UK ATHLETICS SENIOR INDOOR CHAMPIONSHIPS – Took place at Birmingham on 18-19 February, the following article on ELLIE BAKER was taken from the Athletics Weekly website, and the photograph taken by MARK SHEARMAN.

ELLIE BAKER usually has more of a focus on the 800m, but last year’s European 1500m finalist is looking to learn more about the longer distance. She knew from training that progress was being made but winning the British Indoor title and breaking a championships record which had stood since 1986 in the process was beyond her expectations. The 24-year-old narrowly won a thrilling duel with KATIE SNOWDEN by clocking (4:06.73), a time which eclipsed the (4:06.87) run by ZOLA BUDD back when these championships were staged at RAF Cosford. Snowden was fractionally behind in (4:06.98), while ERIN WALLACE – who had led for much of the race – was outside the European Indoor standard with a season’s best (4:09.22). “I honestly cannot believe it,” said BAKER.  “I knew I was in great shape coming into the indoor season, but it hasn’t been showing in my races which for me has been super frustrating. But to come away with the championship record and my first British Championships gold, in my very first British Championships competing in the 1500m… it’s all a lot of firsts and I’m delighted with everything. “Going into this race, I didn’t have the qualification time, so I was unsure if I would be going, so I’m ecstatic to be on the plane. I haven’t done many 1500m races and my coach wanted me to use this as a learning experience to help with my 800m performances. I think, after today, my coach will want me in the 1500m field more frequently.

There were 2 other championship winners, firstly JADE IVE won the Pole Vault title with a seasons best of (4.35m) following on from her 2nd place in the 2022 championships. Finally SCOTT LINCOLN won the Shot Put title with a seasons best of (20.36m) which is his 5th UK indoor title.

RYAN CROUSER BREAKS WORLD SHOT PUT RECORD  The following article was published on the Athletics Weekly website recently.

American thrower sets outright world record at the Simplot Games in Idaho on Saturday. RYAN CROUSER says he has been tweaking his technique this winter in the never-ending quest for improvement. The shot put legend simply used his tried-and-trusted method, though, as he beat his indoor world record of (22.82m) and outdoor world record of (23.37m) with a mighty (23.38m) in Idaho on Saturday (Feb 18). Competing indoors at the Simplot Games in Pocatello, the 30-year-old improved his outright world record – which was set in Eugene in June last year – by one centimetre. He has a good history at the Simplot Games, too, as he set a US indoor high school record there back in 2011. The two-time Olympic and reigning world champion has now surpassed the 23-metre barrier in seven competitions during his career so far.

PHOTOGRAPH’S – From time to time we have photographs of our members taken at meetings or presentations which we would like to use both on the website or incorporated within our report to our local newspaper. Can you please let me know if you do NOT want your photograph to be published. Also, I would appreciate if you could send me any photographs, which I can then publish on the website and newsletter.

FACEBOOK – Photographs can be found on the SBH page.

CAN YOU HELP PLEASEI would welcome any contributions From Yourselves, any impending marriages, or additions to the family, any running or competing incidents, also past warm weather training/holidays (No Club 24 please). Currently the response has been excellent, but if you have anything that could make it into next week’s Newsletter – please email me.

CURRENT DISTRIBUTION OF SHAFTESBURY INFORMATION Currently I notify members (by email) using “MailChimp”. The reason I changed, was in November 2017 “Gmail” put a limit of 100 addresses that users could send to in a 24-hour period, and currently I send to approximately 850 members each issue.

On seeking technical advice “MailChimp” was recommended as the best way for SBH to go forward. There is one thing you should be aware off is that when you receive an email from me, the footer at the bottom has 4 options, of which one is “Unsubscribe Me From List”. Could I ask you not to select this as if you do you will be automatically removed from my distribution list.
