Volunteering to help on the track or field at just a couple of our home and away fixtures in 2025, will give us certainty early on that the meetings can go ahead. It’s a fun way to be involved on the day, you will still be free to watch your child’s events, lunches and refreshments are always provided at our home fixtures and at most away ones too.

Please contact either GERALD ALTERMAN or ROSALIND ZEFFERTT for further information or complete this form SBH 2025 Summer Availability.

RESULTS
Just to clarify, that the results I publish can be different to those that are shown on the Power of 10. The differences relate to seasons and personal best performances. For example in the recent EYAL results, an athlete in the 200m ran (24.1), and on his profile his season’s best was shown as (23.88) indoors. As the 200m indoors and outdoors are totally different type of events, I had shown the (24.1) as a season’s best. Regarding Master athletes any personal best performances relate to their current age-groups, as Club Records for Masters age-groups are in 5 year periods.

SHAFTESBURY BARNET HARRIERS IS 135 YEARS OLD THIS YEAR  The club was founded in 1890, then we amalgamated with Barnet Ladies in autumn 1986.

What a distance the club has travelled since that day in 1890, we are not sure of the exact day or even the month, when some young men met at the old Jubilee Hall at Hornsey and decided to form a running club and called it Shaftesbury Harriers. Jubilee Hall was then newly built and used for dances, concerts and such like social events, and was over what was then called a coffee tavern. It stood at the corner of Hornsey Road and Fairbridge Road, not far from Hornsey Road railway station and a mile from Hampstead Heath. It seems probable that, like others of the many clubs being formed about that time, the title came from a road in the district. Possibly some of the lads lived in Shaftesbury Road close by; with its tall Victorian houses the road has not changed so much with the passing years. The Shaftesbury Tavern is still on the corner. The first headquarters were at a coffee shop in Crouch End from which runs were held for two seasons after which a move was made to the Fox and Crown on West Hill, Highgate. This pub has since been demolished, but carved on the house built on the site is “The site of the Fox and Crown”.

Last year a group of SBH oldies met at the Wrestler’s Pub where the first known picture of Shaftesbury Harriers was taken.  This year we thought we would have another get together in the Shaftesbury Tavern in Hornsey.  We will be meeting at 7pm on Wednesday 4th December 2024.  The Shaftesbury Tavern is located on the corner of Shaftesbury Road and Hornsey Road.    It would be great to see some of you there!

The Shaftesbury Barnet Harriers Centenary Year Book states:
And so it came about that in 1890 a few lads, most of whom would have been about 16 years of age, assembled at Jubilee Hall and decided to form a running club and called it Shaftesbury Harriers.  Jubilee Hall was then newly built and used for dances, concerts and such-like social events, and was over what was then called a coffee tavern.  It stood at the corner of Hornsey Road and Fairbridge Road, not far from Hornsey Road railway station, and about a mile from Hampstead Heath.
It seems probable that, like others of the many clubs being formed about that time, the title came from a road in the district.  Possibly some lads lived in Shaftesbury Road close by: with its tall Victorian houses the road has not changed so much with the passing years.  The Shaftesbury Tavern is still on the corner.

A photo of our get together last year from left to right, RAY POWELL (49 years with the club), MARTIN GREY (56 years), TONY SUNDERLAND (69 years), PHIL CUNNINGHAM (50 years), JOHN DRYDEN (52 years), DAVE BEDFORD (59 years), PHIL RICHARDSON (63 years), JOHN KELLY (a mere 44 years) and JULIAN GOATER (57 years). GERALD ALTERMAN (43 years) and JO NEWELL also attended but unfortunately needed to leave before the photo. Well over 500 years of club membership between them!
There will be another get together later this year.

IS BBC’S ATHLETICS COVERAGE TAKEN FOR GRANTED?  The following article was published on the Athletics Weekly website recently.

The Beeb’s free-to-air coverage is often criticised but watching Grand Slam Sports in the UK costs £30.99 per month on TNT Sports. For years, BBC’s coverage of the No.1 Olympic sport has come under fire. Criticism usually focuses on the arguably excessive time spent talking to studio pundits. “Show us more athletics action rather than chit-chat!” scream the fans. BBC’s long-time loyalty when it comes to covering athletics, however, was demonstrated recently when it announced a new five-year deals to cover the Wanda Diamond League and TCS London Marathon.

Those with long memories will remember what happened when Channel 4 got hold of the World Athletics Championships in 2011. In addition to frustrating advertising breaks, among other things the main presenter ORTIS DELEY was ridiculed and eventually dropped. although his memorably cringe-worthy sign-off line of “Jessica Ennis, goodnight” has stood the test of time as a classic moment in athletics history.

