RICHARD GOODMAN WINS TEAM SILVER MEDAL – Congratulations to RICHARD who in the European Cross Country Championships in Hyeres, France, won a Under 23 team Silver Medal. The GB team finished with 41 points, only 2 points behind the winners Spain. RICHARD in fact finished an excellent 11th place (23.53), with his GB team mate Jonathan Davies taking the Gold Medal (23.32), also Mark Scott was 4th (23.39).

KYLE LANGFORD TOPS POLL – Congratulations to KYLE who was voted British Junior Male in the Athletics Weekly readers’ poll, and received 34.8% of the votes. He also finished in 5th place in the British Breakthrough category, to DINA ASHER-SMITH. Congratulations also to ANTHONY WHITEMAN who finished runner-up to the hot favourite JO PAVEY in the British Veteran category.
GEORGE EVANS – Congratulations to GEORGE and his coach COLIN MCCULLOCH who have now been added to the National Academy.
Scottish Athletics convened recently with the intent to widen its key development programme, which will now be titled the ‘National Academy’. The objective is to develop the potential of young athletes to compete in the the Commonwealth Games in 2018 and beyond.
BOXING DAY RUN – Takes place from the Clubhouse in Allianz Park on Saturday 26 December. A run for all the family to run off the Christmas dinner, and Bryan is confident we may have near to 100 participants. Fancy dress is optional also family pets will be welcome. The race starts at 11.00am, and will cover a distance of 2 miles, 1mile for under 11s.
Entry fee £1 – Prizes, Raffle and Refreshments (donations to the raffle welcome).
ROAD RELAY 2016 AMMENDMENT – I was not aware that the date for the Southern Men’s/Women’s Road Relays at Milton Keynes has changed. It is now on Sunday 20 March. And not Sunday 2 April, which I published on the 11 December email, can you please amend your copy to the correct date please.
NORTH WEST LONDON LEAGUE – The third fixture of five took place on Saturday 12 December at Finsbury Park. On an overcast day the conditions underfoot were a mixture of good and muddy. This fixture took the place of the cancelled 24 October fixture, and unfortunately this week-end was also the Southern Inter Counties at Biggleswade. Which meant that a majority of our Boys were competing for Hertfordshire at Bigglswade.
Our Girls dominated the day with wins from SYDNEY ALLEN (U13) and JOSEPHINE CHADWICK (U15), SARAH BUTLER (U15) in her first race for Shaftesbury started steadily, and in the second half of the race came through the field to finish 3rd, AIMI WEIGHTMAN (U11) again has a consistent race finishing 4th. In the Boys races SAMUEL GREENSTEIN U11 finished 2nd after winning the first two races, and his brothers DANIEL (U15) and OLIVER (U17) both finished 8th. The Under 15 Girls made it 3 team wins this season, the Under 11 Girls finished 2nd, with the Under 13 Girls and Under 17 Men both finishing 4th

Women 40 To 49 – JO KENT (2nd Claim) won the Gold Medal (23.40), 46 runners finished.
Men 40 To 49 – GARETH EDWARDS 49th (39.56), 81 runners finished, the winner was Chris Greenwood of Kent AC (32.12).
Men 50 To 59 – RAY POWELL 89th (52.21), 97 runners finished, the winner was Ben Reynolds of Thames, Hare & Hounds (33.58).
Men 60 To 69 – ROBERT PICK 22nd (45.14), RUSSELL DEVITT 38th (8th Over 65 52.33), 41 runners finished, the winner was Austin Soane of Aldershot, Farnham & District (39.07).
SOUTHERN INTER COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIPS – Took place in Biggleswade on Saturday 12 December. A very good turnout of Shaftesbury runners, with pride of place going to JAMIE HARPER who won the Under 15 boys Silver Medal, and the Hertfordshire team including JAMIE HARPER, THOMAS PATRICK and JOE CHOTT won the team Bronze Medals. GABRIELLA KYRIACOU consistent season carried on and finished 4th in the Under 17 Women’s race. In the Under 17 Men’s race JEREMY DEMPSEY finished 9th.
All athletes were competing for Hertfordshire, unless stated.
Under 13 Girls – 37 runners finished, the winner was Saffron Moore of Hampshire (10.32). Team result 1st Kent (22 points), 2nd Hampshire (48 points), 3rd Suffolk (49 points), 12th Hertfordshire (251 points).
Under 13 Boys – LUCA STUBBS 35th (10.23), 91 runners finished, the winner was Harley Norman of Surrey (9.26). Team result 1st Surrey (16 points), 2nd Kent (37 points), 3rd Essex (60 points), 10th Hertfordshire (186 points).

Under 17 Men – JEREMY DEMPSEY 9th (15.28), HAMZA KADIR (Middlesex) 49th (16.41), 80 runners finished, the winner was Alasdair Kinloch of Kent (14.59). Team result 1st Kent (23 points), 2nd Cambridgeshire (44 points), 3rd Buckinghamshire (74 points), 6th Middlesex (97 points), 10th Hertfordshire (160 points).
Under 20 Women – CHARLOTTE JOHNSTON 25th (24.57), 46 runners finished, the winner was Niamh Bridsonhubbard of Kent (21.50). Team result 1st Middlesex (43 points), 2nd Sussex (64 points), 3rd Essex (69 points), 6th Hertfordshire (103 points).
Senior Women – 62 runners finished, the winner was Svenja Abel of Middlesex (21.36). Team result 1st Surrey (38 points), 2nd Sussex (60 points), 3rd Essex (61 points).
WARM WEATHER TRAINING for the last couple of years, a group of SBH members have enjoyed a short break in Cyprus during the Easter school holidays for some top quality warm weather training. The trip is organised by the parents of one of our members on a not for profit basis. CLYDE GORDON will be leading the squad ably supported by a number of leading coaches from Cyprus provided by their governing body. A detailed handout is attached, so we advise interested parties to get in touch with the organiser as soon as possible for further information and to benefit from the cheaper flights available before Christmas.
VOLUNTEERS REQUIRED IN 2016 – I know Christmas is not quite upon us yet, but Ray and Clare Powell are sending you an early Christmas present.
Ray and Clare took on the role this year of organising volunteers for the 4 races, and your support was superb. We are proud to be involved in these races for many years, and the financial support the club receives is most welcome.
2016 races are – London Mini Marathon 24 April, Westminster Mile 29 May, (Bupa) 10k 30 May (This will be a different sponsor this year, bat at the moment name unknown), Standard Chartered Great City Race 7 July.

THE RENOVATION WORKS AT THE SHAFTESBURY BARNET HARRIERS CLUB HOUSE ARE COMPLETE – Middlesex University have agreed to buy some new weights equipment and are due to be delivered and fitted this week. Middlesex University have arranged for an induction course for all our coaches and elite athletes who are planning to use the new facility for next Monday. We have now received the programmed KEY FOBS which can be used at designated times on all 3 doors (2 external and 1 internal). The KEY FOBS will be issued to all our coaches and elite athletes once they have completed their induction and signed the users agreement.
