BERKS, BUCKS AND OXON CROSS COUNTRY CHAMPIONSHIPSTook place at Henley on 19 November.
Senior Women – SW AMELIA WILLS U23 (HCA) won the Bronze Medal (35.29)

NCAA D1 CHAMPIONSHIPS – Took place at Stillwater, Oklahoma, USA on 19 November.
10000m XC – SM CHARLES HICKS U23 (Stanford University) 1st (28.44)

The following article was published on the Athletics Weekly website recently. Photographs below were taken by DAVID HICKS.
CHARLES HICKS became the fourth British man to win America’s premier cross-country race and the first for over 30 years. Representing Stanford University, the 21-year-old won an exciting race on a tough circuit, smashing the course record in the process. NICK ROSE, later a world cross-country bronze medallist, won it in 1974 during a golden era in the 1970s that also saw victories from Americans STEVE PREFONTAINE and CRAIG VIRGIN and Kenya’s HENRY RONO. The other British male winners include MARK SCRUTTON, who won in 1982, plus JOHN NUTTALL in 1989, whereas Brits to win the women’s title include KATE AVERY and KATHY BUTLERHICKS, the European under-23 champion 12 months ago in Dublin, had only been third in the NCAA regional race but by 2km he was clear with only the Northern Arizona pairing NICO YOUNG and DREW BOSLEY for company.

CHARLES in his final straight with NICO YOUNG

Last year he finished 14th in the delayed previous season race held in March and then finished a competitive fourth last November before his excellent European victory. Early in 2022 he looked in great form and his (27:40.16) smashed DAVE BEDFORD’S UK under-23 10,000m record but he could only finish a close sixth in the NCAA final having been seventh in 2021.

Here in Stillwater he was willing to bide his time but he was up against YOUNG and the American who ran (13:11.30) last summer for 5000m while still a teenager and came third in both the NCAA indoor and outdoor 5000m finals last summer, may have had the faster speed on paper but it was the US-based Briton who had the strongest kick. In winning HICKS became the first ever Stanford champion and previous students have included the likes of RYAN HALL and current US 5000m and 10,000m record-holder GRANT FISHER. Only 21, he still has two more years of eligibility left. “I didn’t know I was the first winner until the announcer said,” HICKS said. “Given our history, I would have assumed someone had done it. That’s incredible.”

HICKS had finished his track season early and focussed on 100-mile plus training weeks which meant a few disappointments in early season races. “I just had to stay with the belief that when we started coming down my legs were going to feel fresher and when I ran the Pac-12s last month my legs felt lighter and weren’t burning as much and that’s good training. “In the race the NAU guys did 99 per cent of the work and I sat in and conserved energy.” He stretched out on the hills with just a kilometre to go which YOUNG covered and then the American kicked 200m out but the Britain responded for an official winning margin of 0.9 of a second. “It was exactly the race I hoped for,” he said. “I prefer to run strong and aggressive and keep a high intensity and YOUNG and BOSLEY allowed me to run the race I love finding out who has more fitness and who wants it more.”

LONDON LOOK-BACK: LEADING RESULTS, MASTER RECORDS AND START LINE MIX-UP  The following article was published on the Athletics Weekly website recently.

There were veteran marathon records for KENENISA BEKELE, KRISHNA STANTON, SUE MCDONALD and MARY SLOCUM but problems for prospective sub-3hr runners on an eventful day in the British capital. Obviously the wins of AMOS KIPRUTO and YALEMZERF YEHUALAW took the honours at the 2022 TCS London Marathon on October 2 but there were some notable masters athletes results which have been updated after Power of 10 finally processed on October 17. KENENISA BEKELE, many experts’ choice as the greatest all-round distance runner in history, is now 40 years old and he set a world M40 record of (2:05:53). KRISHNA STANTON, the former Australian international running in London for Blackheath & Bromley Harriers, set a world W55 record of( 2:48:06). Racing as KRISHNA WOOD in 1987 she finished fourth in the world indoor 3000m – five hundredths of a second ahead of 1993 winner YVONNE MURRAY and also ahead of 1989 winner ELLY VAN HULST – before going on to win silver in the 2002 Commonwealth Games marathon. In London she blasted the first 10km in (37:08) and despite slowing she was past halfway in (80:46), not far short of the actual world half-marathon record for that event. The second half took seven minutes longer but she held on sufficiently to beat JENNY HITCHINGS’ (2:50:40) from New York in 2019, although she has run quicker than STANTON managed on a point to point course.

In second, SUE MCDONALD, who set a British W50 record last year, this time set a W55 record, despite not being at full  fitness. She too went off quick with a halfway time of (85:47) and though slowing in the second half, she held together well with (21:07), (21:16) and (21:15) for her last three 5km splits. Her chip time of (2:54:39) just about got the better of ANGHARAD MAIR’S (2:54:49) from 2017. That was not the only British record though as W60 winner MARY SLOCUM also set an age group mark. Listed as running for Ireland in the results, she has dual nationality and intends to run for Northern Ireland in the Masters International this autumn. Through halfway in (1:35:40), she only lost a few minutes on the second half and her time of (3:13:26) beat the previous mark of (3:14:37) by LYNDA HEMBURY.

The biggest name in the women’s masters event though was the 1984 Olympic champion JOAN BENOIT SAMUELSON and she won the W65 event in (3:20:20), 38 years after she won in Los Angeles. Another runner from that LA Olympics race, YUKO GORDON, who then ran for Hong Kong (34th in 2:46:12), was a lot closer here and she won the W70 race in (3:31:54) but Canadian DOREEN QUAPP with a two-minute negative split closed on the British age-group record-holder to just over half a minute by the finish.

