HARRY WEBB – Congratulations to HARRY who at the England U15/U17 Championships, won the Under 15 80m Hurdles Bronze Medal (11.64 w-0.4). HARRY has reached the crossroads in his career, as since the English Schools Championships has had one training session. He has been training at Tottenham Hotspurs 3 days a week then either training or playing over the weekend, and it is becoming impossible to compete at elite level at two sports.
His first love is football and his Father TREVOR thinks this will be his last major championships and is so pleased he has come away with a medal, and he cannot thank the club enough over a number of years you provided the best opportunities for both KATIE and HARRY to show off their talents. I will certainly miss the journeys , the excitement, the disappointments and of course their successes.

HARRY joined Shaftesbury in 2018 and started his hurdling career in July 2021 winning his 6 races which included the Southern Championships, ranking him UK No.1. His 80m Hurdles personal best (11.42 w1.8) was achieved at the 2023 English Schools Championships, and is ranked UK No.3.

KATIE sister to HARRY joined Shaftesbury in 2018 and also as an Under 15 that year, won the Discus Silver Medal at the English Schools Championships, and that year was ranked UK No.4. KATIE is at Unviversity now, not throwing at all, but continuing with her netball to a very high level. Played regularly for the 1st team last year as a fresher and was nominated to attend England University trials, wasn’t successful but was good to get recognition in her first year

We wish HARRY and KATIE every success in the years to come. Photograph of them both at the England U15/U17 Championships.

FUTURE MEET UPAfter the last weekends LICC meeting at StoneX Stadium on Sunday, RAY POWELL and DAVE BEDFORD sneaked off to the Greyhound in Hendon for a sneaky half. After a beer or two, the talk got round to our amazing clubs’s nostalgia. DAVE said that he had donated a picture to the wrestlers pub in Highgate, of the first known Shaftesbury picture taken on the 28 October 1922. Which is on page 16, of the clubs Centenary book 1890-1990. We both thought how nice it would be to get the past and present club members, friends and family, volunteers, and everyone who would like a chat about our amazing club. DAVE said he will send through some dates, that are good for him, and hopefully we can pin one down that is good for all. Highgate has 4-5 very good pubs, which are a 5 minute walk from the tube.

WHY BUDAPEST WAS POSSIBLY THE BEST WORLD CHAMPIONSIPS EVER  The following article was published on the Athletics Weekly website recently. Comments by STEVE SMYTHE.

Here is a look at some of the stats from Hungary and the event’s overall success The aim of the athletics organisers in Budapest this month was to stage the greatest ever World Championships, I think they have succeeded. This was my 13th World Championships I have attended as a journalist and my favourite and I can’t see Tokyo topping it in 2025. The athletics was superb with a fine mixture of great dominating champions, shock new winners and final round on the field or last 10-metre changes on the track. The stadium was excellent – just the right size and splendid beside the Danube – and the crowds (despite a lack of home success) and atmosphere were helped by the Fan Zones while the city itself was magnificent. It was too hot, but the Hungarians did a magnificent job. Getting out of Budapest, however, proved harder for many.

The British performance This exceeded all expectations – 10 medals equalled Britain’s best in Stuttgart 1993 and it could have been more with some near misses in fourth and the usually dependable LAURA MUIR and DINA ASHER-SMITH not quite at their very best. It won’t be easy to repeat the same medal success in Paris. JOSH KERR was superb but JAKOB INGEBRIGTSEN was not in his earlier Diamond League form and world two mile record form even though he won the 5000m. NAFI THIAM and a few other missing heptathletes should be back next year but KJT’s second day form does reconfirm what a competitor she is and could be even better in 2024. MATT HUDSON-SMITH could have STEVEN GARDINER and MICHAEL NORMAN to contend with in the 400m and USA’s women are unlikely to be disqualified from the 4x400m in France. The Paris 100m final could be boosted by past championships winners FRED KERLEY and MARCELL JACOBS.

USA easily top the world The United States are the world’s top nation with 12 golds, 8 silvers, 9 bronzes (29 in total) and they had 55 top eight placings. On the points system which determines a nation’s strength (8 for first place down to one point for eighth) the USA scored twice as many points as any other nation. Only Jamaica with their sprints and jumps strength and Kenya with their distance prowess also outscore Britain who had almost twice as many points as the next best European nation Spain for whom 32 of their points came from their walks golds. Britain scored 82 points in Doha and 68 in Eugene so it was a huge step forward in Hungary. Britain’s traditional European rivals, Germany, scored 36 points and had no medals. Poland had just 31 points and only two medals. Despite the Paris Olympics approaching, France got just 29 points and a single medal.

