men and U15 Boys (4000m), 1.00pm U17 Women and U15 Girls (4000m), 1.15pm U20, Senior and Veteran Women (7800m), 2.15pm U20, Senior and Veteran Men (7800m).

UK ATHLETICS SEEKING LAW CHANGE TO ALLOW FOR CREATION OF OPEN CATEGORY  The following article was published on the Athletics Weekly website recently.

Government called on to amend legislation regarding the transgender inclusion, but governing body is told their legal view is “inaccurate”. UK Athletics has called for the Government to make a change in legislation that would allow for the creation of an open category in which trans athletes could compete and reserving the women’s category only for athletes who were female at birth. Following the recent release of World Athletics’ “preferred option” when it comes to rules on the inclusion of trans athletes and athletes with differences of sex development (DSD), the delicate and controversial issue has come to the fore once more. The global governing body has outlined proposals which would permit those athletes to compete in the women’s category, but only following the increased suppression of testosterone levels.

Those plans have been met with outcry by a number of athletes and, in response to that consultation, UKA published their own preferred position on Friday (Feb 3) which is very much at odds with World Athletics. Following guidance from the UK Sports Council Equality Group (SCEG) and recommendations from their own Transgender Project Group, UKA insisted testosterone suppression was neither an effective nor a safe way forward and advocated instead for an open category. “In recognition of the available scientific evidence, UKA believes that efforts should be made to fairly and safely include transgender women in an ‘open’ category’, which would replace the current male category and be open to athletes of all sexes; and reserve the women’s category for competitors who were female at birth, so that they can continue to compete fairly,” read a UKA statement. Legal advice has suggested, however, that such an approach could not currently be lawfully implemented due to terms in the Gender Recognition Act of 2004 and Equality Act of 2010. UKA are therefore asking for the terms of a “sporting exemption” to be altered which would allow them, and other sporting bodies, to pursue their preferred course of action. “The Gender Recognition Act 2004 states that people with gender recognition certificates have to be treated as female for all purposes and there’s not an exemption for that for sporting purposes,” said UKA chair Ian Beattie.

However, the Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC) said it was “disappointed” UKA chose to publicise “inaccurate advice” and questioned its interpretation of the law. The UK government also disagrees with the UKA stance that the law does not allow it to ban transgender women from female events on fairness grounds. “I think it’s fair to say that if we didn’t get a legal change, it would be very difficult for us to go ahead with this policy because I think the risks to the organisation we would see as too high. Like any organisation, we’ve got an obligation to comply with legislation like anybody else. “We said before, we don’t make these rules. We can try to influence so I think, at that point, we’d have to reassess what we did.” UKA’s ultimate wish is for the World Athletics stance to change. The latter’s preferred option is at a consultancy stage but the global governing body insists no decisions have been made and current proposals may not be what is presented for a vote at the next Congress meeting in March. “World Athletics will make rules for World Athletics level competition,” said Beattie. “We all have to abide by them. Whatever that rule comes out as. At the moment, we’re at the point we’ve been asked to input and we’re inputting and hopefully influencing in that respect.”

UKA’s position on the inclusion for transgender women in athletics
“UKA does not agree with the use of testosterone suppression for transgender women:
Scientific evidence, as detailed in the SCEG Guidance is that transgender women retain a testosterone/puberty advantage over biological females regardless of the reduction of post puberty testosterone levels.
There is currently no scientifically robust, independent research showing that all male performance advantage is eliminated following testosterone suppression.

UKA has seen no evidence that it is safe for transgender women to reduce their hormonal levels by testosterone Further, there is insufficient research to understand the effects on transgender women if such testosterone suppression is carried out suddenly. The category of “women’s athletics” arose as a way of enabling the inclusion of women in athletics. Women who wished to compete in athletics could not do so fairly with men, because of the physical advantages men enjoy due to their (male) biological sex. Therefore, the decision was made to create a separate, sex-based category in which people of the female sex could fairly compete against one another. The category of women’s sport arose not as a response to women’s social role or personal gender identity, but to ensure fair competition amongst female athletes by eliminating the advantages enjoyed by male athletes on account of their sex. In recognition of the available scientific evidence, UKA believes that efforts should be made to fairly and safely include transgender women in an “open” category, which would replace the current male category and be open to athletes of all sexes; and reserve the women’s category for competitors who were female at birth, so that they can continue to compete fairly.

ATHLETES PAY TRIBUTE TO COACH GEORGE HARRISON  The following article was published on the Athletics Weekly website recently. Photographs by MARK SHEARMAN.

LIZZIE BIRD, ELLIE BAKER, KYLE LANGFORD and MARILYN OKORO among those who came under the wing of inspirational Shaftesbury Barnet man who has died aged 90.

GEORGE HARRISON MBE, coach to scores of world-class athletes, including British 3000m steeplechase record holder LIZZIE BIRD, Commonwealth silver medallist KYLE LANGFORD and Olympic bronze medallist MARILYN OKORO, died in his sleep at home on Sunday January 22, aged 90, writes ROB DRAPERTributes have poured in from around the world for the former marathon runner and leading light in the British Milers’ Club, who ran for Highgate Harriers and coached at Shaftesbury Barnet Harriers, where he was club president from 2011-2014, from the thousands of runners he has coached over the years, many of whom credit him with turning their lives around.

