RESULTS
Just to clarify, that the results I publish can be different to those that are shown on the Power of 10. The differences relate to seasons and personal best performances. For example in the recent EYAL results, an athlete in the 200m ran (24.1), and on his profile his season’s best was shown as (23.88) indoors. As the 200m indoors and outdoors are totally different type of events, I had shown the (24.1) as a season’s best.
The Power of 10 publishes separate UK rankings for indoor and outdoor performances.

EASTERN YOUNG ATHLETES LEAGUE – The second of four fixtures took place at Watford on 5 May.
The following results are provisional, although I have added any season or personal best performance from your profile.

Due to an abnormal amount of unavailable athletes, the team rallied to an exceptional win. Our athletes covered numerous events where possible, and as you will see we had many great individual performances.

Our next fixture is on Sunday 2 June at Sandy, in which our next opponents are Bedfordshire Lions, Harlow, City of Norwich, Peterborough & Nene Valley and Stevenage & HAWCS.

Match Result – 1st SBH (638 points), 2nd St Albans (480), 3rd Bedford & County (444), 4th Watford (366), 5th Brentwood (363), 6th Peterborough (0)

Based on the provional results published, we are currently in 3rd place to Chelmsford & Havering. At our next fixture on Sunday 2 June, our best placed opponets are City of Norwich in 6th place and Stevenage & HAWCS are in 10th place.

BANNISTER MILES LIVES UP TO EXPECTATIONS WITH SUB-FOURS GALORE  The following article was published on the Athletics Weekly website recently.

A jubilant OSSAMA MESLEK leads a quartet of milers inside four minutes in Oxford exactly 70 years after ROGER BANNISTER’S famous feat. On an afternoon that saw Iffley Road track in Oxford drenched with relentless rain, the showers finally stopped just in time for the final race of the day at 6pm. The flag on top of the nearby church stopped fluttering in the wind and went limp, just as it had 70 years earlier when ROGER BANNISTER became the first man to break four minutes for the mile. On that occasion – May 6, 1954 – BANNISTER created history with 3:59.4. This Monday, though, four men smashed through the barrier on a day of joyous anniversary celebrations. OSSAMA MESLEK led the charge in glorious style with (3:56.15) followed by JAMES YOUNG with (3:57.71), TIARNAN CRORKEN in (3:58.85) and MAX WHARTON with (3:59.19). The Italian international, who runs for Leeds City, even had the luxury of celebrating during his final strides as a crowd of around 2000 roared its approval. Moments earlier – and 70 years after DIANE LEATHER had become the world’s first female sub-five-minute miler – KHAI MHLANGA ran (4:36.09) to hold off BETHAN MORLEY and LAUREN CHURCH in the women’s mile.

“Going sub-four here is pretty special,” said MESLEK k. “As I’m racing at the Diamond League in Doha in a few days’ time, it felt perfect to come here. The conditions didn’t seem great but it was perfectly still in the end. I tried to wind it up toward the end and everything went to plan.” Among the crowd was current world mile record-holder HICHAM EL GUERROUJ of Morocco, British record-holder STEVE CRAM and former mile record-holders FILBERT BAYI of Tanzania and NOUREDDINE MORCELI of Algeria, plus Irish miling legend EAMONN COGHLAN. After being swamped by autograph hunters and selfie seekers all day, the supermilers turned their attentions to watch the main race of the day – and it didn’t disappoint.

The BANNISTER family were also in attendance with their father, who died in 2018, no doubt casting a nod of approval from the heavens. “I think he would have been very proud of what happened today,” said one of his sons, THURSTAN BANNISTER. EL GUERROUJ, whose mile record of (3:43.13) has stood since 1999, was determined to visit Oxford for the anniversary celebrations despite visa problems and he said: “I wanted to be here to celebrate the whole legacy that our spiritual father left behind. “I had the privilege to meet ROGER BANNISTER at Crystal Palace and I was excited because he was such a great inspiration to me and many athletes who know the history of the sport.”