Not everyone enjoys BBC coverage, but they are a safe and extraordinarily loyal pair of hands. Their broadcasts are also free-to-air, all of which brings us to TNT Sports. TNT recently merged with Eurosport and in recent weeks the only way to watch Grand Slam Track has been on TNT Sports, whereas the channel has also shown the Boston and London marathons. Historically, Eurosport has shown a lot of athletics as well from track and field grand prix meetings across Europe through to big city marathons and much more. The bad news for athletics fans is that this merger with TNT Sports has seen the monthly subscription fee rise from £6.99 to a hefty £30.99. It is a price that will put many off. This was illustrated in a recent social media poll by the British Athletics Supporters’ Club where 52.9% of respondents simply said they didn’t have TNT Sports.

If MICHAEL JOHNSON and his team at Grand Slam Track hope to make their event as available as possible and to grow a global audience then showing the meetings on TNT Sports in the UK is probably not the way to go. The actual coverage so far has been good, with STEVE CRAM leading the commentary team, but it is simply too expensive for many Brits, in addition to being on during the Witching Hour due to the time difference with venues such as Kingston in Jamaica and Miami.

In cycling there has been an even bigger hoo-ha since their sport moved largely to TNT Sports. For years a lot of cycling was shown on Eurosport, but it is now on TNT with a £30.99/month subscription. “Viewers have reacted to the move with frustration, disbelief and outright fury as they have begun to ponder the implications to their finances and whether they will have to forgo watching their favourite sport,” reported Cycling Weekly, who added that a survey involving almost 1000 people showed that just 2.5% were willing to sign up to TNT Sports with 9% undecided.

Right now only a small amount of athletics is shown on TNT Sports. But if the broadcast landscape changes, we may see more track and field on channels such as this. So the next time you find yourself getting frustrated with BBC coverage, try to appreciate how loyal and inexpensive its athletics coverage has been for so many years. We will probably miss it when it’s gone.

WHY THE DIAMOND LEAGUE IS THE CROWN JEWEL OF THE SPORT  The following article was published on the Athletics Weekly website recently.

Diamond League CEO PETR STASTNY on the impact of new arrivals on the scene and why he believes his series is still best represents the entire sport. “Sometimes new kids on the block catch more attention than those who’ve been around for a while,” says PETR STASTNY. As he chats with AW in mid-April, the CEO of the Wanda Diamond League is considering the recent arrival of fresh events to the athletics calendar and their potential impact.

None has arrived with greater fanfare than Grand Slam Track, a series created by MICHAEL JOHNSON largely in response to what the former Olympic 200m and 400m champion believes is missing from what the Diamond League offers – namely more head-to-head match-ups and a more coherent structure. There are other fresh faces too, such as the Athlos meeting which will be staged for a second time in New York this autumn, while world record-holder RYAN CROUSER is in the early stages of creating his own shot put league in America, three-time world champion Mutaz Essa Barshim has showcased the high jump via his “What Gravity Challenge” and the first edition of the Neeraj Chopra Classic – named after India’s former Olympic javelin champion – will take place in India later this month.

In recent issues of this magazine, the likes of CROUSER and nine-time Olympic champion CARL LEWIS have spoken about the need for track and field to fragment, for disciplines to start going their own way if the sport is to survive in between the major championships. STASTNY sees things slightly differently. “If everybody runs their own series, then it will be more fragmented and it will be even more difficult for fans to follow,” he says. “So while I think it is good that there is interest, and while I think it is good that athletes develop their own initiatives, one would have to see how that is transported to the fans – through what channels and how many fans actually can follow these individual activities. That is the same for Athlos or NEERAJ CHOPRA’S throwers.”

With pointed reference to the fact that Diamond League events feature both track and field disciplines, he adds: “We, of course, feel that we represent the entire sport, and we will continue doing that.” Those whose events are not considered to be “Diamond disciplines” and therefore don’t feature on the Diamond League programme – hammer throwers and 10,000m runners, for example – might have something to say about that statement but, as it reaches its 15th anniversary, the project that was introduced as a replacement to the Golden League in 2010 has already been flexing its muscles. At the time of writing, the first meeting on the 2025 schedule was yet to take place in Xiamen, while the second is now fast approaching in Shanghai. But before a step was run or a projectile thrown there were some big announcements.

