Shaftesbury Barnet Harriers Weekly Newsletter Thursday 19 June 2025

Happy Birthday from Thursday 19 June to Wednesday 25 June – Oliver Barribal, Tami George, Zehra Kizilgoz, Rayyan Kaderbhoy, Paul Maccarthy and Natasha Tanner

HELP WANTEDPARENTS – We need your help to ensure your child can compete at all their events this season!
Volunteering to help on the track or field at just a couple of our home and away fixtures in 2025, will give us certainty early on that the meetings can go ahead. It’s a fun way to be involved on the day, you will still be free to watch your child’s events, lunches and refreshments are always provided at our home fixtures and at most away ones too.

Please contact either GERALD ALTERMAN or ROSALIND ZEFFERTT for further information or complete this form SBH 2025 Summer Availability.

RECENT NEW MEMBERS – We wish you a very warm welcome, and a happy, healthy and successful time with Shaftesbury to MARKO MANKOVSKY and JAMES STEYN

NEW CLUB RECORD – Congratulations to NAOMI TASCHIMOWITZ who broke the Women’s 35-39 500m track record with a time of (16:06.75) at the Fast 5000 at Mason-Laffitte, France on 7 June. The previous Club Record was (16.13.38) by LUCY ELLIOTT set at Crystal Palace on 6 August 2005.

PARKRUN 350 CLUB – Congratulations to RUSSELL DEVITT V75 who completec his 350th Parkrun last Saturday at Panshanger.

PARKRUN 50 CLUB – Congratulations to RICHARD SAMUEL V70 who completec his 50th Parkrun last Saturday at Kuchenholtz, Germany.

REQUEST FROM TEAM MANAGERS – We are asking that you reply to team managers when they contact you? It’s very difficult to select a team if the athletes don’t reply especially when we can see that they have read the text. Even if they are unavailable the team managers need to know!

SBH CLUB RECORDS – I have carried out a review of athletes performances on the PO10, Following this I have found the odd record that had not been picked up, also events that not included in the club record list (mainly U9/U11 and veteran athletes). Another reason is some results can be posted on the PO10 a week or so late, and it is almost impossible to no they have been included on the PO10.
To help in identifying a club record, I have produced a single document, for example ‘Men’s Club Track and Road Records Outdoors’ and all events from Under 9 up to Masters 70+ are shown on one page. Also probably fortnightly is to review the clubs section on the PO10, this identifies every performance for every age-group, based on all results published on the PO10.

These are those documents – A Club Outdoor Track And Road Records For All Men Age Groups Updated 14-06-25  B Club Outdoor Field Records For All Men Age Groups Updated 14-06-25  C Club Indoor Track Records For All Men Age Groups Updated 14-06-25  D Club Indoor Field Records For All Men Age-Groups Updated 14-06-25  E Club Outdoor Track And Road Records For All Women Age Groups Updated 14-06-25  F Club Outdoor Field Records For All Women Age Groups Updated 14-06-25  G Club Indoor Track And Field Records For All Women Age Groups Updated 14-06-25

STONEX STADIUM MEMBERSHIP – To use the StoneX Stadium facilities for training, SBH members are required to pay a fee. You can register as a member (which is free) which then entitles you to a discount. This is the link to the form to apply for membership – SBH StoneX Membership 2024-2025  The entrance fee on the membership form, covers the period 1 May 2024 to 30 April 2025. The entrance fee charges have not been increased from the 1 May 2025 as yet, we will be advised of any changes when they take place. Please us the 2024-2025 membership form until further notice.

LEE VALLEY OPEN MEETINGS  They have not published their fixtures yet, although they now say they will be imminent. I sent them an email on 31 May, and have not received a reply as yet.

WATFORD OPEN MEETINGS  To avoid disappointment, please remember the each meeting opens on the lunchtime of the preceding meeting and other than sprints are normally full within about 48 hours. Therefore the 25 June fixture will be open from the 10 June on the ‘Roster’ site.

UPCOMING FIXTURES – I have now shown as 2 sections – The first section covers the fixtures that SBH compete in and other major fixtures – The second section covers the Open Meeting fixtures, that you have to enter yourselves.

