WISHING YOU ALL A MERRY CHRISTMAS AND A HAPPY, HEALTHY AND SUCCESSFUL 2018 With 2017 coming to an end, our achievements from our Young Athletes right through to our Seniors are too numerous to mention. You can view these Achievements on the SBH website by using this link – http://sbharriers.co.uk/about-us/2013-2/

Last month I become President of Shaftesbury and look forward to 2018 with great anticipation. I intend supporting the club at various fixtures throughout the year. In particular, I am planning to attend the Commonwealth Games in Australia in April and look forward to meeting the many SBH athletes who will be competing in the Gold Coast.

A special thanks to our Officials, Coaches and Team Managers whose hard work and professionalism enables our athletes to perform at their highest level. 2017 has been a year where our membership, especially amongst the Young Athletes, has grown substantially. Both our Coaches and the Allianz Park facility have been creaking at the seams with the increased level of activity.

For those who want a challenge, the Boxing Day Race at Allianz Park is the place to be after a stressful Christmas Day. Both the one and two lap races start at 11.00 (£1 entry fee) and are open to all age-groups including parents and pets, with fancy dress being optional. There will be prizes, raffle and refreshments.

HOW TO TREAT ACHILLES HEEL PROBLEMS the following article was on the Athletics Weekly website recently, which was written by LAUREN GOWLAND who is a fifth-year medical student at Lancaster Medical School and a member of Blackpool, Wyre and Fylde AC.

