ZHARNEL HUGHES ASPIRATIONS FOR THE UPCOMING WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS The following article was published on the Athletics Weekly website recently.

ZHARNEL says last summer, which featured a European 100m title win and a PB of 9.91, was just “the tip of the iceberg” and has left him hungry for more.
The 24-year-old clocked 9.95 in Berlin to secure the first major individual gold of his senior career and he is now dreaming of a double in Doha as he looks to add world and then Olympic success to his continental triumph.
“Getting that gold medal was a surreal feeling, it was something that I’ve always dreamt about,” said Hughes, who also formed part of the winning GB and England 4x100m teams at the European Championships and Commonwealth Games in 2018.
“It can only get better. It makes me hungrier to achieve world championships golds and Olympic golds and to see what that feels like.
“Last season was just the tip of the iceberg,” adds the Jamaica-based sprinter, whose 100m best places him joint second behind LINFORD CHRISTIE on the UK all-time list. “It makes me hungrier but I try not to dwell too much on the past. This season is a whole different ball game.”
The game continues in London this weekend as Hughes forms part of a Diamond League 100m line-up also featuring the likes of Jamaica’s 2011 world champion YOHAN BLAKE, South Africa’s Commonwealth champion AKANI SIMBINE and Canada’s triple Olympic medallist ANDRE DE GRASSE.
“I’m just trying my best to stay focused and get my execution done, that’s the main focus going into the race this weekend,” says ZHARNEL ahead of the Müller Anniversary Games. “It’s not really about times, it’s not really about winning the race. Once you execute, things will come together and I’ll get the victory.
“I’m always excited to run in the London Stadium. It’s iconic. Each time you step out there, it’s sensational the feeling you get from the crowd.”
With his season’s best of 9.97 putting him joint top of this summer’s UK rankings so far, and with that European title and 9.91 PB to his name, Hughes knows he’s a target when it comes to domestic battles and is considering running both the 100m and the 200m at the British Championships in Birmingham next month as he aims to contest both events at the World Championships.
“The times I have been running so far, it’s definitely not where I want to be,” he says. “I know I’m ahead of that, it’s just that I’ve been messing up my execution a bit.
“I do know that the guys are looking at me because I won the European Championships last season and I’m running consistent nine seconds, so I’ve definitely become a target.
“The focus is to better my time leading up toward the championships. Once I get that done it gives me more confidence than I already have. Once I get through trials and all goes well, I’m healthy – I get to Doha and I just need to do what I need to do.”

A WARNING REGARDING OPEN MEETINGS 2019 – I spoke to 2 of the organisers of open meetings, regarding whether there was a closing date for their meeting, especially as now entries are online only. Their response was when a meeting opens on the online system, there could be a 100m event that takes place between 19.00pm to 19.45pm, they would have ascertained that between these times there will be 8 races. Once the 64 entries for those 8 races have been filled, the event is therefore closed. Therefore, there could be a chance that an event could be closed 1 Week or 2 weeks before the meeting date. Therefore, please beware of this.

CURRENT DISTRIBUTION OF SHAFTESBURY INFORMATION Currently I notify members (by email) using “MailChimp”. The reason I changed, was in November 2017 “Gmail” put a limit of 100 addresses that users could send to in a 24-hour period, and currently I send to approximately 850 members each issue.

On seeking technical advice “MailChimp” was recommended as the best way for SBH to go forward. There is one thing you should be aware off is that when you receive an email from me, the footer at the bottom has 4 options, of which one is “Unsubscribe Me From List”. Could I ask you not to select this as if you do you will be automatically removed from my distribution list.

