BRITISH ATHLETICS LEAGUE – The first match of the season took place in Sheffield last Saturday.
A cold and blustery day greeted all 8 teams for Round One of the BAL Premiership in Sheffield. SBH were in good spirits even though the team had been weakened by injury, illness, warm weather training and conflicting meetings. The match started well with top class performances in the 400m Hurdles from SEB RODGER and a welcome return from injury by LLOYD HANLEY-BYRON.
The Hammer was always going to be tough with our top 4 throwers either in the US or unavailable, so it was left to JAMES HAMBLIN, making his Premiership debut to fly the flag with a throw just a metre short of his PB. SBH once more dominated the Discus with double wins for ZANE DUQUEMIN and ANGUS MCINROY. While the Javelin saw STEVE TURNOCK maintain his good recent form.
JAMES MCLACHLAN showed a welcome return to form with convincing wins in both the long and triple jumps, ably supported by NONSO OKOLO in the TJ. Another new member, MONTEZ BLAIR, the BUCS champion, was making his debut in the HJ in the trickiest of conditions. This was another event where 4 of our top jumpers were not available, but DAN BRAMBLE stepped in at the last moment and cleared a PB of 1.90m and promised to have a HJ training session as he wants to clear 2m. The PV was equally difficult, where we welcomed new U20 member ROSS HADJIPANAYI who was a late addition to the team.
Endurance was badly hit but nevertheless there were a number of highlights. ANTHONY WHITEMAN running a SB in the 800m which was a British and World V45 age group record. After the race, an excited Anthony was confident that he would get the time down to sub 1.50 in better conditions. MO MOHAMED was another late addition to the team and proved he was back from injury with a PB after 4 years of disappointment. Another welcome return was from GLEN WATTS after the disruptions of becoming a new father with the minimum of training still managed to complete both the 3k chase and the 3k flat where JACK CRABTREE had a fine race for 2nd place.
Unfortunately, it was now that bad luck struck the team. ANDREW LAWLER was running well in the 3k chase when he slipped coming out of the water jump and not only appeared to have broken his ankle but then had his hand spiked by the following runner when he fell. Thanks to the prompt attention of club physio, KYLE ANDREW and his wife LAUREN, who took ANDREW to the A&E Department at the Northern General Hospital, he was eventually diagnosed with badly torn ligaments and had a number of stitches in his hand wound. MO MOHAMED was the next casualty, twisting his ankle whilst warming up for the 1500m and missing the race. Finally, GERALD MATTHEW, after winning the “A” string 200m was running 3rd leg in the 4 x 100m with the team well ahead when he pulled up with a hamstring injury but still managed to hobble the last 10m to hand the baton on to DAN BRAMBLE who brought the team home in 8th place. The team dropped from 3rd to 5th equal but confident that so much bad luck could not strike again and that there will be a much better performance in Round 2 on Saturday 3 June at Lee Valley.

EASTERN YOUNG ATHLETICS LEAGUE – The first match of the season took place in Watford last Sunday.

What an astonishing start to the season with our Young Athletes finishing only 15 points behind last year’s Champions. I believe it would be unfair to single out any Individual, as the turnout and performance was exceptional, which included so many of this Year’s new members.

The next fixture is on 4 June at Luton, where we are up against Basildon, Biggleswade, Havering, Luton, Norwich and Peterborough.

Team Result – 1st Bedford & County (781 points), 2nd SBH (766), 3rd Woodford Green with Essex Ladies (626.5), 4th Watford (622), 5th Braintree (311), 6th Hertford & Ware/Enfield & Haringey (170.5), 7th Biggleswade (167).

WORLD RECORD FOR 2018 VIRGIN MONEY LONDON MARATHON – A record total number of 386,050 applicants from the UK and overseas registered for a ballot place in the 2018 Virgin Money London Marathon when the application system closed on Friday 5 May. This is the highest number of applicants for any marathon in the world.
327,516 of those applicants were from the UK. This is 73,586 up from the previous UK applicant record of 253,930 for the 2017 event – an increase of nearly 29%. A total of 58,534 people applied in the overseas ballot.
Just over 58% of the UK applications for 2018 were from people who have never run a marathon and more than 45% of the total UK applicants were women (also a new record).
“These record-breaking numbers reflect the huge success of the 37th London Marathon on 23 April,” said Hugh Brasher, Event Director for London Marathon Events. “One of our goals is to inspire people to take up sport and it’s fantastic that more than 191,000 people from the UK have been inspired to apply to run a marathon for the first time in 2018.

ATTEMPT AT SUB-2 HOUR MARATHON  At 05:45 local time (04:45 BST) last Saturday, LEILISA DESISA, ZERSENAY TADESE and ELIUD KIPCHOGE stepped on to a famous motor racing track in Italy and attempt to do something that many believe could forever be beyond the scope of human capability.