Other British age-group winners among the women were W40 HELEN GAUNT (2:39:10), W50 JACQUELINE ROCKLIFFE (2:54:08), W75 SUE NICHOLLS (4:34:31) and W80 EILEEN HIERON. British men found it harder as the non-elite race winners were M40 GARY LAYBOURNE (2:21:07), M45 STEWART HAYNES (2:24:57) and M80 BEVIS GILLETT (4:39:17) as the vast majority of men’s titles went overseas. The Wanda World Age Group Championship was the reason for the quality of overseas competitors which was especially good in some of the mid-masters categories. The M60 for example just had two Britons in the top 13.

The third Briton in the age group was London Marathon ever-present CHRIS FINILL. In his 42nd London Marathon, he ran a startling (3:01:18) as he just missed out on setting a world record for the longest span of sub- three-hour marathon (43 years plus) and becoming the first Briton to run a sub-three marathon in six different decades. He does have an excellent chance of setting that record in April though he can already lay claim to be being the most consistent three-hour runner in history having set 33 successive sub-three-hour London Marathons from 1981 to 2013 even if a sub-three has eluded him since 2019. His near miss that time did allow myself to temporarily retain the European and British three-hour span best of 40 years which I won’t be extending. It was my 41st London Marathon, having missed the 1983 event which a well-known course measurer has insisted was slightly short but naturally the many thousands of athletes who set PBs that day which they never went on to better, insist it was fine and there is no Strava data to prove otherwise! This year I ran just over four hours which, after Achilles problems, was done on minimal training with eight miles being the furthest I had run since the 2021 race. For the first London Marathon I averaged 100 miles a week in the build up but here I ran less than a total of 100 miles in the three months leading up to the marathon. It’s not a schedule I would recommend but at least it meant only one very painful long run (the race itself) instead of the 10 or so uncomfortable long runs I normally do! The only reason I did run was purely to keep my run going of completing my 47th year of marathoning – having run at least one marathon since 1976, after finding an alternative marathon to run in 1983. Not confident of finishing with so little training and so many niggles, I actually ran in cycling gear so I could carry stuff and not get stuck trying to get home in running gear. Despite that I enjoyed it (maybe less so, the final 10km!) and it mostly reminded me that in most respects the current London Marathon is undoubtedly the world’s best though it does help that one of the starts is 400m from my door. Every year there seem to be more modern technologies coming in. I was mightily impressed with the photos this year. I sent a selfie and seconds later I got 100 photos back and most were of me though I got a few others of different old men wearing glasses. Yes, Berlin may be a little faster but London has the best prize money, raises the most charity money and has the best elite field in depth, fantastic crowds, a stunning course in the world’s greatest city and fantastic infra-structure and it provides the best race for a elite runner, the British Championships competitors and the fun and charity runner.

However, maybe arguably not a British international runner which were in short supply in 2022 after the withdrawals of MO FARAH, CHRIS THOMPSON, EILISH MCCOLGAN and CHARLOTTE PURDUE. The gaps behind the best elites does mean many of the leading Brits often have a lonely run. ROSE HARVEY, the top British runner was the only women’s finisher between (2:21:42) and (2:37:56) (note, the masses started 40min behind the elite women) though she was paced for some of the race. The men was busier but only 10 men finished between (2:09:52) and (2:20:33) compared to 40 at Berlin. I was marvelling at the efficiency of the organisation as I queued for the toilets (so many, on first look it appeared we had one each) and the speed I got into the pen and across the start and in the early miles I enjoyed the efficiency of the water stations and even the many people to warn of upcoming speed bumps. The only time I did notice something was not quite right was around five miles when suddenly huge groups of fast club runners started overtaking the three-and-a-half-hour pace runners I was with and there were many collisions and I got baulked a number of times. I seem to recall one of the three-hour pacers passed me around halfway. I actually paced sub-three myself for many years at London back and remember thinking it was so simple back then when there were no waves and everything was done by gun time.

It later transpired that there had been a major error on the red start and a lot of angry good club runners. One of them, GRAHAM MERFIELD, said: “On Red start wave one, the runners were all sub-three hours and many like me were also in the age-group world championship. We watched in horror as waves from the yellow start went off in front of us with many in fancy dress and we only left about 18 minutes after the elite runners started. Normally, I would have been right behind them. “It made for a very frustrating and dangerous race for both fast and slower runners,” he added. “I was passing slower runners who had clearly started ahead of me right to the finish. In the early miles and after the starts came together, the runners were so dense that it was difficult to overtake without sometimes bumping runners or we had to run on the curb and off the course. I rolled my ankle on a bottle in the middle of the course adding to the frustration and although I finished, I also have a very swollen ankle.” While there initially huge negativity about the lack of respect given to good UK club runners, London have now acknowledged that it was an unfortunate error that won’t be repeated.

Race director HUGH BRASHER said: “Our sincere apologies to the club runners who were placed in the wrong start wave on the Red Start which meant they started behind slower runners. This was due to human error in the seeding process. We have reviewed what happened and we’re putting in place a process which means this should never happen again.”

CRYSTAL PALACE CLOSED DUE TO PARTS OF THE STADIUM BEING UNSAFE  The following article was published on the Athletics Weekly website recently. Photograph of Crystal Palace in 2022 by MARK SHEARMAN.

Spiritual home of British athletics temporarily shut down following safety fears relating to concrete pillars supporting floodlights. Athletes and coaches who use Crystal Palace for winter training have been left frustrated after the stadium was closed this month due to safety concerns. Concrete pillars supporting the floodlights in the arena have been deemed “unsafe” with the operators of the sports centre announcing the emergency closure last Friday (Nov 18). Since then parts of the park have been reopened with an “exclusion zone” in another area.