SHAFTESBURY BARNET HARRIERS SUBSCRIPTIONS – Our new Club year started on 1 October 2024. The current SBH annual subscription is £85 (following the recent 2024 SBH AGM) and the current England Athletics annual registration from 1 April 2025 is £20. The current total is £105 and should be paid NOW to; ACCOUNT NAME: SHAFTESBURY BARNET HARRIERS, BANK: HSBC, ACCOUNT NUMBER: 41308378, SORT CODE: 400426 – Please advise GEOFF MORPHITIS by email (geoffrey.morphitis@capeandd.com) when payment has been made.

RESULTS
Just to clarify, that the results I publish can be different to those that are shown on the Power of 10. The differences relate to seasons and personal best performances. For example in the recent EYAL results, an athlete in the 200m ran (24.1), and on his profile his season’s best was shown as (23.88) indoors. As the 200m indoors and outdoors are totally different type of events, I had shown the (24.1) as a season’s best. Regarding Master athletes any personal best performances relate to their current age-groups, as Club Records for Masters age-groups are in 5 year periods.

BRITISH 400M HURDLING ON THE RISE IN 2025  The following article was published on the Athletics Weekly website recently.

ALASTAIR CHALMERS superlative run this past weekend was yet more evidence of Great Britain’s athletes excelling over the distance. Cast your mind back to last year’s UK Athletics Championships and the moment when ALASTAIR CHALMERS attempted to qualify for the Paris Olympics. To guarantee selection for the Games, the British hurdler needed to run faster than the automatic qualification mark of 48.70, given he narrowly missed out with 48.76 at the European Championships. However, things quickly unravelled in Manchester after Chalmers left his blocks before the starting gun. As was his right, the Guernsey athlete ran under protest and, with the mindset of proving all the doubters wrong, he stormed round the track in a championships record of (48.53). Crucially, it was also under the time needed to qualify for the Olympics. Would the result stand though? CHALMERS had claimed that the reason for such a quick reaction was because he heard noise in the crowd. Almost two hours after he finished the race, officials upheld his appeal and agreed with his argument.

CHALMERS, with his very last opportunity, had qualified for the Games, later stating that it went from being “the worst day” of his life to “the best”. With the automatic qualification standard for this year’s World Athletics Championships in Tokyo being (48.50) instead of (48.70), you might’ve thought that athletes would find it tougher to meet that mark. But, in the last few weeks, a myriad of Great Britain’s male British hurdlers have upped their game and taken things to the next level. CHALMERS has once again led the way. This past weekend, the 25-year-old recorded a personal best of (48.30) – following times of (49.13) and (48.61) this season – to win from lane two in Rehlingen, Germany. That means that the Guernsey athlete has, in early June, almost certainly booked his spot on the plane to the Japanese capital.

Not far behind CHALMERS on the 2025 lists is SEAMUS DERBYSHIRE, who decimated his personal best of (49.29) with (48.47) – also under the automatic world qualification mark – at the Josef Odlozil Memorial around a fortnight ago. Then, at last month’s IFAM Outdoor Meet in Brussels, JOSH FAULDS, JAKE MINSHULL, ALEX KNIBBS and TYRI DONOVAN all ran under 50 seconds, the former two going sub-49 over the distance. FAULDS won a highly competitive race in damp conditions, recording a time of (48.59) in the Belgian capital – a mark that is under the UKA consideration standard (48.70) for this year’s World Athletics Championships. MINSHULL’S (48.88) means he is just short of that UKA mark, while KNIBBS (49.08) and DONOVAN (49.45) also improved their bests by some margin. OLIVER PARKER, at the age of 19, has also run (51.02), putting him third on the European under-20 list so far this season.

In the women’s 400m hurdles LINA NIELSEN, who went sixth on the UK all-time list with (54.43) at last summer’s European Championships, continues to lead the way. EMILY NEWNHAM has had an impressive season so far and, alongside her two relay medals from the European Indoor Championships, improved her personal best from (56.85) to (55.20) in Brussels. Last month, HAYLEY MCLEAN took almost a second off her best as well, taking down her mark of (56.56) to (55.48).

