LONDON MARATHON – JOYCE SMITH, DICK BEARDSLEY and INGE SIMONSON are to officially start the 35th anniversary race this Sunday. Three and a half decades after winning the first ever London Marathon on March 29, 1981, Dick Beardsley, Inge Simonsen and Joyce Smith will return to London to send some 36,000 Virgin Money London Marathon participants on their 26.2-mile journey to Westminster.

USA’s Beardsley and Norway’s Simonsen famously crossed the rain-swept 1981 finish line hand-in-hand, a gesture which has come to symbolise the spirit of the event and will be celebrated this year. Neither had won a marathon before and the winning time of 2:11:48 was a personal best for both.

Eighteen minutes later and Joyce won the first women’s race by a huge nine-minute margin. Clocking 2:29:57 she became the first British woman and the first woman over 40 to complete the distance in less than two and a half hours.

The three victors were followed across the finish line, then on Constitution Hill, by 6252 other runners.

All three inaugural champions went on to enjoy further success. Smith returned to win the event again a year later, this time by five and a half minutes in 2:29:43 for another British record. At 44 years and 195 days she remains the oldest woman to have ever won the event.

Simonsen went on to run the New York City Marathon later on in 1981 and was sixth in the Golden Marathon in Athens in 1982, while Beardsley continued to set personal bests – acquiring a successive string of 13 marathon PBs in all – a Guinness World Record that still stands. At the 1982 Boston Marathon he was involved in a famous ‘duel in the sun’ with Alberto Salazar, which he lost by a mere two seconds in 2:08:53, as both men bettered the previous course record and US record.

LONDON MARATHON – Many of you will be competing this Sunday for the first time, or aiming to run a personal best. If you are running could you email what your running number is, as this will assist me in finding your finishing time and position.

ORLANDO EDWARDS ON THE MOVE – Orlando has recently changed jobs, and has now moved to Wuhan in China. The following link describes his initial period in Chinahttp://team.inov-8.com/hill-reps-great-wall-of-china/

UK YOUTH DEVELOPMENT LEAGUE SOUTHERN PREMIER 1

First of 4 fixtures took place in Stevenage on 18.4.15

The first match is always tough and this was no exception. It soon developed into 2 matches with the top 3, Windsor, Blackheath and SBH getting well away from the bottom 3, Enfield, Norwich and Stevenage.

We started off well with a double first in the U20 mens HT from FELLAN MCGUIGAN and JAMES HAMBLIN and a fine PB from BILLY PRAIM-SINGH for 3rd place in U17 mens HT in a competition dominated by the top 2 U17 men in the country. BECKY KEATING maintained our reputation in the HT with a win in the U20 women’s event. A double first from KHALID-ALI AHMED in the “B” U20 800m and 1500m marked the SBH dominance in the middle distance events with BEN ROCHFORD, HAMZA KADIR, ADAM SHIRET, ELLIOT DEE, TOM FULTON, JEREMY DEMSEY, RUFUS KENT, GEORGE GROOM and SAM GRIFFITHS picking up 9 individual wins, two 2nds and a 3rd between them out of 12 races. The U20 jumps were weakened by a first round LJ injury to ADE ADEFOLALU and a first round injury in the TJ to BOLU COKER.

Women’s PV has so often been a poor area for us in the past has become a real powerhouse with all 3 athletes coming from the ELLIE SPAIN training group. There was a convincing PB win from U17 ISABEL DEACON and another PB from U20 IONA THEOBALD and a win for MEGAN MCINNES in the U20 “B” event. EAVION RICHARDSON had impressive performances in both the 100m and the U20 LJ as did new member LILY BECKFORD with a massive new PB in the U20 200m and a fine final leg in the 4x400m relay to bring the team home in 2nd place.

The whole squad worked really hard to cover the gaps in the team but of particular note was DYLAN CARLSSON-SMITH who showed his multi-event skills by taking on 4 events (SP, JT, DT and 110m H) and achieving PBs in all of them. New members DOMINIC ASHWELL in the U17 100m and CHENNA OKOH in the U17 400m had clear wins as did our middle distance foursome in the U17 men’s 4x400m and an equally impressive victory from the U20 men’s 4x400m team rounded off a successful day. The team will have to improve in Round 2 on Saturday 16 May at Lee Valley to qualify for the top 2 automatic qualification spots for the September final.

LONDON INTER-CLUB CHALLENGE (INC LONDON COLLEGE SERIES)

The first of four fixtures took place at Lee Valley on 19 April.

The innovative combination of the LICC and London Colleges events saw over 250 athletes compete producing over 450 performances at Lee Valley. A competitive afternoon’s athletics where the highlights included early season ranking leader in the javelin, Jo Blair (SBH) beating Portuguese Olympian Silvia Cruz (WGEL) with a SB of 49.99. Among several international multi-eventers competing, including British number 1 Ashley Bryant (WSEH), David Hall (Dartford) set multiple personal bests (100m, DT). Other notable performances included Michael Painter (Norwich) 63.02 HT PB, and Amy Holder (WSEH) backing up her 51.89 PB discus from the previous day with 47.64.

LICC Founder Geoff Morphitis (SBH) was very enthusiastic with the outcome, “Working in partnership with the London Colleges was a great success for both organisations but most of all for the athletes. I spoke to many of the students present for whom this was their first experience of “Track & Field” athletics since their schooldays. The whole concept of providing good standard competition appealed to them. Our thanks go to England Athletics, UKA and London Marathon for their ongoing support for this London initiative. It was also good to see Tony Shiret, National Council Chairman and EA board member, getting involved with grass roots athletics by taking on the responsibilities of the Assistant Starter. We will continue talking to the London Colleges to see how this co-operation can develop further in the future”