Achilles tendon injuries afflict runners about 10 times more frequently than non-athletes of the same age. From Achilles tenosynovitis, Achilles tendinitis, Achilles tendinosis, Achilles rupture to Achilles tendinopathies, most of us have experienced the pain of them at some point in our careers. But what causes them and how do we treat and avoid them?
The Achilles tendon is the thickest tendon in the human body. It attaches the plantaris, gastrocnemius and soleus muscle to the posterior tuberosity of the calcaneus serving its main function to plantar flex the foot.
It is surrounded by a connective tissue sheath also known as a paratendon. This structure is highly vascular and allows the tendon to glide more easily with movement. All conditions are treatable, but with varying degrees of success. With the correct diagnosis and appropriate management measures put in place, recovery will usually take around three months.
But since the treatment options available are so vastly controversial, the risks and benefits of each option need to be thoroughly assessed and matched to each individual case before a final decision is made, so make sure you consult a medical expert if you are plagued by the problem.
In the meantime, here’s a guide that might help you.
Achilles tenosynovitis This is inflammation of the sheath surrounding the tendon. It commonly causes fibrosis and scarring within the sheath restricting the range of motion of the Achilles tendon. Symptoms experienced with this condition include pain, tender swelling around the Achilles and crepitus on movement of the ankle joint.
Causes for this condition relate to having a tight calf and Achilles complex, changing the volume of training completed or changing the type of footwear being worn.
What to do: Management options for Achilles tenosynovitis can be divided into short and long term plans. Firstly, rest from the aggravating sport. Secondly, at the time of the injury, ice and compression should be applied for about 10-15 minutes every hour for 3-4 hours. This will ease pain along with reducing swelling and inflammation.
Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs may be given for a few days to a week to reduce inflammation also. Longer term management of Alfredson’s eccentric heel drops (see below), massage and a change in footwear is recommended.
Achilles tendinopathy This is an umbrella term for clinical conditions in and surrounding the tendon. Medically speaking, tendinopathy is due to non-inflammatory, intra-tendinous collagen degeneration with fibre disorientation and thinning.
Under examination, the overall bulk of the Achilles tendon will increase while its overall strength will decrease. There two types of tendinopathy – insertional, where the Achilles joins to the calcaneus – and non-insertional, occurring approximately two to six centimetres from this point. Symptoms include increasing pain, stiffness around the tendon.
What to try: Heat and light walking are known to improve the symptoms whereas strenuous activity is likely to exacerbate them.
There are three main response stages. Firstly, reactive tendinopathy is a short-term response whereby the Achilles thickens and stiffens in an attempt to reduce the load being placed upon it. The tendon disrepair is due to delineation of the tendon fibres.
Finally, in the degenerative tendinopathy stage, which is more common in older athletes, due to chronic overloading, collagen becomes disorganised and the matrix begins to break down. Increased vascularity and neuronal ingrowth contribute to this stage.
Achilles tendinitis Achilles tendinitis is inflammation of the Achilles tendon itself. There are two main locations where this occurs: firstly, at the insertion point where the tendon attaches to the calcaneus and secondly, at the mid-point of the tendon. In both cases the damaged tendon fibres may calcify providing symptoms of stiffness and pain.
There are many theories about what triggers it including overuse of the Achilles, muscle imbalance or weakness, decreased blood supply and tensile strength with aging or even malalignment such as hyper-pronation.
The tenocytes themselves produce Substance P and prostaglandin E2, inflammatory mediators, in response to increased loading. This subsequently leads to delineation of the tendon fibres.
What to try: There have been numerous studies conducted to determine the best treatment for Achilles tendinitis, but the outcome remains unclear. According to the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE), first line management
for Achilles tendinopathies includes rest; stopping the precipitating sport that caused the injury.
Provide analgesia for the pain itself. Non-Steroidal Anti Inflammatory Drugs (NSAIDS) are advised for an acute injury but longer term paracetamol would be preferable due to the lower risk of side effects.
In terms of easing symptoms, the application of ice packs or cold compresses to the area immediately after the injury will be of some benefit.
Achilles tendinopathy A total of 66% of Achilles tendon problems occur in runners and it is down to characteristically chronic overuse of the Achilles tendon while training. Other causes of tendinopathy include extreme overloading such as rapid increase in training volume, poorly fitting footwear, change in running surface or excessive pronation of the foot. There’s also a genetic link with Achilles tendinopathy.
What to try: The treatment of Achilles tendinopathies is multifactorial and highly controversial. Initial approaches would be the same as recommended for Achilles tendinosis. Evidence suggests that eccentric rehabilitation programmes promote the most effective outcomes. The Achilles responds to this type of exercise as the fibres of the tendon are reorganised to deal with a higher load.
You could also try orthotic devices that marginally lift the heel or support the arch with the aim of reducing the strain on the tendon while it heals.
HOW TO DO THE HEEL DROP One of the recommended exercise programmes based on eccentric heel drops was devised in 1998 by Dr HAKAN ALFREDSON, a Swedish sports medicine doctor. It is known as “ALFREDSON’S heel drop protocol” and the exercise regimen comprises three sets of 15 heel drops twice daily for 12 weeks.
The exact technique to perform these exercises involves the patient standing on a step with both heels overhanging. The patient lifts the injured heel off the step and raises the good heel to plantarflex the foot, still on the step.
Secondly, the weight is transferred onto the injured foot in the plantar flexed position, over the edge of the step.
Finally, to complete the exercise, the heel is slowly lowered over the edge of the step over approximately 10 seconds until the foot is in the dorsiflexed position. A variation is to bend the injured leg. This puts more weight through the tendon to strengthen it further.
WHAT ELSE TO TRY Vary where you run: For example, run on grass or trail instead of road to reduce the load put through the Achilles tendon. Similarly, reassess the choice of footwear.
Change your footwear: Many runners who suffer with Achilles tendinopathies have a hyper-pronated running style. This is the movement of the subtalar joint into eversion, dorsiflexion and abduction. Finding a supportive shoe to help counteract some of this movement will reduce the susceptibility to such injuries.
Avoid steroid jabs: NICE does not support the use of steroid injections as a recognised treatment for Achilles tendinopathies as there’s an increased risk of tendon atrophy or rupture.
Try shock wave therapy: With this treatment, acoustic shockwaves are passed through the skin and directed at the Achilles tendon with the aim of boosting blood flow to the area and promoting regrowth of the tendon in a linear fashion.
Look for lasers: Low level laser therapy is thought to increase collagen production and reduce blood flow in new vessels. It’s best used as adjuncts to eccentric Achilles exercises.
Surgery as a last resort: Rarely, resistant Achilles tendinopathy may require open surgery to excise fibrous adhesions and degenerative nodules. Surgical methods are of main benefit in acute rupture as opposed to tendinopathies. Younger athletes with full rupture are more likely to benefit from surgical repair as risk of re-rupture is reduced. With a possible future sporting career the benefits of surgery are likely to outweigh any risk.

Producing a run split of 16:44, which was more than a minute quicker than anyone else, Potter cut through the field from ninth place starting the run to take the lead. Indeed, by the time she reached the finish line she had extended her advantage to a dominating margin of 43 seconds, over THERESE FEUERSINGER (AUT), who last week finishing fourth in the ITU World Junior Triathlon Championships.