Points table
1 USA 277
2 Jamaica 139
3 Kenya 112
4 GBR 102
5 Ethiopia 96
6 Canada 70
7 Spain 55
8 Australia 51
8 Italy 51
8 Netherlands 51

Who was the top athlete NOAH LYLES was the star male performer with three golds and provided more than just fast sprinting with his persona. MONDO DUPLANTIS was the most dominant winner and is the other big male star.FERMKE BOL won two women’s golds and came close to three as her finish to Budapest proved much better than her day one and her last gasp relay win where she made an astonishing amount up in her final strides was possibly the moment of the championships. However the female athlete of the championships and the year is undoubtedly FAITH KIPYEGON with her world records and dominance. The women’s sprint stardom was shared by SHA’CARRI RICHARDSON (100m and 4x100m gold and 200m bronze) and SHERICKA JACKSON (200m gold, 4x100m silver and 100m bronze). The latter produced what was the performance of the championships with the second fastest 200m of all-time with (21.41).

There was one world record but that was in the mixed relay which has no history and because of its position in the timetable does not include the world’s best 400m runners which is ludicrous.

INGEBRIGTSEN repeated his 1500m silver and 5000m gold from Eugene despite a sore throat even though Norwegian’s dislike of Scots increased. Is it NEIL GOURLEY’S turn to upset them in 2024? You could have probably got long odds that Britain’s only multiple medallists would be relay runners RIO MITCHAM, LEWIS DAVEY and LAVIAI NIELSON rather than the likes of HUDSON-SMITH, HUGHES and ASHER-SMITH. The maddest athlete in Budapest was undoubtedly SIFAN HASSAN. Attempting three events questions anyone sanity but she ran a far too extravagant 1500m heat on the morning of her 10,000m final needlessly winning. In the 25 lap event, she veered wide in the straight to disrupt a fast approaching GUDAF TSEGAY and fell over claiming she was pushed and walked across the line later in 11th. In the 1500m semi final she ran in the fastest heat in history and ran (3:55.48) and then took bronze in the final slightly slower but with a 57 final circuit. The day after her 1500m final she ran her 5000m heat and despite her busy programme and 1:56 800m speed she set a torrid pace in hot conditions which was close on a championships best with (14:32.29) even sprinting at the line to beat KIPYEGON.  She was second a few days later in the 5000m final with a 56 final lap completing her 60 laps of racing in Budapest. However, that wasn’t enough for her as immediately after some of her heats, she was also seen doing some fast 400m intervals!

Performance levels in Budapest The overall standard was incredibly high but there were probably fewer records than anticipated given the fast track and heat and even championships records were not that frequent. What was notable though was the competition was fierce and there seemed to be an unusually high number of final round medal changes or change of leader in the last 20 metres.

The mixed relay, the women’s 100m, 800m, 10,000m, 100m hurdles, triple jump, javelin and 4x400m, the men’s 400m, 5000m, long jump, and discus all featured late changes. It was Championships athletics at it’s very best. At least the drama of day one for the Dutch with the 10,000m and mixed relays were not repeated though. The standard in qualifying was exceptional and numerous records were set in terms of fastest heats and the fastest an athlete has ever failed to make the final.

The level of surprises can often be indicated by the success of the level of the predictions rather than just plain incompetence on my behalf though picking the likes of JACKSON, DUPLANTIS, HOLLOWAY, ROJAS, WARHOLM and BOL etc is not entirely a difficult task requiring great athletics foresight. Even with the many obvious ones, less than half the predicted winners being right suggests more surprises than normal. We did not have winners ANTONIO WATSON and DANIELLE WILLIAMS even in our top eight in our online predictions and we also missed PEREZ from our 35km walk top eight although had her third in the 20km. We only had KATZBERG sixth in the hammer and likewise TAUSANGA in the discus and LYLES was only down for fifth in the 100m and our chosen one KERLEY did not even make the final. There were some minor successes such as the 200m order of LYLES, KNIGHTON, TEBOGO, HUGHES, DE GRASSE and BEDNAREK being very close to what actually happened.

My favourite events in Budapest My British bias comes out here but KERR taking on INGEBRIGTSEN on the final bend and pulling clear and JOHNSON-THOMPSON chasing a superb ANNA HALL in the 800m and tracking her close enough to smash her PB and take gold will live in my memory forever. The biggest medal shock was BEN PATTISON. He was beaten in the British Champs by DAN ROWDEN, only qualifying for the team by finishing second to MAX BURGIN at the very last chance at London and then barely sprinting through to a qualifier in his heat and then advancing from the semis as a fastest loser. He clearly had the talent but his application in the final was a shock to many and the fact it was Britain’s first medal in the event for 36 years added to its achievement. HODGKINSON’S 800m was more anticipated but it was great she finally was able to overtake ATHING MU although there was a tinge of disappointment with ZHARNEL HUGHES and MATTHEW HUDSON-SMITH despite their magnificent performances as they had looked more impressive in qualifying. HUDSON-SMITH could have won with a slightly slower first 200m than 21.1 following his European record in the semis and Hughes was not able to quite match his New York form but both had exceptional championships.

