BRITISH EMPIRE MEDAL – Congratulation to BRYAN SMITH who has been awarded the British Empire Medal, in the recent honours list. This is how BRYAN received the notification of his honour – The King has been graciously pleased, on the occasion of the Celebration of His Majesty’s Birthday, to approve the award of the British Empire Medal (Civil Division) to the undermentioned:
The British Empire Medal is a British and Commonwealth award for meritorious civil or military service worthy of recognition by the Crown. The current honour was created in 1922 to replace the original medal, which had been established in 1917 as part of the Order of the British Empire.
GEOFF MORPHITIS went to the same school as BRYAN, William Ellis Grammar School, and he sent the following article to the editor of the Old Elysian Journal.
I don’t know if any of you know or have heard of BRYAN SMITH. He is a very good friend of mine. He was at WES from 1950 to 1956, he came from St Augustine’s Primary School in Maida Vale. He was a very good athlete at School and joined Shaftesbury Harriers.
DL SMITH was the PE teacher at the time when they played Football in the Autumn term and Rugby in the Spring term. He asked BRYAN to coach the U15 Rugby team when the school abandoned Football and played Rugby throughout the winter. It was during his time at WES that LOCKWOOD left as Headmaster and replaced by BAXTER. He qualified as a teacher in Barnet and was secretary of Middlesex County Schools Athletics Association for over 19 years. His wife, JOYCE SMITH, whom he coached, was a very well-known GB distance runner who represented GB&NI at the 1972 Munich Olympics, running the 1500m, where she was British record holder. He founded the Greater London Cross Country League for Women which was the first Women’s Cross Country League in the UK and, as a result, attracted team entries from throughout the UK.
BRYAN was appointed Race Director of the Avon International Marathon in 1980, by the Mayor of London, which was the first ever Women’s Marathon. This was the first time that roads were closed for a London road race. The success of this event led to the first London Marathon in 1981 and the introduction of the Women’s Marathon at the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles. JOYCE SMITH won the first two Tokyo Marathons in 1979 and 1980 and then the first two London Marathons in 1981 and 1982. Not surprisingly, BRYAN was appointed UK National Coach for Women’s Marathon. BRYAN lives in Watford.
BRYAN joined the then ‘Shaftesbury Harriers’ on the 10 May1954 (yes 70 years next May).At that time we held club matches at the Maccabi Stadium, Hendon which was knocked down to make way for the M1. We moved to our present home at Copthall Stadium which opened in 1964 for the English Schools and was later converted to an all-weather surface in 1976. In 1983 we built a Clubhouse, helped by a grant from the Sports Council and with much of the work done voluntarily by our own members. In 2013 following Saracens Rugby Club’s decision to relocate to Copthall, the Stadium has been rebuilt with a new stands, an indoor athletics training area and has been renamed “StoneX Stadium”.
BRYAN was one of the many to see the amalgamation of Barnet Copthall Ladies AC with Shaftesbury Harriers in the autumn of 1986.
In the 1984 New Year Honours list JOYCE SMITH was awarded the MBE for services to athletics. DAVE BEDFORD and GEORGE HARRISON were honoured in the 2014 Queen’s Birthday Honours List. DAVE was awarded the OBE for services to athletics and charitable fundraising, and GEORGE the MBE for services to athletics.

EUROPEAN TEAM CHAMPIONSHIPS: WHO, WHAT AND WHEN GUIDE – The following article was published on the Athletics Weekly website recently.
Poland will be the epicentre of athletics this week with FEMKE BOL, YAROSLAVA MAHUCHIKH and MILTOS TENTOGLOU among those in action. All eyes will be on the Slaski Stadium in Chorzów, Poland, this week with the venue playing host to the European Team Championships. Altogether there are 47 nations battling for honours in three divisions of the competition. For athletics enthusiasts it will provide a six-day feast of track and field. The event takes place in conjunction with the third edition of the European Games and divisions two and three of the athletics action will unfold on June 20-22 with the division one match on June 23-25.