DARYLL NEITA AN ATHLETE ON THE RISE – The following article was published on the Athletics Weekly website recently.
Barely out of the junior ranks, DARYLL is already building an impressive sprints CV, writes Stuart Weir

No British Woman has ever reached the 100m final in the IAAF World Championships, so when DARYLL ran 11.16 to finish fourth in her semi-final in London in August, it represented the best performance ever by a GB athlete.
The 21-year-old first came to public attention when she finished second in the UK Championships and Olympic Trials in 2016. She recalls: “I would say I was a bit of an underdog going into the trials. No one expected me to come out where I did.
“But I decided a week before, ‘actually I do want to win this.’ So, I went into it thinking, ‘there is no reason why I can’t do well at the trials.’ “I went into it feeling confident and actually wanting to win it.”
She ran a PB of 11.23 to clinch second place. She added: “I shocked a lot of people because people did not know my capability and especially running under pressure. And I proved to myself that I could do it.”
Young talent DARYLL started running at a very young age and was spotted in a primary school sports day in year 6. Her mum tells a story of how she was running in a park with her cousins. The cousins were a lot older than her but she ran away from them.
Her mum then made a life-changing decision, taking her to the local athletics club but they said she was too young. She joined after primary school and has been running ever since.
The 2015 season was her breakthrough year. She was selected for the European Junior Championships and despite running with a hamstring injury, finished fourth in the 100m in 11.69 seconds.
She then ran in the Anniversary Games in London and was selected for the 4x100m squad for the IAAF World Championships in Beijing. Although she did not run in Beijing, she looks back on it as “a positive year that put me into the senior scene” and she adds: “Beijing was a great experience and I think that prepared me for Rio because I understood what athletics was about and what a championship was like.”
Her reward for finishing second in the trials was selection for the European Championships in Amsterdam and the Olympics. At the Europeans, it was decided that she would just run the relay and not the individual 100m.
“Beijing was a great experience and I think that prepared me for Rio because I understood what athletics was about and what a championship was like”
She said of her experience in Amsterdam: “It was great competition and we came out with a medal as well. It was great momentum going into the Anniversary Games and gave us a lot of excitement. At the Anniversary Games, we ran a national record and going into Rio we were excited feeling that we could definitely come out with an Olympic medal.”
In the heat in Rio she missed the semi-final by three hundredths of a second. I have a vivid memory of that race as I bumped into her in the stadium and we walked together to the exit. She was so down on herself but one year later she reflects: “I was absolutely gutted because I had wished all my life to be in that position and it had come crumbling down in an awful fashion. I wasn’t happy with how I had performed or with how I handled the whole situation.”
When I pointed out that she was only three hundredths of a second from making the semi-final, she dismissed my comment, saying: “I know but I ran tragically badly.”
She feared she had blown her chance completely. “I thought I wasn’t going to be picked for the relay and my whole Rio experience was over,” she said. “When I was picked for the relay, it was like ‘thank God they have given me another chance’. And then to come out with a medal. In the space of three days, my whole life changed. I had never been so down and I have never been so happy – so it worked out well in the end.”
She said of the Olympic relay in which GB took the bronze behind USA and Jamaica: “It was amazing. We won our heat and we were thinking ‘we won that by quite a bit. In the final we can really go for it’. That gave us all the confidence we needed.
“We were thinking that all we needed to do was go out and do the same again or even improve. We really came together as a team. Everyone was supporting each other and there was great energy. Getting on the podium, the celebrations afterwards was all a dream and the best thing ever.”
London calling DARYLL confirmed her place in London 2017 with second place in the trials behind ASHA PHILIP, running 11.25 into a 1.3m/sec headwind.
She also set two PBs this season – 11.20 for 100m at the England Under-23 Championships at Bedford and then 11.14 (again into a wind, this time 0.4m/sec) in the Müller Anniversary Games.
She went into London 2017 with confidence. “Rio showed me that I could definitely make the semi-final and who knows what could happen then,” she explains. “So I went into London this year way more confident, wanting to win, no matter who’s next to me in the race.”
That confidence showed when she won her London 2017 heat in 11.15, her second fastest time ever. She said: “It was absolutely amazing, winning in front of a home crowd – it was just the heat, I know there is more to come. A lot of anxiety has gone now.”
“I went into London this year way more confident, wanting to win, no matter who’s next to me in the race”
She would have needed to have run a PB to reach the final, which she missed by nine hundredths of a second. But having run 11.15 and 11.16 against a PB of 11.14, she let no one down. She said of the semi-final where she finished behind MARIE-JOSEE TA LOU, DAFNE SCHIPPERS and KELLY-ANN BAPTISTE but beat two Jamaicans and an American: “It was a pretty tough field and I actually feel like I did do decently well. I am known for having a poor start and I think it was really good. I’m someone who doesn’t put limits on myself massively and I’m always aiming for the best, I’m always aiming for the highest.”
Then she anchored the 4x100m team to a silver medal and, for a moment, it looked as if she was catching world champion TORI BOWIE. She remembers: “DINA passed to me in a really great position and I was like ‘I’m going to run for my life here,’ and that’s what I did and I crossed the line and we got silver. I knew she was going to go off really hard and I tried my best to stick with her but then she found another five gears.”

