BEN LLOYD TWIN INSPIRATION – The following article was published in Athletics Weekly recently.

WAYDE VAN NIEKERK and ANN GIBSON are two people who do not, it would seem, have a great deal in common.
The former is an athletics megastar from South Africa and the latter an octogenarian from St Albans.
VAN NIEKERK, the Olympic and World champion and World record-holder at 400m, is someone BEN particularly admires. They met – almost – in August. “At London 2017 I stayed behind in the empty stadium and waited by the media area until he came by me,” explains BEN. “I was hoping to get his autograph but got ushered away by security.”
There are no barriers, though, to this lad speaking with MRS GIBSON, as she’s his grandmother. “She comes to everything I do and has been there for me right from the start,” says BEN.
One thing is obvious BEN’S Nana has rightly beamed with pride at his 400m hurdles performances this year. They include him retaining the English Schools title also victories at the England Championships, School Games and SIAB International.
He also ran 52.98, taking him to the top of the UK 2017 rankings for his age-group.
Looking back to earlier years, BEN is keen to mention a PE teacher at his primary school. MISS WESTON, he says was “athletics mad” and got to carry the Olympic torch on his recommendation.
BEN also recalls the summer of 2015. Then, having achieved English Schools qualifying marks for 300m, 800m and triple jump, he won silver in the latter at Gateshead.
That was a prelude to, however, to the London-born athlete switching events. “I eventually decided, after speaking with STAN MADIRI, my coach, I no longer wanted to triple jump. Out of curiosity I tried the 400m hurdles and found myself climbing the rankings. I went from thinking I wouldn’t make the English Schools (in 2016) to believing I could win it.”
Even though BEN faced more experienced hurdlers in the final (again at Gateshead) and his nerves were shredding – ‘I threw up at breakfast”, he says candidly – the then 15 year-old was in his element once the gun fired and went on to an outstanding victory.
This year, in keeping his title, BEN came from behind with 100m to go. “The home straight is my strength and I pulled away after the final hurdle,” he explains.
It is clear BEN analyses his performances deeply, it is equally true his coach does the same. He philosophises, too. “If you win, don’t let it get to your head; if you lose, don’t let it get to you heart,” is one of his theories. “The athlete is the seed and all you can do is give it water and sunlight,” is on of STAN’S nuggets.
BEN can also use flowery, but absolutely correct, language. “Throughout my races,” he muses, “I have to keep a constant level of acuity despite fatigue. I have a task to adhere to and I must execute it.” Acuity – I had to look that word up – means mental sharpness.
BEN meanwhile, hopes Arsenal can show similar ability this season. His home is no more than a mile or so from the Gunners’ famous training ground at London Colney; and he is a fervent fan of the FA Cup holders.

PHILLIPE BROWN – Following last week’s article on PHILLIPE, who was a member back in the 1970’s, RAY POWELL has searched his phenomenal memory regarding the 2 photographs published, and sent me the following.
The first photo is from the Watford open cross country in 1975, not sure if you can make out the Shaftesbury runner behind me, it was PHILIP LLEWELYN, this was the only time that I was ever in front of PHIL in a race. It was short lived as he won the race, DAVE SWEENEY was second and I was third, with PHILLIPE finishing 7th.
The second photo was from the 1976 Barnet Schools cross country champs at Copthall, which I won with DAVE in 2nd place and PHILLIPE in 3rd, this was the one and only time that I beat DAVE in a race, his excuse was that he had a heavy cold.
DAVE, PHILLIPE and myself used to meet at the footbridge to the entrance to Copthall, on a Monday and Wednesday nights running about a mile from our homes in Mill Hill, Hendon and Colindale to the footbridge where we went on to do our training sessions.

POST BOXES – Published in the 12 October Newsletter was an article on RAY POWELL’S post boxes in his home town of Shefford. RAY was interviewed recently on the latest revelations, be warned you may wish to have a box of tissues nearby – https://www.newsflare.com/video/157068/entertainment-arts/royal-mail-repaint-post-boxes-smartened-up-by-decorator