A spokesperson for the Greater London Authority (GLA), said: “The GLA has temporarily closed all of the Crystal Palace National Sports Centre after discovering that the pillars supporting the floodlights at the stadium are not safe. “Due to this urgent safety issue, and the requirement to maintain exclusion zones around each of the floodlights, Bromley Council has also needed to close some sections of Crystal Palace Park. “The GLA recognises that this is very frustrating for all users of the site. We apologise for this disruption and are urgently working with the centre operator and Bromley Council on minimising the impacts of the closures.” However the GLA spokesman added: “We are committed to the comprehensive renovation of the Crystal Palace National Sports Centre so that it can deliver positive sporting, community, health and wellbeing outcomes for Londoners. “That is why we have allocated a significant capital budget for the renovation of the centre and appointed contractors to help develop a detailed plan for the works. “It is anticipated that a construction schedule will be announced in the early months of 2023. The GLA is keeping in close contact with local stakeholders and centre users as plans are developed.” Meanwhile Better Leisure, who operate the gym at Crystal Palace, said on Monday (Nov 21) that their facilities would likely remain closed during the early part of this week and that members can temporarily use other Better-owned gyms in the area.

DONOVAN REID, the former international sprinter, told BBC: “To categorise it as a bit of a mess, is like saying the pandemic was a cold. It’s more than a bit of a mess. “We would love it if work to make it safe can be done and then they can start its development. What we don’t want is for someone to shut it down completely. “I have young athletes who I believe can make the Commonwealth, Olympic and World teams and their training is being stifled.”

JOHN POWELL, chair of Crystal Palace Sports Partnership, said the move was the “latest shambolic act in a pathetic, managed decline”. He added: “It was an iconic sporting venue but now it’s being abandoned and left to rot. Nothing solid has been done to resolve the issues.” He added: “It’s a disgrace! Hundreds of thousands of pounds spent on wasted “consultation” exercises and plans leading to nothing. It’s a crime at Crystal Palace which is suddenly closed due to a dodgy floodlight pylon.”

Crystal Palace held many international meetings and national championships during the 1970s and 1980s and until 2012 but has increasingly fallen into disrepair and major events gravitated to the Olympic Stadium in Stratford and, more recently, the newly developed Alexander Stadium in Birmingham. Still, the iconic south-east London venue continues to hold events – such as last month’s South of England Road Relays – and is a training base in one of the most heavily populated areas in the country.

Many have written off Crystal Palace as a decrepit, run-down stadium. It is a reminder of a golden era of athletics but a relic from the past and seemingly beyond repair. There have been moments of hope for it in recent years but this latest shutdown will heighten concerns that it will be demolished.

BIRMINGHAM TO HOST 2026 EUROPEAN ATHLETICS CHAMPIONSHIPS  The following article was published on the Athletics Weekly website recently.

European Athletics Championships to take place in Great Britain for the first time ever. It’s not been long since the Commonwealth Games were in Birmingham but some of the world’s best athletes will be returning once again to the city in four years’ time. This is because Birmingham has been awarded the 2026 European Athletics Championships. The withdrawal of the bid from Budapest, host city of the 2023 World Athletics Championships, meant that Birmingham now has a chance to build its legacy from the Commonwealth Games in a similar, albeit scaled down, fashion to London hosting the World Athletics Championships five years after the 2012 Olympics. Since the turn of the century Great Britain has hosted the Olympics (2012), World Championships (2017), three Commonwealth Games (2002, 2014, 2022), two World Indoor Championships (2003 and 2018) – about to be three in 2024 – and two European Indoor Championships (2007 and 2019). However, it has never hosted the outdoor European Athletics Championships, the 27th edition of which will take place in 2026.

British athletes enjoyed huge success at the most recent event in Munich and Great Britain finished second to Germany in the final athletics table with six gold, six silver and eight bronze medals. Golds came from KEELY HODGKINSON, LAURA MUIR, MATTHEW HUDSON-SMITH, ZHARNEL HUGHES and the men’s 4x100m and 4x400m teams.

According to The Guardian, it looks likely be a standalone event, unlike the multi-sport bonanzas which were staged jointly between Glasgow and Berlin in 2018, then Munich this summer. UK Athletics’ CEO JACK BUCKNER said: “We are delighted and honoured that we have been awarded the privilege of hosting the European Athletics Championships in 2026 in Birmingham. It is wonderful news for athletics and benefits the whole of the UK in demonstrating our ability to host major events across the whole country. “UKA has held a long time wish to deliver this event and we thank European Athletics for its faith in entrusting us with its most important competition. “Our vision for the Championships is about record breaking ticket sales and an amazing atmosphere for athletes to be inspired inside and outside the stadium. We have promised to deliver an amazing, innovative and game changing Championships, and we’re excited we can now put this plan into action!”

Councillor IAN WARD, Leader of Birmingham City Council, said: “We are honoured and privileged to be asked to be the first-ever UK hosts of the prestigious European Athletics Championships in 2026. “Over many years we have demonstrated we are a city that can proudly host major events of this type and scale – and the people of Birmingham and indeed the entire nation have proven time and time again their huge appetite for sport, especially athletics. “The Alexander Stadium is beyond all doubt the premier athletics facility in the country and we cannot wait to welcome the elite of European athletics for this event, which will also bring a range of benefits for local communities and our economy beyond the programme of track and field activities.”