The final legs of all four medal winning relays where the British teams defied expectations without their best runners were also thrilling. The mixed team could have been stronger and the men’s and women’s team missed their fastest runners from the individual events but those who ran all rose to the occasion. The fighting spirit was best summed up by RIO MITCHAM holding off and running away from individual champion ANTONIO WATSON with a (43.89) split which defies all logic for someone with a (45.60) PB whose best 400m in July and August was (46.90). Britain also got a medal in the women’s 4x100m without double finalist ASHER-SMITH. JESS JUDD’S eighth may have only added one point to the British points total but that too was way in excess of what anyone predicted as was the efforts of DARYLL NEITA, MOLLY CAUDERY and KATIE SNOWDEN. Away from the Brits, BOL and WARHOLM’S well-judged 400m hurdles were impressive as they left the opposition behind in the straight and Kipyegon’s 56sec last circuits in the 1500m and 5000m were exceptional but my favourite race with an international winner was EL BAKKALI’S battle with world record-holder GIRMA in the steeplechase. He ran a last 800m of (1:58.14) over eight barriers and two water jumps and he eased off to celebrate! CHEPTEGEI’S control – Mo-style – in the 10,000m was also majestic as were the superb throws victories for RYAN CROUSER and DANIEL STAHL which were both the best world championship performances in history and MILTADIS TENTOGLOU fought magnificently in a final round long jump contest.

Defending a title is not easy Of the 49 champions from Eugene only 14 successfully defended (CHEPTEGEI, EL BAKKALI, HOLLOWAY, CROUSER, KIPYEGON, MOON, LYLES, JACKSON, ROJAS, DUPLANTIS, EALEY, USA (women’s 4x100m and men’s 4x400m) and INGEBRIGTSEN and eight did not compete for various reasons (PICHARDO, MIHAMBO, THIAM, Dominican Republic (mixed 4x400m), WIGHTMAN, NORMAN, MCLAUGHLIN. JERUTO) and 27 who did compete were unable to add to their victories.

World Athletics’ performance The World Athletics website had record numbers as did its social media postings but it’s not a sign that athletics is in full control of itself if it has to close down part of the World Athletics website every night as it couldn’t cope with demand. Its scheduling was still in poor in places (mixed relay etc) and I don’t understand why MAHUCHIKH’S final high jump attempt couldn’t have come before the 4x400m relay rather than after so the Championships could have ended with a glorious relay leg rather than a failed high jump. And why have a relatively low profile event such as the women’s steeplechase on the last day which is always the most watched session? On the plus side, the athletics was glorious and the qualifying by time rather than places and the scrapping of fastest losers worked for distances of 1500m and above. The thought that it might mean slow jogs before effective 400m races was not a problem. In the 1500m ADELLE TRACEY ran (3:58.77) and TSEPHO TSHITE ran (3:32.98) and didn’t even make the final when those sort of times would have easily have made all previous finals but if you can’t make the top six in your semi, then you are probably not going to make the top six in the final!

World Athletics’ timing partner Seiko were appalling. There were more mistakes in Seiko’s results timing analysis in Budapest than in all the previous 30-plus major championships events I have attended put together over the last 40 years. According to Seiko, 400m winner ANTONIO WATSON was a tailed off last at 200m and did not go through the 300m mark and DINA ASHER-SMITH bypassed the 100m mark in the 200m. The timing company suggests that FAITH KIPYEGON dropped from first to tenth at 1100m and was back to first at 1200m. I missed that. Timings were wrong in all men’s 1500m final runners at the bell bar the leader which resulted in fictitious last lap times being even included in World Athletics report – it suggests the Scots drive from 800m onwards  consists of 100m splits of (13.55), (13.72), (14.52), (12.97), (13.25), (12.93) and (13.62). Two of those boldoned are wrong and he was not six metres back at the bell. The mixed 4x400m splits were originally hopelessly wrong and on the wrong information some teams mistakenly changed their teams for the final. They did at least correct the results a few days later. In the men’s 4x100m SEYE OGUNLEWE was credited with a (8.05) anchor leg and in the 4x400m heats SHAKEEM MCKAY apparently ran (39.54). Nobody in Seiko thought that might be wrong. The poor quality control by Seiko and World Athletics was prevalent throughout the championships but after some criticism their response was not to improve but just not release any 4x400m splits on the final day though some have been provided by a different unofficial but accurate source and will be included in AW’s results.

BETH POTTER WINS PARIS 2024 TEST EVENT – The following was reported on the BBC sport website.

BETH POTTER out-sprinted home favourite CASSANDRE BEAUGRAND to secure victory in the Paris 2024 triathlon test event. It was the Scot’s first-ever win in an Olympic-distance race. It leaves the 31-year-old top of the standings before October’s World Triathlon Championship Series Finals in Spain.

