WOMEN IN SPORT WEEK – The following video features Shaftebury’s JOYCE SMITH MBE winning the first London Marathon in 1981, at the age of 43 in a personal best time of (2:29.57). In 1983 JOYCE was selected to run the Marathon in the World Championships in Helsinki, Finland finishing 9th (2:34.27). Her consistency was rewards with being selected for the 1984 Olympics in a warm Los Angeles, at the age of 46, finishing 11th (2:32.48).
Earlier in her career JOYCE was selected to run the 1500m at the 1972 Munich Olympics, in the heats she finished 4th (4:11.3), and in the semi-final finished 6th with her current personal best (4:09.37). POLE VAULT SUMMER CAMP  We would like to offer our pole vault summer camps to anyone that would like to attend. We know that clubs are always looking for pole vaulters to help them score points and that they don’t always have either the facilities or a coach to help them do this at their local track. Our two day intensive camps are suitable for anyone from beginners to more experienced vaulters, and are being held on 14/15 and 21/22 August.
Myself and former National Coach Mentor – ELLIE SPAIN, lead on the camps and have assistant coaches to support us over the two days.
https://www.westlondontrackandfield.com/events/
We also welcome coaches on to the camp that want to learn how to coach the event or expand on their current knowledge of coaching pole vault.
If you have any questions, please let me know – RICH HUMBY on 07837839996.

WORLD PARA ATHLETICS CHAMPIONSHIP– Head coach PAULA DUNN reflects on the success of some of this year’s GB World Para Athletics Championships team-members and looks ahead to the London event
Five years after watching many rising British stars shine at the London 2012 Paralympic Games, PAULA is proud to see HANNAH COCKCROFT, ALED DAVIES and JONNIE PEACOCK among those leading the GB team for next month’s World Para Athletics Championships back in the UK capital.
A 51-strong squad has been named for the event in London, to be held from July 14-23, and she is pleased with the mix of both youth and experience.
“I’m really happy with the team selection,” says the former sprinter, who became GB para athletics head coach in November 2012 and was a key member of PETER ERIKSSON’S coaching staff at the London Paralympics. “When I look at athletes like JONNIE, ALED and HANNAH, they were in the first group of athletes I looked after when I started.
“To have seen them in 2012 winning medals and to go right through to Rio and then come back to the London Stadium once again is absolutely brilliant. “They are now our senior athletes and they are really good role models.”
A total of 21 Rio Paralympic medallists, including 10 champions, will be joined at the London Stadium by a quartet of debutants – T13 sprinter and jumper ZAK SKINNER, T20 athlete MARTINA BARBER, T38 runner JACK GLADMAN and T42 long jumper LUKE SINNOTT – who will pull on the senior GB vest for the first time.
Among those 10 Rio gold medallists are COCKCROFT, DAVIES, PEACOCK and RICHARD WHITEHEAD, all of whom also topped the podium at the London Paralympics five years ago and will be hoping for similar success at the same venue in the coming weeks.
Since stepping into her current role, on a world level DUNN’S GB teams have won no fewer than 29 medals, including 11 gold, at the 2013 Championships in Lyon, and 31 medals, including 13 gold, in Doha in 2015. This time the target is 26 to 30 medals.
“Success breeds success and I’m a great believer in that,” DUNN explains. “So people coming into the team know what the expectation is. “I want everybody to compete as well as they can and enjoy the experience. If you do those two things, success generally comes.”

The lead coach is Gintare Dargeviciute who brings a wealth of experience and knowledge to the club.

3 NEW CLUB RECORDCongratulations to MIA GROOMCRISTINA POTTER and TARIQ WILD who achieved a club record over the week-end.
MIA competed at last Saturday’s BMC meeting in the 1500m Steeplechase running (5:18.11) taking 8.19 seconds off her 28 May time, ranking her UK No.5 in 2017. MIA’S time eclipses SOPHIA PARVIZI-WAYNE’S Under 17 Women’s time of (5:21.6) set in Derby on 9 September 2012. Also, is a Hertfordshire record (to be confirmed) which was set by our own LUCY YATES (5:25.0) set in 2006.
CRISTINA broke the Under 17 Women’s 500g Javelin record with a throw of (35.72m) at last Sunday’s EYAL fixture in Luton. CRISTINA’S distance eclipses KLAUDIA DEBRECZENI throw of (33.70m) set at Lee Valley on 16 May 2015.
TARIQ also at the EYAL fixture broke the Under 15 Boys 300m record in a time of (37.7) eclipsing NAJIBE ARBI’S (37.9) set at Allianz Park on 11 June 2016.

BRITISH ATHLETICS LEAGUE – The second match of the season took place at Lee Valley last Saturday. A much better day at the office last Saturday at Lee Valley saw SBH bounce back from their disappointing 5th = in Round One of the BAL in Sheffield to secure a clear 2nd place in Round Two. After 2 rounds the men’s team are now in the top 4.