SALLY MUNDAY, CEO of UK Sport, said: “I’m delighted that the UK will be welcoming Europe’s best athletes to Birmingham in 2026. Hosting the European Athletics Championships will be a fantastic opportunity to build on the legacy of the Commonwealth Games earlier this year and I know the British public will get behind the athletes and create a brilliant atmosphere in the Alexander Stadium. “We’ve seen throughout 2022 the significant economic and social benefits of hosting big sporting events in this country and hosting this mega-event will deliver huge benefits for the city of Birmingham, the West Midlands region and the whole of the United Kingdom. It’s also important to recognise that our continued ability to deliver the very best global sporting events is thanks to the ongoing support of The National Lottery.”

Sports Minister STUART ANDREW said: “It is fantastic that Birmingham has been chosen to host the first European Athletics Championship on British soil. The city is perfectly placed to put on the event following record-breaking ticket sales for a brilliant Commonwealth Games earlier this year. “I look forward to seeing Europe’s elite athletes descend on the West Midlands and the Government will continue to work closely with UK Sport, UK Athletics and Birmingham City Council to host another hugely successful event.”

RIGA READY TO WELCOME THE 2023 WORLD ROAD RUNNING CHAMPIONSHIPS  The following article was published on the Athletics Weekly website recently.

Latvian capital stages the World Road Running Champs in 2023 and organisers hope thousands of ordinary athletes will join the elites on the start line. Regular runners have a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to rub shoulders with the best endurance athletes on the planet at the World Road Running Championships in Riga, Latvia, on September 30 and October 1 next year. The inaugural event features races over one mile, 5km and half-marathon with everyone from elite competitors through to club runners poised to take part. ALGARS NORDS, head of the local organising committee, is urging the slower runners not to be intimidated. Instead, he says, it is the chance to race in a global championships and to receive a world championships medal. “Our biggest challenge in the coming months is to get people to realise and get used to the idea that anybody can participate in a world championships,” he says. “We really need to get this message across not only in Latvia but across Europe and the whole world. “They might be scared and thinking ‘that’s not for me, as it’s a world championships. I’ll just do the same event or routine that I do every year’. We want to try to get people out of that loop and to understand they can do a world championships. “The idea that the world championships is for you, for me, for all of us is going to take some time for people to get used to. I want this to be an eye-opener for regular runners.”

World titles have been available in the half-marathon since the early 1990s but these new championships in Riga will offer global medals for one mile and 5km too. Given this, organisers are hoping to attract the best athletes in the world such as Olympic 1500m and world 5000m champion JAKOB INGEBRIGTSEN. “For someone to be able to say ‘I just ran a world championships’ gives a very different meaning to someone’s experience,” says NORDS. “Which other sport offers this? None. “Here you will be able to run the mile, perhaps not directly alongside Ingebrigtsen, but at least from the same start line. For a regular runner to be able to say that and have the bragging rights is amazing.”

Why Latvia Along with Estonia and Lithuania, Latvia is part of the Baltic region in Europe and organisers say the World Road Running Championships will be the biggest-ever sporting event in the area. Basketball and ice hockey are the dominant sports in region but nothing in history has rivalled the sheer number of runners due to arrive in Riga in just under a year’s time. World Athletics awarded the event to the city partly due to their success in growing the Rimi Riga Marathon. Just before the pandemic the annual 26.2-mile event was attracting 38,000 runners across a variety of distances during a weekend-long running festival. With next year’s Rimi Riga Marathon on May 6-7, organisers plan to use it as a “dress rehearsal” for the World Championships less than five months later.

The marathon starts and finishes by Riga Castle and passes many of the city’s picturesque sights. Latvia is also known for being very flat, which means a fast course for all distances. Indeed, the course records for the marathon are (2:08:51) set by ANDUALEM SHIFERAW and (2:26:18) by BIRKE DEBELENORDS and his team have been organising the Rimi Riga Marathon since 2007 and have included various race distances for several years. “One of the main distances for us was 5km because we understood from a beginning that you can’t just start with the marathon,” he explains. “You have to get people moving with smaller distances. “At some point we had 12 or 13,000 participating in the 5km and now, years later, lots of these people have moved to 10km, half marathon or marathon and their kids are running. So it seemed logical for us to want to host an event of this magnitude (the world champs) over several distances.”

Latvia has a fine tradition in athletics. The country’s most famous athlete, JANIS LUSIS, won the Olympic javelin title in 1968 and four European crowns, whereas the nation’s best-known distance runner is JELENA PROKOPCUKA, who was born in Riga and won the New York City Marathon winner in 2005 and 2006. PROKOPCUKA has done much to improve the popularity of distance running in Latvia and NORDS adds: “We always wanted to get Riga on the international stage for running. Before Covid we had almost 5000 international runners coming to Riga every year and this was maybe due to us going to international expos a lot and also we got the Gold Label. So holding the World Championships became a very natural next step.

RESULTS
NATIONAL CROSS COUNTRY RELAYSTook place last Saturday at Mansfield.
The overnight rain and early morning drizzle stopped before the racing began in Berry Hill Park, but the day was always overcast and later runners in the senior men’s race almost needed torches to navigate the wooded sections of the course.

CLARE AND RAY POWELL – On behalf of the Club and myself, we send our thanks and gratitude to CLARE and RAY POWELL for the 7 years of outstanding professionalism and dedication. Also, to rhe many of SBH members and friends who have given their support to RAY and NADEEM, but also prior to them, going back to the early days of the London Marathon cobbles by the Tower of London.

RAY writes – Having been asked to take over from NADEEM SHAIKH in 2015, with organising volunteers for London mini Marathon duties and other London Marathon races.  As NADEEM, had left a very strong 10 year legacy behind him, it was quite a daunting task for CLARE and myself. Our first year was a nervous learning curve, one which we came through without too many hiccups. The proceeding years were very happy times, but always hoping that road closures, train delays, and numerous other reasons that getting up at 3-4am in the morning can throw at you. We were very lucky that at each event 98% of volunteers did turn up. As you will see in the photos at every event the kit was a different colour, so most volunteers have a good selection to choose from. London marathon were very supportive to us both during the years we were with them, which we are very grateful for.