MORCELI an Olympic and three-time world 1500m champion in addition to being a (3:44.39) miler, added: “ROGER was a wonderful person. His spirit will live on as long as we live and will be an inspiration for many generations. I was inspired by him because nobody thought someone would break four minutes but he opened the door for us. He made us believe in ourselves and that there is no limit to our performance.” COGHLAN, the first man to run a sub-3:50 mile indoors and, later, a sub-four-minute mile as an M40, said: “I was only a year old when Sir ROGER ran a world record for the mile. I remember watching it at the cinema as a child. When I took up athletics I dreamed of running for Ireland, going to the Olympics and running a sub-four-minute mile, so to achieve all this after watching him as a child and then being here as part of that whole tradition is unbelievable.”

The day was as much of an “occasion” as a track meeting. It began with community mile runs in the centre of Oxford at 9am with CRAM and EL GUERROUJ rolling back the years and rubbing shoulders with fun runners and youngsters. The track races during the afternoon were superbly staged in difficult conditions by Oxford University students and the British Milers Club with spectators able to browse around a magnificent Museum of World Athletics display as they took refuge from the rain. Later, a number of guests enjoyed an evening of fine dining and nostalgia at Exeter College as the BANNISTER family paid an emotional and heartfelt tribute to their father’s exploits, not just in athletics but in neurology and sports administration.

There were even world bests recorded in the new steeplechase mile with WILL BATTERSHILL running (4:25.81) in the men’s race despite being frustratingly held in the rain at the start with his fellow runners for several minutes as officials made sure the barriers were fixed in the right positions. “The mile is hard enough anyway so if you add barriers then it’s a tough event,” said BATTERSHILL on this new event. “It felt like a sprint and you haven’t got time to lose focus as the last lap comes around quickly. It hurt a lot too!” Despite the damp conditions, athletes of all ages excelled. The masterful CLARE ELMS smashed the British W60 mile record by eight seconds with (5:30.88) in the women’s C race, which means she now owns 10 national age group records in the mile from the W45 through to W60 categories on the road and track.

Only 14, JORJIA MARCH of Barnet & District AC was a convincing winner of the under-15 girls’ mile in (4:57.00), while MADISON KINDLER of Brentwood Beagles ran (5:03.85) for a big win in the under-13 girls’ race. The men’s B race also saw some fine running with BEN REYNOLDS taking a narrow win in (4:06.32) from under-20 runner WILLIAM RABJOHNS as EVAN GRIME, only 15, clocked (4:11.59) in ninth. In comparison, BANNISTER clocked just (4:24.6) aged 18, albeit on a cinder track with heavy leather spikes, before eventually breaking the four-minute barrier seven years later. Monday was also an opportunity for plenty of Oxford students, past and present, to put on their racing spikes. These included former Oxford student SIMON MUGGLESTONE, the 1987 European junior 5000m champion and 3:58 miler, who didn’t run a step for 30 years following Achilles surgery but made a comeback a couple of years ago and now, as an M55 runner, clocked (5:09.99) just 24 hours after racing 10km at the Great Birmingham Run. BRITISH RELAY RUNNERS QUALIFY FOR PARIS EN MASSE IN THE BAHAMAS  The following article was published on the Athletics Weekly website recently.

Four of the five GB teams at the World Athletics Relays on Saturday secured their places at this summer’s Olympics with all the teams having a further chance on Sunday. British relay teams enjoyed an almost perfect night when it came to qualifying for the Olympics as four out of their five teams secured places at the Paris Games thanks to good results at the World Relays in The Bahamas.

The men’s and women’s 4x100m and 4x400m teams all earned qualification for Paris with only the mixed relay team missing out, although they will have a further chance during the second day of the action on Sunday (May 5) in Nassau.

Olympic hosts France and the United States also qualified four teams for Paris at the end of the first day. On Sunday the leading teams will compete for prize money and Olympic lane seeding positions at this summer’s Games, whereas all other teams will race in the additional round where the top two teams in each of the heats will also qualify for Olympics. The mixed relay on Saturday saw the event record broken multiple times with the United States emerging as quickest with (3:11.52). Led by FEMKE BOL, the Netherlands were the second quickest on the night with (3:12.16) whereas Ireland clocked a national record of (3:12.50) with CILLIN GREENE, RHASIDAT ADEKELE, THOMAS BARR and SHARLENE MAWDSLEY excelling. In the same heat as Ireland, the GB team of BRODIE YOUNG, AMA PIPI, CHARLIE DOBSON and LAVIA NIELSEN were third in (3:13.52) with DOBSON running a reported (43.63) split. NIELSEN said: “This is a lot of our season openers. It’s really hard to judge your pace and your race plan. We’ll watch it back and have a good debrief with MARTYN ROONEY our coach and try to do much better than that.”

