DID YOU KNOW? – Shaftesbury athletes have excelled in the sport of Bobsleighing, read on.
STUART BENSON currently a member of Shaftesbury from Troon in Ayrshire. Has competed in the British Athletic League, also won the Scottish Senior Indoor Championships in 2011. His personal bests are 60m 6.81, 100m 10.49 and 200m 21.40.
Stuart is now established in the GB 4 Man Bobsleigh team, and has won Silver Medals in the World Cup and European Championships in December 2013 and January 2014. At 6ft 5ins Stuart is not only the tallest of the crew of John Jackson, Bruce Tasker and Joel Fearon but also the biggest on the entire British team and they sought the very best to ensure that his frame gives them a distinct advantage in the recent Winter Olympics in Sochi. In Sochi the team went from strength to strength, after the first 2 runs they were in 7th place, then moved up to 6th place after the 3rd run, the final run was their fastest time enabling them to finish in 5th place, only 11 hundredths of a second from a Bronze Medal.
COURTNEY RUMBOLT joined Shaftesbury as a Junior in 1988 and in June of that year finished 2nd in the AAA U20 Championships, his personal best was set in 1990 running 10.48 in the AAA Championships. Prior to joining us he had won a bronze medal in the 4×100 m relay at the 1988 World Junior Championship. After failing to gain a place at the Barcelona Olympics he made the move to the world of bobsleigh but missed out on selection for the 1994 Winter Games.
Courtney was a member of Mark Tout’s British number one crew up until Tout was banned following a positive doping test in 1996 and kept his place when Sean Olsson took over as pilot. The team’s bronze medal in 1998 was the first bobsleigh medal for Great Britain since 1964, and were only 5 hundredths of a second behind the Silver Medal Switzerland 1 bobsleigh.
KEITH POWER –Competed for Shaftesbury from 1978 to 1987 from the Young Athletes League to the British Athletic League. He was an England Schools and GB Junior International Hammer thrower, but also competed in many British Athletic League events for the club including the 4 x100 relay on occasions. He was part of the U20 team that won the European Clubs Championships in 1984.
Keith turned to bobsleighing from 1985 to 1988, and competed mainly in the 4 man bob with Nick Phipps, Alan Cearns and Bob Thorne. On the World Cup circuit they were triple Silver Medallists. Keith was the National Team Coach for GB Bobsleigh 1989 -1994, coaching at two Olympic Games. He is the youngest person ever to be Head Coach at an Olympic Games summer or winter
GUS MCKENZIE – Represented Scottish athletics from schoolboy, through all age groups to Senior level competing in a number of different events (Senior British Decathlete and Long jumper and high hurdles), finally representing Scotland at the 1974 Commonwealth Games in Christchurch, New Zealand 1974 in the 4×100 m relay.
Representing GB in junior and senior age groups in numerous events, and his most memorable achievements was winning a European Junior Bronze Medal in the 110m Hurdles. Gus was the first British athlete to clear the 7 foot barrier (2.14m) in the high jump. Injury put a stop to sprinting (10.4 100m) and started rehab by training with a friend who at the time was bobsleighing. Went on to represent GB in numerous events and went to Sarajevo Olympics in 1984 as brakeman for the 4 man bobsleigh team. Team members – Malcolm Lloyd, Howard Smith and Peter Brugnani (ex-Haringey ). They were the GBR2 team and finished in 15th place, and in fact beat GBR1 bob.