The swim leg of the event took place in the River Seine after it passed water quality tests. Earlier this month, World Aquatics cancelled the Open Water Swimming World Cup in the river after it was ruled to be “below acceptable standards.” POTTER and BEAUGRAND broke clear with about 5km to go in the run before POTTER made her decisive move on the last corner to finish six seconds ahead of her rival in one hour 51 minutes and 40 seconds, with German LAURA LINDEMANN in third a further three seconds behind.

“I was just trying to run fast at the end. I’m glad I had something left in the tank to be honest,” said POTTER, who ran the 10,0000m on the track at the 2016 Olympics. “I was biding my time and I had in my head I was going to wait until the last moment. I enjoyed every moment of it. This was my main goal for the season and I ticked it off, so I’m super happy.”

1st BETH POTTER (1:51.40) – Swim 5000m (20.17) – Transition 1 (.51) – Bike 40km (57.07) – Transition 2 (.29) – Run 10km (32.57)
2nd CASSANDRE BEAUGRAND (1:51.46) – Swim 5000m (19.52) – Transition 1 (.56) – Bike 40km (57.25) – Transition 2 (.27) – Run 10km (33.07)
3rd LAURA LINDEMANN (1:51.59) – Swim 5000m (19.57) – Transition 1 (.58) – Bike 40km (57.18) – Transition 2 (.29) – Run 10km (33.18)

CURRENT DISTRIBUTION OF SHAFTESBURY INFORMATION Currently I notify members (by email) using “MailChimp”. The reason I changed, was in November 2017 “Gmail” put a limit of 100 addresses that users could send to in a 24-hour period, and currently I send to approximately 850 members each issue.

On seeking technical advice “MailChimp” was recommended as the best way for SBH to go forward. There is one thing you should be aware off is that when you receive an email from me, the footer at the bottom has 4 options, of which one is “Unsubscribe Me From List”. Could I ask you not to select this as if you do you will be automatically removed from my distribution list.

Our first event on 7 August featured RUBEN HEDMAN and JOSEPH PUBRICK in the 110m Hurdles. In RUBEN’S race he sustained a hamstring injury (grade 1 tear) which was painful as he raced but he did his best to get over the finish line. There is one thing you should be aware off is that when you receive an email from me, the footer at the bottom has 4 options, of which one is “Unsubscribe Me From List”. JUNIOR STARS SET TO SHINE AT EUROPEAN U20 CHAMPIONSHIPS IN JERUSALEM  The following article was published on the Athletics Weekly website recently.

Who will emerge from the class of 2023 as the most impressive under-20 athletes of their generation?. The World Championships in Budapest kick off later this month but if you want to gaze into a crystal ball to catch your first glimpse of the world champions of the future then keep an eye on the European Under-20 Championships in Jerusalem. The event runs from August 7-10 and is set to feature around 1150 athletes from 44 nations. Former champions at these championships include JAKOB INGEBRIGTSEN, DALEY THOMPSON, CAROLINA KLUFF, YELENA ISINBAYEVA, JESSICA ENNIS-HILL, KARSTEN WARHOLM, DINA ASHER-SMITH and many more who went on to be global stars. It is 60 years since the event began in the shape of the European Junior Games held in Warsaw in 1964. The biennial meeting was known as the European Junior Championships from 1970 to 2015 and since then has been called the European Under-20 Championships.

This week’s event will return to the same city that staged last year’s European Under-18 Championships – and of course many of the athletes who competed at there in 2022 will return to battle for medals again. This is also the first European Under-20 Championships since 2021, when the event was staged in Tallinn. Back then Britain topped the medals table with six golds, one silver and five bronze medals in total and they will be hoping for similar success in Jerusalem this month.

We are represented by EMILY NEWNHAM, who at the UK Championships in Manchester, won the 400m Hurdles Bronze Medal with a new Club Record (57.13) which ranks her UK No.1 U20 400m Hurdler in 2023. EMILY broke her second club record in the last 2 weeks, this time the Under 20 400m record, when winning the Silver Medal at the England Senior Championships (52.15) in Chelmsford on 23 July. EMILY will be competing in Jerusalem in the 400m Hurdles and the 4x400m Relay.

Next are our 2 UK ranked U20 110m Hurdlers in 2023, JOSEPH PURBRICK who is ranked UK No.3 and RUBEN HEDMAN ranked UK No.4. JOSEPH set a new Club Record (13.70 w0.3) in Loughborough on 21 June, and RUBEN set a new personal best (13.76 w-3.1) in Bromley on 25 June. Therefore the 110m Hurdles in Jerusalem looks like it going to be a close event.