The women’s 4x100m saw the United States lead the way with (42.21) but the GB team of ASHA PHILIP, IMANI LANSIQUOT, BIANCA WILLIAMS and AMY HUNT won their heat with the second fastest time overall of (42.33). “That was incredible it was my first time with these three girls,” said HUNT, “and they’ve been so absolutely amazing in trusting me and mentoring me and making sure I am on it!”

Anchored by world 100m, 200m and 4x100m champion NOAH LYLES, the United States were quickest in the men’s 4x100m too with (37.49) as they comfortably beat Olympic champions Italy in their heat. Britain – with EUGENE AMO-DADZIE, ZHARNEL HUGHES, RICHARD KILTY and NETHANE MITCHELL-BLAKE – were seventh quickest overall but crucially runner-up in their heat to France in (38.36). “For years I was sat on my sofa watching GB teams smash it in the relay,” said AMO-DADZIE, “it was always one of those things I would think ‘oh wow how amazing that would be’ and now I am in the situation where I have helped GB get to that stage.”

Ireland led the way in the women’s 4x400m as they continued their great (and busy) night. Their quartet of PHIL HEALY, MAWDSLEY, SOPHIE BECKER and ADELEKE (with 49.48) clocked (3:24.38) as the United States had the second best time overall with (3:24.76) and Great Britain next best with (3:24.89) as they finished runners up to Ireland in their heat with HANNAH KELLY, VICTORIA OHURUGU, NICOLE YEARGIN and LINA NIELSEN on duty.

There was a shock in the men’s 4x400m as the United States were disqualified for moving out of the assigned order at one of the changeovers, although they will have a second attempt at qualification for Paris on Sunday. It meant a Botswana quartet that included LETSILE TEBOGO (with a 43.49 split) and ISAAC MAKWALA were fastest overall with (2:59.73) followed by a South African team with world record-holder WAYDE VAN NIEKERK clocking (2:59.76). The British team of MATT HUDSON-SMITH, TOBY HARRIES, LEE THOMPSON and LEWIS DAVEY were second in their heat behind Italy with (3:02.10).

ATHLETES SET FOR THE INAUGURAL PICKERING MEMORIAL THROWS INTERNATIONAL  The following article was published on the Athletics Weekly website recently.

Hammer thrower CHARLOTTE PAYNE is among the entries for an event that is being staged one year after SHAUN PICKERING died and which aims to raise funds for the RON PICKERING Memorial Fund. Looking for bank holiday plans for the end of this month? Look no further. The inaugural PICKERING Memorial Throws International is coming to Loughborough University on Monday May 27, writes NICK RIDGEON. Partnering with some fantastic charities and brands, this exclusive throws-only event will be the most inclusive pathway competition, incorporating able-bodied and para-events across the different disciplines. Celebrating the lives and contributions of the PICKERING family, we can’t wait to give throwers the perfect opportunity to throw far, nurture new talent and showcase British throwing at its best.

Featuring teams from England and all across Europe, the standard of this competition will be nothing short of impressive, with athletes vying for those all-important qualification distances to secure their spots on the European, world under-20 and Olympic teams this summer. England team captain CHARLOTTE PAYNE shared her excitement for the event not only in terms of competition, but also as it is supporting a cause close to her heart as a recipient of a RON PICKERING Memorial Fund grant: “The PICKERING Memorial Throws International is the perfect way to honour the legacy of SHAUN PICKERING who was an incredible champion of athletics. He contributed so much to the athletes and coaches in our sport, and we are so grateful for the time and effort he invested in us. “We have such a talented crop of young throwers in the UK, and I can’t wait to witness some future champions in action not only from the UK but from all across Europe, all celebrating the amazing work of the PICKERING family.” Joining PAYNE on the line-up so far will be Swiss javelin and shot specialist SABRINA BOSS and Italian discus and shot specialist PIETRO DAL SOGLIO, to name just two.

