START FITNESS METROPOLITAN LEAGUE – The final fixture of an outstanding season for Shaftesbury took place last Saturday at Trent Park. I believe this was probably out best season ever for enthusiasm and success both Individual and Team results (If anyone wishes to dispute this, I will only be too pleased to hear from you).
The Shaftesbury dominance rolled on with another incredible day, finishing with no less than 6 winners, which were POSIE SHAW U11, ARTHUR PHILLIPS U11, GIANLEO STUBBS U13, JOANNE MIRANDA U17, DYLAN EVANS and JO KENT V50. Our teams were equally successful with wins from the UNDER 11 BOYS, UNDER 13 BOYS, UNDER 15 BOYS/UNDER 17 MEN and UNDER 15 GIRLS/UNDER 17 WOMEN.

The following are details of each race;
Under 11 Boys concluded the season with 9 runners on the day, which is 3 better that we had at Welwyn, Uxbridge and Alexander Palace. The race itself was another outstanding success for ARTHUR PHILLIPS winning his 3rd race in succession after finishing 2nd in the first two fixtures, there were top 10 finishes from MAX PANWAR who was 4th and JARED MORRIS finished 8th.
Congratulations to team by finishing the season in 2nd place, especially after the first fixture at Claybury in which the home club Woodford Green & Essex Ladies finished some 79 points in front of us. The following 4 fixtures were 2nd twice and won twice, although Woodford worst position was 3rd enabling them to win the league.
Under 11 Girls saw POSIE SHAW invincibility throughout the season and ended up winning all 5 races, NYAH CAINE was just outside the top 10 in 11th place. Congratulations to team by finishing the season in 2nd place, and again at Claybury they came away 55 points behind Woodford Green & Essex Ladies. The following 3 fixtures the team were very consistent moving us up from 6th to 2nd place, and at Trent Park we kept in front of London Heathside to claim 2nd place overall.
Under 13 Boys almost repeated POSIE’S achievement, with GIANLEO STUBBS won the final race after missing the Uxbridge race, giving him 4 wins for the season. The other race at Uxbridge was won by ZICO JONES making it a clean sweep of all 5 races. We packed well with THOMAS CADWALLADER finishing 2nd, AUSTIN WARD 5th and ZICO JONES 7th. The team were equally as dominant winning 4 of the 5 races, and 3rd at Uxbridge, meaning they were league winners by a margin of 98 points.
Under 13 Girls It has been an inconsistent season for the girls, and due to various reasons, we were understrength in two of the fixtures. This has been reflected in our final league position of 7th. EVIE REDPATH finished 19th which was her 4th race of the season.
Under 15 Boys and Under 17 Men’s Congratulations to you all on a very successful season in which they averaged 13 runners throughout the season, Individually SAMUEL GREENSTEIN won the 1st and 3rd Under 15 races and finished 2nd in the final two races, in the Under 17 races JUDE MIRANDA finished 2nd in the first 2 races and MUKHTAR MUSA won the 4th race and finished 2nd at Trent Park. The team have not looked back since they finished a close 2nd to Woodford Green & Essex Ladies at Claybury, at the next fixture at Welwyn they overhauled Woodford to take the overall lead by 1 point, following this they never looked back by eventually becoming league winners by 105 points.
Under 15 Girls and Under 17 Women’s Congratulations to you all on a very successful season in which they averaged 9 runners throughout the season, Individually JOANNE MIRANDA has won the last 4 races and was 3rd at Claybury to FREYA STAPLETON. The team had an excellent start to the season at Claybury, winning by 22 points, and their success has grown culminating becoming league winners at Trent Park by a margin of 127 points.
Under 20, Senior & Veteran Men’s Overall the season has finished very promisingly, and the last 2 fixtures we averaged 15 runners and we finished the season in 9th place overall. Last season we finished 8th, although our points total was almost 1000 points below this year. For us to challenge next season we a few more runners to finish in the top 50. Our Veterans team just held onto their status in Division 2, but again we have not had the 5 to score at most of the fixtures.
Individually we have seen the emergence of DYLAN EVANS, who won his 3rd race in succession at Trent Park, THOMAS BUTLER U23 and PHILLIP CROUT have been consistent top 10 finishers, our Under 20 Men had JEREMY DEMPSEY winning at Welwyn after finishing 4th in the race and GEORGE GROOM who was 3rd U20 at Welwyn and 1st at Uxbridge. ROBERT RIGBY won the V55 age-group at Alexandra Palace and was 3rd at Trent Park.
Under 20, Senior & Veteran Women’s It was a season that we managed to finish just below mid-table in 7th place, and with having only 4 runners twice meant that as you need 5 to score you are penalised. Individually NAOMI TASCHIMOWITZ won the first race at Claybury, also INDIRA PATEL finished 2nd twice and SOPHIA STAAB was 3rd twice in the Under 20 category. JO KENT finished 1st three times in the V50 category.

