MEGAN KEITH AND CHARLES HICKS WIN 5000M GOLD IN ESPOO  The following article was published on the Athletics Weekly website recently.

The future of British distance running is in good hands if results from the European Under-23 Championships in Espoo, Finland, are anything to go by. Firstly MEGAN KEITH struck gold in the women’s 5000m on Thursday evening (July 13) and then, less than 24 hours later, CHARLES HICKS won the men’s 5000m title on Friday morning. Both athletes won in emphatic style after running away from their rivals in the closing stages. KEITH clocked (15:34.33) to beat MARIA FORERO of Spain by nine seconds, while HICKS eased away from host nation hope EEMIL HELANDER to win by five seconds in (13:35.07). Behind, WILL BARNICOAT took bronze in the men’s race but there was heartache for ELOISE WALKER in the women’s race as she broke clear with GB team-mate KEITH in the latter stages and was still in second place with 150m to go but struggled in the home straight, falling due to exhaustion with 20 metres to go before getting up to finish fifth.

The European Cross-Country Championships in Turin last December proved a good form guide to the action in Espoo. At that event seven months ago, KEITH took under-23 silver behind NADIA BATTOCLETTI, HICKS won the under-23 men’s title and FORERO captured the under-20 women’s crown.

KEITH said: “I told myself when I make a move (with just over 2km to go), I needed to make it decisive and I’m really proud that’s what I did. I’m really happy to come away with the win, as we knew the race was going to be unpredictable. “I looked at the screen around 300m to go, and hoped to have enough to keep going, as I saw I had made a gap. I ran at this track last year, and was disappointed how I ran, but I’ve been working hard since then and gained a lot of experience and I’m really happy with how it has gone.” For KEITH, victory was sweeter still after she missed bronze by just two hundredths of a second at the European Under-20 Championships two years ago.

HICKS’ victory came just five days after finishing fourth in the 5000m at the UK Championships. The Stanford student has also recently agreed to join the Nike Bowerman Track Club in the United States and here in Espoo he breezed away impressively from the competition to take gold with gun-to-tape front-running tactics.

DAVE BEDFORD’S 10000m 50TH ANNIVERSARY – The oldest British Championships record in the book has stood the test of time for an amazing half century. Fifty years ago on 13 July 1973 .at Crystal Palace, the British Championships (officially then the AAA) staged the Olympic Trials
At the time, EDWARD HEATH was Prime Minister and Puppy Love by DONNY OSMOND was the No.1 record in the music charts.

As he had not publicised any record attempt or shown any form that suggested anything special was likely, only 3500 fans were present on the Friday night for a programme of predominantly heats but clearly he had a target as he powered through 1600m in (4:17.4). Surprisingly as he was operating at (26:45) pace, he still had four takers. Even at 3000m (8:08.4) – the second fastest ever split after his Olympic opening, TONY SIMMONS, SEPPO TUOMINEN and BERNIE PLAIN remained. The latter two soon dropped off but at 4000m, SIMMONS surprised BEDFORD by going by and leading before BEDFORD went ahead again and pushed on through the fastest ever halfway time of (13:39.4) with SIMMONS (13:41.0) also running a time previously unsurpassed even by CLARKE and BEDFORD. At 6000m he lapped fellow International cross-country winner MIKE TAGG, who tried to briefly help BEDFORD. From 6400m to 8400m and needing 67 second laps, BEDFORD astonishingly reeled off five successive exact 67.0 laps. At 8000m, he had been 15 seconds up on VIREN’S equivalent but clearly was not going to finish like VIREN did but he had a 19 second buffer at 9km and perhaps more importantly was 10 seconds quicker at that point than CLARKE had ever run. While he had slowed to a 67.8 four out, knowing the record was almost certainly his, his last three got faster and a 60.8 final circuit was wildly received by a stadium of 10,000m aficionados as he took over seven seconds off VIREN’S world mark and 16 seconds off his own British (and former European) record (27:30.80). It was the first world record set in London by a Briton since CHRIS CHATAWAY beat VLADIMIR KUTS in an epic 5000m in 1954.