Running in the London Stadium was a special experience. She points out: “The stadium is 20 minutes from my house and I drive past it each day on my way to training. Every day I was thinking, ‘I need to be there on that podium’ and getting silver with the girls makes that dream come true.”
In 2012 she ran in a schools’ championship which was held as a test event in the Olympic Stadium. She won the gold medal. She recalls thinking: “I am running on this track before Usain Bolt – and then he can go and do what he needs to do on it.”
She was in the stadium watching the great man win the London Olympic 100m title. Now, five years later, she was back running in the same stadium in the same World Championships as BOLT and the experience did not disappoint. “When your name is announced, the stadium just roars, the loudest cheer ever. You get chills and feel the vibrations.”
Speaking after the relay, DARYLL mentioned getting a buzz from seeing BOLT and FARAH warm-up as she prepared for the relay, adding: “I’m very happy to be part of the generation which gets to say goodbye to BOLT while competing there as well.”
She won Olympic, world and European medals all before her 21st birthday, so I suspect there is a lot more to come from this young British sprinter.

WINTER CROSS COUNTRY CLUB CHAMPIONSHIPS – Congratulations to the first winners of the 2017/2018 season – Under 20 Men THOMAS BUTLER, 5 Miles Senior Men RICHARD GOODMAN and Masters Men 40+ KARL BULMAN.

GET WELL SOON TYTY HOLDEN last Saturday morning fell over on a hill at Trent Park, he then turned up at the Metropolitan League looking worse for wear thinking it was a torn muscle, in fact he had dislocated his shoulder. TY managed to go to the Lee Valley Open Meeting on Sunday as well.
Following a Hospital visit he now has a sling and some mobility and can function! No cycling or lifting for a while though They struggled to get the shoulder back in and just gas was not enough so had to put him under to fix the problem (so unlikely it will ever come out again) which was all very time consuming plus a 3 hour wait in A and E.

START FITNESS METROPOLITAN LEAGUE – The third fixture of five took place last Saturday at Uxbridge.
An excellent day with a fantastic 5 Individual wins, first in the Under 11 Boys GIANLEO STUBBS made it 3 wins out of 3, next in the Under 15/17 Men’s race THOMAS PATRICK following his excellent run in the National Relays won the Under 17 race by 5 seconds. In the Under 15/17 Women’s race LIA RADUS in her first league race of the season won the Under 17 race.
The Senior athletes produced 2 wins, firstly NAOMI TASCHIMOWITZ in her first league race of the season had a hard-fought race winning by just 1 second, in the Men’s race RICHARD GOODMAN had a slightly easier win, and has now won 10 senior races.
There were top 10 finishes from THOMAS CADWALLADER U11 3rd, ANDONI AMPHLETT U11 9th, SAMUEL GREENSTEIN U13 4th, LEO RONCARATI U13 10th, MAAYAN RADUS U15 4th, ELENA RONCARATI U15 5th, GRACE INGLES U15 7th, BEN WINFIELD U17 7th, SOPHIA STAAB U17 8th and JOSEPHINE CHADWICK U17 8th.
Our teams were as equally impressive starting with our Under 11 Boys winning again, and moved up from 3rd place overall to now lead by a margin of 6 points over VP&TH. The Under 13 Boys secured our 2nd win of the day moving up from 5th to 3rd place overall. The Under 15/17 Men improved superbly to finish in 2nd place behind the home club Hillingdon, which moved them up to 2nd place overall. The Under 15/17 Women with 15 of them finishing had 6 in the top 10, securing their third win out of three and now have a massive 118 point lead over London Heathside.
The Senior Men were slightly short of numbers at the front end, but still maintained their 4th place overall, finally our Senior Women managed an 8th place finish but are in a slightly precarious position of 10th place overall.

LUCY is currently a first year Under 17 and in this year’s Norfolk Championships won the Shot, Discus and Hammer titles. LUCY also won the Norfolk Schools Championships setting a championship record in the Hammer with a throw of (50.96m).