A lot of observers would likely say ‘it’s about time’. A distance synonymous with British success – the country boasts three Olympic and two world champions – the 400m hurdles has captured the imagination of fans and onlookers across many different generations. DAVID BURGHLEY, who switched to politics after his athletics exploits – he served as a Conservative MP for Peterborough from 1931 until 1943 – became Olympic 400m hurdles champion at the Amsterdam 1928 Games.

At the Mexico 1968 Olympics, DAVID HEMERY produced a world record on his way to topping the podium, with his mark of (48.12) lasting until 1972 when JOHN AKI-BUA ran (47.82) at the Munich Games. And who can forget SALLY GUNNELL at Barcelona 1992? In dominant fashion, the Brit clocked (53.23), seeing off American duo SANDRA FARMER-PATRICK and JANEENE VICKERS to secure the gold medal in Spain. A year later, GUNNELL would go on to win the world title in Stuttgart, setting a world record of (52.74) in the process. DAI GREENE, who secured the gold medal in Daegu 12 years ago, is Great Britain’s other world 400m hurdles champion. KRISS AKABUSI, at the age of 32 years and 272 days, is still the oldest male world 400m hurdles medallist – he claimed bronze at Tokyo 1991 – to this day. He backed that up with Olympic bronze in Barcelona a year later.

JOHN SHERWOOD and TASHA DANVERS also secured respective Olympic bronzes in the distance at the Mexico City 1968 and Beijing 2008 Games. From the likes of KARSTEN WARHOLM to SYDNEY MCLAUGHLIN-LEVRONE, there is fierce international competition nowadays, so any British athlete will have their work cut out at the highest level of the sport. However, it’s undeniable that there is clear progress in the 400m hurdles domestically and it will be fascinating to see how it unfolds, with both the men’s and women’s events at the UK Athletics Championships looking unmissable. Let’s hope it stays that way as well.

MONDO DUPLANTIS RISES TO THE OCCASION IN STOCKHOLM  The following article was published on the Athletics Weekly website recently.

For a man who always seems so laidback and unhurried, MONDO DUPLANTIS has been on a fast track to producing an extraordinary body of sporting work. The Olympic Stadium in Stockholm has borne witness to many remarkable moments since it was opened for the 1912 Games, but the darling of the home crowd breaking the pole vault world record for a 12th time with a clearance of (6.28m) on Sunday (June 15) – and at the first time of asking – must surely rank high among them all.

There is a “walk of fame” on the way into the arena to commemorate notable achievements to have taken place within its walls. It won’t be long until DUPLANTIS’ name is carved into that pantheon. The significance and weight of that is part of the reason why DUPLANTIS wanted to break the world record in the city he calls home and at the Bauhaus Galan Diamond League meeting. He might have been born in Louisiana, but with a Swedish mother and extended family, he chose to compete internationally for the Scandinavian nation and in a stadium where he first competed at the age of 11. This was, as he put it, his “big dream” and it became reality in remarkable style. Many of that extended family were there to see it for themselves, too.

DUPLANTIS entered the competition at (5.60m), which he cleared with little trouble. The same applied for his subsequent leaps of (5.70m), (5.80m), (5.90m) and (6.00m). By then the competition was comfortably won, with Australian KURTIS MARSCHALL the opponent who got closest with his clearance of (5.90m). That left the stage clear for the star man to do “the thing” and the bar went straight to (6.28m), once centimetre higher than the mark he set indoors in France earlier this year. There have been occasions, such as during the Paris Olympics last summer, when the two-time outdoor world champion has heightened the drama by breaking the world record with his very last attempt. This time, he needed just one.

“I feel full to the brim right now,” he said, as the dust settled after the raucous celebrations during which he tore off his shirt and ran into the crowd. “The first time I jumped in this stadium when I was 11 years old it was rainy, cold and I jumped right under 4m. It was quite high for how young I was. I’ve jumped a lot here and they etch the names of world record holders here. “The last one was a long time ago. My mum was in the stands when PATRIK SJOBERG broke the [high jump] world record in 1986. I think there’s a common denominator here, she’s a lucky charm. It’s going to be really special to have my name etched in the stadium. It’s the most beautiful stadium in my biased opinion. It’ll be one of the greatest memories for me in my career.”  The two-time Olympic champion is a keen musician and even released a track called Bop earlier this year. He insists there is another on the way soon. When it comes to the day job, he just produces hit after hit.