SIMMONS (28:19.4) and PLAIN (28:30.2) survived their suicidal starts to set PBs despite slowing 40 seconds on their second half’s BEDFORD’S lap times were: 63.0, 64.4, 64.9, 65.1, 65.8, 66.4, 66.2, 66.2, 66.6, 66.0, 65.4, 66.0, 66.8, 66.2, 67.2, 67.8, 67.0, 67.0, 67.0, 67.0, 67.0, 67.8, 66.0, 65.2 and 60.8. In the press conference he said: “I planned this from about a week ago. When I left home I was nervous. I’ve been confident in the past and it has not come off.  I had four weeks of really good training and it began to click and last week I knew it was on. Recently I did a session of 2 x 6 laps and I did 6:24 and 6:25 with a jog in between and I wanted to go through in 6:30 tonight (he did 6:29.6). I was conscious of the lap times and got worried with 8 or 9 laps to go as it was feeling quite hard but it should be at that pace! I knew if I kept to 67s I should get the record and kept pushing them as hard as I could.”

DAVE’S coach was BOB PARKER, who was a very good athletics coach but it’s clear that, to those who worked with him, he was so much more than that. PARKER, inducted into the England Athletics Hall of Fame in 2010 at the age of 80 for his services to coaching, led ALISON WYETH to two Olympics, three World Championships and a 3000m Commonwealth bronze medal, while two-time Olympian MARA YAMAUCHI credits him for laying the foundations of the international marathon success of her later career.

A few years earlier, in 1973, he enjoyed what was perhaps his finest hour when he guided DAVID BEDFORD to the world record over 10,000m. “I joined Shaftesbury Harriers in 1964 and he started coaching me in 1965,” says BEDFORD. “BOB became a second father and his wife SYLVIA a second mother. In truth, they had more influence on my development and life than my parents. “BOB had previously coached some of the older Shaftesbury lads and he was still racing himself. I do remember him running the Poly Marathon in the late 60s with me supporting him on a push bike. Up until the 1970s he was still warming up and down with me at training sessions and overseeing fartlek sessions on Hampstead Heath. “He was always there for all of his athletes. Where he got the energy from no-one knows.” He adds: “I have never heard anyone say a bad word about BOB. I had my first beer with him and I will certainly have my last still thinking of him, ever grateful for his love, care and friendship. “When I started being coached by him I was the 73rd best junior in the English Schools Cross Country Championships and, nine years later, I broke the world record for 10,000m.”

PARKER worked full-time as a builder but always made sure he was on hand to help his athletes and, come Tuesday and Thursday evenings, his house in Harrow was a hive of athletic activity, representing as it did the meeting point from where training sessions would start and finish.

A fond recollection from WYETH demonstrates the lengths to which he was willing to go for his charges. “We used to meet at his house, warmed up by running to the track, did our session and then warmed down by running back to his house,” she says. “On a Thursday, we’d run road reps from his house so basically we used to take over the place. “We were all in and out of the loo all the time so he even had a downstairs toilet built so that he could accommodate us, with everyone queuing up in his house! “He did it himself and it was all because he was fed up of waiting for us lot at the training sessions!” She adds: “He was a really kind-hearted person who also gave us plenty of hard training which helped us progress.
“The Parkside AC women he coached won the national cross country team title eight years in a row (1989-1996). He brought us together as a great team that wanted to run for him and his wife SYLVIA.”
YAMAUCHI also has vivid memories of the Parker residence. “His home was a real base for a lot of athletes,” she says. “His living room was covered in photos of athletes he’d coached. “He had, on his wall, the shield for the national team title and it was there for such a long time that he had a kind of shield-shaped faded patch on his wallpaper, because it was there for 364 days a year for several years.

“He had the stars like DAVE BEDFORD and ALISON WYETH but his group had a lot of depth and he was always welcoming to newcomers.” She adds: “He just loved helping young people develop. When you’re a young person you face a lot of decisions about your life – not just about running – but he was very supportive to all the young athletes he was coaching in those sorts of things. “He didn’t have any children of his own but it was almost like we were all his family. And, of course, it was all completely voluntary. He gave so much of his life, wisdom and energy to helping young athletes.”

BOBS passed away on 20 January 2018, and his funeral was on the 7 February at Hendon Cemetery and Crematorium, and the chapel was absolutely full, with over 50 people paying their respects outside.

BETH POTTER NOW SITS TOP OF THE WORLD TRIATHLON CHAMPIONSHIP RANKINGS BETH POTTER won silver at the World Triathlon Championship Super Sprint in Hamburg last Sunday. POTTER, 31, was 10 seconds behind France’s CASSANDRE BEAUGRAND, who won in 21 minutes and 35 seconds. The Super Sprint format is a 300m swim, 7.5km bike ride and a 1.75km run.

POTTER finished sixth in the previous race in Cagliari, having won the opening event of the series in Abu Dhabi. “I woke up feeling a bit ill today actually and I’m proud of how I stuck it out and got through the rounds,” said POTTER. “Today I was back where I belong.”