EUROPEAN UNDER 20 CHAMPIONSHIPSTook place last week at Boras, Sweden. This is the 25th time the Championships have taken place, with the first one in 1970 in Paris, France.
Commiseration’s to KRISTIAN IMROTH who in the Final of the 3000m Steeplechase had a fall at the water jump. He was running perfectly as planned sitting out of trouble and made his move to the front with 1km to go, cruised past the field and went into the top 3 over the water jump, took a clip and went down and rolled. He was 25m back when he got up. He laboured on, and got to finish line. Currently on crutches just as a precaution.
Obviously absolutely gutted as genuinely feel he was prepped to maybe snatch a medal and given the pace – who knows.
He’s bitterly disappointed, but that’s part of athletics. But at 17 to be in the Euro final is a fantastic achievement, sadly it didn’t get the end result his hard work deserved

3000m Steeplechase – Heat 2 KRISTIAN IMROTH 5th (9:05.96) in the Final KRISTIAN finished 14th (9:25.19)

SBH SUPPORT IS EVERYWHERE – LIZZIE BIRD has told me at the race at Saint Maur Des-Fosses, France in which she lowered the clubs Senior Women’s 3000m Steeplechase record, that during the race she was very excited to hear someone shout “go Shaftesbury!” half way through. Whoever it was gave me a much-needed morale boost (and surprised me – since it was a small, mostly local, meet!) and made me feel a part of something bigger. Appreciate being part of the club even though I haven’t been in the UK much these past few years!

ALEXANDER STADIUM REVEDEVLOPMENT PLANS PUBLISHED – The following article was published on the Athletics Weekly website.

Plans detailing the design for the redevelopment of Alexander Stadium ahead of the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games have been published. The release of the plans comes as a public consultation into the revamp begins.
The Perry Barr venue, which is the home of UK Athletics, will host the athletics plus the opening and closing ceremonies at the Games, set to take place from July 27 to August 7, 2022.

New artist impressions of the stadium have been released “revealing Birmingham City Council’s intentions to create a legacy asset the city and its residents can be truly proud of”.
The changes to the 40-year-old stadium, which currently hosts the British Championships and Diamond League events annually, will include an increase in permanent seating capacity from 12,700 to 18,000, allowing up to 40,000 during the Games through additional temporary seating.
The competition track will be re-laid and a six lane, 400m warm-up track will be built. A new western stand will replace the Main, Knowles and Nelson stands, while there will be new tiered seating to the north and south.
Other key features include the installation of new stadium lighting and a practice throwing field, improved public realm and parking provision and a new access road from the A453 Aldridge Road for event and maintenance use.
Cllr IAN WARD, leader of Birmingham City Council, said: “We’re now in an exciting phase of the design process where we would like to share our plans for the future with the community and hear their thoughts.
“The team has designed a redeveloped stadium which will meet the needs and aspirations of the community for generations to come. This is about creating a destination venue, shaping a legacy beyond the Commonwealth Games.
“We are making lots of information and detail available, so I encourage as many people as possible to come along, have a look at the designs and provide their feedback.”

A BLAST FROM THE PASTIt’s a bit unusual to see three stripy vests in a 9.00 a.m. Parkun so far from base-camp but it happened last Saturday at the Wimpole Estate (Results Above). About 45 years ago this trio would have been half a useful team in the 6-stage.  Not these days though. From left JULIAN GOATER 1st V65, JOHN DRYDEN 2nd V70, HUGH RICHARDS 1st V70.  This is the “before” picture.  The “after” picture is pretty much the same, but sweatier.

SOPHIE FORBES-LAIRDLast Sunday SOPHIE won the 300m Under 15 Girls Gold Medal at the Eastern Regional Championships at Cambridge University, this follows her Silver Medal in the Eastern Indoor Champs last January.

SOPHIE has been selected to run the 300m for Bedfordshire at the English Schools Championships in Birmingham on the 12-13 July. Following this SOPHIE says she will be a proud member of the Club’s 4x100m Under 15 Girls relay team racing in the Club Connect Relays at Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park on 21 July.

The reason I changed, was in November last year “Gmail” put a limit of 100 addresses that users could send to in a 24-hour period, and currently I send to approximately 850 members each issue.
