HOW MUCH DOES MILEAGE MATTER – The following was published on Athletics Weekly website recently, explaining how distance runners can become fixated on weekly mileage, often to their detriment, says Matt Long.

Racking up the miles is part and parcel of developing the aerobic energy system for any endurance athlete. But there are two opposite schools of thought about how best it should be done.
One camp insists that training should involve a high volume of work designed to overload the system, the other camp that ‘less is more’ –the quality of what you do is far more important than the quantity.
So just how much does mileage matter? Are you doing more or less than is necessary? There is no straightforward answer and much depends on your genetics and individual strengths and weaknesses. But to help pick your way through the maze of training advice, we’ve consulted four leading experts for the ultimate advice. They are: Andy Butchart: impressed greatly with his sixth place in the Rio Olympic 5000m, Pippa Woolven with Beth Potter to her left (pictured): has been a regular GB international of late over the country and Charlie Spedding: famously bagged a London marathon victory and Olympic bronze in 1984.
Their collective wisdom leaves us with eight golden rules to follow.
Rule 1 – Avoid junk mileage – “Mileage does matter but only appropriate mileage,” says Duval. “Being efficient and capable of sustaining a certain pace is more important”.
Woolven agrees: “I try not to get too hung up on it. I don’t believe in doing ‘junk miles’”.
Rule 2 – Periodise your training – This is something many athletes get wrong. Yet periodising your training into distinct blocks and tapering before competition will help with your long-term development.
“On average I do more miles in the winter,” Butchart says. “We still do high mileage in summer but it’s less frequent as we cut it down for the track races.”
Woolven agrees that mileage is important, especially in the winter months. “If I can build up a solid endurance base with some consistent training before Christmas then I find it usually sets me up well,” she says.
Rule 3 – Mileage to facilitate recovery – Not all miles must be run at significant pace. What’s key, says Duval, is to remember that your miles can have a different focus.
“Slower mileage is needed to aid recovery and speed up the body’s adaptation to intense workouts,” he says. Steady aerobic work sets you up for higher intensity training achieved through speed and speed endurance work which is more dependent on the lactate and ATP-CP energy systems.
Rule 4 – Build a mileage component into speed and strength endurance sessions – This is where you can get clever with your miles.
“Mileage can be incorporated into specific workouts to enable athletes to keep higher mileage up if they are time poor and can only train once a day,” Duval says.
For example, a 10min warm-up, then 15-20min threshold run, then straight into an interval session either on roads or the track, followed by a 15-20min threshold and 10min cool down”.
Spedding, author of the cult endurance autobiography From Last to First, says that even when training for the marathon, he added 5x1600m with 400m in 90sec as the recovery.
Woolven adds that the kind of aerobic development facilitated by high mileage can be achieved within sessions that build other components of fitness, such as strength endurance. “I think hill reps can be really useful to build strength and, when combined with some blocks of tempo, make a good session,” she says.
Rule 5 – Don’t become a slave to mileage – So many athletes fall into this trap, says Spedding. Yet an obsession with clocking miles can result in injury.
“I used to run between 70-80 miles per week when I was running 5km and 10km on the track,” Spedding says. “This included a 20-mile run almost every week. I suffered from a lot of Achilles tendon problems during my track career and didn’t want to push the mileage too high in case it increased my injuries.”
An obsession with mileage can lead to psychological as well as physiological staleness, Woolven warns. “Cross country in the UK can be a long season though so if I obsessed over mileage too much then I think I’d start to suffer,” she says.
Mileage should be a means to an end. “When I trained for the marathon, I tried to do a six-week spell of between 100-110 miles per week, which ended three weeks before the race,” Spedding says. “I say tried because I rarely managed to achieve it.”
Rule 6 – Know when to back off – “If I felt unwell or sore or simply too tired I would back off the miles,” says Spedding. “I always felt it was better to miss a few miles than to risk a serious problem. I always regarded certain sessions as much more important than that extra five-mile run that gets me to the mileage target.
“I wonder if runners now are too fixated on high mileage. Are they willing to back off if they have a niggle or a sore throat? It’s crucial to do that.”
Rule 7 – Cross training – Substituting additional miles with another activity can be beneficial. Woolven says her aim during the winter months is to hit 70 miles per week, yet “some years it’s been higher – around 80 miles – and some years more like 50-60 miles”.
This winter she says she’s been hitting around 60 miles per week with a packed racing schedule.
“But I’ve also been substituting a couple of runs for some cycling,” Woolven says. “I’d far rather jump on the bike as a substitute for an easy run if I feel like I’d benefit more from it”.
Rule 8 – Athlete-centredness – Our physiological make-ups are vastly different and to improve we need diverse modes of training. “Every athlete is different,” says Butchart. “Some of us can cope with high mileage and some prefer the strength and conditioning side of training.
“I always think the sooner you can work out what works best for you the better. Do what works for you and stick to it.”
Individuality is highly important. “There is no set amount of mileage that produces winners as athletes are all different,” Duval agrees. “Some thrive on 150 miles per week, but others do just as well on 70 miles per week.”
What’s vital is determining your uppermost limit. “Finding your most beneficial mileage, and running up to it but not beyond it, is crucial,” says Spedding.