Their goal has nothing to do with fast cars, however – this will all be about fast feet and the small matter of attempting to run a marathon in under two hours.
It’s undeniable that the odds are currently stacked against success when it comes to this marathon ambition. The hard facts behind what is required to cover 26.2 miles in less than 120 minutes take a while to comprehend.
The current marathon world record stands at 2 hours, 2 minutes and 57 seconds – set by Kenya’s DENNIS KIMETTO at the Berlin Marathon in 2014, his average pace for that run was 4:41 per mile. To run 1:59:59 involves an average pace of approximately 4:35. That would mean an improvement of roughly 2.5 per cent.
Yet Nike were determined to find out if it can be done or, at the very least, how close it is possible to get to the landmark time. They are not the only company to have such an ambition – Adidas have their own designs on being first past this post while there is also the sub2hr project headed by Professor YANNIS PITSILADIS of the University of Brighton and involving KENENISA BEKELE – but the American sportwear giants will be the first to officially have a go. They have used the considerable resources at their disposal to examine every single aspect of what it might take to get the sub-two-hour job done. “The hard facts behind what is required to cover 26.2 miles in less than 120 minutes take a while to comprehend”
There was the recruitment of the athletes they thought best equipped to handle the task at hand. Kenya’s KIPCHOGE, who has a PB of 2:03:05, is also the Olympic champion and arguably the finest marathon runner there has ever been. Ethiopian DESISA is a two-time Boston Marathon winner while Eritrean TADESE is the current world half-marathon record-holder with a time of 58:23.
Their training, nutrition and recovery patterns have been pored over forensically with the aim of squeezing every drop of a performance out of them. The involvement of pacemakers, drafting and energy conservation will play a hugely significant part, too. And then there are the shoes. Many would argue this is the whole reason why Nike got involved in the first place – as a publicity stunt designed to shift more products.
The marathon course at Monza, not far from Milan, is very much out of the ordinary, too. The runners will cover just over 17.5 laps of a 2.4km circuit which has also been designed to maximise speed – the appliance of science is everywhere. And it’s that contrived nature of such an experiment which concerns the more sceptical observers.
“It’s got positive elements and negative elements,” says Athletics Weekly columnist Tim Hutchings, former Olympian and a man immersed in world distance running through his job as an athletics commentator. “I think all top athletes train hard to achieve a permanence in competition and win titles, win medals and break records. “Competition is the unifying element I think of all sport, particularly in athletics and distance racing. When that unifying, element gets compromised by commercial ambition or a third party’s infatuation with an alternative goal, like the sub-2, then it’s quite regrettable.”
Hutchings adds: “The whole thing in Monza is very contrived. This is not a legitimate record attempt for a number of reasons – it’s just a scientific experiment. It’s too plastic, it’s not real.” There is no doubt that going under two hours splits opinion massively. For every sceptic, there is someone absolutely fascinated by this particular pursuit and wondering just where it might lead.

SUB-2 HOUR MARATHON OUTCOME  Showing remarkable strength both in body and mind, ELIUD KIPCHOGE proved on Saturday morning that a sub-two-hour marathon might be a lot closer than some may have originally thought.

Clocking 2:00:25 for 26.2 miles in a controversial ‘Breaking2’ event organised by sportswear giant Nike in an attempt to breach the barrier, the Olympic champion further reinforced his position as arguably the finest marathon runner of all time.
While Kipchoge’s time, set on a Formula One track in Monza in Italy, won’t count as an official world record, it does go some way to further proving what the human body is capable of.

Starting out toward the back of an arrow formation of pacers, KIPCHOGE was joined by world half-marathon record-holder TADESE and two-time Boston Marathon winner DESISA.
Their first 5km split was timed at 14:14 as they aimed for 14:10, but the group picked up the pace soon afterwards and there was a projected finish time of 1:59:56 at that point.
They went through 10km in 28:21, 15km in 42:34 and 20km in 56:49, before the halfway point was reached in 59:57. Not long after this, the attempt relied on KIPCHOGE alone, with DESISA having dropped off the pace just after 15km and TADESE losing touch after 21km.
KIPCHOGE and the pacers remained on track for a sub-two-hour time through 25km in 71:03, and with 85:20 on the clock at 30km the projected finish time was exactly 2:00:00. The 35km mark was passed in 1:39:37 and 40km in 1:54:04.
KIPCHOGE averaged around 4:36 per mile, with around 4:34.5 needed to dip under two hours.
Both TADESE and DESISA battled on to finish, clocking 2:06:51 and 2:14:10 respectively.