LOOK BACK TO 1982 – Many thanks to GRAHAM GETTY who sent me these 3 pages from the 17 April 1982 edition of Athletics Weekly.

The course at Wimbledon Common was excellent for viewing, and for those who did not have the inclination to jog round, there was a superb pub near the start/finish line. I cannot remember its name, but I am sure DAVE BEDFORD could fill in the gap.

The article makes superb reading, and we had an untold amount of supporters including myself. Of the 12 Men, 5 are still members of SBH – SIMON KEENE, STEVE LOWE, STUART MOORE, RICHARD SAMUEL and DAVE THOMPSON. In the photograph is PAT COLLINS and along with ANDY BEATTIE they have both passed away.

MEET THE MAN IN CHARGE OF BRINGING ATHLETICS BACK TO CRYSTAL PALACE  The following article was published on the Athletics Weekly website recently. Photograph taken by MARK SHEARMAN.

We speak exclusively to BEN WOODS, the person given the task of now leading the redevelopment of the historic south London sports arena. The man who helped rebuild the Alexander Stadium in Birmingham has now got Crystal Palace in his sights. BEN WOODS, part of the team that helped deliver the 2022 Commonwealth Games, was chosen by SADIQ KHAN to be Project Director at the Greater London Authority (GLA) for the redevelopment of Crystal Palace, a role that he has now been in since January 2023. He was Head of Capital Projects for Birmingham 2022 in the Department for Culture, Media & Sport (DCMS) from early 2018 until the end of last year. WOODS’ aim was to deliver the capital infrastructure programme of works on both the Alexander Stadium and Sandwell Aquatics Centre. His current project, however, is even closer to home. WOODS was born near Crystal Palace and watched world class athletics in the stadium as a child. AW sits down with the man that many hope can help bring athletics back to Crystal Palace.

What does Crystal Palace mean to you  I grew up around here in Upper Norwood and this was my local sports centre as a kid. I swam here, ran on the track and watched events here, so this project is as much to do with my heart as it is my head. Even today I live relatively local and bring my kids down around the park. I see such history and potential going forward. It’s the only show in town and we should all strive to see it looking good again.

How do you reflect on its history  The unique thing about Crystal Palace is that the centre is a multi-sport venue and it has sheer range and depth of sports. We’re focusing on athletics but we also have swimming, the indoor and outdoor sports. You don’t have that anywhere else and it’s right in the heart of London. We have to embrace its uniqueness and this is a well-renowned stadium. I went to a few of those Grand Prix meetings dating back to the 1980s. STEVE CRAM was one of my heroes as a kid and then you’ve got the likes of MERLENE OTTLEY and MICHAEL JOHNSON in the 1990s up to the JESSICA ENNIS HILL. I’d love to get DINA ASHER-SMITH back here for example running in this stadium. It’s always had that pathway from community to elite sport as well. Even today, we’re not working from scratch. There’s still a lot of fantastic events and a network of clubs and coaches. We have to build from that base.

How do you compare what you saw in the 1980s to what you see now There’s no denying that [Crystal Palace] needs a lot of TLC and major investment. There is capital funding available and we’re not talking about the patch and repair that it’s had over the last 20-30 years, we’re talking about comprehensive refurbishment.  This is a once in a generation chance. We need to get it right when upgrading these facilities.  The Mayor has the aspiration to make London the most active city and the sporting capital of the world for events. The fact that the GLA own Crystal Palace means that this is a chance to practice what we preach. A team has been built under the GLA and I am a piece of that jigsaw. Consultants have already been brought on board. Funding is in place and now it’s about moving forward. People have heard stories and masterplans around Crystal Palace before, so one of the things that I was very keen on was to get started on the early works. It’s a complex project. The listed building requires detailed planning permission and that will take a number of years with a contractor onsite. In the interim, what can we do around the stadium? We’ve got people training down here but the track is uncertified. Let’s repair it and get it certified. Let’s get the floodlighting back. That’s the visual change that we need to do in the early days.

What’s the timeline from where we are now and what can be done regarding that visual change  We’ve got to set a vision for this place. The number one fundamental point is that athletics is staying at Crystal Palace, come what may. All of this has to be underpinned by a viable business plan and right now we’re in listening mode. I saw in the last issue of AW there was a piece on “what is the future of athletics events?” That’s the sort of question that we are asking around Crystal Palace. We’ve got the stage and now how do we use it? That’s the long-term vision. In the short-term, can we do things that don’t inhibit what’s going on now but makes life a lot more pleasant for athletes? Yes. We are talking to floodlighting companies. We are trying to get planning in to make sure that floodlights are in place for this winter. We are talking to track specialists and there’s a difference from patch and repair to a class one World Athletics track.

