Happy Birthday from Thursday 1 May to Wednesday 7 May – Jane Dixon, Farrah Georgeides, Andrew Li, Scott Lincoln, Tim Saunders-Mullins, Anne Ridley and Gregory Thompson,
HELP WANTED – PARENTS – we need your help to ensure your child can compete at all their events this season!
Volunteering to help on the track or field at just a couple of our home and away fixtures in 2025, will give us certainty early on that the meetings can go ahead. It’s a fun way to be involved on the day, you will still be free to watch your child’s events, lunches and refreshments are always provided at our home fixtures and at most away ones too.
Please contact either GERALD ALTERMAN or ROSALIND ZEFFERTT for further information or complete this form SBH 2025 Summer Availability.

RESULTS
Just to clarify, that the results I publish can be different to those that are shown on the Power of 10. The differences relate to seasons and personal best performances. For example in the recent EYAL results, an athlete in the 200m ran (24.1), and on his profile his season’s best was shown as (23.88) indoors. As the 200m indoors and outdoors are totally different type of events, I had shown the (24.1) as a season’s best. Regarding Master athletes any personal best performances relate to their current age-groups, as Club Records for Masters age-groups are in 5 year periods.

MINI MARATHON PHOTO WORTH A THOUSAND WORDS – The following article was published on the Athletics Weekly website recently. Photograph of BEN DIJKSTRA (3040), JAMAL LEWIS (3012) and ALEX YEE (1113) taken by MARK SHEARMAN
ALEX YEE and BEN DIJKSTRA were beaten by future footballer JAMAL LEWIS on The Mall in 2013 with EMILE CAIRESS and JOSH KERR well down the field. Like many British marathon runners in London this weekend, ALEX YEE’S long-distance love affair with the race began as a teenager in the Mini event. The Olympic triathlon champion didn’t have it all his own way back in 2013, though, with victory in the under-15 boys race at Mini London Marathon instead going to JAMAL LEWIS former member of Shaftesbury Barnet Harriers. If a picture is worth a thousand words then MARK SHEARMAN’S image at the top of this article certainly falls into that category.
Winner that day by three seconds in (15:04), LEWIS went on to play football as a left back for Norwich City and Newcastle United in addition to earning 36 caps for Northern Ireland. Runner-up behind LEWIS – and also ahead of YEE – was BEN DIJKSTRA (pictured just to the left of Lewis’s right shoulder). Like YEE, he moved into triathlon – and may have enjoyed similar success if it weren’t for injury – but as a teenager he enjoyed tremendous success on the cross country circuit, featuring on the cover of AW after winning one of his multiple English Schools titles. YEE was of course no slouch as a teenage runner either, finishing seven seconds behind DIJKSTRA ( that day in London before going on to win Olympic triathlon gold in Paris 11 years later. There were quite a few interesting names well behind him in London, too.
They included EMILE CAIRESS in ninth, HUGO MILNER in 10th and MAHAMED MAHAMED in 21st. CAIRESS was top Brit in London last year, of course, before finishing fourth in the Olympic marathon in Paris. Milner has excelled on the cross-country circuit in recent winters in addition to making his mark in triathlon, whereas MAHAMED was fourth in London last year and will be aiming for a similar performance this weekend. Even further behind, a certain JOSH KERR placed a modest 47th. Yet just 10 years later he would outkick JACOB INGEBRIGTSEN to win the world 1500m title in Budapest.
Looking through old results from events like the Mini London Marathon is endlessly fascinating. The English Schools Championships, which celebrates its 100th anniversary this year, is another similar event where future stars are literally running, jumping and throwing in every corner of the stadium, but you don’t realise just how great they are until some years later.
Just one of many examples is MARO ITOJE, who is making headlines right now as England rugby captain. As a teenage shot putter, though, he finished runner-up in the English Schools twice. My favourite all-time example, however, is BOB ANDERSON, who won English Schools javelin gold in 1963 before picking up a ‘miniature spear’ to become world darts champion in 1988.
