SOUTHERN ROAD RELAYS – Took place last Sunday 23 September at Crystal Palace National Sports Centre.
An excellent day for the Stripes with the performance of the day coming from our Under 17 Women, becoming Southern Champions by 4 seconds from Bedford & County. On the first leg LIA RADUS finished in 3rd place (4th fastest time of the day) with Tia Wilson of Bedford recording the fastest time of the race finishing 16 seconds in front of LIA, on the second leg FREYA STAPLETON produced and excellent time (5th fastest time of the day) taking the team into first place, and now 22 in front of Bedford, it was left to GRACE INGLES on the final leg to secure the championship. Our Under 17 Women’s record over the past 10 years has been exceptional winning in 2012 and in the top 10 on 8 occasions. Photograph of FREYA, LIA and GRACE with their Gold Medals.

I believe the next best performance of the day (just) came from our Senior Men, with the team of THOMAS BUTLER U23, MATT GRANT, KIERAN CLEMENTS, BRADLEY GOATER, JAKE SHELLEY and JACK CRABTREE U23 finishing in 6th place. A really solid performance and their best result since 2010 when the team finished 4th, which included JAMES TRAPMORE, who ran in the “B” team today.

The Under 15 Boys team of MUKHTAR MUSA, GILAD NACHSHEN, MAHIIS HERSI and LUCA STUBBS were promoted to the Bronze Medals after finishing 4th, as Aldershot finished 1st and 2nd and only 1 team can score from each club. MUKHTAR came in first on the opening leg (2nd fastest time of the day), on the next 2 legs GILAD and MAHIIS kept us in touch, on the final Leg LUCA ran the 3rd fastest time on that leg, although the fastest time was run by M Taylor of Tonbridge which finished just over 6 seconds in front of Shaftesbury. This was MUKHTAR’S first season of athletes, and was ranked UK No.5 at 1500m on the track. Over the past 10 seasons the team won in 2009, 2011 and 2014 and 2nd in 2010.

The Under 17 Mens team of LAURANCE EDWARDS, JUDE MIRANDA, DANIEL GREENSTEIN and DAVID STONE finished in 6th place. After the handover on Leg 3 the team were in 13th place, leaving DAVID a challenge which he took on with gusto making up 7 places, with the 2nd fastest time on the leg and 4th fastest time of the race. Over the past 10 seasons the team won in 2012 and 2016, 2nd in 2009 and 2013 and 3rd in 2011.

Finally, the Under 15 Girls team of MAAYAN RADUS, ELENA RONCARATI and JOANNE MIRANDA finished in 7th place. The girls were consistent throughout and finished less than a minute behind 3rd place. . Over the past 10 seasons the team won in 2012, 3rd in 2013 and 5th in 2010 and 2017.

(3rd – 2nd) Denotes the following 3rd is the position the team were at the end of that leg, 2nd is the position the athlete finished in the top 10 fastest on that leg.

CURRENT DISTRIBUTION OF SHAFTESBURY INFORMATION Currently I notify members (by email) using “MailChimp”. The reason I changed, was in November last year “Gmail” put a limit of 100 addresses that users could send to in a 24-hour period, and currently I send to approximately 850 members each issue.

On seeking technical advice “MailChimp” was recommended as the best way for SBH to go forward. There is one thing you should be aware off is that when you receive an email from me, the footer at the bottom has 4 options, of which one is “Unsubscribe Me From List”. Could I ask you not to select this as if you do you will be automatically removed from my distribution list.

NEW MARATHON WORLD RECORD – On a glorius Sunday morning ib Berlin, the greatest marathon runner od all time became that bit greater. Already the winner of his past eight marathons – including Olympic gold in Rio and three victories in London. The only thing to elude ELIUD KIPCHOGE was DENNIS KIMETTO’S world record of 2 hours, 2 minutes and 57 seconds in Berlin in 2014.

KIPCHOGE 33, did not just beat it, he destroyed it, shattered it. Put it so far out of reach it is difficult to envisage anyone surpassing it for years to come. His incredible winning time was 78 seconds better than the previous mark – the first time the world record had been lowered by more than a minute in a race for 39 years and the single greatest improvement for 51 years.

JOY OGUNLEYE AND REBECCA JEGGO On Saturday 8 September both JOY and REBECCA had an amazing experience competing at the Great North City Games.

The event was held on a purpose-built track at the iconic Gateshead quayside. This included some of the top athletes from the UK as well as the Diamond league circuit, with whom JOY and REBECCA stayed at the same hotel as on the Friday.  They enjoyed dinner with GB sprinter RICHARD KILTY, before meeting others including MO FARAH and GREG RUTHERFORD. Both REBECCA and JOY qualified for the event based on their performance at the English Schools championships in July and competed over the unusual distance of 150m straight.
In the first heat REBECCA finished second in a time of 17.90 qualifying for the “A” final later in the day. In heat two JOY finished third, qualifying for the “B” final with a time of 18:28.
After a short turn around, and in worsening weather conditions, JOY improved her time to 18:27, finishing second in this “B” race. Later in the afternoon after what was a very wet and nervy start line, and on the third attempt after an athlete disqualification, REBECCA finished third in her final in an improved time of 17:76.

SBH PRIVACY STATEMENT – In becoming a member, SBH will collect certain information about you. Can you please read the attached ‘Privacy Statement’ which contains Information on General Data Protection Regulations  SBH Privacy Statement Final April 2018

DAN BRAMBLE Q&A INTERVIEW The following article was published on the Athletics Weekly website, in which DAN chatted with JOHN SHEPHERD about his training, technique and more

AW: Tell us a little about how you got started in athletics. Did you always do the long jump
DB: I started athletics via taekwondo, I always used to jump far on to the mat we had at the start of the sessions and so I got referred to an athletics club. Between athletics I used to play football, I swam and later into my teens I turned to more extreme sport such as BMX riding, skate boarding and Parkour, or free running – the latter of which I feel helped my jumping because it was pretty much an extreme version of plyometrics.

AW: How was the Commonwealth Games experience? And what have been your career highlights?
DB: The Commonwealths were everything I could have asked for – an amazing location, an amazing life in the holding camp and in the village too. Just knowing that we were all there for the same purpose but from such different backgrounds and sports made for a really unique experience that I can’t compare to any other. So far, my career highlight was the World Championships in Beijing in 2015. That really gave me a taste of what it’s like to compete on the big scale and gave me that real hunger for athletics. (DAN jumped 7.83m but missed out on making the final where GREG RUTHERFORD won with 8.41m – Ed.)

AW: When did you realise that you had a talent for the long jump?
DB: I feel I’ve always had a bit of natural bounce. As a baby my mum used to say that I’d cry if I was taken out of my baby bouncer, so those “early sessions” must have really done me well! I realised I was actually not bad at long jump quite later on when I jumped 7.91m in 2013 – then it finally clicked that maybe I could do this as more than a hobby.

AW: Who has motivated you throughout your career?
DB: My parents and friends have really motivated, whether it’s taking me to competitions or daring me that I couldn’t jump a certain distance … they’ve all helped push me in different ways. I think as a youngster watching IRVING SALADINO (2008 Olympic champion) jump huge distances almost effortlessly really inspired me to try and do exactly the same … also JONATHAN EDWARDS, seeing jumps events executed almost perfectly is so pleasing to watch.

AW: Who is/have been your coaches?
DB: My first coach was a guy called PAT CORNELL. I stayed with him from when I started athletics until I was around 18 when I then joined LARRY ACHIKE (1998 Commonwealth Games triple jump champion) and his group. After he moved away in 2012 I went to FRANK ATTOH, who I’m still with.