Are there specific dates in mind for both the short-term and long-term visions  We know this is at least a five-year programme to develop all facilities [stadium and centre]. This is also a live park and we don’t want to close it so it’s about phasing the facilities. The first part of the phasing will be the main centre. We’ve got to get that swimming pool working and making the centre work in a sustainable way. Then we’ll flip to the stadium and then the rest of the estate. But are we going to leave the stadium for the next three of four years before the diggers arrive? No. That’s the whole purpose of having short and long-term options. Those short-term options include track certification, floodlighting, the indoor track, the changing rooms and improving the west stand.

What’s your response to the people that need to see it to believe it  I absolutely get that. I don’t want a masterplan sitting on a shelf in five years time. Everything that I have worked on in my career has been built. I love the construction process which means giving back to the community. The early works are about getting a bit of life and belief back down at Crystal Palace. I understand the cynicism but ultimately the proof will be in the pudding. Let’s chat in a year and look back at those visual works.

How important is Crystal Palace’s USP of being able to create noise and fast times  The venue is dug into a hill so it’s a natural amphitheatre and the wind is reduced so both the spectators and athletes love it. It’s always been a fast track. Could we get safe standing into Crystal Palace? It’s always struck me when I’ve been to events here before when there has been a great pole vault and long jump completion for example and I can’t see both. That’s the nature of athletics sometimes. So are there ways where you have a cricket approach and you can walk round the stadium towards specific events? We don’t have a major [athletics] event down here at the moment but there is potential. What I love about this venue is that everything, from the pool and gym to courts and tracks, are so close to each other. That’s not the case in places like Birmingham, Sheffield or Glasgow. It can suck in so much talent in such a small area and that’s its biggest USP.

When we talk about inspiring the next generation, what does that mean to you, and what Crystal Palace offers as a dedicated athletics venue in London  If you were an alien and were dropped into any sports centre in London, Crystal Palace is the perfect one. You’ve got the intersection of five London Boroughs for here. The potential to draw people in here is immense. We’ve got excellent transport links with four lines to central London and the outreach to Kent and Sussex. It’s in the perfect spot. The amount of athletes this area breeds and has bred, we should be celebrating that. The range of sports and athletes, what’s not to like?

How do you use your experience of working on the Commonwealth Games for Crystal Palace  We had a fantastic team and we went with the mantra from London 2012 which was ‘design for legacy, overlay for Games’. It really was the principle for the Commonwealth Games. How does the legacy for the Alexander Stadium work for the next 20 years and beyond? It’s not too big or small but we can also add the temporary stands again for things like the 2026 European Championships. We deliberately focused on the long-term.

What are the ambitions for the next year  In practical terms, I’d like to see real tangible improvements. That’s everything from clearing the weeds to getting floodlights up and the track certified. I want the longer-term vision to be consulted on, looked at with stakeholders, and for that to happen we need to have that business plan. Once we have that viable case and the application for planning is something that works, we go from there. Then the next year is about procurement and finding the right contractor. A year after that? Works onsite. It’s not just about the sport but the financial sustainability of Crystal Palace. We want to look back and think we are set here for the next 20, 30, 40 years.

STREAMLINED BRITISH TEAM ANNOUNCED FOR BUDAPEST – The following article was published on the Athletics Weekly website recently.

UK Athletics Technical Director STEPHEN MAGUIRE says he has “no issues” with the streamlined Great Britain and Ireland team which has been selected to compete at next month’s World Athletics Championships in Budapest. A total of 51 athletes have met what many feel to have been a particularly strict criteria, with some additions to be made next week when World Athletics send out their invitations based on rankings. The sport’s governing body in Britain will not be accepting all of those invitations, however, as they follow a selection policy which is based on an athlete’s ability to hit a certain standard, prove their form, then challenge for the top eight of an event or to be in medal contention at world level. A number of athletes who are due to receive invitations have spoken out in recent days with dismay that they will not be given the chance to compete, with some even threatening legal action or even suggesting they would self-fund their way to Hungary.

MAGUIRE insists, however, that taking a smaller team – 77 went to last year’s championships in Oregon – matches the “clarity” of criteria which was announced some months ago. “I have no issues with that at all when it comes down to the clarity of what we’re trying to do,” he said of the team size. “It’s about the ability to make a final and the ability to challenge for a medal. There are standards we have set in place, and form is a big one, so I’m happy with the squad. The crossbar has been raised and I think it’s a nice, strong squad. “There’s an awareness of the policy there. I think it is fair for me to recognise that athletes will be hurt because they haven’t made standards and they’ll see it as tough standards. The world and Olympic standards are tough. [But] I think our policy is really clear.”

HOW TO THROW THE DISCUS  The following article was published on the Athletics Weekly website recently. Photographsof SANDRA PERKOVIC taken by MARK SHEARMAN.