CONFIDENCE LAWSON had an up and down day, winning the 100m “A” in a quality field and then found himself DQ for running out of his lane in the 200m “A” after finishing strongly in 3rd place. Our young 400m pairing of SAM HAZELL and MATTHEW PAGAN both ran really well with a PB for SAM and an SB for MATTHEW. The 1500m was a great race with the first 6 home all running under 3.52. KYLE LANGFORD was pipped on the line but was rewarded with an impressive new PB whilst JACK CRABTREE ran a really mature race to run a SB for victory in the “B”. It was good to see RICHARD GOODMAN and KOJO KYEREME flying the flag with top 3 finishes in the 5000m. An inspired 4 x 100m team was thrown together at the last minute and greatly exceeded expectations with their 3rd place. Overall, special mention on the track for JAMES DAVIS (U20) who gap filled at the last minute in the 400m Hurdles and the 3000m Steeplechase when the original selections dropped out on the Friday with illness and injury.

However, it was the field squad that was awesome. The Triple Jump provided a unique result with SBH taking the top 3 spots, not only did NONSO OKOLO win the “A” and DANIEL LEWIS win the “B” but our guest athlete JAMES MCLACHLAN performed better than everyone else from the other clubs. We also had the current British number one and World Championship qualifier NATHAN FOX watching from the side-lines. The High Jump was equally exciting with DAVID SMITH taking the “A”, ALLAN SMITH taking the “B” with our guest jumper MONTEZ BLAIR equalling ALLAN’s performance. Our Discus throwers were equally dominant with both ZANE DUQUEMIN and ANGUS MCINROY winning the “A” and “B” respectively by nearly 6m. STEVE TURNOCK was in a class of his own winning the javelin competition by over 5m and DANIEL BAINBRIDGE (U20) in his BAL debut securing 3rd place in the “B”. In the Shot, MICHALIS STAMATOGIANNIS survived a minor back injury in warm-up but still managed 2nd place. The team faced frustration in the Hammer with our top 6 throwers being unavailable. Hopefully our 2 top men, CHRIS BENNETT and DEMPSEY MCGUIGAN should turn a double 8th this time into a double 1st at the nest match.

The 3rd round of the BAL on Saturday 15 July at Bedford will be a unique experience with the meeting hosting all 5 divisions at an all-day extravaganza of club athletics. In addition, the individual winners of each event will be selected to represent the BAL at the Manchester International on Wednesday 16 August.

3 CLUB RECORDS LAST WEEK-END  Congratulations to SOPHIA OBI whose (15.72) eclipsed the Under 17 100m Hurdles record (15.9) set by JACKIE WELLESLEY on 5 April 1981 at Enfield, HANNAH FOSTER whose (44.28) eclipsed the Under 17 300m Hurdles record (46.48) set by RACHEL CARTER on 26 June 2016 at Allianz Park, finally JAZZ SEARS whose (12.07m) eclipsed the Under 17 Triple Jump record (11.77m) set by JADE ATTOH on 14 June 2008 at Crystal Palace.

UK YOUTH DEVELOPMENT LEAGUE SOUTHERN PREMIER 1  Took place last Sunday in Bromley. We had an excellent day with a number of athletes stepping in at the last minute to score a point and at the end of the day, that was the difference which secured SBH 2nd place ahead of Windsor by just 3.5 points, out of a total of 710.

There were many outstanding performances, far too many to mention individually however, in my view, I would highlight, HANNAH FOSTER with her double PB victories in the U17 300m Hurdles (44.28) and 200m (24.98). SOPHIE MADDOCK who won the U17 800m running from the front during a heavy thunderstorm in a PB of 2.15.87, an improvement of nearly 5 seconds and a 55 place move up the national rankings. The women’s U17 4 x 100m relay team of LATIFAH HARRIS-OSMAN, SOPHIA OBI, KIERRA GRANT, CHINWE IWUNZE who not only won the race but were just 0.1 outside the club record with 49.94.

The return from injury of MATTHEW PAGAN saw him win the 400m in 48.30. The amazing points accumulation by GEORGE EVANS in the HT, SP, JT and DT and by BILLY PRAIM-SINGH in the HT, SP and JT. DAVID STONE with a 27 second improvement in his 3000m time to 9.05.28 and a 68 place move up the rankings. Last but not least the fantastic performances in the men’s double victories in the U17 4 x 100m and 4 x 400m relays. The sprint squad of MICAH AGYEPONG, MICHAEL ADEBAKIN, JOSH KUMAR, ROBERT THOMAS ran 44.46 just 5/100th outside the club record and improved to number 4 in this year’s rankings. The 4 x 400m squad of NAJIBE ARBE (53.2), JOSHUA KUMAR (52.0), MITTIO MOHAMMADIAN (53.1), ANTHONY KHORASSANJIAN (52.8) were even more impressive, with the fastest time of the year in the UK of 3.31.04.
The third round of the YDL is on Sunday 25 June in Reading with the final round at Allianz Park on Sunday 23 July.

TIME IS SQUEEZED FOR JUMPS ATTEMPTS  The IAAF is halving the amount of time that High Jumpers and Pole Vaulters have to take their attempt from 60 to 30 seconds. The rule change was agreed at the IAAF recent council meeting in London and will be introduced from 1 November.
Not surprisingly athletes have reacted with mild outrage, though SANDI MORRIS, the Olympic pole vault silver medallist from the United States, said “This is a terrible decision. Not only dangerous, but bad for track and field”.
She added; More time equals less sport for fans to watch… it’s unsafe and unnecessary”.
The amount of time that vaulters and high jumpers have to take their attempt when there are fewer than three competitors left in the contest remains the same.

VACANCIES AT LEE VALLEY ATHLETICS CENTRE  The Centre is looking for additional casual staff to take them through the summer and into next winter.