LONDON ENTERS RACE TO STAGE 2029 WORLD ATLETIC CHAMPIONSHIPS – The following article was published on the Athletics Weekly website recently.
UK Athletics believes a successful bid will create an economic and social impact of more than £400 million. London will make a formal bid to stage the 2029 World Athletics Championships and, if successful, it will bring the event to Britain for the first time since 2017. UK Sport and the Mayor of London together with Athletic Ventures – the joint venture between UK Athletics (UKA), Great Run Company and London Marathon Events – has completed a feasibility study which projects a record-breaking economic and social impact of more than £400 million through its innovative plans for the 2029 event. The previous World Championships in London in 2017 had a sold-out stadium for every session and it’s hoped the 2029 event will be similarly successful.
The bid for the 2029 event is heavily dependent, however, on securing £45 million in government support for delivery with The Times reporting earlier this month that the quest for funding is an “uphill battle” and the bid will be “dead in the water” if not achieved. If The Times proves to be correct, there will be shades of Picketts Lock in 2001. Back then, UKA was due to stage the World Championships in London but the Government withdrew its financial support and tried to convince the IAAF to hold the event in Sheffield before plans were abandoned entirely. Completing the feasibility study for 2029, though, is an important step on the way to making a formal bid. In addition, UKA does have a fine record when it comes to succeeding in bids for major events.
Dame DENISE LEWIS, President of UKA, who was part of the team that secured the 2017 Championships bid in Monaco in 2011, says: “London 2017 showed the world what this city and this country can do. It was an incredible example of how we can unite behind a vision — full stadiums, global energy and a lasting impact. I was proud to help bring that event to life, and I know we can do it again in 2029.” Back in 2011, UKA put huge effort into winning the bid for 2017.
This year’s TCS London Marathon has provided the perfect springboard for launching the 2029 bid. With an estimated 750,000 spectators and an anticipated economic impact exceeding £250 million, the marathon continues to London’s reputation for delivering world-class events. “It’s a powerful reminder of what this city — and this country — can achieve,” said LEWIS. “Global sporting events generate far more than just medals — they ignite economies, inspire communities, and shine a light on everything we have to offer as a nation.”
The bid for 2029 comes as part of a wider vision to redefine how major international events are delivered in the country. At the heart of the proposal is Athletic Ventures, a pioneering new model that combines commercial backing with a strong emphasis on community engagement and long-term legacy. “Where a traditional World Championships in London might generate around £150 million in economic value,” LEWIS explained. “Athletic Ventures is aiming to nearly triple that — projecting a combined economic and social impact of more than £400 million.” The London 2029 campaign is designed not only to deliver a successful World Championships but also to extend benefits nationwide. This weekend alone, more than 16,000 children participated in the TCS Mini London Marathon, with thousands more taking part in their schools across the UK. Athletic Ventures believes that the timing of the bid aligns with the government’s current emphasis on economic growth and investment in infrastructure. “We’re not just planning a championship — we’re shaping a new model for delivering major events in this country,” said LEWIS. “One designed to create long-term impact and lasting return.”
LEWIS, the 2000 Olympic heptathlon champion, adds: “To stand on the podium is one of the greatest honours in sport. But to do it in front of a home crowd? That’s a rare and remarkable opportunity. It’s something we want to offer to the next generation of British athletes.” With Birmingham set to host the European Athletics Championships in 2026, Athletic Ventures sees London 2029 as the natural next step in reaffirming the UK’s leadership in world athletics. “Athletics remains the beating heart of the Olympic Games,” said LEWIS, recalling recent and historic British triumphs. “From KEELY HODGKINSON’S stunning 800m gold last summer, to Super Saturday in 2012 when JESS ENNIS-HILL, MO FARAH and GREG RUTHERFORD lit up the nation — these aren’t just memories, they are milestones that inspire generations.” On receiving the necessary financial backing from the Government, LEWIS adds: “Yes, these are challenging times. “But it’s precisely in moments like these that sport can lift us — economically, socially, emotionally. With the right backing, we can create a World Athletics Championships in 2029 that leaves a legacy to be proud of.”
