SOUTHERN CLUBS TAKE SENIOR TITLES AT SUTTON PARK – The following article was published on the Athletics Weekly website recently. This is a section taken from the article.
Autumnal sunshine and mild weather greeted the clubs from the three areas to the home of English road relay running on Saturday 8 October. The senior titles at these English Road Running Association (ERRA) Autumn Relays went to Aldershot (Men) and Tonbridge (Women) as the South of England also provided the fastest laps in both races.
Selection for the men’s event was again based on the first 25 clubs in each of the areas with the official South of England championship and the alternative Aldershot relays being awarded eight slots each, with the balance being decided on the following teams’ merits. In the event, all of the extra slots went to clubs from the non-official race. This meant that there were just six from the official Southern championship race and 22 from the alternative Rushmoor event taking the chance to race here.

A NEW EXPERIENCE – LESLIE ODAMTTEN-ADDY has been a member of Shaftesbury since 2006, aged 18. He has competed for the club from 60m up to 800m, plus a couple of Parkruns.
I have just received an email saying he had just competed a road race, thinking maybe a 5km, but no the “Berlin Marathon”. This is his story;
This was my first attempt at competing the marathon distance and the prestige of doing so in such a historic city and event certainly did not disappoint! I was fortunate to receive an entry place mid-August and overall preparations went well. Race Plan…enjoy and have fun (and if I’m lucky enough run a fast time).
The Race – 0 to 10km (39.19) The atmosphere at the start line was electric. The crowd and announcers were all cheering for ELUID KIPCHOGE to hopefully produce a special performance. I think we all fed off the positive energy and there was a sense of camaraderie amongst the runners; that perhaps we were going to be part of something special. The energy boost helped as I went through even 5k splits (19mins).
10 to 20km (1:21.02) Despite the quick pace I felt comfortable and worked my way through the field and all pace sections.
Half Way (1:25.56) Just another 21km to go.
Half Way to 30km (2:11.14) Reached a good target crossing 30km. On track for a sub 3hour finish.
30km to 40km (3:20.59) It was this point I realised something was wrong L . I had sharp pains through my quad muscle, and it became difficult to flex my knee. I tried to use the energy of the crowd and will power but alas the pain became so severe that I had to walk/jog the remaining marathon distance.
42km Finish (3:36.20) The aim was to try and finish in one piece. The sense of relief and elation was mixed but certainly happy to compete my first marathon.
Bittersweet but the experience was special, especially the adulations from the crowds and all the volunteers. I’m on the road to recovery…one ultrasound and MRI later…i have a treatment plan in place. See you at the start line soon.
THE BIRMINGHAM CREW – Currently we have athletes at either Birmingham or Loughborough University. Recently a social evening was held at Birmingham, with theme “Club Vests”. As you can see from the photograph, they certainly looked pretty sharp. From left to right JOSH WOODS, LILY HOLT, TRINITY O’CONNOR, CRAIG MONCUR and EVAN CAMPBELL.
LLOYD COWAN BURSARY OPEN FOR COACHES AND YOUNG ATLETES – The following article was published on the Athletics Weekly website recently.
Former SBH member LLOYD COWAN passed away on 11 January 2021, of Covid-19 at the relatively young age of 58. He unfortunately had underlying medical issues having recently suffered a stroke. LLOYD competed for us in the BAL in the mid-90’s. He set a club record for the 110m Hurdles with (13.75) in 1994 which is still 3rd on the SBH all-time list. He then moved up to 400m Hurdles and in 1995 ran (50.79) for 6th on the current SBH all-time list. LLOYD had his greatest success in coaching CHRISTINE OHURUOGU to Olympic Gold and countless other medals in International Championships.
Grants of up to £500 will be awarded to athletics coaches and to unfunded athletes with potential, aged between 16 and 23, for whom cost is a barrier to accessing developmental opportunities in athletics. The application window closes 23:59 on October 13. The selection process will take place the following week when the Grants Committee will meet to consider every submission. Decisions will be confirmed by the end of October. Sixty percent of UK-wide applicants received grants in the first edition of the award in 2021. European under-18 medallists TENDAI NYABADZA [1500m], REBECCA GRIEVE [Girls Medley Relay] and under-17 indoor 60mH British record-holder JAIDEN DEAN were among the first athlete recipients. GWENNAN LEWIS and ANITA RICHARDSON, who guides under-20 talent Success Eduan, were two of the coaches to receive awards. View the LLOYD COWAN Bursary guidance and application forms for athletes and coaches here.
The Lloyd Cowan Bursary was set up in memory of LLOYD COWAN MBE, who believed that no one with sporting potential should be held back by lack of support and opportunities. The Bursary awards grants of up to £500 once a year, both to qualified coaches and to unfunded athletes, aged 16-23, for whom cost is a barrier to accessing developmental opportunities in athletics. LLOYD was an international athlete before hanging up his spikes and becoming one of the UK’s most successful coaches. He guided many leading British sprinters, including World, Olympic and Commonwealth 400m champion CHRISTINE OHURUOGU and European 110m hurdles champion ANDY TURNER. Tragically LLOYD died in January 2021, aged 58, after contracting COVID-19.
