BRITISH ATHLETICS LEAGUE PREMIERSHIP – The first of four fixtures took place in Sheffield on Saturday 9 May.
In what turned out to be the closest BAL Premiership match on record with just 0.2 of a point separating 3 teams, truly every point counted. However, an excellent team performance which relied on our talented juniors supporting the team effort saw us secure 3rd place. Out of a team size of 25 we had 9 juniors. The sprinters were in very good form and the performances of OJIE EDOBURUN and new member TOMMY RAMDHAN on debut were outstanding with number one GB U20 ranking performances from each of them. Our triple jumpers DANIEL LEWIS and NONSO OKOLO produced a double first, whilst NATHAN FOX, a last minute substitute in the high jump set a new PB 9 years after his previous best. While it is unfair to single out other athletes as they all worked really hard, we must thank GLEN WATTS, for doubling up and ANTHONY WHITEMAN for trebling up !!! Finally, returning to the “every point counts” debate, thanks to the efforts of joint team manager CLYDE GORDON, who as well as driving the team minibus, stepped in at the very last minute to do the shot when we realised we were a man short. His effort secured 1 point which was the difference between 3rd and 5th. We now look forward to the next match on Saturday 6 June at Lee Valley.

UK WOMEN’S ATHLETICS LEAGUE DIVISION 1 – The first match of the UKWAL took place on Sunday 10th May in Derby. The UKWAL team is under new management this year with NICOLE CARA leading the team in their fight to gain promotion to the Premier Division. The May match is always a challenge due to our athletes completing their exams or still being away warm weather training, and while this match was no different that was not a problem for the team that travelled to Derby. The team was made up of SBH athletes old and new, and both younger or more experienced. With a calm atmosphere and solid team spirit, the team rallied and exceeded all expectations. We had wins from SHEREEN CHARLES in the B string 100m, LILY BECKFORD in the A string 400m, AMY CAMPBELL and LUCY SHORT in the 1500m, PHILIPPA LOWE in the A string 400mH, new member VICTORIA DRONSFIELD in the A string High Jump, and LUCY UNDERDOWN in the A string Shot with a PB. JO BLAIR was also piped at the post on her last Javelin throw for second place in a fantastic competition, along with many other athletes with a top 3 finish. With the entire team pulling together and preparing to support the relays, we were unable to ascertain where we were in the team standings due to a relatively new and inexperienced results team and a poor announcing system. An outstanding 4 x 400m relay finished the day with a time of 3:52:8 made up of PHILIPPA LOWE (56.3), PHILIPPA LOWE (59.3), AMY CAMPBELL (60.3) and LILY BECKFORD (56.9). Thank you to each and every athlete who competed and fought for every single point. A second place finish with so many key athletes unavailable will give the team the platform they need to continue their fight for promotion. The next match is on Sunday 7th June, with the majority of the team leaving after the SBH dinner onSaturday 6th June for Bristol. Please can all athletes confirm their availability NOW to Nicole on 0787 564 2534 so that transport can be organised.
