ATHLETES ATTENDANCE AT ALLIANZ PARK – London 2012 was undoubtedly a huge success but one of the key legacies that was promised by the Olympics was to be vastly increased participation. So it was a great disappointment when the recently published figures showed static / falling participation levels in many sports. However this is far from the case with Athletics Training at Allianz Park.

The new indoor facilities and the all-weather pitch area became available for public use in March 2013. The Summer 2013 athletics season went very well in all the circumstances, with a high level of satisfaction achieved at all school and club commitments. Large numbers of local residents were attracted to Allianz Park to watch Premiership Rugby and were truly impressed by the new facilities. Saracens Sport Foundation continued their promotion of the Saracens Young Athletes Academy in the local schools and have been inundated with new participants in the 6 to 10 age groups. The resident athletics clubs, Shaftesbury Barnet Harriers and Barnet & District AC have both enjoyed massive membership increases, particularly in the 10 to 15 age groups. SBH Team manager Geoff Morphitis commented “SBH have been based at the Stadium since it was first opened in 1964 and many generations of Barnet residents have enjoyed athletics here, but 2013 has been truly unbelievale. Comparing the attendances at the 24 twice weekly training sessions in the 3 month period October 2012 to December 2012 to those for the 3 month period October 2013 to December 2013 shows an increase of 51%, from 2442 to 3679. Our membership of boys and girls in these age groups has increased by over 40%, we’ve never had anything like this before. Undoubtedly the investment in facilities and the enthusiasm of the Saracen’s staff has proved that a true Olympic legacy can be achieved in Barnet.”
