TONY SMITH RECALLS TONY who was Shaftesbury’s Young Athletes Team Manager from the early 1980s for a period of some 35 years, in those years he installed a team spirit that we still have until this present day.
A little while ago TONY was watching a medical programme on TV, and on the end credits he recognized the name JAY RAWAL. His memory kicked in and remembers JAY from the 1980s who was a very good 800m and cross country runner.
TONY followed this up by phoning Addenbrooks Hospital in Cambridge, and the receptionist confirmed that JAY was the Head of the Trauma Unit. Later that day JAY rang TONY, and as he was going to be in the area soon, arranged to meet TONY at his house in Radlett. They spent a time reminiscing his time at Shaftesbury, and still keeps fit with the occasional jog.
Another ex-Shaftesbury runner is ABIB ABOOD, who is a Senior Plastic Surgeon in a private hospital. TONY also recollects a certain singer GEORGE MICHAEL was with Shaftesbury for around 18 months when he was 13.

RESULTS
Just to clarify, that the results I publish can be different to those that are shown on the Power of 10. The differences relate to seasons and personal best performances. For example in the recent EYAL results, an athlete in the 200m ran (24.1), and on his profile his season’s best was shown as (23.88) indoors. As the 200m indoors and outdoors are totally different type of events, I had shown the (24.1) as a season’s best.
The Power of 10 publishes separate UK rankings for indoor and outdoor performances.

Provisional results from the South East Schools Championships (Cunliffe Cup) at StoneX Stadium on 15 June. ELKIE BAKER U17 in the Women’s Discus 1kg (2nd Claim) threw a (PB 38.17m) adding 1.01m to her 2023 throw (37.16m), and is ranked UK No.4 U17 in 2024.

EMMANUEL WANYONYI RUNS 1:41.70 AT KENYAN OLYMPIC TRIALS  The following article was published on the Athletics Weekly website recently.

The 800m runner goes No.3 on the world all-time rankings behind DAVID RUDISHA and WILSON KIPKETER. EMMANUEL WANYONYI was fortunate to make the final at the Kenyan Olympic Trials in Nairobi after falling in his heat. But after a successful appeal he delivered a masterful performance in the final as he front-ran to victory in (1:41.70). Only DAVID RUDISHA with (1:40.91) and WILSON KIPKETER with (1:41.11) have run faster. WANYONYI‘S run, which was set at 1795m of altitude, is also the quickest since RUDISHA’S world record at London 2012.

However, world 800m standards at the highest level have not progressed hugely in recent years. SEB COE and JOAQUEM CRUZ, for example, both ran only a fraction slower than WANYONYI in the early 1980s. WYCLIFE KINYAMAL was runner-up in (1:42.50) ahead of KOITATOI KIDALI in (1:42.66) as Olympic champion EMMANUEL KORIR faded in his heat and didn’t make the final.

A world silver medallist last year, WANYONYI, who is still only 19, will now go into the Olympics as 800m favourite although DJARNEL SEDJATI of Algeria has shown dazzling form in recent Diamond League meetings too.

CURRENT DISTRIBUTION OF SHAFTESBURY INFORMATION Currently I notify members (by email) using “MailChimp”. The reason I changed, was in November 2017 “Gmail” put a limit of 100 addresses that users could send to in a 24-hour period, and currently I send to approximately 850 members each issue.

On seeking technical advice “MailChimp” was recommended as the best way for SBH to go forward. There is one thing you should be aware off is that when you receive an email from me, the footer at the bottom has 4 options, of which one is “Unsubscribe Me From List”. Could I ask you not to select this as if you do you will be automatically removed from my distribution list.