The new Rosterfy system in place now means that London Marathon events have everybody’s details on its database, making mine and CLARE’S job slightly redundant. All the volunteers that we had over the years, London Marathon can now contact yourselves directly, asking whether you will volunteer at all of their events. Financially the club has been receiving on average around £5000 a year, for organising and supplying a team of volunteers for the London Marathon events. This has been changing over the recent years, and in 2022 we have received at total of £150. From 2023 the club will no longer be involved in the organising of any London Marathon events.

Hope to see lots of people at the boxing day run, as there will be London Marathon kit in the raffle.
Regards RAY

HOW THEY TRAIN – LIZZIE BIRD  The following article was published on the Athletics Weekly recently. Photograph of LIZZIE, when receiving her SBH Athlete of the Year and SBH Olympians Tokyo 2020 awards for 2021.

KATY BARDEN speaks to the 3000m steeplechase British record holder about how she laid the foundations for an impressive year.

As the rain lashed down on the streets of New York, European and Commonwealth 3000m steeplechase medallist LIZZIE BIRD brought the curtain down on her exceptional season with a personal best and 10th place in the New Balance Fifth Avenue Mile. As most athletes contemplated end-of-season getaways to exotic locations, the 28-year-old was already focused on her return to law school at the University of Colorado Boulder. Having twice deferred her start date – first due to the 2019 World Championships and then to accommodate the delayed 2020 Olympics – the Public and International Affairs graduate (Princeton), who also has a Masters in International Studies (University of San Francisco), is now in her second year and in the form of her life.

“I think having those two years to really focus on running has pushed me forward this past year,” says the British steeplechase record-holder, who smashed her personal best with (9:07.87) in the Monaco Diamond League in August. “The main thing is that I’ve had pretty much consistent training and no injuries since 2018. During my last few years at Princeton and my Masters, I had quite a few injuries, so although I was progressing, my training kept being cut short. “With a bit of consistency, I’ve just been able to build and build each year in terms of volume, and the quality of my sessions just gets slightly better each year. I’ve had some time to just fully focus on running and it’s allowed me to really figure out what my body could and couldn’t manage, as well as getting the recovery right. “I don’t think I’ve done anything particularly different [in training] this past year, although a big change has been living at altitude for the first time. I think that’s worked really well for my body, for whatever reason.” BIRD was disappointed not to make the final at the World Championships in Eugene, but together with podium performances in Birmingham [silver] and Munich [bronze], in addition to a lifetime best that ranked her ninth fastest in the world this year, it has added fuel to the fire. “If someone had said I’d have a rubbish race at Worlds but do really well at the Euros and Commonwealths, then I’d have been like, ‘okay, that’s fine’,” she admits.

“I definitely thought going into this summer that a medal at the Commonwealths and/or Europeans was possible, but I didn’t think I’d run (9:07). I think having that kind of race and just being really competitive against really good athletes in Monaco, not just running the time, has given me confidence that I could do that again or do something similar at a major championships – and we’ve got a few of them coming up. “It’s really nice we’ve got another Worlds right away [in August of next year], so I’ve got a chance for redemption quite soon. I think going into the Worlds this year it was sort of expected I would make the final and pretty disappointing when I didn’t, but that makes me hungrier for next year.” BIRD has excelled in 2022 and, in parallel, her international profile has grown substantially. Domestically, thanks in part to her on-track rivalry with former British record-holder AIMEE PRATT, the profile of her event has also been raised. “I hope we get more girls and women interested in the steeplechase,” she says. “If we can get more depth then hopefully the momentum will continue.”

A Typical Training Week: BIRD is based in Boulder and is coached remotely by her former college coach in San Francisco, PAT MCCURRY. “I stuck with him. It was just one of those things, if it’s working, then why change it?” she says. She trains mainly alone but is joined by a law school classmate (a former triathlete) for some of her track workouts and long runs. Her average weekly mileage in the winter is 50-60 miles and is typically off six days with rarely any doubles. BIRD’S barrier work throughout the winter is minimal, but more hurdle-specific sessions will be introduced throughout spring and into summer.

Monday: easy run (40-50min), speed development drills and weights. “More and better-quality strength and conditioning sessions have contributed to my progress over the past year,” she says. “My strength coach [MAJ STOK, based in Leeds] writes me a really good programme which is quite steeple-specific. He’s also added in more plyos and box jumps this year, which I hadn’t really done before.” Occasionally a very easy double run or cross train (30min).
Tuesday: session (in winter, sessions will alternate between hills, fartleks, tempo runs, and short track reps; in spring/summer, there will be one longer session and a track session; and in summer, both sessions will often be on the track, or one pre-race track session and a race).
Wednesday: easy run (40min), cross train or rest day (cross train – swim, bike or elliptical).
Thursday: medium-long run (60-80min) and weights.
Friday: session (as above).
Saturday: either easy run (40min), cross train. “This might be quite a long bike ride during the winter which has added to my overall aerobic capacity this year,” she says, or rest day, depending on Wednesday.
Sunday: long run up to 1hr 45min (during winter).

Favourite session: “Anything on the track, especially in the spring when we do more of the faster sessions. One that we’ll do each spring is 3 x 600m with 10min rest in between, so I’m wearing spikes and going pretty much all out by the end. It’s the closest to racing that I do in training – and I like racing – so I enjoy it.”
Least favourite session: “Tempos, unless I’m really fit and they feel easy, which is extremely rare!”