Double Olympic and world champion SANDRA PERKOVIC explains the intricacies of one of the oldest athletics disciplines. First of all, the rules. Athletes throw a metal disc weighing 2kg for men (22cm in diameter) and 1kg (18cm in diameter) for women, as far as possible while remaining inside a 2.5-metre diameter circle. In order for the throw to be measured, the discus must land inside a marked sector and the athlete must not leave the circle before it has landed. The athlete must also only leave from the rear half of the circle.

How did you start I started doing athletics when I was about eight years old but was also playing basketball and volleyball. What I liked about athletics is that it is an individual sport – it was up to you if you succeeded, it did not depend on how your team-mates played. Five years later I was in a multi-event and it came down to the last event between two of us, throwing a ball. The other girl threw 42m and I threw 58m. That was the moment I decided I wanted to be a thrower. I tried hammer and shot but, the first time I picked up a discus, I knew that was my event.

How do you throw a discus First, clean any dirt off it, step into the circle, focus on your technique. There are different throwing techniques. Everyone takes the one that is best for them and the one they can control. Throwers typically take one-and-a-half spins before releasing the discus. I have built and refined my technique over the years. Each athlete needs to choose the technique that fits their abilities – whether they are fast, technically strong, powerful etc. With experience, as you release the discus from the hand, you know how good the throw is.

How important is the size of a person Traditionally discus throwers are tall because being taller often means longer arms which generate more power. But now, with different techniques – reverse or not [reverse means a right-handed thrower would deliver the discus with the left foot forward and the right foot back and vice versa] – size is less important. I remember ROBERT FAZEKAS, the Hungarian discus thrower, who won gold in the 2002 European Championships and silver in the 2003 world championships. He was short but still threw over 70m. Men’s world champion] KRISTJAN CEH is very tall but also compact. Some tall people look a bit dislocated but CEH is tall and normal. On the other hand, Cuba has great discus throwers but they are not so tall. Tall is good but it is not the only thing.

How do you generate power It is a combination of strength, technique and power but every athlete will have their own speciality. Some are fast, others are slower but stronger – some are technically very good. Some athletes look slow but if you try to copy their technique it is actually very fast! You need speed, technique, strength and add height. You need to combine them to the maximum to get the best individual throw.

How do you produce consistency The most important thing is to really enjoy it. It is my job but it feels like a hobby.  I sometimes say that I smile when I throw and, when I stop smiling, I will know it is time to stop. You have to work hard and also avoid being injured. To be number one and stay number one you are walking on the edge. Your whole life needs to be professional – eating right, including vitamins, taking time for recovery. I have also found that visualisations help. You also need to keep refreshing your training because, if you do the same thing for 12 years, you will get sick of it!

Coaching It is also important to have a coach who understands you and that you have good and bad days. Some days you want to go to the moon, other days you don’t want to get out of bed! At this stage of my career it is important to have a coach who knows me and understands me and knows how to make me better. I am always pushing and always wanting more. The coach needs to help me get the balance and to know when to push me and when to stop me. I need to trust his judgment and believe him if he says something is good, even if I don’t think it is. The coach needs to control the athlete and to keep finding ways of helping the athlete achieve what they are trying to achieve.

Keep learning We have a saying in Croatia: “You think you know everything but you still die stupid!” You might think your technique is very good but every day is an opportunity to improve it. Nothing is perfect so you need to push yourself every day to find improvements. You need to motivate yourself, push yourself and believe in yourself

Success It is less about beating an opponent than about performing to a level that I am satisfied with. I give maximum effort and I want the maximum to be returned.

The best moment The best adrenalin rush is when you have one throw left – to win – or qualify for the final.  You have one chance and have to find the big throw.  Money can buy you many things but not moments like that.

Strategy All you need to win a discus competition is two throws – one to get into the final and one to win. You need to be able to manage the situation and produce the throw you are capable of when you need it. At a championship, ideally you want to qualify for the final with your first throw and not waste energy.

What causes fouls Sometimes fouls happen just because the circle is a bit slippery or because you are rushing your technique. At the Rio Olympics, I won the gold medal but had five fouls and only one legal throw. I was so ready for that competition. The year had gone so well and I was throwing further than I expected to but in Rio I couldn’t control it. That day I was too powerful. I needed my arms to be longer!

Training I am working on technique every day. Strength work is done mainly in winter and pre-season because you need time for recovery. During the season you are fitting training into travel and competition but you could say that I am doing a little bit of work on all aspects every week of the year.

Are you always giving 100 per cent effort My main motivation is to satisfy myself and be proud of myself so I find it hard not to give 100 per cent, even if I am way ahead of second place. The only exception is if the qualifying distance is such that you can achieve it with a safe throw. I have found that, if I over-think it, that is not good. It is better for me just to throw and do my job. There are times when it is different because of where you are in the season or if you don’t want to take a risk close to the Olympics or World Championships. In the Rio Olympics, I had started with two fouls so, on that third throw I could not risk giving 100 per cent, as I needed a legal throw to make the final.