Commonwealth silver medallist BIRD, speaking from the USA where she is training, said: “I was coached by him by two years as a sixth former but it felt like much longer because of the impact he had on my life. I called him right after I won Commonwealth silver medal last summer and he was so excited. You could tell his voice was jumping up and down and he was so proud of me. He was saying: ‘Could you imagine when we met at 16 that you would go and do this?’ And I was telling him it was him who had helped me get there.” BIRD was coached by HARRISON at St Alban’s School, where countess students benefited from his advice. “He installed that work ethic into me,” said BIRD. “That you show up and you get the work done.”

Not all his runners ended up in athletics. Actor and footballer VINNIE JONES came under his tutelage in his school days, HARRISON recalling he was a tough, talented cross-country runner. At the height of JONES’ Hollywood fame, HARRISON bumped into him in Kings Langley, the Watford suburb where they both lived. “You don’t remember me, do you VINNIE?” HARRISON said. “Yes I do,” replied JONES. “Coach GEORGE!”

ELLIE BAKER, semi-finalist at last year’s world championships over 800m, was also guided by HARRISON through her teenage years. “I was going through difficult time because I had plateaued a bit. I moved to training with GEORGE at Watford having had three years not progressing and in my first year I won the English Schools and the next year I came second in European Under-20s. He turned my career around. “He just had unwavering faith in you and because he has been doing it so many years, you just believed what he said. If he believed you could do it, you had to believe it. When you think of the lives he has touched over the years, there’s a whole community pf people has brought together which is an incredible legacy to leave.”

His Saturday morning sessions at Watford Town Cricket Club were the stuff of legends, generations of runners having assembled there early morning, including former UK 800m champion PAUL HERBERT, a (1:45.64) runner and PAT CHESTER, a (3:59.60) miler. “You never knew who would turn up,” said BIRD. “It might be someone who he had coached in the 1980s who had shown up knowing GEORGE would be there and would join in. I spoke to him in December and he said he wasn’t missing the cold Tuesday nights at the Woodside track but he did miss the Saturday morning sessions.” BIRD and BAKER both recalled his practice of sending Christmas cards with predicted PBs for the coming summer, invariably a seemingly outlandish target the athlete felt they had no chance of achieving. Come the summer, almost all would have bettered his predicted mark, HARRISON having installed in their imagination the first possibility of the talent they didn’t realise they possessed. “It was pressure that turned into confidence because you felt that if GEORGE believes in me, of course I can do it,” said BIRD. “And he was just as pleased with athletes who had made county teams or schools teams as internationals. He cared about them all.” Photograph of GEORGE with KYLE LANGFORD.

His legacy in his athletes’ lives went well beyond the sport, many testifying that his influence helped them get their life on track as teenagers. Renowned sports’ scientist, former England international runner and sub-four-minute miler JOE DUNBAR remembers his first training session at the Woodside track. The brutal reps session had DUNBAR, 16 years old and regular smoker at school, spluttering and vomiting. He never smoked again. “I figured that if he was committing the time to me and believed in me, then it had to come from both ends. It sounds dramatic but it was a moment that changed my life.

GRASSROOTS OPPOSITION TO WORLD ATHLETICS TRANSGENDER PROPOSALS  The following article was published on the Athletics Weekly website recently.

Maths and data experts from Mornington Chasers Running Club find 87% of club representatives in Britain do not want transgender athletes in women’s events.

A statistical survey carried out by maths and data experts from Mornington Chasers Running Club has shown that an overwhelming majority of grassroots athletics and running clubs in the UK are opposed to male athletes who identify as transgender competing in women’s athletics. The survey was carried out following the news that World Athletics had circulated a consultation document that included the option of allowing transgender athletes to compete in elite female track and field events if they recorded a low testosterone level.

ALICE SULLIVAN of University College London and JOHN ARMSTRONG of King’s College London contacted more than 400 athletics and running clubs to ask them about the global governing body’s proposal to allow some males, including males who identify as transgender, to compete in women’s athletics on condition that they reduce their testosterone levels below 2.5nmol/L for two years. They found that 87% of those who replied were opposed to the proposal.

The survey only received 65 replies from 416 emails and acknowledge any data-collection exercise has some limitations, but they add: “The sample size of the survey was not a limitation… We do not think conducting a larger survey would make any material difference to the key finding that the volunteers do not support World Athletics’ policy.”

SULLIVAN is chair of Mornington Chasers Running Club and Professor of Sociology at UCL with a special interest in data analysis and collection, whereas Armstrong is a coach at the club and Reader in Financial Mathematics at King’s. They describe themselves as “part of a group of runners who believe it is important for UK Athletics and World Athletics to be informed of the views of the UK athletics community on this issue”. “It is vital that grassroots athletics has a voice,” says SULLIVAN. “We conducted this survey because no-one had asked the ordinary volunteers who keep community athletics going what we think.” Their survey results in more detail can be found here.

However, those who oppose the idea of transgender athletes competing in women’s athletics will have been pleased to see a report in The Times on Thursday which suggests World Athletics’ long-term strategy is likely to stop trans and intersex athletes competing in female categories — and instead lead to them taking on elite men in a new “open” classification. The article, which was written by long-time athletics journalists MATT LAWSON and RICK BROADBENT, reported: “Insiders anticipate the end result of the consultation will be the creation of a new, fully-inclusive open category in which both trans and DSD (differences in sexual development) athletes will compete against elite men.”