FAREWELL TO JOHN – 40 years a groundsman at Copthall and Allianz Park

BRYAN SMITH and GEOFF WILLIAMS attended his funeral at Hendon Crematorium – the chapel was full and the service included several very moving eulogies, particularly from his daughter and granddaughter but also from Alex, a Saracens work colleague. They all spoke about him being a real family orientated person, very keen on gardening and a very positive influence on everyone he met. He was a very hard worker and an utterly reliable and conscientious colleague. His knowledge of athletic groundsmanship was second to none. The above photograph shows the big screen at the Saracens v Sale match on Saturday 25 February when there was a similar announcement and a minutes silence in John’s memory.

SIX OF LONDON’S BEST LUNCHTIME RUNS The following article was published on the Athletics Weekly website recently.
A team from The Color Run UK – the ‘Happiest 5K on the Planet’ – has put together a selection of runs to help you stay happy and healthy during your London lunch breaks
Each route varies in gradient and, depending on fitness level, can be made as hard or easy as you wish.
Running during your lunch break is not only a great way to improve fitness levels, but also provides a good excuse to escape the office for some fresh air. Exercising at lunch can have many positive benefits such as boosting mood levels and improving your chances of having a productive afternoon.

Regents Park and Primrose Hill
Regents Park provides multiple runs that offer scenic landscapes and a variety of routes that cater to all levels of fitness. Regents Park is the ultimate lunchtime escape, allowing your mind to block out the hustle and bustle of the office environment. For those looking for an extra challenge, why not head up to the top of Primrose Hill and be rewarded with unparalleled views of the city? This run is great for those based in North East London with Regent’s Park and Baker Street station just around the corner.

Tower Bridge to London Bridge (or Waterloo)
A popular route among people working in the city or on the Southbank. This route is flexible as runners can start anywhere along Embankment, while allowing you to take in amazing river views like the London Eye. This route can get busy during the summer time, so best to stick to smaller groups. This is also perfect for interval training due to the flat incline – so why not challenge yourself with some sprints? The nearest stations are Temple, Bank, Mansion House, Embankment and Southwark.

Euston – Kings Cross Canal
A flexible north London run which is ideal for those based near Camden Town, Euston, Kings Cross or Angel. This peaceful pocket of London allows you to take full advantage of the scenic canal, enabling you to feel miles away from the chaotic office atmosphere. Runners can start at Camden and head East towards Kings Cross for a quick lunchtime jog. For those wanting more of a challenge you can head down to Angel and back again. If your office is located near Granary Square take advantage of the water fountains during the summer months and cool off.

Royal Parks (x2) – Embankment to Green Park/St James
The famous four park run can be cut in half to achieve a quick lunchtime fix that won’t eat way at your itinerary. Runners can start at Embankment and head to St James’ Park, then on to Green Park. A lap around each and then back to Embankment is 5km. This run is perfect for clocking up those lunchtime miles in record time as it’s all flat. For an epic marathon-worthy moment, run along The Mall and get those endorphins rushing. You’ll feel ready to tackle the rest of the day after this run.

Battersea Park
If you’re starting in Chelsea, cross over the Chelsea Bridge and head straight into Battersea Park. Running around the boundary clocks is around 3.5km and there’s some lovely sights to keep you going. Head past the zoo, around the far border of the park by the lake and back along next to the Thames before crossing the bridge on the way back to the office. This picturesque run is a great one to if you’re based west and need to de-stress. The nearest stations are Battersea Park and Queenstown Road.

Greenwich Park
Be warned, this run is not for the faint-hearted. Greenwich Park boasts one of the most stunning views of the city, but that comes at a price. Get those hill sprints in with your colleagues as you tackle the mighty incline up to Greenwich Observatory, before heading down again and enjoying a lap or two of the flat park to finish off. This run is great for those looking to blow off some steam. Once back in the office, you can refuel with a mighty carbohydrate filled lunch. The nearest train stations are Maze Hill, Blackheath and Greenwich over ground.

