We Need More Officials!
A big thank you to one of our readers for highlighting just how important our officials are to the success of Shaftesbury Barnet Harriers. Just to highlight, Athletes aren’t the only people earning points for the club. At league fixtures, we are required to provide officials, including track judges, timekeepers and field judges. When we provide a full team, these officials can earn the club up to 50 valuable points. At our recent NAL meeting, we received just 15 points from officials, while Chelmsford earned the full 50. For home fixtures, we also need to provide a number of key roles, including the track referee, chief timekeeper, field referee, technical manager, and starting and marking teams.
The club will pay the course fees for members who want to qualify as an official, provided they commit to officiating during the season. Whether you’re a parent, athlete, coach or simply someone who wants to support the club, becoming an official is a fantastic way to get involved and make a real difference. Our officials are an essential part of the club — and we’d love to see more members joining them.
Interested in getting involved? Please get in touch info@shaftesburybarnet.co.uk and help us build a stronger team for the future.
ATHLOS LDN26 – World-class athletics comes to StoneX
Closer to home, just a reminder that Athlos is coming to StoneX Stadium this September.
The London line-up keeps getting stronger, with Tobi Amusan, the Nigerian 100m hurdles world record holder, now confirmed to compete. Joining already confirmed, Keely Hodgkinson headling the 800m as she looks to defend her ATHLOS title, while Georgia Hunter Bell, Amber Anning and Rhasidat Adeleke are also among the latest names confirmed.
Friday 18 September | 7pm | StoneX Stadium 🎟️ Tickets are on sale here – Adult Tickets start from £25; however don’t leave it until the last minute as these lower priced tickets are extremely limited.
In the build-up to this event, a reminder to all Coaches and Athletes that StoneX will be closed for a week from Saturday 12th Sept – Sunday 20th September – there will be no access to the track during this time so please make alternative arrangements for your training sessions.
Shaftesbury Alumni
Colin Boreham – UK Decathlon
Colin Boreham is one of Shaftesbury Barnet Harriers’ Olympians, representing Great Britain in the decathlon at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympic Games. He finished 20th overall with 7,485 points, competing alongside fellow Britons Daley Thompson, who successfully defended his Olympic title, and Brad McStravick.
Boreham’s career was built on remarkable versatility. Before concentrating on the decathlon, he was a leading high jumper, finishing third at the 1971 AAA Championships and second in 1972. He subsequently developed into one of Britain’s leading multi-eventers, winning the 1981 AAA decathlon title with 7,639 points.
His international career also included an impressive 13th-place finish in the decathlon at the 1982 European Championships in Athens, scoring 7,762 points. Earlier that same year, he recorded 7,874 points at the prestigious Götzis Hypo-Meeting, with personal bests including 48.17 for 400m, 7.16m in the long jump and 2.06m in the high jump.
Boreham joined Shaftesbury in 1983 as a GB international in both the high jump and decathlon. The club described him at the time as an outstanding all-round athlete and highlighted his particular expertise in the high jump, pole vault and shot put.
Following his athletics career, Boreham went on to have an equally impressive career in sports science and exercise research, eventually becoming Professor and Director of the Institute for Sport and Health at University College Dublin. His sporting career and subsequent academic work make him a fascinating example of an athlete whose influence extended well beyond the track.
