CHARLIE DOBSON EARNS 400M SILVER MEDAL  The following article was published on the Athletics Weekly website recently.

Belgian sprinter beats Brit in brilliant one-lap battle as Iwan Thomas’s European Championship record falls in Rome on Monday. ALEXANDER DOOM has been nothing short of a sensation in 2024. After upsetting KARSTEN WARHOLM to win the world indoor 400m title in Glasgow in March, the 27-year-old from Belgium has improved his outdoor PB this year from (44.92) to (44.15). This latest time came in a thrilling European final where he was pushed all the way by another revelation, CHARLIE DOBSON, as the 24-year-old clocked (44.38) to go No.5 on the UK all-time rankings. The pair also took down IWAN THOMAS’ championships record of (44.52) from Budapest in 1998. MATT HUDSON-SMITH, the defending champion and European record-holder with (44.07) from Oslo last month, was missing from this event after withdrawing on the eve of the championships. He is the only European to ever run faster than DOOM, too. His absence didn’t detract from the race, though, as DOOM and DOBSON locked horns, with the young Briton drawn one lane inside the Belgian.
DOOM held a slight lead into the home straight and managed to maintain it, drawing away a little in the final metres as he demonstrated his strength. It was hardly a case of DOOM and gloom for the runner-up, though, as DOBSON was delighted with his silver medal and PB. His season is just getting going, too. “I’m way over the moon, it’s amazing,” said DOBSON. “This is far more than I expected this season. I’d have been happy with one sub-45 qualifier for the Olympic standard and then to go to the trials. So this is unreal.” DOOM, who was running with tape on his midriff due to a minor injury in his psoas, said: “CHARLIE is in great shape and is a very fast 200m runner whereas I’m not so fast in the first 200m but my last 100m is strong.”
In this form, DOOM will be an Olympic medal contender in Paris. DOBSON won’t be far away either although he expressed a desire on Monday to switch back to 200m in coming seasons. “But I’ll be staying with 400m this summer,” he confirmed.

RESULTS
Just to clarify, that the results I publish can be different to those that are shown on the Power of 10. The differences relate to seasons and personal best performances. For example in the recent EYAL results, an athlete in the 200m ran (24.1), and on his profile his season’s best was shown as (23.88) indoors. As the 200m indoors and outdoors are totally different type of events, I had shown the (24.1) as a season’s best.
The Power of 10 publishes separate UK rankings for indoor and outdoor performances.

EASTERN YOUNG ATHLETES LEAGUE – The third of four fixtures took place at Sandy on 2 June.
Apologies but the provisional results have just been published, and are far from correct. Thefore I will publish the full results in next week’s Newsletter.

Match Result – 1st SBH (671 points), 2nd Norwich (612), 3rd Stevenage and HAWCS (579), 4th Bedford Lions (268), 5th Harlow (179)

Our next fixture is on Sunday 21 July at StoneX Stadium, in which our next opponents are Cambridge and Coleridge, Ipswich, Orion and Ilford, SS Athletics and Enfield and Haringey and Thurrock.

Based on the provisional results for the 2 June fixtures published, we are currently in 3rd place with 1986 points, to Chelmsford 2197 points and Havering 2093 points. At our next fixture on Sunday 21 July, our best placed opponents are Ipswich 1598 points, Cambridge and Coleridge 1528 points and Thurrock 1495 points.

CHARLIE DOBSON ON WHY HE’S CHOSEN TO FOCUS ON 400M  The following article was published on the Athletics Weekly website recently.

CHARLIE DOBSON is relishing the opportunity to race over 400m for the first time at a senior major championships. The 24-year-old has so far represented Great Britain on the international stage in both the 200m and 4x400m but the European Championships in Rome represents a chance for him to take his career to another level.

Two years ago, at the last edition in Munich, DOBSON finished fourth in the 200m. He was also part of the men’s 4x400m squad that claimed gold. Then, at the World Championships in Budapest, the Brit ran the second leg in the relay, with Great Britain taking bronze.

Now, it’s all about being on the podium in the individual 400m. DOBSON comes into the championships in some form. He ran a personal best of (44.46) over the distance in Savona (May 15), which was even more impressive given he had to navigate a few puddles in his lane. “Yeah, I’m very excited,” DOBSON says. “It’s going to be my first championships doing the individual 400m. It surprised me to run (44.46) [in Savona]. I don’t think I shocked that many people but I did myself! “To be honest, going into that race, I went in, not blind as such, but I didn’t know what I’d be able to do. You get a gauge of how you are from training but it’s never the same. “The way I set the race up was getting to 200m, seeing it go quite well and then push round the top bend. I came off the bend, carried on and finished a lot stronger than I’ve ever done before. That made a difference.”

With that run, the Brit is now the third fastest European athlete over 400m this season, only behind MATT HUDSON-SMITH and ALEXANDER DOOM. After breaking his own European 400m record of (44.26), with a stunning (44.07) at the Oslo Diamond League, HUDSON-SMITH decided to withdraw from Rome to focus on the Olympics. That now leaves the door open for a battle between DOBSON and DOOM at the Europeans, with the latter having a season’s best of 44.44. DOBSON, who was also on the same World Relays team as HUDSON-SMITH in the Bahamas – securing Olympic qualification in the men’s 4x400m – is unsurprisingly full of praise for his compatriot.

“He’s had a resurgence over the past couple of years and it’s really good to see,” DOBSON adds. “It’s put British 400m running back on the map and that’s inspired the rest of us to push on and work harder. We want to be the best we can. It’s a big gap to close and it’s a lot harder! “The Bahamas was pretty fun. It was the World Relays but in the way that it was set up, it made everyone feel really relaxed which was good.” DOBSON also states that Iwan Thomas has also been a huge source of inspiration and one of the main reasons behind his permanent move to the 400m. In an interview with AW two years ago, THOMAS said that if DOBSON stepped up from the 200m to 400m then “he could run very fast” and “it [400m] is all his if he wants.” Dobson reveals that he chats to the former UK 400m record-holder “now and again” for “general advice.” After missing the Tokyo Olympics through an injury that left him on crutches, DOBSON now dreams of Paris but the first step is to lay down a marker in Rome.

“Missing Tokyo was tough,” DOBSON says. “I remember sitting in a rehab centre in Bisham Abbey and watching the men’s 4x400m relay. It definitely meant I could use that as fuel for my rehab and getting back from the injury. “I think that rehab went well and it’s clearly had a positive knock-on effect now. We’ve changed a few things so my body is paced a bit more this year which is nice.” DOBSON doesn’t just have a passion for running though. Last year, the Brit graduated from Loughborough University with a first-class degree in aeronautical engineering, a course he spent five years on. His dissertation was on the finite element analysis of a gas turbine engine. Can DOBSON, also known as the ‘ginger ninja’, blast his way to European 400m glory? The ultimate goal for the Brit is to win an Olympic or world 400m medal. If he performs well in Rome, you wouldn’t put any limits on his career.

On seeking technical advice “MailChimp” was recommended as the best way for SBH to go forward. There is one thing you should be aware off is that when you receive an email from me, the footer at the bottom has 4 options, of which one is “Unsubscribe Me From List”. Could I ask you not to select this as if you do you will be automatically removed from my distribution list.