Throws coach GARRY POWER will be heading up the England team and says: “The PICKERING Memorial Throws International is going to be a fantastic celebration of throws. We are throwers, throwing a party! Come and see our excellent young throwers striving for personal bests and qualification distances in high quality competition from athletes across Europe.” As well as claiming top spot on the podium, athletes will be battling for prizes that range from free accommodation on a warm weather training camp to £500 from the RON PICKERING Memorial Fund and free Shokz headphones.

Tickets are £6 with all of the ticket sales split between the RPMF and the Personal Best Foundation.

MY GREATEST RACE: BRENDAN FOSTER  The following article was published on the Athletics Weekly website recently. Photograph taken by MARK SHEARMAN.

On home turf, the European champion vowed to christen the revamped Gateshead Stadium with a world record bid.Gateshead Meeting, Gateshead,  August 3, 1974 – 3000m, first place,(7:35.2) world record.

In 1972, I ran the 1500m in the Olympics and was fifth. I thought: “That’s as good as I’m going to get,” so I stepped up to the 5000m. I ran two miles at Crystal Palace in 1973 and broke the world record but then, in the autumn of that year, Gateshead Council decided that, with money in the budget following local government reorganisation, they would build a proper track at the stadium instead of the ash track which we’d had for years. They held a reception for my two miles record and I’d had a couple of drinks. I did a reply saying thanks very much indeed and I then said: “I promise you, if you put the track in, I’ll come back and organise an event and break a world record.” Of course, it was reported in the press and everything locally. Eventually, summer came around and I thought: “I’m going to have to do it.” People started referring to it and it became a big deal.

The Commonwealth Games was in January 1974 and I finished second in the 5000m, breaking the British record for that distance and also in the 1500m. I was obviously running really well and the world record was a logical step. I thought: “Let’s go for the 3000m,” which was EMIEL PUTTEMANS’ record. It was a bloody good record of (7:37.6). It’d been (7:39) before that. When I started studying it, I realised I needed to run 61 seconds for seven-and-a-half laps, which is quite a tall order. Luckily, I was in good shape. The track was laid about 10 days beforehand. Before they put the lines on it, I ran on it and thought: “This is really good.” It probably felt like these new running shoes. It was nice and bouncy, it looked good and it felt good. For the meeting that we organised, we’d sold all the tickets. It was absolutely packed with 10,000-12,000 people so it was all turning into a big event. ITV decided they wanted to televise it.

Maybe nowadays, making a promise that you were going to get a world record would feel a bit risky and a bit stupid, unnecessarily aggressive or loud. This was different. It was just matter of fact. It didn’t feel as though, if it didn’t happen, it would be a big deal. Now, if I’d said I was going to do it, and I didn’t manage it, I would be battered on social media. I’d trained in Leeds with MIKE BAXTER, an international who’d run at the Commonwealth Games and the European Championships for Great Britain in the 5000m. When I told him I was going to go for this record, he said he’d run the first mile for me. He took me around in about (3:47) for 1500m and then I had to do the rest myself, because we didn’t have pacemakers in those days. They weren’t really allowed, so he had to keep going with it and run the whole race. The crowd was mental. The minute I stepped on the track, they were cheering and, as the race went on, you could feel it. Coming into the finishing straight, there were so many people on the trackside and they were almost invading the track at the finish. It was the first major event at Gateshead but it wasn’t a new stadium. It was an old wooden stadium, everyone was stomping on the floor and you could hear it. It was a raucous occasion and a great one. The leader of Gateshead Council often tells me he was there when that happened. He was only 15 years of age but still remembers it to this day. Lots of people came. In fact, I’ve probably met 100,000 people who said they were there to see it! And that was a springboard for the halcyon days of athletics in Gateshead.

A few weeks later I won the European title as well. When I lined up in Rome, I was running against the greatest distance runner of all time in LASSE VIREN. But, after Gateshead, I knew I was in great shape. I knew I could beat him. I just had to perform in Rome but I had the confidence that came from running faster than he’d ever run before. It was his two miles world record I’d broken the year before so I knew he couldn’t run any faster than me.

In the final in Rome, I broke away and he came with me. There was a short period when he was literally on my shoulder and I was thinking: “Right, just go faster, just go faster, just go faster,” which I did and eventually broke him, and he dropped back. The confidence came from breaking that 3000m record because at the time it was considered one of the top marks. In fact, it was only in recent years that the stadium record was broken at Gateshead, so it was a good record. It was a good performance.