THE MAN BEHIND THE NEW YORK MARATHON  The following article was published on the Athletics Weekly website recently.

An exclusive interview with VINCENT CHIAPPETTA, co-founder of the New York City Marathon. When the first New York City Marathon occurred in Central Park back in 1970, 126 athletes attempted the several loops but less than half of those who entered actually finished. Fast forward just over five decades and the Big Apple plays host to over 50,000 runners, who will try their luck over 26.2 miles across the city’s five boroughs (the Bronx, Brooklyn, Manhattan, Queens and Staten Island) on Sunday (Nov 6). It is the largest marathon in the world. At 87, co-founder of New York Road Runners and the marathon itself, VINCENT CHIAPPETTA is still going strong. He’s been running for 71 years and his passion is unrelenting and unwavering. Over the past 52 years the New York City Marathon has seen hundreds of thousands people complete the race while, on average, two million people now also tune in on TV.

CHIAPPETTA, who grew up loving running due to a dislike for team sports at college, was determined that New York host a race which would inspire generations to not just achieve their goals but get fit and healthy. He also helped take distance running out of track and field, turning it into a separate entity. Alongside FRED LEBOW, who passed away from brain cancer in 1994, the pair went about establishing a looped course in Central Park – it was initially going to be at the Yankee Stadium – before in 1976 they were granted access to the city’s five boroughs. He can’t quite believe how far the race has come. “When I started it we wanted people to get into better shape and they did,” CHIAPPETTA says. “It’s amazing how many people have enjoyed doing it and tell others about it. It’s fabulous. “We ran the longer distances and we wanted to use running as a tool for fitness as we knew how good it was but the perception was different. I remember one man thought that he’d die if he did a marathon but he ended up doing it in 2:36! We changed the whole world with what we did. “What’s great is we run through every borough and the people love it as you can see on a map where you’re going. All the neighbourhoods, with different backgrounds, come out and support the athletes.”

CHIAPPETTA was instrumental in getting women running on an equal basis. It’s perhaps fitting that only women have ever set world records in the able-bodied races. BETH BONNER was the first after clocking (2:55:22) in 1971. She is frequently credited as being the first woman in history to run a marathon in under three hours. In a thrilling three-year stint from 1978 to 1980, Norway’s GRETE WAITZ set three consecutive world records with times of (2:32:30) (1978), (2:27:33) (1979) and (2:25:42) (1980). This year also sees double Olympic silver and world 5000m champion HELLEN OBIRI make her much-anticipated debut at 26.2 miles. “Through the years the women started breaking records,” CHIAPPETTA tells AW. “Women are running faster times now than the men did back then. It’s absolutely fantastic. “That’s a philosophy and it’s permeated so many people. It’s beautiful. When I started it we just wanted people to get into better shape and they did. It’s amazing how many people have enjoyed doing it and tell others about it. It’s fabulous.” The New York Marathon is one of the six Abbott Major Marathons alongside London, Berlin, Tokyo, Chicago and Boston.

One of the most iconic shots is when the runners pass through the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge, which connects Staten Island and Brooklyn. Like any marathon, it’s a chance to show off the city. “Once we went to five boroughs we got TV coverage, all the newspapers came down and it was showcased around the world,” CHIAPPETTA adds. “Every year we got more international entries and by 1981 we had about 6000 people. “We don’t have the historical landmarks of the London Marathon for example but this is New York, it’s an attraction and people are drawn to it. “It’s got to the point about limiting the amount of people but so far we haven’t had to do it. There are 90,000 people who apply. We don’t know how the figures will look in the future. This year we will find out whether we’ve peaked. If we get 50,000 people then we’re doing very well. Participation figures remain strong for marathons worldwide but data shows, that we explore in our November issue of AW, that entries for half marathons and 10km races are down since they restarted after the Covid-19 pandemic. However, with jaw-dropping world records from the likes of ELIUD KIPCHOGE this past year, a chance to run past famous landmarks and the marathon being the ultimate test of endurance for someone, it’s unlikely races over 26.2 miles will suffer the same fate. CHIAPPETTA is one of the best placed people to judge whether that’s a possibility. “We’re not sure what’s going to happen but as long as people want to run they will want to do marathons,” he says. “Even if it’s just one. Why? It’s a statement. You need a certain amount of proficiency to achieve it. As long as people view them in that way then marathons will go on. “We may even need to put two New York City marathons on in the future if numbers rise further, you know!”

CAN YOU HELP PLEASEI would welcome any contributions From Yourselves, any impending marriages, or additions to the family, any running or competing incidents, also past warm weather training/holidays (No Club 24 please). Currently the response has been excellent, but if you have anything that could make it into next week’s Newsletter – please email me.

CURRENT DISTRIBUTION OF SHAFTESBURY INFORMATION Currently I notify members (by email) using “MailChimp”. The reason I changed, was in November 2017 “Gmail” put a limit of 100 addresses that users could send to in a 24-hour period, and currently I send to approximately 850 members each issue.

On seeking technical advice “MailChimp” was recommended as the best way for SBH to go forward. There is one thing you should be aware off is that when you receive an email from me, the footer at the bottom has 4 options, of which one is “Unsubscribe Me From List”. Could I ask you not to select this as if you do you will be automatically removed from my distribution list.