ALEXANDER STADIUM REVAMP GETS THE GREEN LIGHT  the following article was taken from the Athletics Weekly website. Athletics venue to undergo a £72 million refurbishment ahead of the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth GamesTriple jumpers NATHAN DOUGLAS and ABAZZ SHAYAAM-SMITH were among those to attend an event on Thursday 30 January celebrating Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games plans taking a large leap forward as Alexander Stadium revamp proposals were approved.

The Perry Barr venue, which is the home of UK Athletics, is set to undergo a £72 million refurbishment ahead of hosting athletics action as well as the opening and closing ceremonies at the Games, set to take place from 27 July 27 to 7 August 2022. The plans would see the redeveloped stadium increase its permanent seating capacity from 12,700 to 18,000, allowing more than 30,000 during the Games through additional temporary seating. As well as holding the Games, the revamped stadium is set to host a range of tenants including the Birchfield Harriers Athletics Club and Birmingham City University.

Birchfield Harriers’ SHAYAAM-SMITH, who is a Team England scholarship recipient, said: “The first time I came here I was 13 years old. Today was the first day I have been to the track since they knocked down the main stand. It’s going to be inspirational. I’ve seen the designs and it’s going to look really good. “It’s really important, not just for athletes competing, but for how many people like me will get to come into this track and be inspired. “To think of how many nations will come here in 2022 and compete on this track, it’s so exciting.”

IAN REID, chief executive for Birmingham 2022, said: “The Alexander Stadium is a pivotal venue for the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games, as not only will it host the track and field events for athletics but it’s also where we will stage our official opening and closing ceremonies for the Games. “Today’s news that planning approval has been granted is therefore a key moment for us as the organisers of the Games and one which we are pleased to be able to celebrate with our partners. “Birmingham City Council will be delivering the new sections of the stadium and we look forward to watching progress over the next couple of years, ahead of us moving into the stadium when we deliver the Games in 2022.” Key features of the revamped stadium include a new western stand replacing the Main, Knowles and Nelson stands plus new tiered seating to the north and south. The competition track will be re-laid and a new six lane, 400m warm-up track will be built, while there will be new stadium lighting and a practice throwing field. Construction of the new stand will commence this spring, with completion planned for late 2021. This will be followed by test events ahead of the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games.

THE CLOCKS WENT BACK 1 HOUR ON SUNDAY 27 OCTOBER The significance of this is that on training evenings it will be dark during your warm up/down period. Could I advise all athletes to wear something Bright at Night, especially on Tuesday and Thursday training evenings. Please be safe, when running on the roads, especially within Copthall from wearing dark clothing. For your safety, we have a number of Hi-Vis bibs in the clubhouse which you can borrow at the beginning of your run and return at the end of it.

CURRENT DISTRIBUTION OF SHAFTESBURY INFORMATION Currently I notify members (by email) using “MailChimp”. The reason I changed, was in November 2017 “Gmail” put a limit of 100 addresses that users could send to in a 24-hour period, and currently I send to approximately 850 members each issue.

On seeking technical advice “MailChimp” was recommended as the best way for SBH to go forward. There is one thing you should be aware off is that when you receive an email from me, the footer at the bottom has 4 options, of which one is “Unsubscribe Me From List”. Could I ask you not to select this as if you do you will be automatically removed from my distribution list.