THE WORLD 80M RECORD THAT HAS STOOD THE TEST OF TIME  The following article was published on the Athletics Weekly website recently. Photographs of JARMILA KRATOCHVILOVA taken by MARK SHEARMAN.

JARMILA KRATOCHVILOVAS 800m mark of (1:53.28) was set 40 years ago, but rather than being celebrated it is mired in controversy. On July 26 in 1983, JARMILA KRATOCHVILOVA arrived at the Olympiapark Meeting in Munich’s Olympic Stadium as a 400m specialist with intentions of testing her speed over 200m. After a touch of cramp, though, she decided to switch to running the 800m. Her subsequent time of 1:53.28 sent shockwaves through the sport and now, 40 years later, it remains the oldest outdoor world record in the book. The performance persuaded the Czech athlete to attempt an audacious 400m and 800m double at the inaugural World Championships in Helsinki the following month. Such was her form, she pulled it off, with 800m victory in (1:54.68) followed by a 400m world record of (47.99), although the latter was beaten two years later by her great rival, MARITA KOCH of East Germany, who ran a time of (47.60) in Australia which still stands as the fastest mark in history. Both records are considered virtually untouchable. Some have described the marks as “toxic” with accusations of doping. Whereas the state-organised programme of East Germany is well documented, the situation is not as clear in the former Czechoslovakia, however, although there is evidence that a “specialized care” system existed for athletes, with doping likely.

KRATOCHVILOVA, who is now 72, has always denied knowingly taking drugs. Instead, herself and her coach, MIROSLAV KVAC, insisted the performances were down lots of physical work during her upbringing on a farm, huge amounts of weight training and large amounts of vitamin B12. When there have been suggestions in the past to scrap these old world records, KRATOCHVILOVA has reacted angrily. “Complete nonsense,” she said in 2017. “I have never taken banned substances.” Reacting to criticism of her muscled physique, she added: “When you work as hard as I did, you have to sacrifice some of your looks. The women of the West don’t work as hard as I did.” According to reports at the time, KRATOCHVILOVA was so motivated that she trained at 4am and refused to have an afternoon rest. There are stories of her sprinting in spikes on a frozen pond when her local cinder track was covered in snow in the winter and, when once recovering from Achilles surgery, KRATOCHVILOVA ran repetitions through a foot of water in a pool wearing a weighted vest and put a gas mask on to restrict her breathing.

During her career she broke 24 Czech records from 100m to 800m. In her early years she focused on shorter sprints but won 400m silver at the 1980 Moscow Olympics and 1982 European Championships in Athens behind KOCH. The 800m world record that she broke in 1983 was held by NADEZHDA OLIZARENKO, who ran (1:53.43) to win gold for the host nation at the 1980 Olympics. While our eyes are drawn to KRATOCHVILOVAS enduring performance, incidentally, it’s worth remembering that the Czech athlete only improved the Soviet runner’s record by 15 hundredths of a second and yet OLIZARENKO is a largely forgotten figure due to her mark only lasting three years. In the run-up to the World Championships in Helsinki in 1983, it was known that KOCH was focusing on shorter sprints and relays. This also influenced KRATOCHVILOVAS plan to tackle the 400m and 800m double and in the Finnish capital the 32-year-old Czech negotiated a tough schedule to claim two golds.

Trickiest of all was Tuesday August 9 when she won her 400m semi-final in (51.08) and the 800m final in (1:54.68) just 35 minutes later, although AW’s coverage at the time suggests there was as little as 24 minutes between her leaving the track after the 400m and returning for the 800m. Then, the following day, she passed 200m in (23.2) before clocking (47.99) in the 400m final to beat KOCH’S world record of (48.16). The next year KRATOCHVILOVA missed the Olympics due to the Eastern Bloc boycott of the LA Games. She battled on for another three years but retired after finishing fifth in the world 800m final in 1987. “It’s a definitely a record a lot of people have suspected,” said British record-holder KEELY HODGKINSON when asked about KRATOCHVILOVAS recently. “It’s a very remarkable record. Whether it will be broken in my lifetime, I don’t know. I’m still two-and-a-half seconds away from that. “In our sport it’s medals that can’t be taken away so they’re the main priority. If anyone was to get close to it such as myself or anyone else, it would be quite an amazing feat.” If there is hope it will one day fall, though, then consider this. KRATOCHVILOVAS also held the world indoor 400m record with (49.59) for 41 years but FEMKE BOL of the Netherlands improved it to (49.26) earlier this year.

CAN YOU HELP PLEASEI would welcome any contributions From Yourselves, any impending marriages, or additions to the family, any running or competing incidents, also past warm weather training/holidays (No Club 24 please). Currently the response has been excellent, but if you have anything that could make it into next week’s Newsletter – please email me.