ALAN WELLER – SBH NEWSLETTER EDITOR AND WEBSITE MANAGER

Shaftesbury Barnet Harriers Weekly Newsletter Thursday 3 November 2022

Happy Birthday from this Thursday 3 November to Wednesday 9 November – Timi Bakare, Niall Carney, Shadine Duquemin, Matthew Gillespie, Gudjon Gislason, Anna Higson, Kieron Lee, Daniel Lewis, Tommy Narvaez-White, Charles Romito, Jasmin Sabir, Allan Smith, Calvin Smith, Trecia Smith, Isobel Thompson and Harry Webb

TED KIMBER – It is with great regret that I have to advise you of the death of TED KIMBER and on behalf of the club we send our condolences to his family.
ROSALIND ZEFFERTT recalls that she had the privilege of officiating with TED many, many times, and I can tell you that working alongside his wife JOSIE he was the very best at marshalling the 100m and 200m sprinters in particular. Whenever GERALD ALTERMAN and I were organising our track officials for an SBH meeting, we always started by putting TED and JOSIE in charge of sprints, because we knew that side of things would be taken care of perfectly. As both an official and a competitor I will miss TED’S friendly face at the track.
TED was still an active competitor, and his last race was at the Canons Park Parkrun on the 8 October 2022, competing as a V80 his finish time was (34.45).

The funeral will take place at 2.40 pm Friday 11 November at West Hertfordshire Crematorium, High Elms Lane, Watford WD25 0JS. Afterwards, there will be a celebration of Ted’s life at Aldenham Golf & Country Club, Church Lane, Radlett, WD25 8NN. Please let either Cate Scott (catherinescott2005@yahoo.co.uk) or Alex Horton (alex_horton@live.co.uk) know by 6 November.
No flowers (family only) but donations can be made to Cancer Research UK in Ted’s name.

CHARLES HICKS SETS COURSE RECORD IN PAC-12 DEFENCE  The following article was published on the Athletics Weekly website recently.
Briton in form in Conference event in the Pac-12 Championships, UCR California, USA, October 28. European under-23 cross-country champion CHARLES HICKS showed he is coming into form with the upcoming NCAA Championships and a likely defence of his European title in Turin. He defended his Pac12 title on Friday but more impressively his fast (22:30.9) was a course record by 28 seconds and represents around (4:30) miling. The 21-year-old maybe did not have the 2022 track season initially promised after a (27:40.16) UK under-23 10,000m record in April although finished a close sixth in a tactical NCAA final over 25 laps. Stanford packed six in ten, although second place went to German NCAA 5000m and 10,000m finalist AARON BIENENFIELDHICK’S team-mate KY ROBINSON, Australia’s Commonwealth 10,000m sixth-placer, had beaten HICKS two weeks earlier in Madison but here could only finish sixth.

BRITISH ATHLETICS NAME ATHLETES TO RECEIVE FUNDING AHEAD OF OLYMPICS  The following article was published on the Athletics Weekly website recently.
Congratulations to our 5 athletes who will be receiving funding ELLIE BAKER, CHARLIE DOBSON, LIZZIE BIRD, ZHARNEL HUGHES and SCOTT LINCOLN.

A total of 66 athletes nominated to receive UK Sport National Lottery funding for the coming year. We’re still over 18 months away until the Paris 2024 Olympics but athletes have now discovered if they have been nominated for membership on British Athletics’ Olympic World Class Programme (22/23). A group of 66 athletes will therefore receive UK Sport National Lottery funding, the aim to help them ahead of World Championships, 2024 European Championships and Olympics. The WCP is split into four categories – Podium; Podium Potential; Relay and Confirmation. British Athletics say that for any athlete nominated for the WCP, they must have “realistic potential and demonstrable performance capability and capacity to make the necessary progress to achieve a medal at least in one of the next two Olympic Games”.

The four Olympic individual medallists from Tokyo 2020 – KEELY HODGKINSON, LAURA MUIR, JOSH KERR and HOLLY BRADSHAW – are unsurprisingly selected in the ‘podium’ category. DINA ASHER-SMITH and KATARINA JOHNSON-THOMPSON, who both suffered heartbreaking injuries in the Japanese capital, are also nominated. The other athletes who will receive ‘podium’ level funding are: ALEX BELL, MATTHEW-HUDSON SMITH, NICK MILLER, DARYLL NEITA, ANDREW POZZI, JAZMIN SAWYERS, CINDY SEMBER and JAKE WIGHTMAN.

23 athletes make up ‘podium potential’, 17 for ‘relays’ and 18 at ‘confirmation’ level. “We look forward to working with the athletes and their coaches, and seeing where the World Class Programme can support them appropriately, and where it can add value to enhance their potential as we look ahead to Budapest, Paris and beyond,” STEPHEN MAGUIRE, Technical Director at UK Athletics, said. “Alongside the success of the Futures programme we are seeing a huge amount of young talent emerging through the system and the standards are continuing to rise as those athletes develop and push on.

“With this introduction of young talent on to the Programme, joining a number of experienced athletes who have or are establishing their ability on the international stage, we will be looking to build on the momentum and success of the 2022 season and take that into the World Athletics Championships in Budapest next year, the Olympic Games in Paris, and looking further ahead, into Los Angeles in 2028. “We’d like to thank UK Sport and the National Lottery for their continued investment in the World Class Programme. Their support is essential to helping our athletes be the best prepared they can be for the biggest competitions.”

These are the athletes below chosen for the Olympic World Class Programme (22/23).

DO YOU FEEL THE NEED FOR SPEED  The following article was published on the Athletics Weekly website recently. Photograph of ZHARNEL HUGHES by MARK SHEARMAN.