NATIONAL CROSS COUNTRY PHOTOGRAPHS – I managed to find some outstanding photographs of all our athletes from the Gallery section of the English Cross Country Association website, I have selected what I thought was the best photographs of each athlete, but many have up to maybe 10 photographs. There are now 5 photograph albums on the SBH website, which are by age-groups. This link will take you directly to the albums http://sbharriers.co.uk/gallery-category/cross-country/

The course was somewhat muddy, and you will see that reflected in the SAMUEL GREENSTEIN photo.

Not long after the start of the Senior Men’s race

If you wish view all the photographs, and additional ones then please use the please ECCA link http://www.englishcrosscountry.co.uk/the-national-cross-country-championships/entry-lists/ You now have the ‘Entry Lists’ displayed, select an age-group, then scroll down to SBH and note the ‘Bib Number’ you want. Now select ‘Nationals’ then ‘Gallery’ then ‘Pic2Go at the Nationals 2017’, now you can enter the Bib Number to search for all photographs.

VINCO RUNJUMPTHROW Are a web based video provider of athletic events, and currently available to view are the England U15/U17/U20 and BUCS Indoor Championships, also the Scottish and BUCS Cross Country Championships. KYLE LANGFORD LOOKING FORWARD TO A FAST FUTURE – The following article was published on the Athletics Weekly website recently.

Training changes and enjoying racing have made a big difference to the British indoor 600m record-breaker
He might have run 600m indoors quicker than any other Briton ever has, but KYLE insists he could have gone even faster in Athlone earlier this month.
The 21-year-old clocked 1:16.10 at the AIT International Grand Prix on February 15 to improve on DAI GREENE’S time of 1:16.22 from 2013.
That came after a below-par performance at the British Athletics Indoor Team Trials in Sheffield, where he finished fifth over 800m. Following his record-breaking run in Ireland, Langford went on to place third at the Müller Indoor Grand Prix, running an indoor PB of 1:46.79 for third.
“I’m happy but at the same time I’m that type of person, I always want to better what I’ve run,” said KYLE on his 600m. “I thought I could have gone faster. With how the pacing went, I felt decent, so I definitely think there’s a lot more to knock off there.”  What makes his performance all the more impressive is that before this year, the European junior gold medallist hadn’t raced indoors since 2014, and even then, that was to contest a sole 400m.
Although disappointed with his run in Sheffield, KYLE – who has since been selected for GB’s European Indoor Championships team – says the race served a positive purpose and made him even more motivated. “I felt physically fine but mentally, it was my first race and I think I went into it a bit raw,” he said. “I lost concentration and when you lose concentration indoors it’s really unforgiving.
“I think it was a learning curve for me. I needed a bit of a kick up the a***. My main aim going into the indoor season was wanting to break the 600m record.
“I was really disappointed after Sheffield but it’s just one of those things. You’ve got to bounce back from it and I did that in two days.”
Having struggled with injury last year, the Shaftesbury Barnet athlete says he is now taking things more seriously and changes to his training programme, including the introduction of strength and conditioning, have made a big difference. KYLE is enjoying racing again and that is being reflected in his performances.
“Something that I didn’t do in the past is enjoy moments,” said the Watford-based runner, who gives huge credit to his coach, George Harrison. “It comes and goes so quick. I’ve realised, take your time and just make the most of it so that’s what I’m going to do.”
Having competed at the IAAF World Championships in Beijing two years ago, one particular moment KYLE hopes to enjoy this summer is reaching the final when the championships take place in London.
“All in my mind is that I want to make the final at Worlds,” he said. “I think making the final at Worlds is harder than winning a medal. Once you’re in a final any of the eight people can win a medal.
“Making the final is a massive thing for me. That’s what I’m aiming for.”

SAFETY ADVERTISEMENTI wanted to let you know about a new range of running/cycling vests that we have brought to the UK from the USA called RoadNoise
There are 2 models;
The Original – The original has built in speakers in the shoulders so you can listen to your favourite music whilst you run but without completely blocking out important background noise (i.e. cars, traffic, lorries etc.) which makes it a much safer option over ear-buds. It also features nice bright reflective stripes for added visibility on the road. Comes in a range of sizes and colours. It is also allowed in relay competitions where ear-buds are banned.
The Long Haul – The Long Haul is similar to The Original but is more advanced with the addition of an amplifier for increased sound, loads of pockets to hold reservoirs, bottles, lights etc. (we also sell a range of Hydrapak products which work seamlessly with the Long Haul).

You can learn more about both models at our website www.roadnoise.co.uk
The other reason I wanted to contact you is to offer you and your club members an intro offer of 20% off the RRP as we are keen to get the vests out there and get some feedback so we can further improve and refine the products.
Simply use the code INTRO20%OFF at checkout to get the discount.
