RESULTS
Just to clarify, that the results I publish can be different to those that are shown on the Power of 10. The differences relate to seasons and personal best performances. For example in the recent EYAL results, an athlete in the 200m ran (24.1), and on his profile his season’s best was shown as (23.88) indoors. As the 200m indoors and outdoors are totally different type of events, I had shown the (24.1) as a season’s best.
The Power of 10 publishes separate UK rankings for indoor and outdoor performances.

UK ATHLETICS YOUTH DEVELOPMENT LEAGUE, SOUTHERN PREMIER UPPER – The first of three fixtures took place at Eton on 28 April.

TIPTON HARRIERS ALLAN RUSHMER DIES AGED 80  The following article was published on the Athletics Weekly website recently.

Popular distance runner won Commonwealth bronze over three miles in 1966 and later excelled as a veteran runner. One of the most iconic athletes during the 1960s and early 1970s, ALLAN RUSHMER won bronze in the Commonwealth Games three miles in 1966, placed fifth in the European 10,000m in the same year and represented Britain at the 1968 Olympics. A Tipton Harriers stalwart from the Black Country of the West Midlands, he died on April 23 in York aged 80.

RUSHMER was a relatively late starter as he began running at 16 when he joined Oldbury AC and soon began to make an impact in national competitions. In 1965 he joined Tipton Harriers and began to break through to international level while holding down a full-time job as an upholsterer. His GB debut came alongside BRUCE TULLOH against the Soviet Union at the White City in June 1966, but later that summer, just days after England had won the World Cup at Wembley, he finished third in the British Empire and Commonwealth Games in Kingston, Jamaica, behind KIP KEINO of Kenya and RON CLARKE of Australia in the three miles, clocking (13:08.6). Returning home, he then finished fifth – and first Brit – in the 10,000m at the European Championships, running (28:37.8) to equal MIKE FREARY’S British record.

“RUSHIE”, as he was affectionately known, enjoyed many clashes with fellow iconic athletes from the period such as RON HILL, GERRY NORTH and DICK TAYLOR. He went on to run a sub-four-minute mile with (3:58.7) in 1967 and (13:29.8) for 5000m in 1970, whereas he also ran a (2:20) marathon despite only dabbling with the distance. In 1968 he earned selection for the Olympics in Mexico but was knocked out in the heats, describing it as a “disaster”. He was also unlucky in 1970 to finish fourth in the stirring Commonwealth 5000m in Edinburgh behind IAN STEWART, IAN MCCAFFERTY and KEINO, but ahead of multiple world record-holder CLARKE, who he passed on the last lap. STEWART went on to be his best man at his wedding in 1972 and RUSHMER went on to have two children, EMILY and LAURA, with his wife KATH.

His Olympic dreams were ruined that same year, though, when bronchial asthma put paid to his attempts to make the team for Munich. He had been in fine form, too, placing third in the infamous 1972 English National where a sudden sleet storm with plummeting temperatures at Sutton Park left the athletes shivering with, in some cases, hypothermia. The illness ended RUSHMER’S career prematurely but he would return a few years later as a masters athlete, winning the European veterans’ 10,000m title in 1984. Yet more than anything, RUSHMER was renowned for being a club stalwart and few races excited him more than national road relays or battling for team medals at the National Cross Country Championships. “Small in stature but massive in heart and soul,” Tipton Harriers said in a statement. “ALLAN was truly one of the greats that have graced this club and had one of the longest competitive associations with us.”

PARKRUN ORGANISERS REFUSE TO BRING BACK THE STATS  The following article was published on the Athletics Weekly website recently.

When it comes to bringing back the statistics on the parkrun website, organisers are digging the heels of their running shoes firmly into the turf. Not only do parkrun organisers have no intention of bringing back the age and course records but they may go further in future by removing the ability for parkrunners to see the results of fellow participants. Campaigners who are calling for parkrun to “bring back the stats” – WILL HARTLEY, MARY TAYLOR and ALEXANDER SMOTROV – met with parkrun founder PAUL SINTON-HEWITT and chief executive RUSS JEFFERYS after the Higginson parkrun in Marlow on Saturday (April 27) and say they had good-natured discussion that lasted 90 minutes.

The campaigners were met with disappointment, though, when SINTON-HEWITT and JEFFERYS ferys insisted they had no intention of buckling to a petition that has so far gained 25,000 signatures. What’s more, they talked about possibly going further in future. “They have visions for the future of removing the ability to see any other runners data and results,” writes TAYLOR in a post-meeting summary posted here, “and in only being able to see your own individual results as well as event results.” However, she added: “They envisage parkrun to have a social aspect where you can “befriend” or “follow” other runners, as you might on Facebook or Strava, and mutual friends could view the statistics of their friends.”

TAYLOR and fellow campaigners at the meeting say the idea of removing a participant’s gender from parkrun’s online pages was also discussed. Another strong theme was parkrun’s insistence that their events are neither a sport nor a race. “If you want to be competitive,” is their message, “then join a club.” TAYLOR said: “It was really disappointing that parkrun show no intention of seeking a way to continue providing the course stats that meant so much to so many. It is clear that they wish to present their reason as it being in keeping with their ethos and aims as a charity, but it’s also clear that, to an undefined degree, they have felt it necessary to make this change to avoid being classified as a sport or race.” She added: “It is hard to agree that they are truly ‘listening’ when they open a discussion meeting with ‘the stats are never coming back’. “Our aims have never been to damage parkrun, but to return the course stats for those who benefited from them, since for us the justification for their removal has always fallen short of adequately supporting the change.”

PHOTOGRAPH’S – From time to time we have photographs of our members taken at meetings or presentations which we would like to use both on the website or incorporated within our report to our local newspaper. Can you please let me know if you do NOT want your photograph to be published. Also, I would appreciate if you could send me any photographs, which I can then publish on the website and newsletter.

FACEBOOK – Photographs can be found on the SBH page.

CAN YOU HELP PLEASE I would welcome any contributions From Yourselves, any impending marriages, or additions to the family, any running or competing incidents, also past warm weather training/holidays (No Club 24 please). Currently the response has been excellent, but if you have anything that could make it into next week’s Newsletter – please email me.

CURRENT DISTRIBUTION OF SHAFTESBURY INFORMATION Currently I notify members (by email) using “MailChimp”. The reason I changed, was in November 2017 “Gmail” put a limit of 100 addresses that users could send to in a 24-hour period, and currently I send to approximately 850 members each issue.

On seeking technical advice “MailChimp” was recommended as the best way for SBH to go forward. There is one thing you should be aware off is that when you receive an email from me, the footer at the bottom has 4 options, of which one is “Unsubscribe Me From List”. Could I ask you not to select this as if you do you will be automatically removed from my distribution list.