Last month’s press releases proclaimed that JAKOB INGEBRIGTSEN will take on Olympic 1500m champion COLE HOCKER and bronze medallist YARED NUGUSE in the Bowerman Mile at the Prefontaine Classic in July, for example, while later that month the Norwegian will resume everyone’s favourite middle-distance rivalry with JOSH KERR at a London Athletics Meet that has already sold 50,000 tickets.

“It is the level of performance and also the head-to-heads in many events [that excites me as a fan],” says STASTNY, who has been with the Diamond League since the very beginning. “The performance level in 2023 and 2024, with seven world records being broken at Diamond League meetings, is just astonishing. But we cannot build, and we do not build, a product on world records. It’s performances and duels. “At the start of last season I said that: “We had had the greatest season ever in 2023 it’s very difficult to replicate, we don’t build on that” and then I was proven wrong. It was just as good. That was a positive surprise, I would say. The athletes really performed and we will see how it is in 2025 but many are of the opinion that the Diamond League is the series they want to be part of. We pay lower prize money, that is for sure, but we cater for many more athletes at all of our events than any other event.” That prize money is indeed lower in comparison to others but it’s also true that the Diamond League rewards have never been higher. While Grand Slam Track athletes take home $100,000 for the win in each event, $50,000 for second and $30,000 for third (the “Racers” have a salary too), it’s $10,000 for a Diamond League win this year and $30,000 for victory in the final. There is also the introduction of four “Diamond+” disciplines for each meeting – there are eight for the final – in which athletes will receive $20,000 for an event win, $50,000 at the final.

That, of course, is on top of the outlay of the fees negotiated for an athlete to compete in the first place, while Diamond League winners also receive a wild card entry to the World Athletics Championships. “We feel that we have a sustainable model when it comes to the sport itself, with series meetings where you can acquire qualification points and then the final at the end of our season,” says STASTNY. “That final reaches even further with the wild cards to the championships, be it the World Championships or the Ultimate Championships [World Athletics’ new event for 2026] in future. We also have a sustainable economical model in contrast to some others. So we will see how that goes.” While STASTNY says he welcomes the competition that Grand Slam Track brings, it has already thrown up an intriguing calendar clash. May 3 will see the second Diamond League meeting of the year taking place in Shanghai on a date that represents the midway point of the second Slam of the year, in Miami. “Both will have top athletes at their events,” he says. “So it is just that the calendar is even more of a challenge than it used to be.”

Which begs the question, will there be enough room for everyone? “That’s a question I can’t answer because we haven’t tried it yet,” says STASTNY. “It doesn’t get easier with the calendar. It will be a larger challenge when we have the European Championships, which will not adhere to the World Athletics calendar structure. That’s where we will see if there is enough room for everyone. “The calendar has always been a challenge and it’s not easing. As I already said, it’s good that there are new initiatives but it’s not good when there are date clashes, because that does not really help the athletes. We are happy for them to make money with us and with others but if two main opportunities are staged on the same day, then you kind of rob [some of] the athletes of an opportunity. “Now, I hope the people don’t forget that the Diamond League is still the highest level series we have in this sport.”

Asked for his thoughts on the inaugural Grand Slam Track meeting in Kingston, STASTNY simply adds: “I would like to talk about our series. We have a two-hour action-packed programme [at each Diamond League], and the other series has the opposite. It depends what you like. I prefer a two-hour action-packed programme.” STASTNY doesn’t necessarily agree with the idea that the sport of track and field is changing at the moment – more that the landscape around it is evolving, albeit there won’t be any major sporting changes at Diamond League meetings this year. “We have tried things out in the Diamond League with a final three [in the jumps and throws], and now World Athletics is trying the jump-off zone but it is still athletics – it’s running, jumping, throwing and the best wins,” he says. “With some other formats we have seen, it’s still running, jumping, throwing, and the fastest and furthest is the winner. We need to reinvent ourselves constantly without changing the essence of the sport. “We will start our season, and then we will see how we are perceived. Maybe more people will follow the Diamond League. Who knows?”

CURRENT DISTRIBUTION OF SHAFTESBURY INFORMATION Currently I notify members (by email) using “MailChimp”. The reason I changed, was in November 2017 “Gmail” put a limit of 100 addresses that users could send to in a 24-hour period, and currently I send to approximately 850 members each issue.

On seeking technical advice “MailChimp” was recommended as the best way for SBH to go forward. There is one thing you should be aware off is that when you receive an email from me, the footer at the bottom has 4 options, of which one is “Unsubscribe Me From List”. Could I ask you not to select this as if you do you will be automatically removed from my distribution list.
