SBH 20 YEARS AGO – The photograph shows the start of the 1996 English National Cross Country Championships at Newark, Nottinghamshire. The photographs shows IAN CORNFORD 3453, JOHN SHERBAN 3475 and DOMINIC BANNISTER 3474 who is to the right of 2 time National winner EAMONN MARTIN 179. The race was very close until the final 3k when JOHN NUTTALL of Preston pulled away to win (40.35), JOHN came 2nd (40.55)  and DOMINIC came 3rd (41.04). In 1998  DOMINIC excelled on a very hilly course in Roundhay Park, Leeds becoming National Champion (44.45) winning from BARRY ROYDEN (45.14) and JUSTIN PUGSLEY (45.20).

DOMINIC just like JOHN was equally happy on the roads and in 2002 represented England at the Commonwealth Games Marathon in Manchester, finishing 10th (2:19.31), although his personal best was set in 2000 (2:14.39). DOMINIC, JOHN and IAN were members of Shaftesbury’s  victorious team in the 1993 National 12 Stage Road Relay in Sutton Park, Birmingham. On the opening long leg of 5 Miles 706 Yards DOMINIC brought us home in a very close 4th (25.55), IAN was on Long Leg 9 finishing in 2nd place (26.22) some 65 seconds behind Salford Harriers, following a somewhat disastrous Leg 10 it was now left Leg 11.

They say it’s not over until the fat lady sings … well, in road relays it’s not over until JOHN SHERBAN runs. With Shaftesbury seemingly dead and buried, JOHN turned on the power to turn a 91 second deficit into a 46 second lead. His (25.07) was the fastest of the day. JOHN, a man who spent some of his younger days sleeping on park benches before races, must have got ready in a telephone box for this one because it was certainly a performance of superman proportions.

When JOHN ran the fastest leg in the AAA Six Stage at Chorley in October 1991 Gateshead’s Stan Long, a man who has seen more road relays than anyone i know called it the “Finest” he had ever seen. What would he have said about this one?

The men JOHN picked off on his way to the front were no mugs, first to fall was Coventry’s Gareth Deacon, followed by Boxhill’s Ken Penney, then Swansea’s Shaun Tobin and finally Salford’s Mike Higginbottom, JOHN not only took the race by the scruff of its neck but squeezed all the life out of it.

A DIG INTO THE ARCHIVESI happen to stumble on this photograph, showing JULIAN GOATER winning the 1981 National Cross Country Championships at a very, very muddy Parliament Hill Fields. JULIAN seemed to have a different gear from the remaining runners, and ran away from the field in a time of (44.39), 2nd place went to Dave Clarke of Hercules Wimbledon a 3 time winner of the National (46.34) yes 1 minute 55 seconds behind, and 3rd Mike McLeod of Elswick Harriers (46.58) who won in 1979. Also there was an amazing run was by Dave Moorcroft (former 3000m World record holder) who somehow missed the start of the race, and worked his way through the field to finish in 4th place.

JULIAN had a major accident in the summer, coming off his bike and fracturing his pelvis. He was in hospital and has spent the last 3 months recuperating, including daily visits to the gym/pool and is making good progress.

Last year JULIAN published an excellent book ‘The Art of Running Faster’, and if you wish to purchase a signed copy please contact him at juliangoater@gmail.com