The science behind speed is always evolving and here we look at the thoughts, theories and ways of training to consider in the quest for greater velocity. Across all the sprints events – everything else being equal – the fastest athlete over 20m-40m will be the superior performer. Why? They will be able to apply more force into the track surface with greater power, they will have quicker contact times (being more reactive and possessing superior leg stiffness) and they will have greater limb speed (being able to generate greater force in a shorter time). The existing sports science on improving sprint speed (acceleration and maximum velocity), is not always easy to decipher, nor does it provide too many definitive answers. This can leave coaches scratching their heads about how to help their athletes. A prime example of this would be when you try to discover how to make an athlete faster with a search on the PubMed database. Although much research will appear, it doesn’t often actually involve elite sprinters and will revolve around sportsmen and sportswomen from other sports such as football and rugby. However, it is possible to discern some fundamentals and some “let’s try it” findings which coaches and athletes should consider implementing.

Stride length or stride frequency The science behind speed largely focuses on how stride frequency and stride length can be changed to elevate maximum velocity and acceleration. There has also been a focus on the energy system contribution to sprints, the role of the central nervous system and overspeed conditions and how to condition greater speed. At most sprint levels, the emphasis is usually on increasing stride length – at elite level in particular there is not a great difference in terms of how fast male and female sprinters move their legs. However, I need to clarify that this assumes the athlete has good sprint mechanics. If they don’t then this will of course need to be worked on. Indeed, specific technical improvement may be the most important factor when it comes to improving speed. Increasing stride length beyond optimising a sprinter’s technique largely rests on creating more power. When a sprinter’s foot makes contact with the track, he or she will need to convert vertical forces into horizontal ones. Sports science shows that human locomotion is predisposed to creating vertical forces, so converting the “down” into “forward go” becomes fundamental. There is little time to impart force when sprinting as reflected in ground contact time, so it’s not surprising that a lot of thought is going into how to achieve this.

Hips don’t lie Considerable recent sports science and practical anecdotal coach advice has identified that the hip muscles (front and rear) are key to transforming vertical impulses into horizontal ones. I discovered research from around a decade back which focused on Asafa Powell and the size of his hip flexors (the muscles which pull the legs from the rear of the body to the front). In comparison with slower elite sprinters, Powell’s hip flexors were found to be significantly bigger. In this context a specifically trained bigger muscle will be able to exert greater specific power. Most recently US coach KEN CLARK has identified similar through specific biomechanical research – which is grounded in the real sprint world. His research consolidated under the title “Whip from the Hip” considers, for example, thigh angular momentum and how this converts vertical to horizontal force/propulsion. A take-home message here is the importance of specific training of the hips. Coaches should focus on this by working specific sprint drills and to a lesser extent conditioning exercises (using pulley machines in the gym as an example). I use many leg cycle drills where the focus is on the pull of the foot from behind the body to the front through the utilisation of the hips.

Other areas to work on In terms of other sports science looking at sprint muscles it has been identified that the hamstrings and the inner thigh muscles are also very important. In fact research has indicated that it is deficiencies in the strength of these muscles which can differentiate male from female sprinters. This provides reason, then, for coaches of female and male athletes to place a specific focus on these muscles as this will also likely improve sprint speed. Let’s consider the hamstrings, which are often strained in sprinters. They stop the travel of the lower leg in front of the body as they pull the foot back into the track surface ready for foot-strike. The hamstrings undergo a stretch when they do this – known an eccentric muscular action. Sports science has shown that training the hamstrings eccentrically (and more recently isometrically – where there there is no muscular movement) can reduce sprinters’ hamstring injuries and also improve sprint speed. Again, there are specific sprint drills which can do this, as well as loading with pulleys/bands and micro weights.

Further technical thoughts There have been experiments with back-lift when sprinting at maximum velocity. The thought process is that if the heel comes up too high behind the hips then it will not be able to be pulled forward with as much velocity and this will reduce what can be termed the resultant “hammer blow” into the track. Everything being equal, the greater the force “in” the greater the speed “out”.

The Italian job From my investigation of sprinting sports science, research from Italy appears to be largely the most in-depth and interesting. The country has a tradition of really applying sports science to the training of their sprinters – and publishing that work. In terms of my knowledge, this dates back to the days of former Olympic 200m champion PIETRO MENNEA and continues with the current 100m champion MARCELL JACOBS. The earlier research considered the role of stride length and stride frequency and how it was affected by running distance and repetitions. The idea was to discover the optimum methodology for the coach and athlete to follow for each of the sprints. It’s beyond the scope of this article to go into detail but readers with an interest should go to worldathletics.org and source the New Studies in Athletics archive. It’s this sort of detail which, when applied to specific sprinters, could lead them to optimised performance.

Overspeed, science, gadgets and tech Much research indicates that overspeed work. That is, facilitating an athlete being able to run faster than they can do normally – as produced by bungee systems, for example, does not work in the way we thought it would. It is interesting to note, then, how the Italians are finding a way to produce workable, translatable overspeed training. You may have seen on social media JACOBS running behind a car towing a chamber type trailer which minimises wind resistance. I believe they also use OptoJump technology to measure stride-length and contact times when running in this condition. This is a form of overspeed training and is part of the sports science which is being applied to JACOBS, while the Germans also have a system as used by long jump champion MALAIKA MIHAMBO which lifts the athlete as they are being pulled forward at faster than normal sprint speeds. The lifting is designed to allow the sprinter to employ the same mechanics as they would without assistance.

There are also other very high-tech devices being used to push and pull athletes to greater speed, such as the 1080 sprint. These cost as much as a good car! Most of us who coach speed won’t have access to the high-tech devices or the resources the Italians or Germans have poured into some of their sprinters nor the esteemed sports scientists who have made it their mission to produce the fastest of the fast. However, we can learn from their work and apply some of their science to our own coaching. We need to, for example, focus on specific power generation and optimise sprint technique with a focus on the hips. We also need to utilise a highly focused speed training programme which maximises our athletes’ specific responses to speed training.