Here are the teams:
First division: Poland, Great Britain, Germany, Netherlands, France, Italy, Finland, Belgium, Turkey, Czech Republic, Switzerland, Spain, Greece, Sweden, Norway, Portugal
Second division: Denmark, Ukraine, Romania, Estonia, Hungary, Slovenia, Lithuania, Bulgaria, Slovakia, Latvia, Croatia, Iceland, Serbia, Cyprus, Moldova, Luxembourg
Third division: Ireland, Bosnia & Herzegovina, Malta, Montenegro, Georgia, Armenia, Andorra, North Macedonia, San Marino, Albania, AASSE (Athletic Association of Small States of Europe), Azerbaijan, Kosovo, Austria, Israel
How to watch – For UK viewers the BBC is planning to show the action whereas you can also see it streamed live here, but look out for news, interviews and updates on the AW website and social media channels, especially the progress of the British team in the division one match. You can view the timetable and results here.
History – The event has a rich heritage and its forerunner – the European, or Europa, Cup – dates back to 1965 with Britain winning the men’s “Super League” title at Gateshead in 1989 and 2000, Munich in 1997, St Petersburg in 1998 and Annecy in 2002 and 2008. At the 1989 event in Gateshead, for example, many of Britain’s top stars at the time competed and the winners included LINFORD CHRISTIE, COLIN JACKSON, JOHN REGIS, TOM MCKEAN, STEVE BACKLEY, KRISS AKABUSI and DALTON GRANT, with the reward of qualification for the IAAF World Cup.
In 2009 the meeting was reinvented as the “European Team Championships” with male and female athletes now in the same squad and competing at the same venue. There were also controversial rules such as field eventers only being allowed a limited number of attempts and an elimination (or devil-takes-the-hindmost) element in distance races, but the ideas were criticised and subsequently dropped). Originally the new European Team Champs was in the form of four leagues, too, but there are now just three divisions. The most recent three editions of the event have been held in Poland – in Bydgoszcz in 2019 and Chorzów in 2021 and now 2023 – with the host nation taking advantage of home support by winning twice on the trot and now going for a hat-trick this week if they can triumph in the first division match.
Athletes in action – FEMKE BOL has been in brilliant form this summer already and represents the newly-promoted top division team, the Netherlands. MILTOS TENTOGLOU is another European champion in action and the Greek long jumper will be up against Italy’s MATTIA FURLANI and Switzerland’s SIMON EHAMMER this week. Hosts Poland have two of their individual European champions from Munich last year in action in the shape of sprint hurdler PIA SKRZYSZOWSKA and hammer thrower WOJCIECHI NOWICKI. Germany is traditionally strong in the throws and has won the overall title five times since 2009. Their squad includes, for example, javelin thrower JULIAN WBER. YEMAN CRIPPA will be looking for maximum points for Italy and is likely to go in the 5000m. There are some big names in the lower divisions too with high jumper YAROSLAVA MAKUCHIKH and long/triple jumper MARYNA BEKH-ROMANCHUK in the Ukraine team in division two. Triple jumper PEDRO PICHARDO, the Olympic, world and European gold medallist, is part of the Portuguese squad.
Since the event transformed from the European Cup to the European Team Championships, British Athletics has used the meeting as more of an opportunity to blood up and coming talent. The 2023 squad has 11 athletes making their GB & Northern Ireland international senior debut, for example. In comparison, defending champions Poland have named a full-strength team. However there are some experienced campaigners in the GB team such as throwers SCOTT LINCOLN, JADE LALLY and LAWRENCE OKOYE, plus sprinter RICHARD KILTY in the relay squad.

CURRENT DISTRIBUTION OF SHAFTESBURY INFORMATION – Currently I notify members (by email) using “MailChimp”. The reason I changed, was in November 2017 “Gmail” put a limit of 100 addresses that users could send to in a 24-hour period, and currently I send to approximately 850 members each issue.
On seeking technical advice “MailChimp” was recommended as the best way for SBH to go forward. There is one thing you should be aware off is that when you receive an email from me, the footer at the bottom has 4 options, of which one is “Unsubscribe Me From List”. Could I ask you not to select this as if you do you will be automatically removed from my distribution list.