Currently her training has been a bit hit and miss with a ligament injury from a school netball accident, which drags on and continues to swell up her ankle. But at least she is in the winter conditioning season and not yet in spring time!

THE IMPORTANCE OF SLEEP FOR ATHLETES – The following was published on the Athletics Weekly website recently, and was written by Professor JOHN BREWER who is head of the school of sport, health and applied science at St Mary’s University in Twickenham

Sleep is an often overlooked but vital component of athletics performance, as Professor John Brewer explains
Most of us spend approximately one third of our lives asleep, and it is easy to view this as time that is ‘wasted’, with little benefit for training or competing. However, sleep is an essential part of an athlete’s training, and is the time when many of the physiological adaptions to the stimulus of training takes place.
How we sleep – The human ‘body clock’ is regulated by a series of cycles known as the ‘circadian rhythm’, which determines areas such as digestion, hunger, body temperature and heart rate, as well as the time of day when we sleep.
Sleep scientists have found that we have a series of sleep phases each lasting approximately 90 minutes, which initially take us into alternating periods of deeper and lighter sleep, before gradually emerging to a lighter pre-awakening stage characterized by rapid eye movement, or REM.
How sleep aids recovery
It is during the deeper, non-rem phases, where sleep does most to help to support athletes. One of the first things to occur is the redistribution of blood supply, with over 40 per cent of the blood that normally goes to the brain during waking hours diverted to the muscles.
At the same time, hormones are released that help with the repair and growth of tissues, something that is essential after a long or intensive run or race. One of the main hormones that is released is human growth hormone, which plays an essential part in rebuilding and developing the proteins that constitute the muscle fibres that will have been repeatedly exposed to the rigours and stimulus of running. Muscle and liver glycogen stores will also be replenished, ensuring that energy reserves are at full capacity in time for the next run.
READ: Five things you should know about sleep
Immunity boost
There is also evidence to suggest that sleep helps to support the body’s immune system, something that is crucial if illness and infections are to be avoided. While asleep, the body releases proteins called cytokines.
Some of these help to promote sleep, while others are important in the fight against inflammation and infection, and to combat the physical stresses that are caused as a result of training.
Plan to sleep
Scientists and medical practitioners often recommend exercise during the daytime as a means of enhancing sleep quality, since the body responds to the need to recover and repair by increasing sleeping time and quality. However, since sleep involves a reduction in heart rate, core temperature and blood pressure, it is not advisable to finish a training session or run just before going to bed, because the residual effects of an elevated metabolic rate will make it much harder to fall asleep.
Sleep loss hampers performance
While there are clear and unequivocal benefits from sleep for athletes, continuous sleep loss can be a major issue, with the risk of injury, illness and fatigue all increasing. The amount of sleep that we require varies from one person to another, with 7–8 hours being the norm for most adults, athletes sometimes needing slightly more. So, sleep is as much a part of your training and preparation as your weekly sessions, and without the restorative effects of sleep it would be impossible to train effectively and compete.
Nevertheless, few athletes get a sound night’s sleep before a major competition, due to the combined effects of anxiety and the need to wake at an early hour to get to the start line.
While it is easy to panic if you are not sleeping well on the night before a race, I have never yet seen an athlete fall asleep while racing or competing. Keep things in perspective.

THE BIG HALF TO HOST THE BRITISH HALF MARATHON CHAMPIONSHIPS MO FARAH and CALLUM HAWKINS are set to be among the entries for the new event in London in March. New London event The Big Half is to host the British Half Marathon Championships on Sunday 4 March 2018.

The event, which has so far announced the addition of MO and CALLUM to its elite men’s field, will also serve as one of the final opportunities for athletes to achieve qualifying times for the British team for the IAAF World Half Marathon Championships in Valencia on 24 March.
“We’re delighted that The Big Half will incorporate the British Half Marathon Championships next March,” said BARRY FUDGE, head of endurance for British Athletics.
“London Marathon Events’ support for the endurance programme ensures athletes have the best preparation for success, and hosting our championship race gives athletes a great opportunity to run fast times amongst great spectator support.”
HUGH BRASHER, event director for The Big Half, said: “London Marathon Events is proud to host the British Half Marathon Championships at The Big Half on Sunday 4 March. This new event features a fantastic route through our great capital city, starting by Tower Bridge and finishing in front of the Cutty Sark, which is truly fitting for a national championship.”
To enter the British Half Marathon Championships, runners need to have run a sub-75:00 or sub-85:00 time for men and women respectively after 1 January 2016.
